- Here is a video for those of you thinking of making the switch from cartridge razors to traditional wet-shaving. Shaving like you father and grandfather did. It's a fun hobby, and costs are much much less for blades compared to cartridge refills. I will cover briefly; brushes, blades, razors, preshave, soaps and some techniques. Not in depth but enough to give you an idea of what you need to get started. Below I will include the links to some shave websites.
Thank you for watching. Subscriptions appreciated.

One thing I love about this style of shaving, or craft, is that it's just a part of your day where all the BS of life goes somewhere else. It's your own world. It's relaxing, and it's fun. And I will say, the smell that some of these soaps and creams have are out of this world amazing. Its fun to have a stand and a brush and a bowl waiting for you. It's a great experience.
👍👍
Just a little tip but don’t wet your face before putting on your pre shave oil as it won’t adhere to skin evenly but apart from that great video my friend….. learned a lot I must say😊
I love your your unbiased approach to all different kind of product. Good show.
parmar gurdeep Thank you👍👍
It made me want to subscribe again. That was really awesome.
You are definitely an expert, Ken!!! Professor Surfs!
Thank you🙏🙏
This video is like my grandpa sitting me down and giving me the wet shaving talk. Thanks for this video
Me: "I am not going to watch a 30 minute video on shaving."
*watches 30 minute video on shaving*
Lol
You too, eh? Never knew shavijg would be so intriguing lol. Been shaving with cartridges for almost 30 years now, never tried a double edge safety razor but definitely on the fence about trying this out
@@crimsontide1980 once you make the switch to a double edge safety razor, you'll never go back to the cartridge razor. I've been shaving with safety razors for about six years now and I love it. I've got a straight razor too, but more just to have one. Safety razors are the way to go. Superior shave, no razor bump, lower long-run cost, and the craftsmanship of a quality safety razor are all reasons to shave with DE safety razors. It takes about 3-5 shaves to get the technique down, but once you do it becomes second nature.
Twice! 😅
A custom-made handle on a shaving brush - this man takes shaving seriously. From now on, I will believe what he says and do what he tells me.
Thank you👍👍
This was a nice way to spend 30 minutes. Far more enjoyable than what is on television these days plus, I learned something. Ken's videos never get old. It is always a pleasure to try different things regarding shaving. Shaving is our "Me Time". Not much beats a fresh shower and shave using quality products.
👍👍💈
Wasn't expecting to watch the full video, I was going to skip through. However, I watched the whole thing and I enjoyed it. Very informative and. Felt like I was talking with my father or grandfather teaching me about this, and I loved it. Thank you!
Awesome, thank you!👍💈💈
Ken, had a 4 hour train ride yesterday and watched a bunch of your videos. Today went to the drug store and got myself one of those Wilkinson Classic razors. Here in Germany they go for 3.50€ minus a 20% sale that was going on. Just finished my first shave. What can I say? Awesome result and no cuts. My wife saw your den and now she's scared :-)
Thanks for your channel - I love it! Greetings from Hamburg, Germany!
thingsis Greetings to my new friend in Germany. Thank you for watching. I wish we had access to the Classic Razors like you do. I had to buy mine off eBay U.K. 👍👍💈💈
Well, to be honest it is mostly that Wilkinson Classic that they carry in the drug stores. The rest is a bit more complicated. But at 3.50 including 5 blades it would be pretty stupid not to try it. If it works over the next couple days I will use it as a travel razor and get one of those Mühle R89 I think. Think that makes sense as a beginner? Henrik
thingsis 👍👍💈💈
I thought this was the start to a math question
@@FoolCatGaming HAH! A good one ;)
Got cut by feather. Yes it's super sharp but the best glide I had was with Super 7 from Gillette
Just found this video - as a neophyte I bought a Merkur slant and Feather blades on a recommendation from a coworker. All of which you don’t recommend for a beginner which is good. Needless to say, I wound up with more than a few nicks and cuts the first few times - glad I hung in there - a couple of months later and anything less aggressive leaves me impatient.
Man oh man though the soaps, aftershaves and brushes oh my! I am glad I found this hobby and your channel. Wet shaving is really a salve that soothes the soul. The variety of scents alone have activated a childlike joy in me!
Take care,

Ken ... I was surfing looking for the original Old Spice that my deceased husband wore as I miss that smell on him ... but soon found out that once buying .. it doesn't smell like what he used . I'm 70 years old and I guess they have changed things since when he wore it . I just want to say however that that is how I ran across your RUclips shows and found you very entertaining and knowledgeable on the subject of all and found myself watching several of your shows . After ordering Old Spice original on ebay , I found that this particular bottle didn't smell at all and now will not do that again ... hahah ... but I want to say that I enjoy the history and knowledge you share and wish continued success ! BTW ...has anyone ever told you that you look and sound like Alan Harper on Two and a Half Men ? To me ... you sure do ... haha . Love your videos ... glad you admitted to having your lovely wife and daughter help you with the smells of the different after shaves ... hahaha ! I to remember not only my deceased husband using Old Spice but also my daddy ... again .. keep up the videos !
Donna Lucas Thanks Donna, I have heard that I sound like Alan..lol also Bob Ross and Mister Rogers 😀😀
Hi, yes it has changed, my grandfather used it daily, i do like the new smell but i can remember the original, it was very spicy and sweet. You can find them on ebay under vintage old spice.
I know I'm late watching this but I could listen to this guy talk about anything...
I bought and use the VDH safety razor with Astra platinum blades, cremo and Nivea sensitive after shave
Great tips! Especially now this video is so important, cartridge razors are so expensive now a days. Wish more people wet shaved. Cheers and thanks for the video
Thanks for watching!👍💈💈

William Corella what’s the request?
@@kensurfs I want to get into wet shaving since I would watch shaving videos. I want my first razor to be the supply razor and my first cream to be the Taylor of old bond street. I have no information the brush. What are your thoughts and recommendations? May you please make a video about this if you can about you shaving and giving your thoughts and opinion.
By far, the most informative and useful video I've ever seen. And that bathroom...get out. It looks like the last bastion of maleness left in America. I'm heading out for some Brut and a DE now. Thanks, Ken!
Thank you
I'm 54 and I've never wet shaved. Used electric and cartridge always razor burn. 3 x Gillette Mach3 cost about $9- never getting the shave (BBS or even close to it) I believe I should be able to get. So lately I've re-evaluated this situation.
Some time back (maybe 20 years ago) I was given a razor but I was afraid to try it for fear of cutting myself, having that double edged blade in it. It's been sitting in a trunk. With this new found interest I dug it out and it's a Gilette Fatboy H2 (Mfr. 1962 if I understand it correctly). I see all your links and when I have some products in hand I'm going to take this plunge.
I got a variety pack of blades. I was thinking the feather might be soft- but after your warning, I think I will try the Gilette Super Blue first.
Thank you so much for this video with the explanations about brushes, pre-shave and explaining the angle aspect.
You are sharing things with us that (honestly) our fathers should have instructed us on.

Nice video, Ken. I actually like your longer videos, personally. I know you average under 10 mins. but I think you should take your time... That's part of what makes it relaxing... If it's too long for people they can always fast forward. But anyway, I hope this video encourages the folks who are "on the fence" to commit to wet shaving. I'm certainly glad I did! It's been probably 4 years now... A really enjoyable experience and "addicting" like you say... But that's okay, it's a positive addiction...haha... Actually it's really just a hobby. Some (most) people don't understand how wet shaving could be a hobby... But there's a lot worse things to spend your money and time on. Thanks Ken!
Justin Bailey Absolutely, Thanks Justin👍👍💈💈

Feather blade holders have a slot on the bottom for spent blades. A little trick I learned after a while of trying to figure out how to dispose of used blades.

Love the tutorial! I was always told not to use alcohol based aftershave because it dries out the skin. I currently use an aftershave balm which works nice.

I got my dad a twist open a few years back and he thought I was trying to kill him. I guess he's never seen or been taught on how to use a safety razor. I've been using a 3 piece razor for several years and taught myself using videos on RUclips. Love your videos Ken!
I started exploring more traditional wet shaving when an embarrassing error prompted me to up my game. I bought the King C Gillette DE Safety Razor as a starter (still need the rest of the kit and goodies), but already, I can say that using a safety razor is not only a lot nicer feeling on the skin, but how much more concentration you need throughout is a therapeutic, head-clearing pleasure. I merely just went to clean up my stubble and ended up feeling so relaxed and ready for bed. Lovely!

I came here for tips on a how to use the brush and got sucked into the 30 minute video. I'm in my 40's and never even considered lathering back up for a second pass. That's an awesome tip, thanks for doing the video!

I'm not trying to make anyone feel bad for me. But honestly Ken, I never grew up having a dad. So you showed me a lot about shaving. Thanks Ken 👊🏼
@Kensurfs I remember growing up watching my dad with his brush, puck and razor too. The fact is that I have so used to the cartridges, and I was a bit intimidated at first. But after watching your tutorial, I felt more confident and tried fir the first time myself..... 110% Satisfied! Thanks again!
Update:
I ended up getting a Weishi Adj. Butterfly Double Edge Safety Razor and a Badger hair brush - Fantastic!
Thank you👍👍👍
Fantastic video!
Thank you👍👍
Ken, good video. Just felt like adding that basically what is different about safety razors is that the head is fixed. On cartridge razors the head pivots. This means that with safety razors you do need to pay more attention to the angle and generally you need to learn not to put pressure on the razor. You could use shaving brushes and soaps with any type of razor. You don't have to use a brush in order to use a safety razor, but it is worth mentioning that a lot of the canned shave gels or foams do contain more chemicals compared to some shaving soaps and creams, and as you mentioned the brush will help getting the soap worked better into the whiskers.
MrUlski Absolutely right, thank you 👍👍
Can you use hand soap instead of shaving soap??
@@sirgalah561 trust me, just get a good shaving soap puck for like fifteen bucks.
Excellent video.
Thank you
Hi Ken, I just wanted to take the time to thank you!
Firstly your the only youtube video with 30 min that I watched from start to finish with no forwarding.
Secondly I have tried cartridges, electric razor, and hated shaving! And hated Irritation after.
I took your advice and bought the equipment as you suggested except the preshave..next purchase!
DE shaved for the first time and best shave ever..the blade glides across! Other than going to the barber best shave ever!
And no major leakers!
Sorry for the long post and keep posting!
I still provide this link to new or aspiring wet shavers. Still great info. Thanks Ken!
Thanks Ken for the video. I'm just starting to research and think about putting down the electric. Your video was a good start and will be watching more of yours.

Excellent content and production. Well done Sir.
I just did my second shave ever using the van der hagen razor with the personna blades. It went well. Thank you ken surfs for recommending the personna blades. U are right, they are very mild. I got cut in two spots on my neck. Not too bad for a virgin shaver. I am enjoying using the brush with the shave soap. Looking forward to buying different ones. I really like watching your videos ken.
Scott Colwell Thanks Scott, I cut the right side of my neck all the time👍💈
Did you buy the VDH shaving kit?
Dear Sir I would like to thank you from my heart for reminding me , something precious to me that I had forgotten.
My dad had a Gillette Slim 1965 model ( I found recently what model it was ) and I wanted to shave my self as a child and he also used to remove the blade from the razor and put some foam in my cheek and let me rub my cheek with it . Thank you again for bringing back a lost , but now found memory . Athens Greece .
Thank you
I haven't shaved since the beginning of the stay at home order for Covid-19. It was truly starting to drive me nuts. I decided to treat myself after seeing this video. I went out and bought the Van der Hagen kit, pre-shave oil and DE razor at a local department store. They had the whole line of products. Oh, it feels so good! Closest shave I ever had. Thanks for all the advice.
Thank you and stay safe👍💈
I'm going to switch to safety razors, brush and soap. The waste created by shaving cream cans and cartridges is insane!
I can shave like a lumberjack, save money and help save our planet.
Good decision 😁👍
I started with a cheap set on amazon that cost like 30$. Comes with the brush, small bowl, safety razor and 5 extra blades. Its a handy little setup and i have no complaints. I have recently bought some preshave and aftershave from the blades grim. Ive tried them in the past and really liked them. Their shave soap is awesome compared to my other less expensive daily shave soap from van der hagen. I eventually bought a box of wilkinson blades. 100 blades is a lottle much lol, i can get so many shaves out of a single blade. I havent counted but after some time ive changed the blade because its gotta be dulling right? Nope, the shave didnt feel any different. I dont have a shave bowl yet, i just use a glass cerial bowl right now. I also wanna get a better quality razor eventually but the cheapy is still going strong after a couple years of steady use.
If you do upgrade, the merkur progress is a great all around razor
Paul H's approach is more philosophical and your approach is more practical. The Tutorials compliment each other. Have no fear there was no copying; intentional or otherwise. A newbie to wet shaving would be well served to watch both.
Very well done!

The blades are very sheap.
I’m 23 and I have been using a safety razor since I got one as a gift when I was in high school. I’m switching to a straight razor now because I hate buying razor blades and I don’t want to support big business anymore. In any small way I can, I want to cut back from the big companies and switching to a reusable straight razor is one way I intend to. I’m even having a razor custom made by an American knife maker to cut out big companies
does it work for you ?
