Interesting these new M1s have been in the hands of most reviewers for the last few days & most have put it through it's paces, some to the extreme & it has stood the test of time, so i know you must see it for yourself but bottom line is Apple has indeed unleashed a beast of a product particularly for videographers or anyone seeking to take advantage of all this power, thanks for the video!

Agreed. Mine is amazing. The only niggling things is how long they will last. Because nothing is serviceable, just one thing has to fail and it is bricked.

@ZONEofTECH The crash you demonstrated at the 9:20 mark is something that multiple users are reporting. There is a 15-page thread (and counting) devoted to this issue on MacRumors. It does not seem to affect all machines, but since you own one where it does, can you test it further with your machine and perhaps do a video about it?

9:20 - this was skipped over without any attention but to me its a big deal. Why would a new laptop crash within 10 mins of use. All my apple products are so incredibly buggy. I know ill get a crash like that when i get it, and my heart will sink when finding out the M1 doesnt fix all its problems.
You got some stuff wrong. The new design looks thicker but it is thinner than the older model by half an inch or so. The middle part of the MacBooks that count. Also, fast charging only works with MagSafe. Usbc will charge, just not as fast as MagSafe
USB-C _will_ fast charge the 14 inch if you use a 96 - 100 W adapter.
Thanks for comparing the 14” to the old 15”. I keep debating weather or not I should go from my 15” to a smaller display cuz the mobility of my current MacBook is bugging me. But this video helped me settle my decision.
That crash was not random, 4k hdr RUclips playback causing these crashes for a number of people especially if you scroll through comments as your video is playing. It’s unclear if it’s a hardware issue or a software issue. Doesn’t seem to happen on non hdr videos.

I went to the store today. 14" and 16" are not thick...just the perfect design. Weight is all right as well. I think most people would be just fine with a base model MBA but if you like to have lots of open chrome tabs, get a 16GB version and save up the money for the M2. I find it funny that lots of RUclipsrs avoid the direct comparison between 16GB M1 vs base model 14". That would make the most sense to me. Those who need to spend 6k on a max they already did. The question is does somebody who edits 1080p and 4k h.265 video for a living need to spend twice the money? My guess is ... Not really.
I’m more curious to know how does the 14” M1 Max compares against the 16” M1 Max in terms of performance. Has Apple compromised in the smaller one just because it’s “small” and Apple wanted to save the best for the top of the line flagship 16” model? Or is it just the difference in aesthetic appeal without any performance tradeoff?
There is at least a difference in cooling system.
I think they will perform similar but maybe the cooling in the 16’ would help
You can get the menu bar to always be black. Either through accessibility settings or through the app “forehead”

btw I've now got my own MacBook Pro M1 Pro and did the latest update for the Affinity Apps. Apple seems to have added a bit of code into macOS that lets developers slide menus across to avoid the notch. But this will require developers to update their software for the latest Macs. Also the menubar can become fully populated with menu items and this is not helping. In fact it is hard to tell whether the software has been updated to avoid the notch or simply there is something under the notch but hidden.
Either way I can not see the point of the notch other than to allow Apple to claim the screen is actually larger (measured diagonally) when in reality it is not.

Interesting to see the visible vents compared to older Macbook Pro, that's why there were heat when Max Tech did a thermal test showing higher temp just below the screen

Safari was updated for the new Macs so he may not have updated. No problems here.

To those in the comments hating the thickness and weight, take a look at comparable Windows options. And remember that the Air is meant for consumers, and the new Pros are meant for professionals.
As somebody who hated the 2016 - 2020 MacBook Pros, this is a stunning return to form! Apple really knocked it out the park (apart from the notch)!

Since it has become thicker, I actually wish that the glowing Apple logo would be back. I also wish Apple didn't ditch the Macbook Pro branding at the front lol. Other than that, this is a holy beast even though it's just a base model.
Why is the Apple branding that important to you? I've heard this from others as well. I'm not sure I understand the reasoning.
Personally I couldn't care less. But now it's thicker, I wish they would have gone back to 2014-2015 type keyboards. I tried the new keyboard and my old mac has sadly a way better keyboard. The new one is even slightly thicker than my 2014 macbook pro I think.

Any comment about 2 ISSUES: 1. Ghosting due to pixel refresh (which is DEFINITELY THERE as I saw it in the store. 2. The rubber feet are the store was already worn down. Thin and white. Very easily worn.

Hi, First, Thanks a lot for taking the time to review tech products. We really love your insights. Have you gotten the recent M1 Pro/Max MacBook Pro? Have you tested out if the read/write speeds max out before the 8tb. Basically, my question is, will M1 Max fully specced out be faster than fully specced out on all but storage. Between just 4TB and 8TB, is there are reason to expect 4TB to be faster than 8TB for any reason? I remember reading something similar about 2015/2016 MacBooks where the 1TB version was faster than 2TB due to the system having to maintain and manage a larger drive.

If it's 3d graphics get the M1 Max processor but if not M1 Pro at least 10 core cpu if anything but totally up to you and do more research
Those vents there will be an issue later... you'll get the air's path on the screen. It used to happen with the older models...
Did the 13" 2015 model have that issue? BEcause I had one screen go bad on those, the protective coating and outer layer was almost de-laminated...

Other companies have indicated their new laptops will also have a notch. Looks like the panel maker is determining the notch.

I think it was a Safari bug on macOS. Apple put through a Safari update yesterday and that should hopefully solve that.

I would love to see a comparison of M1 Max 24 GPUs vs. M1 Max 32 GPUs.
I don't think the performance advantage justifies the extra money, but being able to plug in more monitors is always useful for the future, hence I am interested/curious about the "base" model of the M1 Max chip.
For those of you old enough to remember. This black keyboard has a very retro 80s look. Think TI-99/4A.

Apparently on the new MacBooks the brightness is 600 nits when your watching regular content and it goes up to 1000-1600 when viewing hdr content most likely to save battery life

I’m very curious to see how the notch will be with apps with a long menu bar like InDesign or Photoshop… they cannot work in full screen mode.
That notch is such an eyesore. The camera is definitely better although I don't think butchering the screen was worth it... Maybe they'll let you make the menu bar completely black 😅
I am proud owner of a macbook pro 15" mid 2014 (starting to show its age) and using everyday a Transcend JDL360 sd card. These new macbooks are compelling enough for me to upgrade. Seing that the SD card slot has come back, I am curious to know if my JDL360 is compatible with the new macbook pro M1?

The screen did not get as bright in the store as I thought. In fact, I felt it was kind of dim turned up all the way.
At the apple store? Yeah i get it that place is SUPER bright.
Compared to what? Their are not many screens on the market that get brighter then 1000 nits of sustained brightness.

@@jjchockey it only sustains 1000 nits and peaks at 1600 nits of brightness when playing hdr video. Otherwise it maxes out at 500 nits.
I like that the vant between the screen and the keyboard is bigger, I bricked my 13 inch last year because a small piece of something got stuck in that vent. while I won't be testing it, the larger space will make it easier to clean and ensure that doesn't happen again

On my MacBook Air with 16 GB ram, I got 52 frames per second for Aztek Ruin. I'm guessing upgrading to the base 14" won't really make a huge difference for those of us who have M1 chips with 16 GB ram... Hm...

I got my MacBook Pro 16 M1Pro last week and it crashed a few times in a week. I did updated to the latest OSX 12.0.1. I thought something went wrong during migration assistant and I wiped everything and redo the migration 3 times. I called Apple and they couldn't figure it out, so I returned it. I thought it was bug in new OS or migration assistant errors. After seeing this video, i know i wasn't alone. I hope you can dig into the cause because I do like this macbook.
