CT-9877 Yeah that's true, how else would he have been able to teleport to Xen without being Mauled by every Xen creature. Also, it's coincidental how Gordon gets teleported right back to the test chamber. Yeah G-Man made sure Gordon survived. (Yes I realize it was a joke but it makes a shit ton of sense)
I imagine the reason they talk for so long is to give you the chance to intervene. The lack of any follow-up dialogue tells me the game would reload a save if you didn't kill them in time.
Was looking for this comment. Thanks. This cut content makes a lot more sense now. Was trying to figure out what Gearbox's intentions were with killing Gordon.

I hated it when Gordon would use more than 100% of his power in that level and glitch me under the level.

Maybe that marine knew Freeman since they were kids? Like, Freeman graduated in Univercity with good grades while the marine guy failed and had to join military. When he learned that Freeman is working in Black Mesa he immediatly enlisted in H.E.C.U to kill him. Well, he tried

Fun fact: Gordan Freeman was apparently going to have his first, and only line of dialogue in this scene. shortly before the soldier shoots him, Gordan was to regain consiousness, and utter the words: "Need a throat lozenge?" Sadly this was cut from the final version of the game.

I want someone to make an HL2 mod where Gordon hunts down Barney because he still owes him that damn beer.
This is how the backstory would go.
Long after the events of Half Life 2, HL2 Episode 1, and HL2 Episode 2, Gordon would be thirsty for a beer. He would then remember that Barney has owed him one. Many, many times. But has never given him one. Enraged by this, Gordon went out to hunt Barney.
I imagine the scene when you rescue Freeman going like this:
Dr. Cross: "We saved Dr. Freeman!"
Dr. Colette: "What now?"
Dr. Cross: "Let's just leave him sleeping in the trash compactor. He needs a rest after all he went through. I'm sure nothing will go wrong."
We have assured the Administrator that nothing will go wrong.

Plot twist: trash compactor was turned off
Might have been the reason why it was cut. Really, it doesn't make much sense at all no matter how it plays out. If you shoot them and save Freeman why does the compactor still turn on? Were the players supposed to be in a vent or something where they could have a line of sight to be able to shoot the soldiers but not switch the compactor off? If this was really "canon" how come you see no blood or signs of the dead soldiers when you're here in HL1? (of course retcons, etc.) (And to a lesser extent why do they bother shooting Gordon when the trash compactor will still kill him.)
I imagine all these questions was why it was cut, there was no way to really make it work while still making sense from the player's POV in HL1.
And this is a nitpick but I don't like the voices. In HL1 the marines who drag you away have a radio-static filter on their voices but these guys sound completely different, closer to the grunts in Opposing Force, actually.

Dude could survive a rocket to the face, but because it's a cutscene/save this guy thing, he dies from a bullet into his metal suit that has something to lessen the damage of things like bullets
Valve is not that stupid to make nonsense things like this they always make the best games, if gordon was awaken he would be kicking those soldiers asses so i mean you can just shoot someone when he or she is sleeping makes sense right? We dont know why gordon wakes up with low hp. Maybe its because of the hit he got to his head or that one shot or maybe because of he fought black ops and then he was captured

Legends say that the soldier is 50 and is now roaming the earth, with Freeman's ponytail in a heart shaped locket. The combine and resistance could never kill him because the ponytail makes him a sellout and they don't want to look at him or even disgrace the weapons with his blood

The soldiers wanting to shoot him and dump the corpse in the trash compactor but being stopped by a third party at the last minute makes so much more sense than the soldiers dropping his unconscious but still alive body in the trash compactor.
But it brings up the question of why he ends up in the trash compactor anyways.

Knowing how much damage that gun does - Freeman probably got hit -5 hp from the bullet, and like... -20 hp from the fall damage. Big whoop. He's totally fine xD

SuperJayXD Not slightly. 2/3 of damage it absorbs. And that depends on the mark of the suit. Mark IV (HL1) absorbs 2/3 and also reduces the damage of an attack by about 2/5. Mark V (HL2) absorbs 4/5 of the damage, but doesn't decrease the damage of the attack itself.
Also I didn't say the suit protects you from fall damage. I'm saying that even with all that known - his chance of dying from that is pretty slim.

SuperJayXD I think that's nitpicking now. The Black Ops scenario depends on the player, you can take 0 damage. This scene however is forced, so no player choice, thus -25 hp (around).

As in Black Mesa source when you escape the trash compactor you can find a dead soldier with no real explanation to his death in the control room

The most obvious reason I’d say for this being cut is the decision for Decay’s end to be simultaneous with Blue Shift’s end, in which you witness Gordon being dragged down the hallway. This wouldn’t have fit anywhere but as a mission past the end of the campaign
Still would fill in a plot hole that instead of the marines being stupid they just were stopped before they could kill freeman, I personally think that this bit is cannon

Well I think this mission was intended to happen later than the Decay conclusion we got, since Decay doesn't so much end as just stop.
They are barely half way through the Incident when they roll credits and we get no closure for Gina, Colette or Keller's fate. What's more they are all still in the facility and we know that things aren't going to get any better. It makes sense that they'd have continued to act to try and contain the damage, especially once it became clear that the portal wasn't closing.
So while this scene has to be later than the canon ending of Decay, it does make sense as something they could have done after Decay ended.
No it happens similatenously with Barney going back to Earth after leaving Xen

I think this was a scenario in a mission where Cross and Green would shoot the grunts, letting Gordon simply fall into the trash compactor while still alive, thus saving him.
This animation would probably play if Cross and Green did nothing.

Did you play black ops 3 ? Because it's black ops 3 plot, you get beated down by a robot in the first mission, you get inconcious, the robot continiou to beat you down, and the rest of the game you play is just what your character brain put up while he is dying.

So that's why HL3 is taking so damn long. It's never going to happen because HL2 was just hallucinated by Gordon during the last fleeting moments of his consciousness.

The frustrating part is just how awesome all four perspectives of the events at Black Mesa are, but Valve has pretty much abandoned this kind of story telling. Why they didn't make Episode 1&2 about characters equally as important as Gordon I'll never know.

Gamer_X Right? Wouldn't be hard to have a resistance member trying out a HUD made by one of the scientists, since they legit made the HEV suits. Would explain the ammo counter and health tracking, but have no suit power. Then you can get some scrap-made armor for better bullet resistance.
***** I get your point, but I still enjoyed both of them. At the very least, Half Life and the two expansions layed the smackdown on gaming design, back in the day. Would be nice if the formulae was picked up by others and used.

people talking about how Gordon would've survived that scene when:
1. it's a deleted scene, so is probably not canon
2. the mission was probably about saving Gordon and this was just a "Mission Failed/Game Over" cutscene, making his death not canon again.

I like how the comment section is raging about this as if it was canon. The wiki page linked in the description even says that Freeman's execution only occured, if the player failed to intervene in time. Considering that it's cut content and all, we're basically viewing a would-be-game-over that never made it. And yet, we have people who try to say Gordon got better in something that's technically not canon. :P
Yeah, the women shot the soldiers before they shot Freeman. So he still fell in, just minus one bullet.
Makes sense how long the dialogue goes on for, now. Gives enough time to kill them before Freeman dies.
Also, Gordon would probably take 25hp damage from the entire thing, so he wouldn’t have died either way.
I mean, let's just say it's _"pseudo canon",_ since realistically, the soldiers probably would have just killed Freeman and then disposed of the body in the trash compactor, which could also be inferred from their conversation while they're dragging Freeman's unconscious body. Therefore, it would make sense for his execution to stopped by a third party- Gina Cross and Collette Green, and have Freeman just be dropped into the trash compactor still alive and have him later escape into residue processing.
the non canon is better still, because saving freeman right before he gets killed so he is dropped alive makes more sense than the marines just leaving him alive without even checking if he was trying to escape

The twisted irony is that bullet is likely why he survived. The HEV applies an adrenaline shot upon taking damage, which would have woke him up.
If they had just dropped him in, he probably would have remained comatose and died to the compactor. Remember, he was awake for 3 days straight.
This was going to become the new hunt down the freeman.

Dun Dun Dun! Bill Shot Freeman, then went on to be 'Left 4 Dead' in a Zombie Apocalypse, while actually being alive, and escaped the Combine, until going undercover in Ravenholme, where he assisted the very man he was supposed to kill back in Black Mesa. After he escaped Ravenholme, he proceeded to put on his old Vet gear, and lead a rebellion I'm North America after getting back to that continent.

I always wondered why the ending of the last mission doesn't actually see Gina and Collete escaping the facility, it just kinda... ends.
The fact that there were 3 missions cut from the game explains that pretty well...

I assume that the playable section would have been the two characters shooting the soldiers, but Gordon would fall in anyway and the hatch would close leaving him trapped. Then the compactor would automatically start up and the two characters would have no control.

Of course, it is seen that Freeman's wound isn't fatal, allowing him to later regain consciousness, and slaughter the buddies of the HECU Personnel for more reasons than just posing a threat to him, and everyone around him.
(Hint: For lazily shooting him in the back, and dumping his body into a trash compactor, despite them telling one another to check if he were really dead before toggling the compactor.)

Technically, nothing is bulletproof, but there are things that are bullet-resistant. From what I remember, the HEV Suit generates a shield that lessens the damage or impact caused by radiation, electrical shock, kinetic impact, and just about everything that can hurt you in Half-Life.

To be fair those two probably didn't want to do it around any other marines either. They're defying orders by taking him alive and not bringing him for questioning, that's why they worry about anyone finding the body

I was so happy when I read on Combine OverWiki about the cut mission of Gina and Colette rescuing Gordon. I always wondered why Gordon wasn't killed before being abandoned. I figured the soldiers must have been killed before they could kill him, but by who, and why the heck weren't their bodies there? This answers at least some of that, and that made me so happy.

It may have not been his death, because he was only shot in back, not head, and he was wearing some pretty strong hev armor.
I'm pretty sure that in the level you would have shot the soldiers, causing them to drop freeman into the trash compactor. With that animation being if you failed.
Guessing the idea behind this scene was to cover up the Bond Villain Stupidity plot hole of the marines failing to do this in the first place during that chapter.
They were totally going to do it, but Gina and Collette saved the day and Gordon fell through relatively unharmed.

There was most definitely a ponytail in the half life 'demo' (man did i play that thing to death, on a clunky old 486 no less.) When I finally got my hands on the retail version one of the first things I did was use the "thirdperson" command to look at the character model - no ponytail. Now, I didn't get to play the game until well over a year after its release so it could have been removed in a patch I installed. Man, remember patches? An actual physical file you could keep in case the next one broke whatever you were using and you had to roll back your install?
