Would you be put off about buying a 14” M1 Pro MacBook after seeing this video? UPDATE: Vadim and Max Tech and I have discussed differences in temperatures we saw, and it turns out iStatistica hasn't been updated in a while to feature node temps for the SOC, so the numbers we saw were broadly for much of the rest of the system. While the SOC does get hotter, I still found in my test that surface temperatures and fan noise wasn't as bad as what they found in their test. Definitely an interesting conundrum!
Frankly, I thought I would be upgrading immediately, but the truth is that my current M1 13” MBP does everything I need to do, and I’m the bottleneck in my workflow. So I can’t justify upgrading at this point.
Hey Luke, could you do a comparison of the two screen sizes (14 and 16") in regard to the older 15" screens? I would like to upgrade from a 2014 15" MacBook Pro, and I'm not sure whether the 14" with the new screen would be sufficient, or if I should go for the 16".
Comparison to the 16” Pro and Max would be great as well!

For any of you wondering, I have the 14 Inch, M1 Max (w 32 gpu cores) and 32gb ram. I'm getting on average between 3-5 hours of battery life. I'm thinking I might have a faulty unit, but if it's not the battery is everything but great.
i'm most interested in seeing a comparison of two 16" models, one with the Pro 10/16 and the other with the binned Max 10/24 (both with 32gb ram, and 2tb ssd)
I own a mid 2012 retina macbook pro that has served me well for music production and light gaming, but my god that fan noise!! I had to replace the right fan once and re-paste after watching one of your vids. I have ordered the 16" m1 Max and I am about to be blown away by the difference for sure. I am happy to see I won't have to deal with that awful fan noise for a while. Great video!
for someone who mostly browses the web and watches video but wants the best Mac (display, ports, design), is the entry-level 14-inch Pro perfect? And is it worth it to go to the 16" for this? I have the 16-inch and I’m hesitating to downgrade to 14 because it might be overkill
I wonder: If you use Macs Fan Control to max out the fans - will the device be faster? It works (the program), I can confirm that from my 16“ but that would be an interesting test.
I doubt it- historically changing the fan speeds hasn't had an effect because Apple prioritized max performance over temperatures. In this case, because there is so much thermal headroom I suspect the fans would lead to lower temperatures, but have no effect on performance
Hey Luke, the blanket part is purely genuinely genius. I have a question, though. Did you try to put the two macbooks on your lap and feel how much heat they produce ?
the biggest advantge intel chips gave us was runing windows for real and gettting access to tons of games we lost all that in apple silicone but we did gain so much more in return.
I would like to see a fan noise comparison between the 14” M1 and the intel 16” while in clamshell mode. I ask because i use my intel 16” macbook in clamshell configuration with it connected to two monitors at my desk. It runs like a hairdryer under load. I desire replacing it with a 14” for lighter travelling, but fear the increase in fan noise of a smaller chassis when compared to my 16” intel model. Is it possible that Apple’s new 14” is quieter than the intel 16’” model under load, or am i getting caught up in the hype? P.S. Good work on the video. Nicely done, and thanks for the time lapse and cutting straight to the figures. I appreciate it.
I love my MacBook Air M1. No fans and the performance is more than enough for me. 4K video editing and musicproduction is no problem at all. Thanks Apple for the best Computer ive ever had! Edit: After i bought the M1 MacBook Air. I wasent even once on my 2.000$ Windows PC. Its a dustcatcher now:-)
Yeah, there's the hype for these undeniably desirable new MacBooks, but frankly, the M1 stuff is so good for the needs of so many users, with astounding value for an Apple product.
An awsome computer the air to bad it dosent have a better screen and 120hz also. Then I would be all over it. Thinking on getting the 16 inch mb pro 16gb/1tb or if I shall wait on the new air which is coming this year hopefully. But don't really see the problem with carrying a 16 inch which is like and 15 inch either. So will probably get the mb pro soon.
@@triple965 still not sure! Visited the apple store today, the 16” really does feel big in a way my prior 13’s and 15’s haven’t. If I can get 120hz 4K on my external OLED, then I’ll almost definitely stay 14”
@@pauljohnston568 thanks for getting back to me. Yes, I felt the 16 inch too. It was heavy chunky. I like the portability and spec on the 14 - I’ll probably stick to it!
The Mac is Back baby. This is as exciting a time in Macdom as the mid 2000s during the PowerPC > Intel transition. A rebirth of the Mac. I love how apple is unafraid to abandon a platform when it is starting to hold their product line back, and also admit when they are wrong with design choices and give pro users what they ask for like how they did with the 2019 Mac Pro and now these bad boys.
I agree this is a very exiting time, I was a little sad not to see standard USB Type A ports like they kept on the mac mini, but I'll definitely take a HDMI and SD slot back!
Switching from a 16" to a 14" MacBook is life-changing lol it feels good to be able to toss around a laptop and sit comfortably on my lap again after 4 years lol it's so portable and the 14" is just the perfect size!!!
I can't praise Luke Miani enough your coverage of the new MacBook Pro has been so thorough and detailed but at the same time you convey the information in an easy to follow style that is easy to understand which makes it so easy to make an informed buying decision. You guys ROCK nothing but love from the UK ♥️
Also, a lot of fictitious hype. 🤷♂️ like this video. Coz no matter if performance may be slightly different, the deciding factor is actually the size and portability. Any possible small difference in performance is negligible. Both are fast and amazing. No need to watch the video to know that.
@@maxroman2010 if, hypothetically, the 14” thermal throttled under the lightest of loads but the 16” didn’t at all, I think that could be the deciding factor for a lot of people. Fortunately that’s not the case, but there’s no harm in putting it to the test.
I got 16GB and was worried at first. Thought I'd throw everything at it and if it wasn't enough just exchange but bro... It handles everything, Photoshop/Lightroom, 6k editing in Davinci, Final Cut, etc. Everything's smooth.
Thanks for another video on the M1 Pro/Max. It would be awesome to see battery life comparison between M1 Pro 16'' and M1 Max 16''. The Verge states that there is big hit on battery with Max and that Apple confirms that.
Not if you are not taxing GPU that much. On the other hand, powerful GPU is the reason why people go with Max. For my needs (web development) it’s waste of money and energy. Everybody has to decide whether his/her workflow requires even full Pro and not just binned one with 8 cores total.
@@ZhuJo99 Actually according to Apple it is the other way around. The Verge: "I asked Apple, and the company confirmed the M1 Max uses more power both when idle and when active, but it noted that the M1 Max might potentially be more efficient if you run specific multi-core GPU workloads all day."
Would love a direct comparison of the 8 core and 10 core versions of the 14 inch! Thanks for all your work on these, eased a bunch of my concerns about this purchase already!
Very comprehensive comparison! Imo most ppl who are looking at the 14" prolly rank portability q highly so the 16" jump might be too much. I was curious if the lower spec/binned 8 core 14" MBP has different battery life and charging speeds (67W vs 94W) compared to the other 14" models since its got less cores perhaps it consumes less power, lasts longer and runs cooler? I think it's a consideration cuz ppl considering the 14" MBP need the portability and battery life is a big part of that, would really appreciate such a comparison!!
I picked up the 16" base model with 1TB today... for me the 14" was a tiny bit too small IMO.. but afterall both a great devices! The screens on both devices are freaking great and the keyboard feels almost like my old 2013 MBP. I think that the "poor" battery life on the 14" one is no problem for most of the people.. most of the time the laptop is already plugged in.
Yep, that's why I went with the 14" over the 16". It's my primary "mobile" computer that doesn't spend most of it's time on my desk at the office or home. So it being fairly light and compact, and easily used in my lap or at a coffee shop/airplane makes it more useful in my opinion.
The 14" base model 8 CPU/14 GPU will last 5-10% longer than the 14" with 10 CPU/16 GPU version. The 14" Base model battery life will be on par with the 16" base model. I owned both for 3 three weeks. I ended up returning both to get the 14" 10 CPU/16 GPU model.
As soon you try both in stores... you will realize: Ofc the 16" is "just" 0,5kg heavier, but in fact, the 16 AND 14" models fit easily into average and even small notebook cases/backpacks! In my opinion the 14" even feels thick, meanwhile the 16" with its "huge" screen (its just ok, i would have wished 17"...) is fine with its thickness. And only considering it weights just 20% more (for 42% bigger battery, much more silent, bigger fans and better thermals in overall!)... the 16" model has is own awesome advantages. I just tried a 14" convertible as my "on the go" notebook... its awesome... just 1,1kg or so.... especially with the touchscreen in tablet mode its really enjoyable, but in notebook mode, the 14" gets annoying, especially if you have more than 2 windows side by side open (or you just scale it down so you have to use a microscope) With the 16".... the bigger screen makes it so much more usable, totally worth the bigger footprint and especially the "just" 0,5kg more!
@@graciashermano725 Haven't decided yet but probably going to go with the 14 inch 10 core, I have the 2019 15 inch now, but can't justify the price of the 16 LOL
This video is really interesting after watching Max Tech do almost identical comparisons. Their 14 inch consistently was hitting over 100 degrees under heavy load with very audible fans and their 16 inch never really got hotter than 90 degrees with fans rarely audible. Equal performance in the benchmarks but 14 was always much hotter and louder than the 16
@@ProphetOfTruth_ I wonder too what happened. They used different tools as far as I noticed. I hope Luke's result are the accurate ones. 90°C and above is a big NOGO for me.
Yes they used TG Pro and Jerry Schulze just pinned a comment in his comparison video too that TG Pro is reporting 10 degrees higher than other software. So its a Software bug, Temperatures are actually really low like Luke tested.
The same review from the Maxtech channel the results were much different. Both had the same performance but the 14' was constantly above 95C and the fan went crazy whilst the 16' was dead silent and temperature around 85C. Also the battery of 14' was at 3% and for the 16' was at 36% after the tests
Maxtech results are actually an outlier. I have seen a lot of these videos and their results are frankly odd. Luke's using a different program to check temperatures and his results are consistent with what I've seen elsewhere.
Exactly - MaxTech used different tools and they claim their tools give correct results. But I don't believe that MBP can reach 105C and the case is not that hot like in case of Intel based Macs
I own a Lenovo Legion 5i RTX 3060 and I'm thinking 'bout going to the Mac side. My laptop is 15" so I was expecting the 16" Macbook to be BIGGER.. but the Macbook is SMALLER, lol.. Lenovo 15" size: 36cm x 26cm Macbook Pro M1 16" size: 35cm x24cm I was astonished thinking I'd have to sacrifice space but my laptop is not that big, it can fit ANYWHERE easily, in any backpack or coffee shop table.. You folks who are undecided GO FOR 16" !!!
Its amazing how little the fans are used in these machines compared to their intel predecessors Also: Notice how the 16" was named "MacBook's MacBook Pro" during the thermal test
My youtube video on this would go like this: “Bigger laptop = bigger battery, screen and better cooling.” “Small laptop = less battery, screen and slightly less better cooling.” “Same performance..and thanks for watching my video on the new M1 chips”
“Poops & giggles” I’m dead 😂😂😂 another awesome video I’ve never watched sooo many videos about Mac or MacBooks then I have since I started watching your videos keep them coming very well done 😎🤙🏻🍎💻🖥
Nice review and very useful testing. I would like to see a comparison between the base 14" and the un-binned M1-pro 14" in terms of performance and (most importantly) battery life, both in stress conditions, which you already cover very well, but also in lighter common use (even pros need to browse the web and watch youtube). If the base 14" gets 1-2 hours of extra battery life, I think this would be more valuable to me than the extra performance I would rarely need. Keep up the great work, you got yourself a new sub.
I wish they would offer 14 and 16 inch models with regular M1 chips. I would really consider this, since I don’t really need powerful GPU, but 13 inch mbp has worse screen, touchbar, no MagSafe, etc… Imagine how much battery life 16 inch with M1 could have….
Another thing to note is that AppleCare+ is US$120 more expensive for the 16" than for the 14" (three years of coverage). So if you plan on getting either of them with the AppleCare+, the price difference would be US$320.
What do you prefer for 32 gb ram btw M1 pro 10 CPU 16 GPU vs M1 max 10 CPU 24 GPU for $200 difference. Is there any battery life or performance differences between these models?
Terrific video ( as well as the Pro vs Max one - which helped me decide that my use case is not-Max). My big decision now is 14 vs 16. I've spec'd out both at 10 CPU / 16 GPU / 16 RAM and 1TB SSD and at Amazon there's a $150 difference to go to 16". Since totally portable isn't an issue, and I do not graphics-intensive work, I'm thinking the 16". Have I missed anything here? PS ---- any thoughts on 16 RAM vs 32 RAM? I do some amateur music composition as well as digital photo editing. Really amateur, never going pro. Want to keep machine 5-7 years. Thank you.
I still prefer to buy 16 inch MacBook Pro is better than smaller laptops. To be honest with you that I'm 13 inch Mac user for years long time until last year I bought MacBook Pro 16 inch late 2019 ended loved it to use it a lot! I decided to get 13 inch MacBook Pro it's won't fit for me.
Isn’t a crime to have a miniled display like this and use an external monitor? That said, shouldn’t we go for the 16” to enjoy this almost “OLED” screen?
Is it worth it to get the M1 Max? I definitely want the 16” over the 14” but is it worth the $400 dollars for the 32-core? I want to produce music, do some light gaming and learn how to video edit.
The 14 inch is way lighter. The 16 is a really fat boi. I prefer the portably and it is not often you’ll be hitting the max on these machines. These stress tests are great but practical daily use doesn’t hit the max tolerances all the time.
Apple moving away from Intel has taken them at least 5 years forward. The macbooks of 2019 is a joke. Started with the M1 Air last year and getting my 16" M1 Pro in a few days, can't wait!
So basically, the 14" is gonna be louder than the 16" M1 Pro, that is to say audible instead of silent, both with sustained max performance, and worlds quieter than the Intel 16". This is great. Finally we have a MacBook Pro that doesn't sound like a fighter jet when you push it, and doesn't thermal throttle (and no performance penalty for the smaller size!) I cannot wait till mine shows up.
Luke, Thanks for the videos! I'd like to see more Pro vs Max comparisons. Rendering isn't that important to me. I need to see more FCPX and Premier Timeline work with multiple videos, effects and transitions. The Verge comparison showed a little bit but they were vague with details. Blender workflow (not rendering) would be nice to see too, but I guess we need someone who knows how to use Blender to do that.
I was reading some comments elsewhere, and apparently TG Pro was just updated this week to measure the new chips properly. The previous version apparently showed lower temps, incorrectly.
@@thebuddercweeper I agree that it seems odd. My understanding (i.e., TIL...) is that there's an issue when temps get past 105º in most laptops. However, I think it's safe to assume that Apple has done a lot of tests to destruction, so they won't let the SOC's get too hot. "Too hot" meaning "damaging the computer.
@@t185bear yeah, I mean, *if* apple did that I’m sure it would be in the safest way possible, but to me personally it would make more sense for those to be the incorrect ones. Although, who knows, maybe everyone’s wrong and it’s somewhere in between the 60° and the 106°
MaxTech just released the same comparison in which the 14" went up to 106°C ! How come there is such a big difference between their thermal results and the ones in this video ?
@@sindhusekar1 still, we’re talking about a 40°C difference ! My guess is the software used doesn’t calculate temperature the same way, which seems baffling to me but that’s the best I’be got
So Max Tech posted this in a comment on their vid “we are using TG fan pro which was updated just before we shot the video and it's the first app to properly read the temps. All other apps we tested as well as TG fan Pro prior to this update where barely pulling any sensors and the hottest sensors were from power modules and not CPU cores and those only shows up to like 50-60C. We also test with thermal cams and these laptops heat ip the chassis to 45C just like Intel macs which show CPU temps of up to 100C like M1 macs so there's no way these 10c M1 Pro chips that use 30W and heat chassis to 45C only hit 55-60C in the CPU.”
Great comparison/review Luke. I'm still happy with my ordering of the 16" MB Pro Max. I thought about the 14" but my aging eyes decided on its big brother. Can't really go too wrong with either form factor, however.
Thank you for this very informative video. Great work! To me, the most surprising thing was just how well the older M1 Mac in your test compared. It seems like Apple's original M1 machines remain very competitive, especially considering the cost differences. Thanks again.
First of all, thank you so much Luke! Your tests are very, very helpful to us'ns in picking out the right product for ourselves. From a performance standpoint, it sounds like Apple is able to keep the 14" performing just as well as the 16", but they do it by running the fan harder, the downside being it cranks through battery power faster and some fan noise. To me, the takeaway is: If the fan noise is modest and when you're working it hard it's plugged into power, the 16" has no advantage on performance. It's real advantages are screen size, battery life (if you used it on battery a ton) and a little better sound. It's downside is portability. To me, there's no comparison. When I'm mobile, portability matters WAY more than a modest screen size increase and a little better battery life. Frankly, if I really care about screen size, not only is 14" not big enough, neither is 16". if I'm in my office, I can fix the image size and sound quality issues with an external display and reasonably decent speakers. Alternately, I just get the M1 Max Mac Mini whenever that rolls out... and I probably will. I can see the 16" being an advantage for some, but it seems like that's a VERY specific customer where the laptop needs to be SOMEWHAT portable... but not TOO portable. Just my 2¢.
For some of us as we get older larger screen with larger font is a good thing. Also professionals who need a lager workspace they should go with the 16-inch. Thing is normals should not purchase the new MacBook Pro devices. Thing is Apple does not make a 16-inch MacBook Air, and they never should.
Apple should absolutely make a 16-inch MacBook Air (or just drop the air lineup completely and just make computers for normal users). Many people want more screen real-estate but have no use for these monstrously powerful chips. You shouldn’t have to pay for a bulky, ugly, and overpowered laptop to get a larger screen. That’s absurd.
I'm in this exact same boat, typing this on my 14" 10/16/16/1TB MBP. For the exact same money I could have the 16" and sacrifice 512GB of SSD... but man, that 16" is a pig in a backpack.
Always enjoy your content Luke! Max Tech just put out a similar video and a couple things stood out. The fans, heat exchange and speakers are much larger on the 16" and in their tests the 14" ran hotter with higher fan speeds and the battery on the 16" performed substantially better.
@@ProphetOfTruth_ Either it was the test differences or a copy of the 14" difference. Can't imagine any environmental differences would have made that significant a difference in results. Interestingly this video was 14" biased since Luke said that was what he was buying and the Max Tech video was 16" biased since that was the reviewers personal choice. Not saying that influenced either review, just an observation.
@@jimtipton8888 I don’t the tests were very different my best guess is incorrect sensors for Luke or setting a maximum temperature or something like that. I didn’t directly compare test results but if Max Tech had consistently higher results than maybe Luke unintentionally had some cap in place he was unaware of
I use a 2019 MBP 16 as my work machine and have kept my 2015 MBP 15 as my spare. I do UX/UI design, which involves a lot of vector-based graphics and light image editing. Honestly, most users will not outpace the 2015 MBP, so many novices, as well as pros, can get away with buying a quality second-hand MBP and enjoy great performance. Geekbench scores can look mighty impressive, but much of the time all that power goes untapped. If I was into video editing, I'd 100% have the latest and greatest MBP.
Gotta say Luke, I love your channel for the precision and thought you put into these test runs. Very well executed and very helpful. Thank you my dude!
Thank you for doing these comparisons! I have a high spec Intel i9 MBP and the fan noise on that under load is... awful. With these, it looks like I could not only have a great portable laptop, but also one that can be docked on my desk in my office and do things without my having to worry about thermals and fan noise. It's also nice to hear that when the 14" fans do come on, they're not all that loud as compared to the Intel. Now I'm looking forward to the M1 Max comparison :D
I really liked this video, it's not only focusing on performance but on what laptops are, battery and thermals are important part of laptop experience, and now people can make informed decision. get 14" to save 200$, fine with less battery, and ok with a bit of fan noise as long as performance is there. get 16", spend extra 200$, get almost silent computer, better battery (maybe significantly better) with same performance but slightly better speakers :)
Your tests have been great and very helpful. When I am ready to upgrade my 2018 MacBook Pro. I will probably go for the 14" and save weight. The battery life will still be much better than my Intel MacBook Pro.
Same - as someone who moves around my house a lot, I use my laptop on the floor, the couch, the bed, and a table.. 16" is simply too big for being moved around a lot. And too big for sitting in my lap
Could you please test the thermals and noise with them being in clamshell modes? Both in level and upright position? This will be cool to see for those who have it as a main PC with a external large screen attached to it.
I was waiting for the 14" for year but now that I looked at it in the Apple Store, I am disappointed how bulky and heavy (and ugly) it is. I am going to stick with my M1 Air.
the speaker difference between the 16 & 14 inch is massive when you have a feel for it... if i were using my laptop as my main speakers that would deffinetly be a dealbreaker for me. but the only thing i do with my laptop unplugged is watch Netflix so still considering the 14" base model. Im just waiting until my local electronics store gets those so i can have a look at the displays
Luke, could you please check tools which Max Tech used in their recent video? Their conclusions are completely different - they observed temperatures even above 105C(!) not below 60C
Thank you Luke fort this interesting test. For a comparison between Macbook M1and Macbook Pro M1 Pro, can you test several procedures for PHOTOGRAPHY : create a lot of massive PDS files from lightroom (from RAWs as big as possible, to full size PSD files) ? time for recording a PSD file with 10 layers or more in Photoshop ? time for applying a blur filter (or other) on a big file in photoshop ? In lightroom, put a lot of patch tool corrections on a raw file and then show the time to pass from one of these files to another, and to pass one of these "patched" files from edit (library) to development ? and other tests you can imagine. lf you do that, you will be probably the first and the only one on the techsphere
Great video’s Luke about the new MaBooks. I really appreciate your approach on these test. I know you are video orientated in your test. I’am a professional stills photographer and designer. So I work often with Bridge, multiple large Photoshop files and InDesign documents that contain multiple pages with images open at the same time. I’ve my email open and iTunes playing. Can you make a video where you test the difference in performance between a 16GB and 32GB model? More orientated in multitasking and where a 16GB RAM MacBook drops out compared to the same processor with 32GB of RAM? Personally I tried the M1 MacBook Pro a few months ago. I feared the lack of connection options and max of 16GB of RAM, but did not had the patience to wait for the M1 Pro or Max models. I returned it within the 2 weeks. What me made me do that was that the USB C ports did not had enough power so I could work tethered with my camera during a photoshoot or read and write on an USB thumb-drive. It all works well on my Intel MacBook Pro. Did you or do you know people who experienced something like this too with the new M1 MacBooks?
Best video so far of any 14 and 16 comparison videos. 'd like to see a battery test from 100% to 0% for both these machines. Real world testing. Exporting, Editing, Netflix, Web Browsing, ...
Btw Jerry Schulze has done the fan test between the 14in and 16in M1 Max. Results were the same. Performance kept up but fan noise increased on the 14in.
Fan noise comparison will be interesting when they are connected to an external display. Previous 16 was really bad with fan noise with an external 4K monitor
Luke, using TG Pro, internal temps seem to paint a slightly different picture. CPU temps go above 90 in these tests; just below 100 on the 14" - not matching desktop water cooled. Still excellent performance though.
TG Pro and all other temp monitoring apps are bugged rn. New temp sensors haven’t been figured out yet. Temps are gonna need to be retested when new software comes out to monitor it.
I'm just about to order the 16" pro max 32gb 2tb. (even though not available till May in UK) Can you please show how I transfer from old 2014 Macbook to the new one? Thanks for the videos but all the numbers mean nothing to me.
I compared 14 and 16 M1 Max yesterday if that helps.
I never thought Luke could suck it up to torture a MacBook like that. 🥲
Frankly, I thought I would be upgrading immediately, but the truth is that my current M1 13” MBP does everything I need to do, and I’m the bottleneck in my workflow. So I can’t justify upgrading at this point.
I’m blown away the M1 still can keep up with these 2 newer chips that’s just crazy awesome 🤯🤯🤯😎🤙🏻🍎💻🖥
The fan comparison was absolute fun, the 14” sounded like a calm rainy day and the intel 16” like a massive waterfall down on my roof.
Yeah hahah, like in the old days (until this summer in my case hahah) when the 15“ MacBook Pro retina from 2012-2015 used to turn into jet engines😂

I’m curious as to why Max Tech’s 14 inch performed sooooo much worse. He got his 14” well into 100 degrees..

for someone who mostly browses the web and watches video but wants the best Mac (display, ports, design), is the entry-level 14-inch Pro perfect? And is it worth it to go to the 16" for this? I have the 16-inch and I’m hesitating to downgrade to 14 because it might be overkill
I would love to know if the battery differs between the base model 14" and the top end 14"
I wonder: If you use Macs Fan Control to max out the fans - will the device be faster? It works (the program), I can confirm that from my 16“ but that would be an interesting test.
Nutzt du smc fan controll, oder welches Programm?
it will but fan noise is concerning, I be thinking the machine is throttling even though it might not be throttling hahaha
I doubt it- historically changing the fan speeds hasn't had an effect because Apple prioritized max performance over temperatures. In this case, because there is so much thermal headroom I suspect the fans would lead to lower temperatures, but have no effect on performance
@@lukemiani Unless you overclock if that were possible
it works for my base 13” m1 in gaming, i usually manually set them so the CPU stays below about 70-80°
This is the video I’ve been waiting for!! Thank you so much Luke-!!
Hey Luke,
the blanket part is purely genuinely genius.
I have a question, though. Did you try to put the two macbooks on your lap and feel how much heat they produce ?
Well, we know the answer for the Intel MBP: All the heat. So much that you probably won't be able to have children. But definitely a good question.
I've been so busy with tests I haven't had much time to genuinely use the new MacBooks! However, anecdotally the heat seems to be pretty similar
50-60C surely must feel cooler than the 80-90C of the intels
Apple has absolutely blown me away. This video alone demonstrates how sticking with Intel was setting us back for years.
Intel's stagnation was almost criminal, but with Apple's awesome M series and a resurgent AMD, they're definitely paying for it.
Apple has left IBM and now Intel.
years before this technology just wan't available
the biggest advantge intel chips gave us was runing windows for real and gettting access to tons of games we lost all that in apple silicone but we did gain so much more in return.
Not getting caught up. It’s definitely far quieter, the fan layout has been redone too to be quieter. It’s a substantial difference
The 14" will not even feels the monitors.
Its a dustcatcher now:-)
Definitely,same here
Yeah, there's the hype for these undeniably desirable new MacBooks, but frankly, the M1 stuff is so good for the needs of so many users, with astounding value for an Apple product.
This video is what I’ve been waiting for and provides me with added comfort in my decision of going with the 14” form factor. Thank you.
Exactly the tests I’ve wanted to see someone do - Great job and thanks Luke! Now I need to see if I want to change my 14” order…
Did you change it? I’m in the same boat. Ordered top spec 14”
I like the portability and spec on the 14 - I’ll probably stick to it!
gahhh - can't decide between the 14 or the 16 D: - I like the 14 for the portability.
I have never owned a 16" laptop, I'm on 13". How bad is holding 16" on your lap?
@@rafadydkiemmacha7543 Not that bad, but the 14" it' much better, better than hold a 13" too.

How’s the fan noise been and what model do you have?
MacBook Pro 14’ 32GB or 16’ 16GB RAM ?
Which one to go for ?
Fortunately that’s not the case, but there’s no harm in putting it to the test.
im really interested in the 32gb vs 16gb now that its unified memory, great video and coverage on these machines!

The temperature monitoring software you're using probably isn't showing the actual cpu cores temperature
I just tried a 14" convertible as my "on the go" notebook... its awesome... just 1,1kg or so.... especially with the touchscreen in tablet mode its really enjoyable, but in notebook mode, the 14" gets annoying, especially if you have more than 2 windows side by side open (or you just scale it down so you have to use a microscope)
With the 16".... the bigger screen makes it so much more usable, totally worth the bigger footprint and especially the "just" 0,5kg more!
@@MrDucatiV4 you mean you ended up with the base model ? since it has better battery?

This video is really interesting after watching Max Tech do almost identical comparisons. Their 14 inch consistently was hitting over 100 degrees under heavy load with very audible fans and their 16 inch never really got hotter than 90 degrees with fans rarely audible. Equal performance in the benchmarks but 14 was always much hotter and louder than the 16
@Joseph Richter no they weren’t. M1 pro in both computers in both videos
@Joseph Richter No, they are exactly the same specifications.
@@sshubam phew :))
Yep, I dont get those massive differences either. Who is right!?
That's not very helpful for us. It defeats the purpose of these reviews....
@@NicolaMastrandrea The fans spinning up like that for the 14" is not because of the programs used though. That's interesting
Lenovo 15" size: 36cm x 26cm
Macbook Pro M1 16" size: 35cm x24cm
I was astonished thinking I'd have to sacrifice space but my laptop is not that big, it can fit ANYWHERE easily, in any backpack or coffee shop table.. You folks who are undecided GO FOR 16" !!!
Its amazing how little the fans are used in these machines compared to their intel predecessors
Also: Notice how the 16" was named "MacBook's MacBook Pro" during the thermal test
My youtube video on this would go like this:
“Bigger laptop = bigger battery, screen and better cooling.”
“Small laptop = less battery, screen and slightly less better cooling.”
“Same performance..and thanks for watching my video on the new M1 chips”
I would really consider this, since I don’t really need powerful GPU, but 13 inch mbp has worse screen, touchbar, no MagSafe, etc…
Imagine how much battery life 16 inch with M1 could have….
Thank you.
Go for 16".. bigger screen to visualize all Logic Pro tracks.. and room for Lightroom best experience.. PS: it can fit in any normal backpack.
Max tech got 100C temps on the 14inch. Interesting.
And I've seen my own 14inch Pro get to >90c just the other day maxed out load doing some developer tasks, so saying a max cap of 60 is incorrect
Room temps factor into this also. Would be curious what the room temps were for basically all of the YT guys testing out these laptops.
Seems not a valid test until you connect 1 or 2 5k displays and watch the heat and memory pressure .
I value display size with my type of work (and eyes), so 14” was never in the equation. Definitely worth an extra $200 to me.
I’m definitely thinking the same thing my eyes be killing me sometimes on my 13” 2012 now so I’m definitely thinking of getting the 16”
Isn’t a crime to have a miniled display like this and use an external monitor?
That said, shouldn’t we go for the 16” to enjoy this almost “OLED” screen?
I'm glad I chose the 14 inch specd out and high performance mode seems like gimmick to me now lol 🤣
Is it worth it to get the M1 Max? I definitely want the 16” over the 14” but is it worth the $400 dollars for the 32-core? I want to produce music, do some light gaming and learn how to video edit.
My gf says it doesn’t
Nice
My wife says it doesn’t, her boyfriend told me it does.
The grip matters more than the size. Try holding a 11" OG white-bezeled MacBook Air compared to this 16" Alluminum Box.
@@samilahhoahoe5125 I hope you realize my comment is not dirty intended.
First comment.
The 14 inch is way lighter. The 16 is a really fat boi. I prefer the portably and it is not often you’ll be hitting the max on these machines. These stress tests are great but practical daily use doesn’t hit the max tolerances all the time.
Me seeing the 14 inch: that’s pretty loud
Me seeing the intel right after: oh never mind
Apple moving away from Intel has taken them at least 5 years forward. The macbooks of 2019 is a joke.
Started with the M1 Air last year and getting my 16" M1 Pro in a few days, can't wait!
wouldn't call the 2019s a joke , it'll take atleast months if not years till the m chips run all of the programs etc that the intel chips can
So basically, the 14" is gonna be louder than the 16" M1 Pro, that is to say audible instead of silent, both with sustained max performance, and worlds quieter than the Intel 16".
Blender workflow (not rendering) would be nice to see too, but I guess we need someone who knows how to use Blender to do that.
its wired because on max tech’s channels the 14 M1pro
got up to 106C
The MaxTech comparison showed the CPU getting to 106C in the 14” vs 80’s - low 90’s in the 16”. Were looking at different temp sensors?
Thanks for noting that out. The complete contradiction between the two videos made me doubt both - I’m not sure who to believe.
I was reading some comments elsewhere, and apparently TG Pro was just updated this week to measure the new chips properly. The previous version apparently showed lower temps, incorrectly.
@@t185bear It seems odd to me for a >100° temperature to be the correct one since most chips will throttle before they surpass 100°

Just canceled my order for 14". Thank you for the feedback about the fan noise, I can't work with something like that.

Just commented something similar, I’m very curious how almost 2 exact videos could yield results this different
Perhaps due to different size of files used to run the tests.
@@sindhusekar1 still, we’re talking about a 40°C difference ! My guess is the software used doesn’t calculate temperature the same way, which seems baffling to me but that’s the best I’be got
So Max Tech posted this in a comment on their vid
“we are using TG fan pro which was updated just before we shot the video and it's the first app to properly read the temps. All other apps we
tested as well as TG fan Pro prior to this update where barely pulling any sensors and the hottest sensors were from power modules and not CPU cores and those only shows up to like 50-60C. We also test with thermal cams and these laptops heat ip the chassis to 45C just like Intel macs which show CPU temps of up to 100C like M1 macs so there's no way these 10c M1 Pro chips that use 30W and heat chassis to 45C only hit 55-60C in the CPU.”

Thank you for this very informative video. Great work! To me, the most surprising thing was just how well the older M1 Mac in your test compared. It seems like Apple's original M1 machines remain very competitive, especially considering the cost differences. Thanks again.
What is the RAM frequency (MHz) of these Macs?
Just my 2¢.
I don’t need to be mobile so it’s the 16” for me. If the 14” had same battery performance, I’d would go with that.
I saw in max tech's video, the 14 inch temperature rise upto 100 degrees
Why not just use glasses for screen work?
I'm in this exact same boat, typing this on my 14" 10/16/16/1TB MBP. For the exact same money I could have the 16" and sacrifice 512GB of SSD... but man, that 16" is a pig in a backpack.
Agreed!
Always enjoy your content Luke! Max Tech just put out a similar video and a couple things stood out. The fans, heat exchange and speakers are much larger on the 16" and in their tests the 14" ran hotter with higher fan speeds and the battery on the 16" performed substantially better.
Just commented something similar, I’m very curious how almost 2 exact videos could yield results this different
@@ProphetOfTruth_ Either it was the test differences or a copy of the 14" difference. Can't imagine any environmental differences would have made that significant a difference in results.
Hi Luke! I want a comparison on the 16gb and 32gb of ram... I`ll be amazing teste how much apps can handle with no diference.
You forgot: get 14" to save space and weight if you regularly travel by air. If not for that, the 16" is the easy choice.
Size matters..no matter what they say size does matter. 😔
Max Tech's test showed the 14" going over 100*C!!!
2 extra inches makes a difference 😉
I would love to see the new MBPs perform in the new low power mode for the times when longevity is more important than performance.
The high shutter speed makes the video feel off.
That is not a Throttleing test .. Try Max out Both CPU and GPU at the same time with For 10/20 minutes.. Even the 16" Fan would Turbos at 4800rpm.
Best video so far of any 14 and 16 comparison videos. 'd like to see a battery test from 100% to 0% for both these machines. Real world testing. Exporting, Editing, Netflix, Web Browsing, ...
Max tech got 106 degrees on 14 inch while going through benchmarks. You are getting 50-60. That’s strange
I’m confused 🤔…
The TG fan pro app was showing temps exceeding 100c on the 14” M1 pro 🤔
Btw Jerry Schulze has done the fan test between the 14in and 16in M1 Max. Results were the same. Performance kept up but fan noise increased on the 14in.
@Luke Miani please update tg pro / cpu temperature app to the latest beta so that you can see the cpu core temps which is around 105°C
Space Gray made all the difference
Just ran all my workflow testing on the new M1 Max and OMG, I’m save soooooo much time and money… thanks Apple! This is the greatest Mac ever.
16 inch is quite huge to carry around! We miss our 15 inch size.
The new 16" is the same size as my 2013 15". Its a bit too big imo. I wish they had a 15.4" one in a smaller package.
POOPS & GIGGLES ON THE INTEL 😆😆😆
So strange, Max Tech found out the the 14" is very , very different in thermals and battery.
Check his video.
I'm just about to order the 16" pro max 32gb 2tb. (even though not available till May in UK) Can you please show how I transfer from old 2014 Macbook to the new one? Thanks for the videos but all the numbers mean nothing to me.
