KARINE de Souza, 32, has xeroderma pigmentosum, an extremely rare medical condition which means she cannot be exposed to direct sunlight. If she does go out in the sun, spots appear across her body, which develop into melanomas, a type of cancer. She explained: "When I expose myself to the sun it doesn’t happen in the moment, I don’t feel anything. However, in the future, the lesions appear and need to be removed because of cancer." She's had more than 200 surgeries to remove these skin lesions and believed that she would "never find love" because of her condition, but in 2018 she met her partner Edmilson, 27, on social media. "He came and he showed me that I could live a true love story", she said. Edmilson messaged Karine after seeing a post about her on Facebook and found "her life story really interesting, it caught my attention" he explained. The couple spent five months exchanging messages, and then Karine went to meet him in person in his hometown of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Eventually, Edmilson moved to Fortaleza to be with her, and the pair got married. Despite their happiness, the couple has faced judgement on social media, "we really suffer with prejudice. When we met and I started posting pictures of us together, it became viral in social media, because of my appearance" Karine said. "Because of the fact he’s a young man and pretty, that caught people's attention and they didn’t believe that he was with me because he really liked me." They have been trying for a baby since 2020, and are now pregnant with their first child together, a daughter named Zaia. However, they waited four months before announcing the news on social media over fears of a negative reaction from trolls.

There's proof that beauty comes from within. When I sit back and think about the petty little things I may complain about, and then see how this girl just gets up out of bed and lives life, it gives me much respect for her.
People can think or say what they want about them. This reminds me that as human beings we are more than just our bodies. We are our souls. I’ve felt self conscious about my body, the scars on my skin, but then I saw this and cried. So many things we worry about are truly meaningless in the grand scheme of things. Especially when you're sick- it isn't like you're partying it up or going on vacation. He could have found many a lonely rich widow if that was his goal. I've seen documentaries on people with that disease and they absolutely do not go outside during the day. The curtains have to be blackout and closed. Even riding in the car to appointments they have to stay under a blanket. It makes me so sad that she has never gotten the right care or maybe ignored the part about going into any sunlight. The other people I seen didn't have any sores but they also never went outside except at night. Thank God her baby won't be affected by it.

She said the drs didn’t know for years that she shouldn’t go in the Sun. I also wonder if since she’s in Brazil which isn’t the most first world country that they required her to go out to school since she would’ve been in school from the end of the 90’s to around 2010-13. You gotta remember rare diseases in some countries might not even be known. But also she could just still go out during daylight for whatever reason only she knows.

I feel this. I’m 53 and disabled. I thought I had found someone who would really love me and was a good match earlier this year. But they turned on me, attacked me, used some very private and vulnerable things I shared against me. It just destroyed me. I’ve lived through a lot of trauma, abuse, and trafficking in my life, so trusting was hard to begin with. This person completely destroyed that. I will never do that again. Before this, I had accepted that I would be alone forever, but was still open to the tiny chance of finding someone. I just had stopped looking, hoping, and waiting. Thanks to this person, I’m not open to that anymore. I will never let someone in like that, I will never trust anyone again.

I wish her the best as well, but there were several clips of her out in the daytime. One walking together wearing a sundress, another in a bathing suit on the beach and others. They were all worrysome to me. I've seen this condition before, but never with such severe sun damage. You're not supposed to have ANY sun exposure. If you do go out you're supposed to cover every bit of your skin... Long sleeves, gloves, scarves, hats and umbrellas. It's no wonder her condition is so incredibly severe. Maybe she enjoys the feeling of freedom by doing it, and that's her choice, but it's greatly hastening her ultimate demise from the melanoma and suffering endless painful surgeries having it removed in the meantime. I suppose at this point it no longer matters with as much damage as has already been done over the years of exposure. I'm happy for her that she's getting to experience a loveing relationship, pregnancy and being a mother. It's just sad that she won't get to see her daughter grow up.

As someone who grew up with an abusive mother. I can hand on heart say that the most important thing for a child is to have two loving parents. Nothing else matters.

I feel absolutely horrible for her, my heart breaks. But honestly has anyone else noticed all that BLACK MOLD in their apartment? That is really bad and very toxic for people, especially if her immune system is compromised, that's probably not a good idea for her/them to be in that apartment. Wow that just really made me lose it!! She's so brave, I have panic disorder and anxiety and I sit there and freak out, and this poor woman has cancer, and is handling it like a champ! I thought she wasn't taking medical advice by going outside, and that's why her skin looks so bad. But I looked up her story, and read that her condition is so serious, she has to wear SPF 100 inside the house! I wish them all the best as they start a family.

Well she was outside in the sun baring her skin for photos in this video, so it is clear that she indeed is not taking medical advice for her condition, and still going outside.
She's not being as careful as medical advice would dictate but it's her life to live. She's out in a sundress with no sleeves in the video and there are several pictures of her out in day with exposed skin and no sunglasses. Even in the most major sunblock cream this is not advised. The advice is to avoid going out in the day as much as possible and layer protection with clothing fully covering as much skin as possible and clothing with uv blocking ability, hats, sometimes even full uv face shields if going out in day. And uv blocking sunglasses because the eyes in this condition can get badly damaged too. They even recommended special films on windows for blocking uv and attention to indoor lighting as some artifical lighting also emits uv light. I was so curious about the condition I did some reading, I read of one case of sister and brother siblings. The older sister was diagnosed after bad sun reaction when she was very young. Current photo showed her aged 12 looking pretty normal except heavily freckled looking. The family did everything to protect from any sun exposure since diagnosis. Her little brother at 8 didn't have a mark on him visible in photo, they genetically screened him at birth and when found he had it too protected him rigorously from sun exposure right from birth. Unfortunately even with rigorous avoidance the disease can be likely to shorten life span from extremely elevated cancer risks, this increases though with more sun or uv exposures. I guess this lady just wants to live a life in a way that is fully living to her and whatever time she has is the time she has. I admire her confidence and joie de vivre and wish them every happiness together and with their new baby.
@@elizaj4431so if two siblings both developed this illness, I understand it is hereditary and then i’m really curious to know how can people be so egotistic, risking their kids’ suffer in such a tremendous way. Not the same as Down Syndrome etc. I believe people should live the life but this illness must literally be hell on earth for anyone having to deal with it.

@@stefrbt I was curious after reading your reply so I checked on the genetic inheritance information. It's a pretty rare disorder and both parents must have had the genetic mutation to pass the active condition on which is also rare that two people with it end up together. Still their children only have 25% risk of inheriting the active disorder. They have a 50% risk of being asymptomatic carriers as the parents were and 25% of being unaffected and not a carrier either. I was thinking how could they have a child who is neither a carrier or has the disease but I'd forgotten genes come in pairs. Both parents who were carriers had a gene pair that consisted of a normal gene and the abnormal so they could both pass the abnormal gene, or one the abnormal and other normal, or both the normal. So there was a 75% chance that their second child would be born with no active disorder. They also may have reasoned a healthy child who was a carrier might have more options in the future with medical advances. Yes, it sounds like quite a gamble. Or who knows maybe it was somehow an unintended pregnancy. It was easy too for me to think I wouldn't have made the gamble. But the desire for a healthy child of one's own is a very deep one for many people. I know women who are infertile and just broken by it. It's a hard situation. Their children were doing extremely well with the measures they take as of that report several years ago. I think they are being very private about their lives now. They had light blocking vehicles. The home was completely protective. They went out in evenings to swimming pools or basketcourts with friends. They looked fine and I'm sure they can't imagine life without them. But yes, it's hard and questions about the future must also have weighed on them.

Maybe she didn't have a choice to be more careful but from what I understand the skin doesn't get bad at all if you stay out of the sun and uv. If you stay in the dark and use protection on screen device's you're pretty much g. You can even go outside at night while wearing protective clothing and taking more precautions. People with this condition get cancer/lesions and have to have skin, lips and such removed as a result because *SOME* willingly aren't too careful for their condition

Yea, so I really don't wish to judge but I was confused about them showing her outside in a sleeveless dress during the daytime when the sun is the cause of her skin issue. But I don't know really anything about the disease
We don't have the full picture, but it definitely appears that she doesn't take as much care coving up as she should. Maybe she didn't take it seriously until it was to late and the damage was done. She did say that the lesions don't appear immediately.

Just to clarify,I don’t know any deep details about her disease BUT I’m also from Brazil and the place where she lives is HOT AF and also, it’s a poor state so national healthcare there is not as good as it’s in other states. I believe,from what I read,she did not know much about what she has and how terrible sunlight is for her :( it’s easy to judge and say she has not been very careful when you have the right diagnosis and a world of information available in front of you. Now,think about knowing about not being sure about your condition 29 years ago in a poor and extremely hot place in Brazil? Bless her heart!

These are two beautiful people who truly love one another. I'm so happy that Edmilson doesn't care about how hateful people feel about his relationship with Karine. He loves her in spite of her condition and it's crazy how ignorant people don't want to believe that something like this can actually happen because of Karine 's outward appearance. This just goes to show that love doesn't judge when you truly love someone. Who will accept you for who you are. Satan is using their vessels to hurt people and some don't even realize it. Others are just not mature, don't know or believe in Christ, some are envious and jealous because *they* want this kind of unconditional love, happiness, and joy for themselves and they may feel like they're somehow more deserving because they don't have to suffer such a painful, long term condition and have no idea what she goes through - they also have no idea what it means to have a beautiful soul like Karina that attracts people to her. If there's no substance, interest will inevitably be lost - doesn't matter they are out who they think they are. @@kuroshindo4413 I was kind of getting the idea she meant while she was carrying the baby but as far as long term goes, that I'm not sure about. I'm sure the doctors must have told her if she has a good chance of passing that gene along to the baby or not.
@@johnnym4400 I just checked online, the baby should get ond defective gene that causes the "xenoderma pigmentosa" from the mother and ALSO one from the father to get the same disease. So if his genes are "healthy" maybe the baby won't get it. Anyway I'm NOT a doctor and I think that a more direct question about this specific topic could have been asked to them in the video.

It makes me so happy to see that she has found love, despite being different from the “normal world” when in actuality, no one of us is not. And we all suffer from different things, sometimes we are able to hide them from others, but we are all human, and struggle in the same battles, if you are. Vourenable ( you see how I can’t spell that at 41 years old?!) and realize the truth. This is an awesome video. Thank you for sharing. Especially for our kids who can be raised in a world of hate, yet should be the most expecting of all the people in his world.

Okay so I read online that in order to inherit the this condition both parents must carry the gene. So if he doesn't have the gene the baby will not inherit this condition. Also, I don't know her whole story but it's really sad that she could of prevented looking like that if she had taken more precautions. I researched people with their condition and they look no where near as bad as she does.

I'm very happy for the love these two have, but I'm also very concerned for the baby. I'm a mother of 3: 1 adopted and 2 biological children. But in this situation I would have only adopted children because my heart would break if I had to see my child suffer and go through the surgeries and pain I had. May God spare this little girl from this disease, and give her a normal life.
