I have seen a few guys do that in the past when I was a mechanic. One eyed Joe was probably the worst, fast follower was cut-throat Tim. Sammy Scarface was also known for not using a guard. We had also Walter "WHAT", you could probably guess what he did not use. Coughing Carl and Bleeding fingers Fred were also couple of guys I knew.

I know many people who do not use the shields. Personal preference. Usually people who have seen a low budget cut-off disc explode near them prefer the shield. I have driven a few who had not an experience with exploding disc, to ophtamologyst to remove metal shavins from eyes, but that process does not scare them enough to change habits.

I am planning one that should be similar.. will likely have a dedicated motor for it though as well as a larger actual lathe style chuck... i feel like that drill chuck limits you considering the accuracy and time you put into it. I suppose you could make an adapter to go from drill to lathe or make it interchangeable. My hold up is im collecting leftover iron from others projects. It used to be easy to get plenty but nobody builds any thing anymore and the ones who do don't want to get rid of anything. I just know i can build if rock bottom price if i can scavenge enough materials. I would primarily have to buy pillow bearings and the chuck, as well as some all thread. I really like the simplicity of your design though. Good job!

Using a basic lathe for a simple project is a great idea, but I’m curious why you didn’t opt for a proper lathe chuck, as they’re quite affordable.

if I understood correctly we are limited to the diameter accepted by the drill chuck otherwise we must first machine a shank of the accepted diameter on a steel round of greater diameter, on a metal lathe.. too bad not to have fitted a real three or four jaw chuck

I really like this build, but I would make a few little changes. Instead of welding the drill mount to the frame, I would have made it attach via slots. Then you could use different sized sprockets on the drill to give you different spindle speeds. Sure, a variable speed drill will give you a range of speeds, but drills lose torque when the speed is electronically reduced, where gearing increases the maximum torque. I would also not have welded the chuck to the shaft, rather I would have welded a taper to the shaft, giving the flexibility of using different sized chucks, larger ones for say aluminium turning. I have been trying to get my head around making an X-Y slider to use with my mag drill for precision step-and-repeat drilling of holes in a precision grid. I am going to adopt your design for this. The purpose is so that I can make a fixture welding table top from 200 mm wide steel plates precisely aligned and mounted on a frame. Good work, you have many good ideas.
