GORILLA CONSERVATION - one of the easiest things you can do to help gorillas is to recycle your cell phone or other hand held electronic device. Recycling electronics helps support gorilla conservation programs. Cell phones and other electronics contain a mineral called coltan (it is short for columbite-tantalite). Coltan is mined in areas where gorillas live. Recycling cell phones reduces the demand for coltan, which helps protect these native habitats.
Some estimates report gorilla populations have declined 25% in the past 20-25 years.

Kayembe was the first zoo born gorilla at the Cleveland Zoo.
Kunda is the second baby born in Cleveland in less then 2 years.
Jameela is the first baby gorilla born via c-section at the Fort Worth Zoo.
The Conservation status of the Western Lowland gorilla is “Critically Endangered”.

Freddie is just THE ultimate Mom. Protecting Jamee, guiding and correcting Kayembe, I just love her. She’s so funny eyeing Nneka, making sure she doesn’t mess with her kids. Awesome and thanks Larry for bringing us all the joy.
I like the way she handled the toddler when he wanted to come get the baby. She could of been real harsh, but I’m sure in her wisdom the way she handled was to say “NOT NOW,” but didn’t want to discourage him from ever forming a bond with the baby when he’s old enough.

I just love the way she plays with Kayembe, rolls around with him all the while she has a foot on Jameela giving her just a little freedom. Much different mothering style than Kebi.

I think Kayembe needs a toy...a ball or some hard rubber toy,
to keep his mind off his baby sister until she's ready for rough and tumble.
Young gorillas have balls at The Kyoto Zoo in Japan...and blankets which they seem to love.
The small gorillas use the balls as pillows or play with them.
The older gorillas carry their blankets around and spread them on the ground for naps.
The gorillas also learn numbers on tablets at The Kyoto Zoo.
I know, I know...children's books for them is just too much to ask for...But I honestly believe they need balls and blankets.
It would be like:
"Well, my sister has more of mom. But I have a TOY!" "Hey! Look at meeee!"

@@pattymelt-go3fv 💯 Kintaro at Kyoto loves his play balls and all the gorillas in Kyoto love the blankets (at least the three males do-not Mama Genki the female though- she doesn’t seem to care for the blankets). A ball would be wonderful for Kayembe. Kintaro carries his everywhere. He’s had it for a long time now too you can tell he really loves it. 🦍♥️

Kayembe is being a typical 2 year old. When a new baby comes home and they aren't the center of attention anymore. Plus horror of horrors it's a girl. Lol, love this Thank you Larry. I just wish Nneka would step up as a Mom. I think that's why she gave her the side eye.
If only he had a a boy around his age...but instead he has 2 little sisters.

When you see Jabali and Ringo from the Taipei zoo, run around and play all day, then you can appreciate how bored little Kayembe is having no playmate. Big dad doesn't play with him. If Kayembe can just hang on, soon he'll have Kunda and Jameela as play pals. Thanks for the video and keeping us up to date! 😊

@@Pray925 Yes Freddie had 7 children! She is the sister to a beloved favorite female gorilla that I follow (Kokamo) that lives at San Diego Zoo Safari Park, so I have followed Freddie and her siblings for many years now. The following are Freddie's children:

Nia - Columbus Zoo
Acacia - Columbia Riverbanks Zoo
Moka - Pittsburgh Zoo
Alice - Little Rock Zoo
Unnamed - deceased
Technically now, she has raised 9 babies in total. She is a blessing to the zoo, Kayembe and Jameela. What a testament to Freddie's beautiful soul, and strong admirable maternal instincts 😀.

Kayembe is stealing my ❤. He’s so cute and he seems to be a little gentler with Jameela the three times he grabbed her. Kunda is walking further away from Kebi, she’s spreading her wings. I think Mokolo is tired of Kayembe's antics, and he wants Freddie to get control of him. Maybe that's why he stared her down. Freddie is treating Nneka the way she did when Kayembe was born. That makes Nneka sad, because Freddie used to be like a mother to her.

I live in Maryland, but one day I would love to come out and see the gorillas but not sure what day would be the best time to come out thank you. ❤❤
Slowest days are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays. But if you have to come on another day it can still be a good visit.
I loved this long format, thank you Larry! It was interesting to see all the different family members’ interactions. Hopefully N’neka and Kayembe can continue to build their relationship; it would be nice for Kayembe to have N’neka pay attention to him and play a bit. He might feel less lonely and be less of a pest. Freddie and Kebi would appreciate it too. 💕🦍💕

@ValerieSue I always see chipmunks and robins hanging out at this gorilla habitat. This is one of my favorite things about this zoo.
That’s why Kebi puts Kunda on her tummy when moving, so Kayembe won’t take her! 😂 He is SO adorable and sweet…love taps. I would grab Jameela too if given the chance! I trust Freddie has good reason to give Nneka side eye…I wouldn’t want to be on Freddie’s BAD side especially when it comes to her kids. I love Kay’s long fur, and I love when Jameela is riding Fred and her feet cling on her it’s too cute! Thanks for the video Larry!

Hard to believe Freddie will be 50 next month. She looks very youthful! Aw I do feel a bit bad for Kayembe but his sisters will be on their feet and ready to rumble in no time!
Freddie is amazing with her young. No impatience with Kayembe, no behaving like he is a nuisance or shooing him away (only to protect Jameela). Gorilla moms always have endless patience for their babies usually under five. Around 5 they do tend to discipline more but most gorilla kids get pretty free run until the little white spots on their bottoms vanish signaling they’ve had enough time to understand troop hierarchy.

Jameela is absolutely thriving❣️ She’s growing so well - grabbing objects and taking a huge interest in everything that goes on around her (mainly Kayembe 😍). I think she’s going to be a tough little cookie - she’s already happy to give Kayembe a thump when he gets too close. 😂 Meanwhile, our dainty little Princess Kunda stays close to Mama Kebi - I think they’re both glad that Kayembe is distracted by Jameela❣️ I like the outdoor enclosure at Cleveland - it’s not huge, but it has a great range of natural textures, climbing opportunities and play equipment, as well as places for the gorillas to have ‘quiet time’ on their own. Freddie is foraging throughout the entire video, so there’s plenty of edible things for them to find - and that’s how gorillas spend most of their time in the wild. ❤ Thanks Larry for another fantastic treat. She is really thriving with her new family. Kayembe just wants to play and doesn’t understand the difference in their sizes. He’s went to be being the lone kid to 3 kids pretty fast. It’s an adjustment and he is doing well with it. Just like human kids theirs an adjustment period and they learn not to do things. Thanks Larry, I love this video. I think it's because Jameela was bottle fed and given tons of nutritional support due to being a premi. Also look at the size of mom. Jameela's bio mom was huge.

@ninawest8 I remember how upset I was over Kunda's size when she was Jameela's age. I was heart-broken for Kebi, because I really thought her baby might not survive. Kunda has come a long way and appears to be very strong.

Great video as always Larry. Kayembe is determined to play with one of his sisters, even if mama and auntie disapprove. Kebi looked like her head was on a constant swivel when Kunda was walking in front of her. Meanwhile, Freddy needs eyes in the back her head. It makes me sad to see Tusa looking so isolated, even though I know it is a lot by choice.

I think Freddy remember’s how N’neka just didn’t know how to raise Kayembe and left him laying on the ground. Just like then Freddy and Mokolo really watched N’neka when Freddy let Kayembe at about 10-11 months old start playing with N’”Jena. . I think Freddy and Mokolo will be just as vigilant when she let’s N’neka play with Jameela. It’s obvious N’neka wants to play with the baby, I wish all these great mother’s she’d learn from but at the San Fran Zoo she had a great mom and there were others she could learn from, I think until they’re at the age to play N’neka truly doesn’t understand what to do. That’s okay because occasionally it happens even when they had an awesome MaMa to learn from. I agree with what you wrote on a later video, sometimes proper material instinct just isn’t there and we see it in a few human beings as well, so how can we judge.

Does Freddie have biological children? Seeing as she spontaneously produced milk for her son and now her daughter I’ve been completely amazed
Freddy gave birth to 7 children. Four are alive today.
They all look mostly bored, except Freddie she has her hands full.
@bootgrease I don't think they are bored at all. The only one I'm concerned about is sweet Tusa, because she is the outcast. There are RUclips videos of gorillas in the wild, and they behave the same way. Gorillas are mostly reserved, peaceable beings.

When do baby gorillas start venturing out on their own? I know Freddy is a great mom but she always has her right with her. I just wonder the time frame of getting to wander some and play with others.
Baby gorillas stay in constant contact with their moms for 4-6 months, Jameela turned 4 months old May 5tg.
