Great video Rod. My method I just soak my tips and go straight to my soap and start whipping and then to the face. If it's too thick I simply add a touch of water and go to the face till I get it nice and slick.

I load the brush for 20-25 seconds only and then bowlather adding about 15 drops of water in total 3x5-6 drops. In the doggy bowl you used in this video. This way I have lather for 3 passes plus extra two for the next day. Keep in mind that I start with wet but completely squeezed brush. This is my technique. It works for me in very hard water, because everyone can with soft or distilled. Your soaps are 18.50 euro in Europe. Thanks Rod! Very helpful! In time of careful choices, it is good to toot your horn every once in a while! Thanks for all you & Mandy do! Appreciate you and all the Stirling products! Best
Nothing wrong with tooting your own horn when it's based on merit. Look at all those tooting it who have nothing, or worse, something harmful to offer.
I just ordered a few stirling soaps and one of your synthetic brushes. Is it really ok to just stick the brush in the soap jar like that or can I take some out and put it in the lathering bowl? I fear it could become contaminated with bacteria by dipping the brush directly in the soap.
Plenty of customers do scoop out some soap and lather in a separate bowl. It's not necessary though, as unless you have a filthy brush and shaving area, the soap will kill any bacteria. I've got soaps in my collection that I load directly from the jar with that are over 10 years old, and none of them have ever become contaminated.
It is good to see you on RUclips Rod. I am always intrigued to what Stirling is up too. Can't wait till Glacial Margaritas in the Artic is released. Thank you.
I've tried both. I prefer bowl lathering. I'm sure I use more soap that way. I do however like that I don't have to allow the soap to dry. Seems to hold scent better that way for me.
Thanks, Shawn. There seems to be a growing contingent that scoops a small amount of soap out of the original container and then moves it to the bowl for bowl lathering.
Great products to shave with, pretty clean ingredients but lather.... wow.... still can't believe how much lather is made from such a fair amount of soap. You Sir are a wizzard 😊 Thank you so much!
Great video. Been buying your soaps for years and always satisfied. Question: Do you put the lid right back on the shave soap container once you are done shaving? Or do you let some excess moisture dry out before putting the lid back on it? Just looking for what's best longevity wise. Thanks!
Thank you! If you're going to be using it again soon, there's no need to leave the cap off. Just make sure all the excess water has been poured out. If you'd going to be storing it long term without using it, it is a good idea to leave the cap off for a day to let it air out.
@@StirlingSoap I'm trying your shave soap tonight for the 1st time from its tub, is it best to put water in the container beside wetting my brush and load for 30 seconds or so?
@@dogrescuer1321 Add water to the container as needed in small amounts as you build the lather. As you get used to it, you'll be able to tell how much water to add at any given time and it will become second nature.
I do face and bowl lather, but un both cases, when starting the shave, with my DE, I feel the skin dry, no a soft slip, with both tecnics, I dont know what to do for a smooth sensation
Thanks for this excellent video! I'm only 3 days into learning the process wet shaving and was confused about how to use the brush. This video cleared it all up and I'm excited for tomorrow shaving with a proper lather!
Nice video. Sometimes I bowl lather with a synthetic brush and I face lather with my 2-band badger. A question I have is can a damp brush, synthetic or natural hair contaminate the soap puk. I have seen that some shavers just scoop some soap into a bowl and never load the brush from the puk because they say that water can contaminate the soap. Also, I find that bowl lathering with a badger, the brush hogs the soap.
I have loaded directly from the tub with a damp brush for nearly 15 years without ever having a soap go bad. I don't think it is a major issue, unless there are major cleanliness issues where the soap and brush are being stored.
@@StirlingSoap What is the proper procedure after loading from the tub? Do you leave the lid off to let it dry? I've never tried loading from the tub, just take a finger tip of soap and wipe in a bowl.
@@doug196 Just dump out any leftover water and it can be capped if you'll be using it again in the next day or so. If you're going to be putting it away for the long term, I recommend letting it air out overnight.
@ very impressed you actually replied. I’ve had a tub of barbershop for a year or two and I love it. Just placed an order for more of your products yesterday. Can’t wait to try the more of your soaps!!
I like this doggy bowl, so I have 5 different color bowls. Some say the nubs can damage brush bristles. And when I scoop out soap sample, then loathing & lathering are sometimes not easy because of the nubs. What's your opinion, Rod? Anyway I enjoy Stirling soaps very much over 50 kinds.
Hey can anyone tell me if there is a difference between bowl lathering the way shown here and bowl lathering by taking a small bit of soap and putting it in the bowl? Are certain soaps intended to be used one way or the other or is it just personal preference? Is there a difference at all?
Dave at Shaving Time in the UK is still recovering from surgery. He will likely be getting more sometime in December. You might reach out to him to make sure he picks some up in his next order.
I’m a bowl latherer and love Stirling. Nice creamy lather. Great video. I love using your boar brush. For me I enjoy it more then badger and it is an unbelievable value. Happy Easter
Definitely don't put it away with standing water in the jar. If it's moist, it's okay, but you never want to leave water sitting on the soap long term.
@@chrisn9902 Yep. Perfectly fine. If you're putting it away long term without using it, it's a good idea to leave the lid off for day to let any excess moisture evaporate, but if you'll be using it again in the next day or so, it's fine to cap it after the excess has been shaken out.
Great video. I've been sporting a beard since I started wet shaving so I've been scooping soap and bowl lathering. Great comparison between the two and you got the same results. Have a great day
Thanks, Philip. We're doing great. I hope the same for you and your loved ones. I had hoped to be able to re-release the deodorants this year, but unfortunately the prices of the raw materials we use to make them have gotten so high that I simply can't afford to make them.
@@StirlingSoap Hey Rod, I know you are a busy guy so if you get time I have a question: Is a soap that uses potassium Tallowate and sodium Tallowate considered a tallow based soap?
@@alspencer2794 Yes, sodium tallowate and potassium tallowate are just the names for the tallow after it has reacted with the sodium and potassium hydroxide. If an ingredients list (like mine) shows tallow and the the potassium and sodium hydroxide as individual ingredients, it's giving the pre-reacted ingredients that went into the formula.
I do mine almost the same way. In fact, I can do like that either with bowl lather OR face lather. Mine start in a bowl both for bowl lathering and for face lathering.
is it possible to just paint on without the scrubbing. scrubbing generally leaves me very irritated depending on the soap whereas when i paint on i get great coverage which i cannot do with a bowl. i can get a decent consistency but i cant get a good enough coverage with out it going everywhere only a dryer cream works for me when i bowl lather which doesnt really work with straight razor. any work arounds you can think of
If you're just wanting to paint the lather on, you definitely have to build the lather in a bowl or other container prior to taking it to your face. Just using paint brush strokes to build the lather on your face likely isn't going to provide enough agitation to properly build the lather.
Great tutorial video. I recently bought glacial margaritas in the artic & baker street. Amazing scents & performance, definitely couple of steps up from the proraso soap I used when starting out wet shaving this year. I'm curious on how do I maintain the soap for their longevity & what's the shelf life of the soap (used & not yet used ie haven't met with water) Love from Malaysia.
Thank you! Just keep them cool and dry and out of direct sunlight, and they will last for years, if not decades. If you use them and then decide to store them for a long time, it is a good idea to leave the cap off for a day or two to let any excess water evaporate before you put the cap back on.
@@StirlingSoap all my soaps sat for a year( grew a beard) and seemed dried out until I introduced a wet brush to them in the tub and whipped up a later . Still good as the day I bought them . Great products Rod !🇨🇦
Rod👍👍 As crazy as this sounds, I do both. Like you said, either way is fine as long as you get that saturation/hydration point figured out. Oh, by the way, Stirling rocks! Thanks for this video, well done.
Hey Rod! Amazing video, thanks for the tips to put my shave over-the-edge to get the best possible experience out of it. I love your products immensely! However, I know that Deton-8 is a seasonal soap, and with you saying it's a Fall-season soap, I was wondering if that's specifically Fall season or Fall/Winter because I noticed the Deton-8 products starting to dry up (hehe) from the store during last Winter and was worried if the soap was going to be permanently discontinued. I love the V&R Spicebomb scent and It'd be amazing to hear it will make a return this upcoming fall. Thanks!

After only bowl-lathers for at least a year, I made and used two recent face lathers. Fewer passes needed and less water, and for closer shaves. I still prefer bowl lathering because I can control how much soap and how much water more exactly.
Interesting - I leave a bunch of the soap in the bottle of my bowl and just soak/wet my brush for like 30 seconds prior to lathering - and it leaves some soap in the bowl for the next lather (I rinse any lather/foam out)
@@StirlingSoap Oh yeah not knocking it - I just feel like I've been doing it wrong for a while now.. haha - I tried this method this morning and I definitely got a thicker lather, wrist/forearm was burning :-D
haha! Thanks, Bill. Bowl lathering is fun, and whenever I'm making lather that I'm not going to shave with, I always slap it into the sink. I just like the splat sound.
Stirling has been my "go to" soap for some time now so I'm very familiar with the product through repetition. In my opinion it is the best value in the wet shaving market, ounce for ounce. The amount of lather it produces is incredible and the slickness is amazing. Even if you use cartridge razors you should be using Stirling soaps. I don't spend the time to prepare my lather as Rod did in the video. I get great results from face-lathering. I do own bowls but for the most part they are decoration. I also own two of Stirling's synthetic brushes and they are the best. Can't say enough good things about Stirling. Oh, and the soaps smell incredible too!

Hi Rod great video! I have the synthetic in this video, I want to try something a little stiffer is it backbone. Are the black handled synthetics stiffer? Maybe the boar?
I bowl lathered when I first started wet shaving… then I went to face lathering and got the same effect and figured bowl lathering was just a waste of time 😂 just an extra step that isn’t necessary in my opinion. But hey to each their own.. I feel like it’s more of a style thing.

I love your products. Need more Glastonbury stuff it’s the greatest scent ever.
Thank you! I'm hoping to be able to bring back all the Glastonbury stuff just as soon as I can get a consistent supply of sheep tallow.
It is good to see you on RUclips Rod. I am always intrigued to what Stirling is up too. Can't wait till Glacial Margaritas in the Artic is released. Thank you.
Thank you! We're going to do our best to start putting out at least 3-4 videos a month. It's something we've been lacking on for a very long time.
I like to bowl lather, personally, and have definitely enjoyed using your soap and bowl to make that happen.
Thanks! I'm glad they are working well for you.
Nice tutorial Rod.
Thanks, Randy!
Great video Rod
Thank you!
I enjoyed the video Rod, great tips for bowl lathering and face lathering 👍🏾😎👌🏾
Thanks, Marc! I really appreciate it.
Awesome stuff! One of my favourite brands too.
Does that travel bowl fold flat? Looks great.
Thank you! It does collapse flat. It's nothing more than a repurposed slow feed puppy bowl. It's the greatest unexpected lathering tool ever.
@@StirlingSoap Nice, something for my travel bag. Thanks!
@@StirlingSoap YES!!! Scooping a small bit from the puck and putting into a bowl works excellently for EITHER a bowl lather or a face lather.
So that's how they make meringue! Looks great.
😁😁😁
Great products to shave with, pretty clean ingredients but lather.... wow.... still can't believe how much lather is made from such a fair amount of soap. You Sir are a wizzard 😊 Thank you so much!
Thank you very much!
Thanks, nice video, I have my very first soap from Stirling on the way I can't wait it's Candy Cane. If that works out, Bay Rum is in my sights.
Thank you! I really hope you enjoy the soap. If you run into any issues, just let me know and I will be happy to help.
@@StirlingSoap thanks, I just ordered your bowl and a sample BR and Margarita something 👌.
@@dogrescuer1321 Thank you!
I do face and bowl lather, but un both cases, when starting the shave, with my DE, I feel the skin dry, no a soft slip, with both tecnics, I dont know what to do for a smooth sensation
You likely need to add more water to the brush as you are building the lather. How long are you loading the brush with soap?
Thanks for this excellent video! I'm only 3 days into learning the process wet shaving and was confused about how to use the brush. This video cleared it all up and I'm excited for tomorrow shaving with a proper lather!
I'm glad the video helped. If I can be of any assistance while you're learning wetshaving, just drop me an email and I will be happy to help.
Great vid Rod!
Thank you, Tobin!
@@doug196 Thank you for the order!
I really like this video, thank you.
Finally a good video, explaining the stuff I've been wondering, thank youu. :)
My pleasure, thank you for watching!
Fantástic! I use too a baby Pet bowl with very, very good results!
They absolutely work great for lathering!
Nice video. I'm surprised you didn't scrape/scoop the soap and mash into the Bowles bottom.
Thanks, Patrick. I rarely do anything other than load directly from the tub. It's just easier for me.
Where did you find that bowl?
www.stirlingsoap.com/products/collapsible-silicone-shaving-bowl It's just a repurposed slow feed puppy bowl. Works like a charm.
Hey can anyone tell me if there is a difference between bowl lathering the way shown here and bowl lathering by taking a small bit of soap and putting it in the bowl? Are certain soaps intended to be used one way or the other or is it just personal preference? Is there a difference at all?
Either way will work. It's really just a matter of personal preference and what works best for you.
Is the soap soft?
It is quite soft. It's a solid and holds its shape, but you can press your thumb into it with ease.
Did you discount naked and smooth soap? I used a full tub went to purchase a new one here in the UK and no vendor is selling it.
Thanks, Steve. Happy Easter to you as well!
Do you need to drain the extra water out of the shave jar or do anything to dry it out after? Or can you just put the lid back on and leave it ?
Definitely don't put it away with standing water in the jar. If it's moist, it's okay, but you never want to leave water sitting on the soap long term.
@@StirlingSoap so just shake out any excess water and put the lid back on? If it’s slightly moist that’s ok?
@@chrisn9902 Yep. Perfectly fine. If you're putting it away long term without using it, it's a good idea to leave the lid off for day to let any excess moisture evaporate, but if you'll be using it again in the next day or so, it's fine to cap it after the excess has been shaken out.
Great video. I've been sporting a beard since I started wet shaving so I've been scooping soap and bowl lathering. Great comparison between the two and you got the same results. Have a great day
Thanks, Mike. I hope you have a great day as well!
Hi Rod i hope you and your family are doing well, i just wanted to know if any stirling deodorants are coming in the near future.
Thanks, Philip. We're doing great. I hope the same for you and your loved ones. I had hoped to be able to re-release the deodorants this year, but unfortunately the prices of the raw materials we use to make them have gotten so high that I simply can't afford to make them.
I always load up the brush ! Works best for me
Thanks, Jake! Definitely better to overload the brush than to underload it.
I’m doing bowl lathering. 1/4 TSP of soap and 8 - 1/4TSP of water. Awesome soap. Thanks
Thank you!

Hey Rod, I know you are a busy guy so if you get time I have a question:
Is a soap that uses potassium Tallowate and sodium Tallowate considered a tallow based soap?
@@alspencer2794 Yes, sodium tallowate and potassium tallowate are just the names for the tallow after it has reacted with the sodium and potassium hydroxide. If an ingredients list (like mine) shows tallow and the the potassium and sodium hydroxide as individual ingredients, it's giving the pre-reacted ingredients that went into the formula.
@@StirlingSoap Thanks, that clears it up for me
I do mine almost the same way. In fact, I can do like that either with bowl lather OR face lather. Mine start in a bowl both for bowl lathering and for face lathering.
Love Stirling so much and everything you put out is great! Very appreciative!
Thank you very much!
is it possible to just paint on without the scrubbing. scrubbing generally leaves me very irritated depending on the soap whereas when i paint on i get great coverage which i cannot do with a bowl. i can get a decent consistency but i cant get a good enough coverage with out it going everywhere only a dryer cream works for me when i bowl lather which doesnt really work with straight razor. any work arounds you can think of
If you're just wanting to paint the lather on, you definitely have to build the lather in a bowl or other container prior to taking it to your face. Just using paint brush strokes to build the lather on your face likely isn't going to provide enough agitation to properly build the lather.
Great video, a lot of useful tips, thank you!
Thank you!
Great tutorial video. I recently bought glacial margaritas in the artic & baker street. Amazing scents & performance, definitely couple of steps up from the proraso soap I used when starting out wet shaving this year. I'm curious on how do I maintain the soap for their longevity & what's the shelf life of the soap (used & not yet used ie haven't met with water)
Love from Malaysia.
Thank you! Just keep them cool and dry and out of direct sunlight, and they will last for years, if not decades. If you use them and then decide to store them for a long time, it is a good idea to leave the cap off for a day or two to let any excess water evaporate before you put the cap back on.
@@StirlingSoap Truly grateful for the advice. Have a great day ahead !
@@StirlingSoap all my soaps sat for a year( grew a beard) and seemed dried out until I introduced a wet brush to them in the tub and whipped up a later . Still good as the day I bought them . Great products Rod !🇨🇦
@@9_nein_9 Thank you! Yep, all it takes is a little water and they come right back to life!
Stirling Soap The BEST
Thank you, I appreciate that!
Rod👍👍 As crazy as this sounds, I do both. Like you said, either way is fine as long as you get that saturation/hydration point figured out. Oh, by the way, Stirling rocks! Thanks for this video, well done.
Thanks, Terry! You're exactly right. The technique is irrelevant as long as you end up with a thick, well-hydrated lather.
Thanks!
Thank you very much! The Deton-8 is a fall seasonal, and we try to have it sold out by the end of winter. It will return in full Labor Day weekend.
great video. Love the Content
Thank you very much!
my Simpson T3 Trafalgar is the best brush on the market today it's like buying a $200 badger hair brush, no cleaning the brush, no need for a brush stand, fast drying time, well not fall apart like a badger hair can, cheap to buy,
i have owned it for 5 years with know problems wheelchair Larry
I am a face latherer because it's more efficient. Alsi I don't need an extra item on my counter to rinse clean.
99 times out of 100, I go for the ease of face lathering.
After only bowl-lathers for at least a year, I made and used two recent face lathers. Fewer passes needed and less water, and for closer shaves. I still prefer bowl lathering because I can control how much soap and how much water more exactly.
@@10floz30minutes There are definitely quite a few wetshavers with you who prefer the bowl lather. :-)
@@10floz30minutesI've never had a problem controlling water and soap while face lathering
Good soap!
Thank you!
Interesting - I leave a bunch of the soap in the bottle of my bowl and just soak/wet my brush for like 30 seconds prior to lathering - and it leaves some soap in the bowl for the next lather (I rinse any lather/foam out)
Thanks, Mike. There are definitely more than a few ways to get the job done.
@@StirlingSoap Oh yeah not knocking it - I just feel like I've been doing it wrong for a while now.. haha - I tried this method this morning and I definitely got a thicker lather, wrist/forearm was burning :-D
Nice video thanks!
Thank you very much!
Nice tips rod thanks 😊
Thank you!
You are having way too much fun playing in the suds
Thanks, Ray! I hope you've been doing well.
Haha I just realized those are dog feeding/water bowls. Honestly this is extremely clever!
Thank you! I thought so as well. They really do lather like crazy.
Stirling fantastic ❤️
Thanks, Stefano!

Hi Rod great video! I have the synthetic in this video, I want to try something a little stiffer is it backbone. Are the black handled synthetics stiffer? Maybe the boar?
The boar will be your best bet for getting something stiffer. For synthetics, they tend to get "springy" more than stiff.
Educational, interesting, shaving vi
Thank you!
Thank you
I bowl lathered when I first started wet shaving… then I went to face lathering and got the same effect and figured bowl lathering was just a waste of time 😂 just an extra step that isn’t necessary in my opinion. But hey to each their own.. I feel like it’s more of a style thing.
Definitely a matter of personal preference. 🙂

In these Inflationary Times. HERE IS AN EASY WAY TO DO IT MY FRIENDs Use any hard Bar Soap, Tallow or Glycerin based Soaps out there? To fit in any Mugs or Cups? Like" (Mitchells' Wool Fat or Arko Sticks. Just to name a few of them?) You can mix and match your old Soaps? Cut up the soap on a paper plate, pour your soap chunks with the shavings from the Paper Plate into a Mug, cover the soap with a small amount of water, and microwave your soap. For about a minute or so? Place a paper plate under your mug in case it bubbles out of your cup? If it foams up, STOP. The water keeps it from burning itself up. (DON'T OVER WATER YOUR SOAP??) Easy, does it? Let cool don't want to Crack the Mugs or Cups you're using? (You just want it to Congeal in your Mug or Cup') it is very hot and watery'''''. let it cool in PLACE'. after it cools, put it in a Sunny Window, until the Soap hardens? When using your soaps, use Dry Brush Less Water. It thickens the soap, making it easier to use on your face. Save your Money, spend it on your wife, don't listen to the shave Mafia. It saves me time and Money. Wheelchair Larry Happy New Year. Your Mileage may vary?
