    A FAMILY in North Sumatra, Indonesia, are living with a rare condition that causes their faces to change shape. Out of the six children of the Manurung family, four of them are living with an undiagnosed and incredibly rare facial condition. Suyra told Truly: “The fact is, our faces they have changed shape but we accept it and just live with it. In my opinion, growing up with this condition made me feel inferior. But now, I don’t feel like that anymore.” Despite many suggesting the family had been cursed, they have realised their condition must be genetic, as their father is also affected. The family are yet to visit a doctor for any diagnosis and, due to the unusual nature of their looks, they have had to get used to people reacting negatively to their appearance.

      It explicitly states, "an undiagnosed medical condition" poke around on Google. One of the first people woth a similar condition was a beautiful woman who was a nurse. Her face began growing at a rapid rate and she had to work for a traveling carnival because of her appearance. Facial bones grow for your entire life. This rapid rate of growth is, as the family notes, abnormal.

      Actually, this might be how we humans are supposed to look without the neoteny effect. Neoteny is an evolved feature where adults retain some features of a younger stage. It's one of the easiest ways for a species to adapt, and many species are neotenic. Humans are long known to be neotenic: out faces and skulls are identical to that of a baby ape. So, maybe this family is the case where the neotenic trigger doesn't work, and their heads develop as a healthy early human would. (Please don't read "early human" to mean something underdeveloped or primitive; nature is not an RPG.)

    • @MarysiaKosowski
      @MarysiaKosowski 2 месяца назад +9

      @@soevilcat This was fascinating information that I didn't know about re. human evolution. I'm off to look up neoteny and how humans evolved these characteristics. :) Post looking it up: I agree in general with your comment that the family's genetic abnormality reflects what humans may have looked like without the neoteny effect. However, Treacher Collins Syndrome (what they have) can also give people breathing, vision, and hearing problems, so it's just not optimal or a "healthy" way for human skulls to develop (though it seems as if these particular individuals don't necessarily suffer from those health complications).

      @@MarysiaKosowskiyeah yeah if the condition doesn’t affect their quality of life then it’s not that big a deal and really does not matter. They say it doesn’t, that its mostly aesthetic and tbh aesthetics are subjective and influenced by our environment so if they’re got experiencing any health issues from this then it’s not really a problem except other people reacting negatively to it (which isn’t THEIR problem it’s the people’s)

I think it would be great if they could get routine medical care, though, because I imagine whatever it is might impact things like eye health or sinus function over time. Knowing exactly what it is could help predict certain concerns or who knows- there could a treatment option to at least stabilize stuff so they aren't dealing with constant changes. What I love is that their village they live in they have peace and acceptance. Ppl adjust and become comfortable around ppl that are different once the initial surprise wares off. It’s human nature to stare at first when taken by surprise to someone who either looks very different or acts differently then everyone else. I say this bc of our son stands out wherever we go. Usually they hear us coming bc of his loud vocal stims. He looks, sounds and acts differently then our norm in society. But, he is accepted at his middle school and where we go to church. He doesn’t turn heads with ppl that have become accustomed to this person that is hard to not notice. It’s almost like ppl get desensitized to him and see him as non threatening. But, going into new public places he is stared at and alarms young children. The parents are often embarrassed and shushed their children. We just smile and keep going. I’m sad that this family experiences ridicule and mocking. Clearly their spirit isn’t broken and have a beautiful bond of love and support. Smart family to be unashamed and teach us all about being comfortable around all kinds of ppl. Xo

    I'm sure many doctors and biologists would be interested in studying their condition. It must be a dominant mutation in a gene that controls collagen production or bone structure or something similar. Maybe something that is already known in the literature. It's a shame they don't go to check it out.
    The dad must be heterozygous (has one mutated and one normal gene) and the one daughter was lucky to get his normal gene (and of course the normal gene also from her mother).
    As others have mentioned, it would be interesting to see photos of them at younger age, since they all said that their faces changed. Also, are there any other changes or just their head/face area? The video should have provided more information.
    They seem happy, and say they are healthy and it hasn't affected their life, but surely they will find it difficult to find partners, and that is a major effect on their lives (although the father obviously managed to find a partner).
