    the best thing about this channel is that you use 95% of what you make for later projects. you dont just make things and them throw them in a shed

      i was thinking the same, every new project he use the old projects he made. one day his shop will be all made by hand!

      If you enjoy watching homemade tools being made google celso mascarenhas. He builds his own lathe, milling machine, his own jointer, steady rest, dividing head, machinist vise and much more plus the guy has metal hands on top of it. Trust me it's very entertaining. I personally think he is the best for homemade tools.

    Your welding skills have improved a lot since you've started your channel. I would like to see you weld thin stuff, like inox sheets to cover a panel or a car body panel, that would be a bigger challenge then welding thick metal. Thumbs up to your channel.

    Very nice job, Extreme. Im going to make one similar to that for my sb 10K, except im going to use an old harmonic balancer
    from a chevy 350 engine for the hollow top piece. Made one using that for another lathe once and it worked out great.

    Wicked! But strange, I actually just finished a fairly intricate MOD/Make-over of a cheapo 3" steady rest just the day before I came across this vid!! Better late than never. And yes, Sooo inspirational! As I saw someone had remarked.
    I picked up my cheap thing of a rest on eBay for something like $60. Painfully inadequate upon arrival, but expected as much since a series of mods was the plan from the get-go. Most pertinent of the MODs executed being **#1** The installation of bearings within the tips of the fingers. But none of that side saddle hog wash. By going with the option of material removal to have the bears axles mounted sandwich style, in line load stability is maintained from the adjustment screw to the channel bolt through the bearing tip & having them embedded in the fingers, with about 2mm of bearing casing exposed at the point of contact. This allows for great debries protection, having the rectangular shaped fingers allowed for easy through bolt/mini screw mounting and also, when in action, gives 2 sided shielding to the bearings rotational points, preventing jamming or damage from chips and debris. Not that such issues are hugely common, but it is always nice to be able to incorporate additional component protection at no additional cost. Ended up having shielding of the finger bearing axles, as well as minimizing exposure of the bearing side walls almost entirely. Less than 0.5mm gap between the bearings and their mounting points which are perfectly perpendicular. (this is my only suggestion for potential improvement, for the protection benefit and just because it was so easy to incorporate ones part of the spec design.)
    (One question and i wrap it up)
    I can't believe anyone of sound mechanical mind would feel comfortable implementing a steady rest, to live spinning metal, with solid metal ended fingers to guide the spinning part by way of metal on metal contact, multiplied by three!
    Is such an approach somehow less idiotic than I am perceiving it to be? Or should those steady rests just straight-up be avoided? (...keeping the blinders on when steady rest shopping, not to be removed until finding a steady rest with some type of design to allow low friction contact at the business ends of the fingers).
    Comments or explanations welcome....

    Very impressed with anyone who can make an additional tool part like this in ordar to make the final product needed. Forgive a naive ignorant question - how do you ensure the new guide piece is accurately aligned to the center point of the lathe? Or does it djust automatically happen?

    • @airgunningyup
      @airgunningyup 7 лет назад +1

      you use a dial indicator , and spin it.,. when its perfectly aligned , the dial wont move anymore.. Usually, with a piece that long , you need to indicate in several places.
