I found a YTer that did it right. He had 4x 4K fpv drone footage stacked and put in a 2x2 tile layout in the screen and scrubbed through them all on the baseline 14in mbp. It actually went through pretty good. It lagged a little bit but when compared to his desktop is was the same as running 1x of the same footage, on a pc that had 64gb ram and a 3070

That would give you the ideal benchmark.

Yes, the base model will do just fine now but what if your workflow changes and the performance you need increases over time as you improve on your skill? Well I seem to be one of the few people that actually need the M1 Max, with color grading in resolve 4k - 6k - 8k footage with basic correction is fine probably even on this one, but once you start throwing open fx into the mix, noise reduction, etc. Shit goes out the can, especially with render times, so yeah. If I was just editing of course this is the way to go unless you want the bigger display, but get the M1 Pro, Max is for heavy duty usage. Editing 4k - 8k isn't heavy duty...

Hi! I am a graphic and web designer, and soon I am going to train in UX/UI. I have a MacBook Pro 13” from 2016 that I am looking forward to upgrading because it is too slow, noisy and gets very hot. A few months ago I was able to test the 14” and 16” M1 Pro for a few days, both with 10c/16c/16Gb/1Tb, and the truth is that they worked really well. What I am going to use the most is going to be the Adobe design suite, Figma, specifically Premiere or FCPX for something normal (4K with 1 or 2 layers, some color correction and some transition), some RAW photo development of a 26mpx APS-C in Capture One and video calls with Zoom. Do you think that with these models I have equipment for 3/4 years? It's that on Amazon they are usually discounted, and I have even seen the 14” 8c/14c/16Gb/512Gb for €1,995 currently, but I don't know if it will fall short of power. The idea is not to think too much in the future and use it rather 3/4 years, since I think that Apple's processors by then will have improved a lot. Let's see if you can give me your opinion, based on your experience, to go for the base 14” or jump to the 16” with which I would gain screen and battery, although I will do the big jobs with a 4K monitor. Thank you and sorry for the long message!

Whilst they are right it usually does come down to preference and situational needs, you feel like you just wasted your time or even just being roped in the most expensive best of the best which you don't need. This right here just helped a lot of people make up their minds lol thank you.

PS- I went with the base model and I'm a graphic designer. I couldn't honestly justify upgrading the 512gb ssd to 1tb for £300-400! (disgraceful pricing). if I really need to ill just hook up an external 1tb ssd or whatever i need. No worries. Don't forget the base model is still about £500 more than the 13" M1. For anyone wondering how much ram you actually need (i was really concerned) - I have had 2 browsers open and 3 apps open (2 being adobe illustratror and after effects) and it uses not much over 3gb ram! They have really streamlined memory footprints, i think it's because of how the cpu, gpu and ram are hooked up to one another and the fact that it utilises ssd instead hdd. so i'd say there aren't many people who would actually need 32gb of ram instead of the standard 16gb.

Considering one of these to replace my current (weak) laptop and desktop. I plan on using it for general use, photo editing (Sony RAW in Lightroom), maybe some super light photoshop or exposure stacking, light games with friends (think like CS), ideally with the usual background apps open. Discord, spotify, mail, msg, etc.
Do you think I will rapidly be hitting swap usage on the 16GB config? It's a huge (450CAD) jump to 32GB and I'm thinking it may be better to just save the cash, but not at the expense of hardware life...those SSD's ain't replaceable. Would really appreciate your professional opinion, thanks!
