    Watching Kirby standing there with a dress shirt and tie on….under a silk robe….while he shaves…..is a hoot. With me at the sink….my upper body is bare….I have water and soap all over me…and the basin and counter are a mess. I can see right now that I’m going to have to put in some serious work on my shaving etiquette.

    Jeeze. So you wasted like 14 gallons of hot water, used a lathering bowl as big as somebody's skull, then finally produced this wimpy little lather? I could have just applied some shaving cream directly to my face and gotten more lather from it, and done it without wearing a 3-piece suit and a silk overcoat borrowed from a villain in some James Bond movie.

      For real, I don't understand how there are so many positive comments about the lather. Must be a lot of beginners who don't know how a good lather should look like. His advice about the water is plain wrong. You don't want to skimp on water, you need a lot of it, _especially_ with a natural hair brush

      @@dappershaves It's a matter of preference, just like a lot of straight razor shavers prefer really thin lather, because you don't need all that glide / protection, you just need water!!! There is a reason why it's called: "Wet Shaving" 🙂 Also if someone is experts in making quick shaving soap, and perfect shaves, it's barbers from Turkey for instance, and they sure love a lot of water in their soaps 🙂

    Thank you for that advice, while I love to lather up for a shave I have never been able to achieve a decent lather.
    But I know what it should look like, because my grandfather, a Gold Miner who retired to live in Richmond, adjoining the Melbourne CBD use to use a cutthroat razer, but on a Friday afternoon he woúld visit the Barbershop, in historic Swan Street for a professional shave. And if I was around he would take me.
    Watching you prepare the shave cream was a wonderful experience, because in my mind's eye, I was back in the Barbershop, standing alongside an old Gold Miner who was reliving his youth in the fabulously wealthy Victorian Gold Fields, where his Father had been killed when a tunnel collapsed.
    I find it amazing how watching you could totally transport me back 80 years in history, when the Goldfields made Melbourne the wealthiest City in the World, at that time, and when only 30 years earlier, one person in six, in Melbourne, was Chinese. Which is why we have some of the World best Chinese Restaurants. Thanks for the memories. Phil.

    The three T’s (TOBS, Trumper, and Truefitt) are all fine traditional English brands, but the best the UK has to offer is Castle Forbes. For years, I used Trumper Limes. Once I tried CF Lime, I never turned back. CF Lime, a Kent Silvertip Badger brush, and a scuttle is an unbeatable trifecta!

    After watching your video on shaving; I pulled out my Old Spice shaving cup and a couple of Colgate shaving soap cakes (about 50 + years old) and went to work. My old badger brush needed replacing but found some on Ebay (Ever Ready 100) bought 2 and paired with my old but classic Gillette adjustable slimline DE razor(my dads) and went to work. Hardest part is getting the right adjustments on the razor without bleeding out (I'm on blood thinner) after accomplishing this task; the rest went pretty smooth. After all these years, I still had some muscle memory on holding the razor; brings back so many pleasant memories of enjoying the masculine ritual of shaving. Advice, shave after showing, your beard is fully hydrated and standing; provides a much closer shave.

    I’ve been wet shaving for more than 40 years and have never seen anyone beat the brush against the bowl like that. Sorry, Kirby, maybe time for you to learn from us. To generate a thick, frothy Cool Whip type lather you need to whisk that brush around the bowl in a circular motion and a very light touch. Mashing the brush down like that and pounding it into the bowl, where did you learn that style? I imagine you go through a couple brushes a year with that technique. BTW, it wouldn’t hurt to have a bowl with some sort of texture in it for the brush and soap to fight against. Good luck, young fella.

      You need to work on yourself. Enjoy the shaves but don't overbuy unnecessarily. If you like different scents buy samples of lotions and soaps. You only need one razor, one brush and one brand of blades that you find the best. You're doing a disservice to yourself if you constantly change the equipment because no way they all give the perfect shave.

    • @sicariusperemo3789
      @sicariusperemo3789 9 месяцев назад

      There is not much to add on that information really, Creams tends to have more moisturizing properties, because of how they're made, where as Soaps, well, they can dry out the skin more, depending on how they're made, but all in all, it doesn't matter if you face lather, bowl lather, palm lather etc, it's just personal preference how you like to build your lather, and whether you like using Creams or Soaps, the result will be the same though 🙂

    Whoever watches this video as a beginner wet shaver, please take my advice and forget this video ever existed. He didn't even build the lather, let alone build it the right way. You need a lot more water. What he, and a lot of other shavers, suggests is wrong. You _want_ a *lot* of water. It's the only way to create a lubricating protection that will allow your razor to glide across your face and hair effortlessly. By creating pasty lather you're essentially applying dry foam to your face, just like one from the can.
    If you want to create the failure from this video you might as well rub in the cream on your face with your fingers, you will achieve the same result and save yourself 10 minutes of trying to create this same thing.
    Also this video is proof that expensive gear won't guarantee you any result. Me and a lot of wet shavers could make an infinitely better lather with a 2$ cream and a 5$ brush

    Watching him beat the piss out of that brush was difficult to see. I use a marble shave bowl with grooves on the inside and I have never once used my brush as a hammer as shown here. I build extremely thick lather to the point where it’s overflowing out of the bowl while using a similar amount of TOBS shave soap. I use circular motions only to avoid ruining the bristles in my knot. High quality High Mountain white badger brushes aren’t cheap, so I’d like to preserve my bristles.

    Man this video could’ve been 2 minutes long and this feels like you have no idea what’s going on lmao. That looked like much more of a struggle and I just did it for my first time with far better results.

    Hot water can damage natural hair brushes! It can also rot the hair and produce a poor smell. Only use warm water with brushes. Hot water can also melt the glue over time which in turn ruins the brush more.

    is this better than using shaving foam out of a spray can?

    • @RoySmith-qd9uw
      @RoySmith-qd9uw Год назад

      yes it is, it does not clog up the razor and leaves a better feeling on your face. You may want to consider on moving onto a double edge safety razor, the initial cost is a little higher than buying new cartridges for your razor. But in the long run it works out to be cheaper and a better shave. Yes, spray can and cartridges are a faster way of shaving. But consider what you get is what you put into it. want great shave, takes a little more time. If you adventure down this road of double edge safety razor shaving, please don't buy cheap safety razor, as you get what you pay for. Mine are around $60.00 CDN Timor and I have a Merkur.

    I don't use anywhere near that much cream and get much better lather in a fraction of the time with much less effort. Maybe because my process starts with boiling water. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Forgive me, I was somewhat bothered by your poor economy of water. Surely you can let the brush absorb the water while soaking in the bowl without running the water needlessly.

    In these Inflationary Times. HERE IS AN EASY WAY TO DO IT MY FRIENDs Use any hard Bar Soap, Tallow or Glycerin based Soaps out there? To fit in any Mugs or Cups? Like" (Mitchells' Wool Fat or Arko Sticks. Just to name a few of them?) You can mix and match your old Soaps? Cut up the soap on a paper plate, pour your soap chunks with the shavings from the Paper Plate into a Mug, cover the soap with a small amount of water, and microwave your soap. For about a minute or so? Place a paper plate under your mug in case it bubbles out of your cup? If it foams up, STOP. The water keeps it from burning itself up. (DON'T OVER WATER YOUR SOAP??) Easy, does it? Let cool don't want to Crack the Mugs or Cups you're using? (You just want it to Congeal in your Mug or Cup') it is very hot and watery'''''. let it cool in PLACE'. after it cools, put it in a Sunny Window, until the Soap hardens? When using your soaps, use Dry Brush Less Water. It thickens the soap, making it easier to use on your face. Save your Money, spend it on your wife, don't listen to the shave Mafia. It saves me time and Money. Wheelchair Larry Happy New Year. Your Mileage may vary?
