Measure twice cut one's and take your time. You'll be sooooo glad you did. I made a living out of porting and building engines. And my family business was plumbing. Don't sale yourself short.

Im in the process of building a CNC machine so it was really cool to see that joystick 🕹️ control you added. Where can one of those be purchased? In Iran we can find scrap metals and it is so cheap.
I didn't use encoder just tow drive command from one joystick to turn left and right but sometimes it makes mistake and the Chuck Motore slows down and threads damaged.
Maybe a gear box or a bigger Electromotor or an encoder can solve this problem.

This is talent way when you synchronize speed by VFD on 2 different motors. Can get ratio number for 2 pitch and you used once switch for on-off two VFD? The big problem is when motor start need time to stable motor torque and if low speed mean the torque also will reduce need high power on motor can balance

There is a reason lathes are cast and not welded. Very curious to see what level of accuracy this will be able to hold.
