- After 2 months on the FKG dock, it was a dream to not only get off but go sailing with our new rigging and parasail. She is a beaut! But, much work had to be done to get to the point of sailing. New blocks had to be installed, two new winches, a new flip flop block on the mast, and new lines and soft shackles. In this video, you will see the installation of the rigging, some winch servicing demonstration, and finally, the sailing of the parasail. The wind gusts were over 20-25 knots so we didn’t want to push the sail too much. It took a couple of hours battling the wind to get the sock around the sail in the first place. But, it was a beautiful, sunny day so we were happy campers.
We bought this sail and invested in all the rigging because our dream is to circumnavigate the globe. It was an expensive endeavor, but we are told that this sail will quickly become our favorite to use. We have a slim sail inventory in the first place. We look forward to testing her out in calmer winds.
We are so thankful for the FKG rigging team who prepared the boat, for Wouter especially who was involved in all aspects of the process, and for him and Kelsey coming out on the boat to set up the sail and test it out. FKG is a special place and we are thankful for their part in making s/v Blown Away a blue water sailing vessel!
NEW TO OUR CHANNEL?
We are Eileen and Brown Councill. Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our NEW life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we have very little sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia.
So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too!
As a viewer, we consider you to be part of our family and look forward to getting to know you. Don't hesitate to comment on our videos and ask questions. We will do our best to answer every correspondence! All we ask is that you have patience with us as we work really hard to improve our camera/video techniques and ability to tell a story. Hopefully, you will be as BLOWN AWAY from watching, as we are in experiencing and producing our adventures!

She is gorgeous!!!!
Thanks, Bev!!
Wow, such a huge learning curve for everything!!!
Thanks for watching. I don’t know how you keep up with everyone. My goodness. Do you ever sleep? Ha! The learning curve is ridiculous!!
Absolutely amazing and so exciting!!
Thank you so much!!
How beautiful it is ! Hao Piao Liang !
Thank you, Grace!! happy easter!!
Love it, Dad!
Thanks for watching, Marston?!
What a beauty! Happy sailing y’all can’t wait to see ya out on the water!
Thanks, Jan! We are so excited to have you out here with us too!!
1. She is stunning! Watching her open up and do her job was literally jaw-dropping and the entire process is fascinating. 2. I've been known to be dead-weight so I'm thinking I might be able to handle that part. 3. It's insanely technical - no wonder you need extra hands (dead-weight). Whoever is with you will be thrilled you two know exactly what to do.
Ha ha. Thanks!! We have not put her up with just the two of us. We need more hands the first couple of times!! Lol. Thanks for your confidence.
Wonderful video, that’s the first video I watched since I can access RUclips! You know that our school is teaching some student sailing, so I think this video is also useful for them! Also watch your video is a good way to relax for A2 students like me!
Hey!! It’s so great to hear from you Gavin!! Thanks for your comment and watching our video!! We are glad you are following us. We miss you all. Yes, it’s a great way for you to relax as an A2 student...just don’t get caught during night prep ha ha! We hope you are well and your acceptances are many!!
WOW. That is one amazing sail. Made me think of my days on my Sunfish at Lake Wawasee in Ohio. Haha but that’s where my mind went. Good times. Good friends. Same experience as you but I was on a dingy.
Sail that bad boy here to Pittsburgh and I can be “dead weight”. Keep living the dream
Thank you so much, Leah! We are SO glad that you enjoyed it. A sunfish is JUST like our boat...just a lot smaller so doesn't surprise me that your mind went there! ;) Would LOVE to come through to the burgh to have you join as dead weight!! HA! Thanks for your encouragement!
After what seemed like a slow start you guys seem to be flying!! So many things done/learned! Congrats
ha ha...some days flying, some days crawling, some days being dragged backwards!! LOL. We are always learning though!
Looks like an amazing sail. Beautiful colors. You will look very hi tech with that flying in front of you. I look forward to seeing how it performs in winds of and above 10-15.
We hope to fly it with you when you are on board!! It's ok to 20-25 knots but then it gets dicey!!
It'll be great to get the sail in drone footage too!! ;)
😀👍👏👏👏
Thank you!
What was the rating on the turning blocks for the sheets? I thought I heard you say only 200KG?
2300kg. Def not 200kg...they would have broken a long time ago! ;) Thanks for your question.
Hi. Did you buy the sail in St. Maarten? I have a Beneteau, and considering buying a parasail. Has it been useful in the trade winds?
We bought it in November 2020 before we took possession of our boat in St. Lucia and were still in Miami and had it shipped to Sint Maarten where we had planned to do a lot of work. It’s been VERY useful for downwind sailing as well as beam to beam especially because it can handle higher winds than a traditional spinnaker due to its horizontal vent. Send us your boat model # and email address to sailingblownaway@gmail.com and we’ll send you specifications and pricing from the factory. 😎
That sail is awesome. Why do para sailors have the hole at the top?
Thanks! We love it. It’s to dump wind. It can handle a lot more than a sail that doesn’t allow wind dumping.
@@SailingBlownAway It also helps it stay ‘inflated’ in very light gusty air since the wing portion doesn’t need as much wind to stay up it holds the main sail open.
@@terry1jf Interesting concept. It will be great to see how it performs under a variety of conditions. Do you have one yourself or have you flown one?
@@jeffcalenberg4410 I have one but haven’t sailed the boat since we got it because of covid
@@terry1jf Thanks for this response. We are learning from alll of you about our own sail! :)
Good mic with a dead cat would add a lot to your content.
what does the aerofoil part actually do?
Thank you! When we get to the US we will look into it. At the moment, the GO pro is our go to as we are treading water with all that encompass boat life. I know sound is critical so we will try to improve it. The open area (is that what you are referring to?) dumps air when we get too much. That’s the advantage.
You could have achieved greater downwind speed if you would have flown John Candy’s pants at the top of the mast...everyone knows this...sailing 101😎
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
