Hey Matt! You still haven't tried the Dollar Tree DE razor shave! You can get razor, balm, splash, soap puck, and moisturizer for under $10!! Thats my challenge to you! It's definitely not the best, but it is possible! They do have the shave brush, but it is horrible,😅
@@JimG7755 I confirm the three-piece razor from Dollar Tree is bad. I did not a full one-shave with the razor. Too aggressive; cap will not bend the blade; angle of the blade edge is wrong; just terrible.
Lol, kinda like I figured it would be! I’ve been wet shaving for about 2 years now. I found a pack cartridges in my cabinet and for the hell of it used some of my wife’s Barbasol and one of the cartridges. I had about the same reaction, I couldn’t finish my shave. I don’t know how I used those products for all those years!!
If you use the DSC cream with a brush it’s actually pretty solid. Of course it’s not going to compare with an artisan or high end product, but if you use a brush it’ll do a pretty good job. I’d personally avoid the Bevel razor because it has a terrible angle and I always get razor burn when I use it. I will admit I had similar issues when I first got my Rex Ambassador but there was no getting around it with the Bevel. That being said their blades are much better than the Van Der Hagen blades. I would recommend either the Van Der Hagen or King C. Gillette razor with the Bevel or Gillette blades a supermarket DE razor and blade combo. The only high quality brush I have found in stores is the Bevel one, but the Van Der Hagen one isn’t terrible if you can find it. For the cream you actually have a few options. Bevel is good, Nivea has a new one in a green bottle with a pump that’s very cheap but an incredible product, and Duke Cannon has a decent one if you can find it. But aftershave is definitely the easiest to come by- there are so many options for good ones.
I’m glad you swapped out the disposable razor for the DE one. Not only is a DE razor and blade superior to any other plastic cartridge razor it’s better for the environment. I use my slim adjustable most shaves that RE tuned up for me. It’s older than me and is just great 😊
Thanks for another great video! I love seeing your shave video because it seems to me we have similar hair/skin types so seeing what works for you often work for me too. Sorting my bathroom i found tons of gillet fusion cartriges and it got me thinking again: "it can't be this bad, i'll try again someday" but seeing this i'll stick to my konsul slant! What a dream that razor is, congrats and thanks for making them.
My conversion to Double Edge shaving was inspired by a Gillette Mach 3 cartridge blade coming loose mid-stroke and putting a huge gash in my chin, after decades of putting up with mediocre shaves and thinking a 5 o'clock shadow by 11am after a morning shave was normal. Also inspired me to grow a goatee while my chin healed. The pain of cartridges is real.
The Gillette Proglide is the best cartridge razor out there. The most comfortable in my book. I use De razor at home, but always have a Proglide razor and some refills whenever I travel on a plane and at some resorts. With a sensitive skin aloe shave gel, there is no pressure needed to be applied on the razor. Just lather and glide. With the Mach 3 and schick razors you have to press down hence more irritation and in growns.
I actually used things like the Mach 3, Fusion, etc.... before finding the channels like yours Matt, as well as Geofatboy, SinatraLennon and Kensurfs and seeing how awesome DE shaving is. It has made me actually make shaving more of a hobby now that I have a little collection of DE razors including a revamped K3 Slim Adjustable from Razor Emporium. Never returned to cartridges since.
Thank you for reconfirming why I can not shave with multiple blade cartridges. I left them behind over a decade ago as the tugging was unbearable. Smooth Shaving everybody!
I switched because I thought it was cool to try and shave with a double edge razor. In doing this I also got an amazing shave and the savings are phenomenal. Once I stop buying different razors and soaps it will be more noticeable lol
You're fighting the good fight for content. Love it! Just got my first DE order today. Even after a few nicks, I don't think I'll ever go back to cartridge shaving again. Had the same style of "prep" school myself. Once or twice I was given one of those single blade Bic's.
I cried inside remembering all those horrible cartridge razor shaves. You sir, are a hero.I see that you have some REX Fireside shaving products. Picked up a couple bars of the fireside preshave and some beard care items with the same scent. Love me some Fireside. I also put your chopper on my wishlist. Maybe if it goes on sale I'll pick it up one day.
Wow! Just yesterday, Thursday, at my local store, just happened to walk by the shaving isle. Was going to pick up $ shaving cream based on a review that praised it. Decided to pass. But got the “Post shave cream” instead. Don’t feel so bad now for passing it up. Thanks for taking one for the team, Matt!
As much as I hate to admit it (I have my collection of DEs, single blades and straight razors), the gillette skinguard and bic 2 blade are probably the only good ones available in the supermarket that are half decent. They didn't leave me with a rash or ingrowns or worse, and my skin is way more sensitive than Matt's. These come from experiences of traveling to a different city and realising I've left my stuff at home :(
Dollar Shave Crap! Yep, I was questioning my recent purchase of Ariana and Evans, and Antica Barbieria Colla. My wallet was kicking a bit, but after you reminded me of the crap I used to use on my face.... WORTH IT!
I didn't know what shaving was supposed to feel like. I just assumed shaving just does that. I decided to try DE shaving to be fancy and a hipster. I then figured out there a reason people do this. I actually look forward to shaving now. I can smell like sandlewood when I shave! Lol. I had a Merkur 23c and recently got a Progress. That's a lot of razor and I'm still working out the best settings for different places on my face. I have learned Astra Greens are the best blade for me, however. I have a tough beard and sensitive skin. I'm going to try the classic slant razor at some point, but don't feel like spending the money right now.
I felt your pain as you were soldiering through those initial strokes with that cartridge Mountain Dew razor 😆. If I absolutely had to use any cartridge razor, I’d go with the classic disposable two blade Gillettes that come in a dozen per pack or it’s store brand equivalent. Thank you for the awesome videos and willingness to sacrifice your face for us all. Cheers!
Matt this series is awesome! alot of people ask me about my wet shaving at work and it's hard to explain beginner steps because I'm to the point of just straight razoring My head and beard. always recommend your channel and website for unbiased unformation keep it up!
Vikings Blade Chieftain Jr is very cheap and it's a great beginner razor. It's mild , easy to hold and won't slip while shaving. It's the one I am using my Gillette Platinum blades in . It makes me love shaving.
My de blades, I've been using the same de blade for a couple years... No joke! No tugging or pulling, Straight up smooth shaves... Saving much money too!!
I'm so glad you didn't shave your neck with that stuff. I was cringing from the very beginning. Your nads Sir, they are huge. You've reminded me why I stopped using cartridge razors 20 yrs ago. I got sick of my Mach 3 and tossed it in the trash. Never looked back. Why was I using one? Colleges used to put them in the yearly "welcome packages" given to students starting a new school year when they moved back into the dorms. It was what I knew. Never again! Have a good time at the wedding.
I enjoy trying some random things at the box stores but time after time it proves to be bad. If your up to a pleasantly surprising challenge, try the dollar tree puck soap.
7:12 That stroke looked ROUGH!! Good note not to use that razor! Also, I have seen that DSC shaving cream at the store and was tempted to buy it, but after watching this, now I know not to. The WORST shaving cream that I have used is no doubt Barbosol. Yes it was thick, but it dried up so fast on my face and provided absolutely ZERO slickness. I'm not kidding, I had razor burn so bad on my neck that it drew blood. It was awful. You're better off shaving with water at that point. Love your videos, Matt. They are very insightful and entertaining. Keep up the great work!
The handle is from a 1920s Durham DuBarry razor. I first got one mated to an OLD type head, but since have purchased a complete version of the DuBarry in a case. It used Durham Duplex blades. The handle is nickel plated solid brass and is a great match for any three piece Gillette head.
I think that you are a baby, you’re acting, and you’re making this up because a are schilling…yeah, we all see where this is going lolz. I’d have given up well before you Matt. This series of videos has made me thankful for a tub of Stirling soap, cheap boar brush, Dollar Tree Tech razor, Wilkinson Sword Gillette blades, and Nivea balm, all of which I could use every day and have zero issues out of. Cheers
Wade & Butcher or Durham Razor Handle. You are nutz doing these shaves Mat but I see and understand why you're doing it. It will get an audience of cart users to view and learn about smething better. Have a great day and enjoy a safe trip and the wedding 👍
Nice Frankenrazor Matt! You should have a giveaway for that beast! For many years I used the old multi blade cartridge and when i switched over to DE initially i used to get cuts etc.. Primarily because i was using the old cartridge push and scrape technique I think. Its hardly surprising that the majority of people who hate shaving are the ones using cartridges. It does take a while for your face to get used to DE shaving and to get your technique down(but not very long). Yeah there are lots of brilliant inexpensive products, Arko soap ,about a dollar or 2 apiece depending on how many you buy and they last forever(not for vegetarians though). Any brush. King C Gillette razor and 5 blades or the Wilkinson Sword classic also with 5 blades (a little over 20 each, i have both, the King C blades are far superior imo but both are nice mild razors). Any nivea product or a dab of moisturiser from the missus's stash after and you are done!
Unfortunately with my job as a pilot i have to resort back to my cartridge razor while on trips but I do like the Dollar Shave Club Shave Butter. Should do a video trying that out and see what you think. There's no lather in it but i find it does provide a good slick and lubricated surface to shave from.
As a black man, my skin is jumping off my face just from looking at those three extra sharp blades! My Mach 3 have me some of the worst razor bumps in high school.
Hahahahaha, took a big one on the chin for us Matt💪 Sorry, I felt the disgust, but it was comical watching your face those first few strokes. Nope, haven't shaved with anything other than DE, SE or injector style razors and quality software in over 30+yrs, mostly vintage hardware until the "wet shaving" scene exploded, what a glorious time that was. Software was a bit harder to source but was available in local stores that no longer exist, shame. Thanks for your commitment to the community and these videos. Take it slow.
After switching (not too long ago) to a DE Safety Razor ALL of my face/skin issues have gone away - I've also never had a closer or smoother shave with the possible exception of after my beard became used to shaving with an electric decades ago. I've been cartridge shaving in the shower with shave "gel" for the past 25 years or so along with an electric razor occasionally when I travel but will say for certain now that I'm never going back to cartridges or electric (sans a bump behind my ear where I know I will cut my self with anything except for an electric foil razor). I think that just about anyone who saves their face would likely have a great experience and experience great results if they try and stick with it for more than a week or two. Wet shaving with a DE Safety Razor is one of the best kept (non) secrets out there - the only real downside is that it takes a bit more time and you'd likely spend a chunk of money if you're into it as a hobby.
I'm all for DE razors over cartridges'. That being said, every once in a while I'll try a new to me DE blade and it gives a horrible shave. But I love the whole process of shaving with a shave soap, brush and DE razor and end with a splash of witch hazel.
You're not schilling or being a baby. Since the age of 12 when I got into DE Razor shaving back in 1996, I decided to try a Cartridge Razor at age 32. Yeah.....not pretty. It was some 4 bladed Gillette thing that led to massive irritation, 5 ingrown hairs on my neck, 2 cuts on the chin, as well as 3 ingrown hairs on the face. That was after only 1 shave. Tugging of the blade was just painful. I don't blame you for ranting and chucking ALL the razors, I've obviously been there lol.
My two sons are in the Mountain Dew demographic. I can’t even convince them to shave everyday. Rather, they sport the “Mountain Man” look so common with the 20 year old set. What can I do? Meanwhile, my Friday shipment from RE just arrived: small batch Barbershop aftershave and shaving cream. While I do have to pay for shipping, I’d rather give RE my business than the evil Big A. BTW: I remember when Fry’s was the go-to electronics store in Silicon Valley.
From time I started shaving always used cartridges razors and would get disgusted about the price of blades then about 8 years ago I purchased the DE razor at the store and from then on have used DE. Then one day I discovered RE and purchased two Gillette TTO razors and Gillette Blue blades and never went back to cartridges.
From age like 14 or so till age 28 I prob only shaved like 3 times cuz cartridge razors would just eat my face lol. So i would just use a beard trimmer and rock stubble lol. Then about 7 years ago i found DE safety razors and man, first time i was able to shave with little to no irritation and that was with ZERO experience or knowing what i was doing, not to mention my skin was not use to being shaved....yet still i was able to get a decent shave. Now, i could never look back!
It's a shame that Schick has resorted to these novelty style razors as their regular triple blade razors are pretty solid and were a favorite of mine before I switched to safety razor a few years ago. I used a Yintal long-handle razor with an Asco DE blade by Lord yesterday for a close (no drama) shave.
Everyman jack makes some good products. I keep emailing them about making a shave soap for some of their line like the sandlwood and sea salt. Maybe you can convince them Matt!
What about the Gillette Atra Plus VS a modern cartridge razor? There's a few different brands that make cartridges for the Atra and you can still get new Atra handles for like $9 on ebay and 20 blades for like $15. They work pretty well with a good quality shaving soap or cream. Not as good as a DE of course but considering the prices modern cartridge razors sell for the Atra is a bargain. Plus Taconic makes nice handles for the Atra blade.
Man RUclips promoting all the old wetshavers I used to watch makes me want to sack the beard. If I end up doing it I'll probably end up buying your new adjustable slant. Wetshaving is really nice but I spend too much money on it 😝 I agree though, I shaved for a family event and used one of those cartridges and it was flat out garbage. No idea why people buy that stuff.
Hey Matt would you ever think about doing a video with a single blade disposable BIC against any of the other off the shelf multi blades. Before I switched over to DE shaving my last razors were BIC disposables.
the cream is ok, the DSC butter is much much better, but I don't find the scent to be great. It's not nearly like the Cremo Sandal or the Poraso Red honestly. But the butter is super slick.
Would you consider doing a beginner wetshave under 10$ using a Lord L6 razor, bar soap as a preshave, Gillete shaving foam and some body lotion as an aftershave?
I got a decent shave with the Dollar Shave Club cream when adding enough water and using a brush. Also, you're using the cartridge incorrectly. The correct way to use is 90 degree angle, and pressure. You were trying to use that cart like a DE and thats gonna be a bad time every time guaranteed.
I'm not surprised you had such a bad time of it with that Schick - any razor that's disposable in its entirety is likely to be just Bic-level face-shredding. I think Gillette and Schick and Bic, for the throwaways, just do not care for any kind of consistent QC, but do step up for their systems, as those have buyer lock-in - you don't want to piss off a system user into changing brands because once he leaves, he's not likely to come back. But I will say, when I was still using cartridges, the original Gillette Mach 3 was my regular, and I usually didn't have issues with it chaffing or pulling, except for the occasional bad cartridge head that was just awful and rough right out of the pack. When they started pushing beyond 3 blades though? Just awful. They made a good argument in the original Sensor that 2 blades *could* give a better shave over a single in a cartridge, and the 3 of the Mach even worked due to the spacing. But beyond that you're excessively distributing the downforce such that you're compromising the cutting force unless you keep thinning the metal, and the thinner metal deforms rapidly, going from sharp to shred, while clogging and again distributing the load - it's senseless.
Hey there! Congratulations you are the comment winner! To receive your free tshirt please email us at Help@razoremporium.com with your tshirt size! Thank you for your support!
The Gillette Proglide is not bad. The problem I had first using the Proglide is that I was pressing too much like Mach 3. Bad idea. The blades are more , sharper and thinner. All that is required is light or no pressure gliding on a sensitive skin shave gel lather which is lubricated. I even do 2 passes. Occasionally if I am rushing out , I use it or when I travel. The Gillette Proglide is a big improvement over the orange colored Fusion 5 blades. Thinner, sharper blades.
I´m a all around shaving guy i can use almost any type of razor apart from Shavet and that straight razor...i agree this disposable razor sucks in Europe its the Wilkinson sword version
I’ve been shaving with a safety razor for like almost 5 years or so and these cartridge razors just makes me cringe so bad. Brings me back to 2009 when I shipped out to basic training and we had to shave EVERY. SINGLE. MORNING. with a 5-blade Gillette Fusion razor and Barbasol. No pre-shave, no after-shave, and drill sargents would always scream at me because I would only shave with the grain. They’d say, “HEY! WHY IS YOUR NECK SO DARK! DID YOU SHAVE THIS MORNING?!” -“Yes drill sargent!” -“I DONT BELIEVE YOU! GET BACK IN THE BARRACKS AND SHAVE AGAIN!”
But wait, you have 2 more razors in the bag. Now how much would you pay? Act now and get a tube of extra cushion cream to use with your comfort strips😂.
In Germany you can get a Chrome-plated King c Gillette DE Razor with blades + a tube of shaving cream for 20 bucks, is there no market for such things in the US?
@@RazorEmporium very nice, I regained my belief in mankind when I saw that there are people left who don’t want to produce 20 grams of plastic waste per shave.
Just got back from a weeks vacation. Used in-cabin luggage, so no DE blades, had to use a travel-size cartridge razor that I haven’t used in years. Hated every minute of shaving with it! Even with a good quality shaving cream and a good travel brush, it was awful. Lots of tugging, have to buff too much for a “close” shave. Left me with irritation and very dry skin.
Most of the stuff you can by at many retailers is nothing but junk, that don’t work well. Think a person would be wise to buy a good quality, old school razor, blades, and have more bang for buck. Think Razor Emporium.
I decided to shave my head several years ago; tried an electric with foam.....it did NOT shave well and it more than burnt....I had to apply sun burn aloe lidocaine cream. The next day had to shave using a cart.....that was also torture, a bit less than electric. Thank GOD no ingrown hairs. That is how I went online and eventually ordered a Merkur adjustable razor.....that was the beginning of a new trip down the rabbit hole. Still have that razor, still enjoy. BTW I tried the famous cart HeadShave.....I had to abort like Matt did, it hurt like hell and then I was unwilling to deal with ingrown hairs in the back o f the neck.....just thinK : who is going to fish those hairs out...... I can use a one blade Gillette semi disposable from India.....that is the only besides DE that works.
Here is just a guess that your preparation method with the DSC cream was not adequate. Still, that razor resembles another without the left-right pivot head, which I use on rare occasions and feels scrapy to use.
I love the pre shave along with the fireside shave soap and the aftershave balm . I use the merkur progress or the Rockwell 6C on my face and a leaf razor on my head. I will never go back to my Gillette Fusion . 🪒💈👍🏻
No surprise that you hated the Dollar Shave Crap. I used to be a sucker and subscribed to their "service". It's overpriced garbage. I switched to DE shaving about 3 years ago and have never looked back. My skin is clearer as well.
Good luck at CVS or Walmart, Mat. I just bought a hundred pack of Gillette Platinum de blades for $12 on Amazon. That 3 pack Schick is $6. These disposable razor business is one of the biggest rip offs in the world.
The marketing is such bullshit. Safety razors dont have the "comfort strips" simply because they don't need them. If done right a safety razor just works. No bolt-ons needed.
That was painful to watch Matt, I decided to switch because cartridge razors turned my face into chop meat, plus they were bleeding my wallet. Everyman Jack makes great products, they also make a cartridge razor and blades. I’m loving my fatboy and slim and will never use these cartridge razors again:)
A man has got to know his limitations Matt. 😂 I'd have done the same thing....crappy cartridge razor becomes high speed projectiles aimed at the trash can. Long live DE razors.
DE shave is so much better than cartridge shave. You have to be careful with any shaving implement, but cartridge razors really irritate my face and neck.
Basically every cartridge razor design after the Sensor (and that wasn't super awesome, either) has been less than decent... Only recently got into DE shaving and wish someone cared enough to have pointed me in the right direction long ago.
I will agree w your eval of that cart: Schick and WilkinsonSword are both $h!T for me: hurts, irritates, ingrown hairs....and it's more expensive......
Started off barbaric. Schick is shi……. Worst razor I’ve used years back before DE. Mach 3 better option as far as carts/disposible. Every man jack is good but not great but prob the best grocery store option I’ve tried. Good vid Matt.
Dollar shave club shave cream to me is the worst shaving cream I have ever use I rather use bulldog shave cream which to me is very good shave gel that I enjoy using to using every man jack sensitive shave cream and even Cremo and even pacific shave cream that lathers better with a brush that creates a great lather I rather use any of these shave cream products I have mentioned that you can get at the store then the dollar shave club product because I bought a set of there razor that came with the shave cream but it’s horrible event van der Hagen shave butter works so much better to shave at least to me. I prefer those products then dollar shave club products.

You are a brave man!
The handle is from a 1920s Durham DuBarry razor. I first got one mated to an OLD type head, but since have purchased a complete version of the DuBarry in a case. It used Durham Duplex blades. The handle is nickel plated solid brass and is a great match for any three piece Gillette head.
The demonstration and discussion makes me wonder, how would I find Dollar Shave Club Shaving-Cream to be? Very tempting! Their post-shave dew is good.
“Dollar Shave Crap” haha! Exactly! 😆
My high school would do the same thing😂😂 had to be clean shaved!
Great video Matt!!
Thanks!
We need some of the UK wet shavers to try this challenge out in blighty
You were shaving at 12? Are you a gorilla?
I use a cartridge razor on holiday for convenience, and I miss the perfection of my DE razor.
I thought public torture wasn’t a thing anymore and yet here is this video.
Hey way to go Matt De Is the best
From age like 14 or so till age 28 I prob only shaved like 3 times cuz cartridge razors would just eat my face lol. So i would just use a beard trimmer and rock stubble lol. Then about 7 years ago i found DE safety razors and man, first time i was able to shave with little to no irritation and that was with ZERO experience or knowing what i was doing, not to mention my skin was not use to being shaved....yet still i was able to get a decent shave. Now, i could never look back!
Eek. Tough sledding. I too check out whats in the local big grocery store and pharmacies- maybe i’ll report on a budget shave from France!
Any DE safety razor is better than a cartridge razor. Love my Rockwell 6S! Although many prefer Feather blades, I prefer my Astra Green blades.
I tried a Harry’s once. I had ingrown city. Was terrible. Tossed it after 1 shave.
Just remember DE wetshavers represent less than 10% of the shaving industry. I love DSC 6 blade razor.
I think the ladies were fortunate when in came to gem class lol!
The struggle is real !!! :)))
Target has a complete wet shaving kit for about $22
Man RUclips promoting all the old wetshavers I used to watch makes me want to sack the beard.
If I end up doing it I'll probably end up buying your new adjustable slant. Wetshaving is really nice but I spend too much money on it 😝
I agree though, I shaved for a family event and used one of those cartridges and it was flat out garbage.
No idea why people buy that stuff.
Hey Matt would you ever think about doing a video with a single blade disposable BIC against any of the other off the shelf multi blades. Before I switched over to DE shaving my last razors were BIC disposables.
Good idea
22 dolares y tienes un kit de afeitado muy bueno y económico...
the cream is ok, the DSC butter is much much better, but I don't find the scent to be great.
Ouch, probably should have paramedics standing by if you do a $10 limit . . . ;)
I don't know what it was, but something gave me the impression you weren't a fan of the grocery store option! 😂
You did the right thing in not finishing with the cartridge razor. If it's not the right thing for you, don't use it and sacrifice your face.
Holy crap, there's still a "Fry's" ? Are the grocery stores related to the Electronics store that died a horrible death?
It's Kroger
It was actually painful to watch you put yourself through that, Matt.
The shaving guy, doing the bad shaving thing😉
In Germany you can get a Chrome-plated King c Gillette DE Razor with blades + a tube of shaving cream for 20 bucks, is there no market for such things in the US?
We have the same thing at CVS and Walmart.
As the ol saying "You get what you pay for, Lol!"
Matt don’t do this again. We love you to much. 😂
Would you say Barbasol in the can is better than DSC? Glad i never tried that stuff.
Yes
@@RazorEmporium 👍🏼
Here is just a guess that your preparation method with the DSC cream was not adequate. Still, that razor resembles another without the left-right pivot head, which I use on rare occasions and feels scrapy to use.
It could only be better if I showered first. But I've become accustomed to the shaves for video thing and....it was still unpleasant.
Just do like MAC in predator one and break it on your face.😂
Lol 🤣
I will agree w your eval of that cart: Schick and WilkinsonSword are both $h!T for me: hurts, irritates, ingrown hairs....and it's more expensive......
Started off barbaric. Schick is shi……. Worst razor I’ve used years back before DE. Mach 3 better option as far as carts/disposible. Every man jack is good but not great but prob the best grocery store option I’ve tried. Good vid Matt.
People kill me. "For only $20" ive wasted money on all of it and i like spending $5
Painful to watch. If you are in Bangkok and the airline lost your luggage, go to a professional barber. Only 120 baht. ($3.43)
That Schick razor is the perfect example of over engineering. Lots of little features and gizmos that don't add anything to the final user experience.
Patents.
