Details about Freddy, born at the Oklahoma City Zoo in 1974, both parents were born in the wild, dad in 1960 ,mom in 1963, she was the oldest of 9 children, she spent her first 21 years in Oklahoma, and 17 years at Zoo Miami, she has been at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo for 7 years, she was eleven years old when she had her first baby, had 7 babies in 17 years,
she had 2 boys and 5 girls, first 5 born in Oklahoma, last 2 born at Zoo Miami, her last was born in 2002. Children's names: Ben, Jonesie, Unnamed, Nia, Acacia, Moka, & Alice,
Her third baby passed away before being given a name, 4 are still alive today, pictures shown are from Alice and Acacia,
Alice is at the Little Rock Zoo in Arkansas
Acacia is at the Riverbanks Zoo & Gardens in South Carolina
Nia is at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium in Ohio, and
Moka is at the Pittsburgh Zoo in Pennsylvania
After Fredrika started to care for Kayembe, her body began to change,
she was able to nurse Kayembe, despite not having given birth to him
The keepers called it spontaneous lactation (hormonal changes caused this).
--In general, gorillas live 35 years in the wild. In captivity they get better food, medical care and have no predators. Life expectancy can range from 50-60 years.
GORILLA CONSERVATION - one of the easiest things you can do to help gorillas is to recycle your cell phone or other hand held electronic device. Recycling electronics helps support gorilla conservation programs. Cell phones and other electronics contain a mineral called coltan (it is short for columbite-tantalite). Coltan is mined in areas where gorillas live. Recycling cell phones reduces the demand for coltan, which helps protect these native habitats. Some estimates report gorilla populations have declined 25% in the past 20-25 years.

Freddie might be a bit older but still she knows she has a lot to live for. She knows her babies need her. She is strong and resilient. Not to mention absolutely Beautiful ❤️
Que amor ❤️
I know. She is just amazing. And also a very pretty lady gorilla!! 🦍♥️
Wow! Freddy was born at our zoo here in OKC! Thank you for sharing.
@teddyneighbors3706 you are welcome!
Jameela sleeping peacefully without a care in the world on Freddy's arm. Absolutely adorable.
👍😁
Freddie is such a special gorilla!! She needs a statue ❤❤
YES! I've written that here, too. She won't know the difference, but she's just an amazing soul.
Hope a terrific sculptor takes the job.
Blessings.
👏😁
That baby gives her something extra to live for
Yes, I agreed 👍😁
Freddi is a miracle and an earth angel! She is the mother of all gorilla mothers.❤❤❤❤ we love watching her with her two babies! Thank you Larry for making this possible for us to see!
She is definitely an amazing lady and I love her. What Freddy has done is incredible, but the late great Toni from the Columbus Zoo still has the top spot in my heart for surrogate gorilla moms.
👍😁

@Lifewithpersians 👍😁
I love Freddie’s smile, she’s soooo proud and happy with her babies ❤❤
Yes! She is. 😁
. *HAPPY 50th BIRTHDAY, FREDDY !!!*
. 🍉 🍍 🍌 🎂 🍌 🍍 🍉
*If everyone had a mother like you, the world would be a better place.*
👏👏👏😁
Can’t wait to see this footage! The best present is new toys for Kaye to help Freddy out😮💨😊
NOBODY is going to harm that tiny baby! She is very loving and protective. Lovely video. Thank you.
You are welcome! 😁
Look at that sweet Jameela sleeping by mom 😊
😁
Love how you told Freddie’s story ❤❤
Thank you !
Freddie, I was born in 69. I can’t imagine starting over by adopting a newbie and taking care of a 2 year old. While you adopted these two children, just know the world has adopted all of you! ❤❤❤❤
‘63 here and it exhausts me thinking about it 😂 she’s amazing for sure!!! ❤❤❤
@@bethammons1239 same! I had my children late in life. I have a 19 & 15 year old. That in itself exhausts me! Already told my boys, “I am not taking care of y’all’s kids”! 🤣🤣🤣
Freddy was born on June 5 1974, she is going to be the big 50!!!!! Bless her heart ❤️❤️😍🤩🥰💪🙏😭
@KimberlyMessina-yu5fc 👏😁
Little Jam sleeping on Freddie arm soo cute and little keyo, just love him, happy that Freddie doesn’t shoo keyo away all the time!! Alice is beautiful ❤
@va4lvrs who is Alice?
Oops - I just realized she is Freddie's daughter.
I know I love how Freddy is always so patient with Kayembe. I see no body language from her ever shooing him away as if he is a nuisance. She only waves him back if he is too rambunctious around Jameela other than that endless patience and love always in Freddy’s heart for her little ones !!! 🦍♥️
👍
Larry, thank you so very much for giving us Fredrick's story.
She has had some very stressful moments in her life. It can not be pleasant for these animals when they are moved from familiar surroundings leaving old friends and family behind to be placed in new zoos with new gorillas.
Thank you!!!!
You are welcome
Thanks for the background on Freddie. What a marvelous representative of her species. And at 50 years of age, still love being a mother. Happy birthday Freddie. 🎂 🥰
👏👏👏😁. She is special. Thanks for sharing a comment today.
Ha! Kayembe trying to kiss the baby, but Freddie saying, 'Not so fast!' 😂
I'm pretty misty-eyed, darn it. Love Freddie to the moon. Because of her, these two amazing babies are thriving. And we can all agree that Kayembe's benefitted from her claiming him.
😂❤
Larry, this is great. Thank you for knowing we'd love to know more about all of them.
👍😁 thanks
It’s funny Kayembe acts just like a normal human 2 year old. And our momma Freddie deserves the biggest party for her 50th. It’s amazing she made it to 50 then with two little ones she basically adopted. She’s unbelievable and a wonderful mom.
👍😁
I’m getting teary eyed 🥲
🤗
She deserves the biggest 50th BD party ever! She’s a national treasure!
🤞😁
Oh my goodness that just brings pure joy. Look how content and relaxed they are. Freddy is amazing. I didnt realize acacia here in South Carolina was freddy's. I've seen her
I can’t wait to visit! Her troop is in my top 5!
👍😁
Freddie has a big and kind heart. I just adore her. She is beautiful inside and out. Kayembe & Jameela are very lucky to have her. ❤❤❤
👍😁
I love hearing the history
Me too! 🥰
👋😁
Fredrika is an outstanding mother! She accepts fosters as if they were her own. Never a second of hesitation. As I've said before, she could give some humans a lesson on mothering. Look how good she is to little Jameela!
👍😁
I cannot tell you how absolutely fabulous it is to be on the receiving end of such amazing footage ☺️ Would miss you, your knowledge, enthusiasm & willingness to share terribly 😢Thank YOU Larry 😀
Thank you so much! 👋😁
Poor Freddie. These animals are as attached to their families as humans. I wonder how it affects their psyche being moved and thrown into new troops. She is a wonderful mom.
🤷♂️
In the wild the males (son’s ) are made to leave around 15-16 and the females (daughter’s) when they come into maturity, this keeps from inbreeding. You’re right they know each other for life even if they only run into each other after years, they always recognize their family members.
Yes, those young males need to find bachelor groups or make a new troop.
Freddie’s a wonderful mama ! I can’t wait to celebrate her 50th 🎉❤
👏👏👏😁
Freddie is one amazing lady!
Yes she is amazing! 😁
Freddie....you are amazing!!! I hope you get a wonderful birthday party next week!
👍😁
These two babies couldn’t have gotten a better surrogate Mom. Freddie is amazing and a natural. Thanks so much Larry for doing this. It’s nice to know the background on her. ❤️❤️
👍😁
This video brought tears to my eyes! Thank you, Larry, for bringing us Freddie's story! It was so touching!
😁👋
Thanks lovely story i just love Gorilla's
Then you’re in the right place . Thanks for watching! 👋😁
Thank you, Larry. That was wonderful. Freddy is so special. 🩷
Yes 👏 she is!
Thank you
Thank You, Larry, for keeping us updated on the Troop.☺️🖐️

👍😁
What an amazing mom she is. Relaxed and in control of the little ones❤
Yes 😁
That was an absolutely wonderful story about Freddies life, I really enjoyed it. Knowing all that makes me just love her even more. She seems to get along with any gorilla she meets. Freddie the "gorilla angel". She is very special indeed.
Hi there! I haven’t seen your comments in awhile Julie!🙋🏽
Especially since Freddy’s always been an alpha female but even younger she used her intelligence and understanding rather than having to bully lower ranking females as sometimes they act up until the Silverback restores peace among the troop. This is one of the best troops and I can’t wait to bring the grandchildren up to see the Gorilla’s and the new babies. 🦍♥️🙏🏼♥️🙏🏼♥️🦍
@kelleybutler9203 👏👏 sounds like a good plan / happy visit!
Freddie is wonderful xxx ❤❤
She is! 😁
Omg how sweet story she is a natural and loving mom 😍❤ lucky kid's
👍😁
I love how gentle she is with her littlest one, Jameela... so cute and very tired. Brother really wants to aggravate baby sister, Freddie's not having it lol... good mama
👍😁
It's apparent that Freddy loves being a mom! Her two kids are so fortunate to have her as a mom! She is so patient and loving and kind. These two little ones are going to grow up and be wonderful parents. The whole troop seems to be very affectionate and loving and close. They all seem to deeply care about each other and have a deep connection. It is extremely moving to watch. We all should learn more from watching how they care before their own.
👍😁
We really appreciate you taking the time to make this video. Made me well-up.
I’m Glad you enjoyed the video. 😁
It is so sad how these gorillas are separated from their family members and some of them like Freddie find ways to make their lives a little more bearable. Thank God Freddie has a sense of purpose in her life in raising these orphans.
Agreed. They never get to see each other again in most cases.
And in reality do you think the male gorillas hang around other males? No, they all leave as they become adults to start their own families.
Females in the wild often move to another troup - looking for the strongest male. It is their instinct. This idea of happy families all growing up together is a human fairytale and not based on reality.
@@Creative-Chaos Not at 4 years old. This is what they sometimes do in zoos.
Probably because of breeding purposes. If it wasn't for conservation and correct breeding programs there would likely not be any in the wild. They were killed for their body parts, bush meat and head trophies. They would likely be extinct now if it wasn't for people like Diane Fossey who is credited from saving them from extinction. Unfortunately, many apes are still being killed for bush meat.
Freddy is amazing. And she looks really incredible for her age. I’ve seen gorillas in their 50s. Nene in Japan is around 52 and is quite arthritic. Freddy seems to have excellent mobility still and obviously energy and patience to oversee two little ones!! Plus Freddy doesn’t look a day over 30.
Happy to see some balls laying around the enclosure. Hopefully Kayembe will get some playtime with them. Little Kintaro in Kyoto carries his balls around all the time and has been for about two years so they seem very durable. Kintaro sits on his carries it around everywhere as he climbs and forages holding the ball with one hand.
Freddy’s own children are beautiful. Alice looks like Freddy!! Both amazing lovely pictures of her grown offspring. I appreciate the chance to see them.
Thanks for sharing Larry. I love learning about Freddy she is a REMARKABLE gorilla. I love them all dearly but Freddy and the love in her heart for children and maternal instincts are really incredible. 🥰👋🇨🇦
🦍♥️
Thank you for following along, and sharing.
Omg! That hug at the end... I am in awe
👏😁
Thank you, Larry, for making this video about Freddy. Kayembe and Jammela are loved and secured by one affectionate, experienced gorilla. Freddy is a living legend. I hope she will have a wonderful birthday next week.
👍😁
Ah, so Freddy got to watch her mom raise her 8 siblings.
No wonder she's such a good mother! (and how happy does Jameela look? :)
Jameel is so comfortable with being on Mama's back that she sleeps! I think that I'd incredible❤
👏👏😁
Thanks so much Larry for filming Fedrika and her family. I really love seeing all of them and how they reac with one another. Kayemba is wanting food from Freddie. Hope she shares with him. Looking forward to the next episode.
Now the oldest living captive Gorilla is Fatou, recently celebrated her 67th birthday. She was originally found in western Africa in 1959 by a sailor who brought her to France and used her as payment for his tab at a local tavern. Fatou was then acquired by French animal trader Madame Lefevre, who sold her to Berlin Zoo where she’s lived ever since.
Although her exact age is unknown, she was judged to already be at least two years old when she arrived at the zoo in May 1959. Fatou is a western lowland gorilla, a species with an average lifespan of 40-50 years in captivity.
For her birthday, zoo staff presented Fatou with a special basket of fruit and vegetables including lettuce, berries, watermelon and edible flowers.
Ordinarily, Fatou’s diet is comprised almost entirely of vegetables, as commercial fruit contains too much fructose.
“In general, we pay a lot of attention to good nutrition for our animals,” said zoo veterinarian Dr. André Schüle.
“And especially with older animals like Fatou, we always adjust meals accordingly. In her old age, Fatou needs very soft food that she can chew well even without teeth.”
Fatou’s favourite daily activities include foraging in her enclosure and climbing ropes.
She lives in her own compound as she prefers to keep her distance from the other gorillas.
Although she’s separated from the group, she is still able to socialize with her neighbours when she wishes.
The adjoining enclosure houses silverback Sango (age 19) and females Mpenzi (38), Bibi (27), Djambala (22) and Tilla (3).

Thanks for that interesting recap. 👍😁
She’s an amazing foster mom.
👍😁
I absolutely love Freddy’s natural mama instinct…. it’s beautiful to see Jameela with her mother and her big brother. I love it that only a female of the species can spontaneously lactate to breast-feed a new baby. I really do love that and she’s a sweet mama as well
👍😁
Thank you very much Larry for showing us the story of our wonderful Freddy. ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Alina, Acacia's only child died at her former zoo. She has never had a baby with Cenzoo. She has always been a good auntie to the babies in the group. Perhaps you saw her with Macy's or Kazi's sons. Did you know that Cenzoo and Mokolo are brothers?
@@dmoore2732 Ok thank you for correcting me I didn't know well something new I learned thank you so much❤ I was confused there are so many gorilla families I follow.😂❤
@@AlinaWhitfield0510 Yeah. It is confusing. They move these females from silverback to silverback. I hope Acacia gets pregnant soon. It is definitely her turn, and she is the oldest of the females by far.
You are Welcome! 😁
DAMN! Alice looks formidable! I would have believed that was a male!
Freddy is pretty impressive/can be intimidating herself. 👍😁
👍🏻 Thank you ❤ magnificent gorillas these intelligent creatures really have things to teach humans….see how they respect each other, love each other and show incredible gentleness…unworthy humanity should more study their codes of life many animals are not that “wild” beasts or not, they deserve to be preserved even more boldly, they are essential! ❤
😁👋
Wow. Freddie had 7 babies of her own, had those 7 before age 28. That’s a lot for one female gorilla! Now she’s raising 2 not her own. She’s truly amazing ❤ No wonder she’s so comfortable and expert at handling little Jameela and Kayembe. Super mom for sure! ❤
👍😁
really lovely video thank you Larry. Fredrika deserves the special recognition you have presented. Baby girl jameela is so content; such a sweet moment.❤❤❤
Glad you enjoyed it! 😁
Larry you did a fabulous job telling us Fredrika’s aka Freddy’s background story!! I thoroughly enjoyed it!!! I think even Kayembe enjoyed it as he was so calm during the story, while loving on his “mom” and baby Jameela. 😉 👍🏼😊🙏🏼💕 Well done!!!
Thank you! 👋😁
Great storytelling Larry. Thank you!
Jam is sleeping so peacefully and lil Kunda has a ball🥰🥰🥰
Thank you 😁
I could honestly watch Freddie and the babies all day and still not get enough lol! I feel like Jameela and i have the same favorite hobby....Napping in momma Freddy's arms ❤. Little girl is always peacefully asleep in Freddys caring arms and its just beautiful. Little girl had a rough start in life and has finally made her way to a loving protective momma she deserves. Just like Keyambi did. Keyambi is so cute sitting there playing and snacking next to mom and sister....He thinks he's not being noticed when he tries to wake up Jameela lol.
Glad you enjoy the videos! 👋😁
Thank you Larry, that was awesome. Jameela was so tired today, lol❤❤
Yes! lol. 😁
She has a kind face.
😁
Freddy, you’re the best!!!! May you have a long, healthy life!!

Yes, I hope a big party is in store for super Mom Freddy next week. What a special gorilla she is! Will there be treats and a big colorful ice cake for her?
🤷♂️.
Actually, Josephine was Fredrika's mother-in-law. Her son Jimmie Jr was Moka's and Alice's dad. He died suddenly when he was in his 30's. I'm wrong. Sorry about that. I thought Josephine was the mother to both boys, but she was only mother to the other son.
Can we take a moment to appreciate the fact two gorillas named Jimmie Senior and Jimmie Junior? 🥺

Thank you so much for the extra support! 👋😁
Jameela seems very sleepy.
Babies can be like that. Just the day before Jameela came out wide away.
OK now it’s very hard to imagine that Freddie was ever small like Jameela, but I’ll take your word for it. 😂. Great video much thanks, Nice to know their backgrounds. So nice to see pictures of Freddie’s grown kids. Jameela is sooo sleepy. I wonder if there were poachers in the 60s or if they just took Freddie to be in a zoo.
I’m sure there were poaches to take G for food and ornaments. Back then zoo’s also had expeditions to bring back animals for zoos laundry list ( couple gorillas , elephants, a rhino etc) that changes officially/unofficially after about 1965. Of course some people still go on African Safari’s but that’s not welcomed by any public entity.
Спасибо Ларри, что поделились с нами историей от Фредерики! Она потрясающая и необыкновенная! Фредди, дорогая, живи долго-долго, ведь ты так нужна своим деткам! ❤

You have beautifully portrayed Freddrika, a wonderful mother to these children. Today Jameela is sleeping, I think she is very tired and Kayembe is already getting used to his new sister, in a while he will be happy as he will have company to play with, there will be three little gorillas.I wish Freddrika much health and many more years of life. Thank you .
👍😁
To think she’s always been a alpha female as well. Her daughter’s you showed looked like serious momma’s and Kebi’s older Kambera at Zoo Atlanta is an alpha female as well. So it’s natural that Kebi watches everything Freddy does and she’s Mokolo’s second in command behind Freddy. It’s amazing how those three Mokolo, Freddy and Kebi always come out in the morning checking the security and safety of their habitat and so the babies and others are safe. The other females just start grappling food and eating. It shows just how different their personalities can truly be. Thanks 🙏🏼 for the new awesome information Larry, great content as usual.
👍😁
