  • This video shows you Jameela, and all the members of the gorilla troop at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. Watch Jameela, Kunda and Kayembe interact in this video.
    Birthdates: Mokolo 7/10/87, Fredrika 6/5/74, Nneka 9/23/98, Kebi 1/13/91/ Tusa 12/2/89, and Kayembe 10/26/21, Kunda 7/19/23, and Jameela 1/5/24.

    Text details from video:
Mokolo is 36 years old. Jameela weighed 3.1 pounds at birth, delivered early via c-section. Jameela received 24 hour care from the dedicated keepers at the Fort Worth Zoo. Before leaving Fort Worth she weighed more than 5 pounds. Today, Jameela nurses from Freddy and receives bottles from zoo staff in Cleveland. Now Kunda...she gets all her nourishment from Kebi alone. Kebi does not offer the baby to the keepers, like Freddy will do with her foster babies. Keepers do offer Kebi plenty of extra food to keep her healthy and happy. Kunda is really starting to climb now. Kayembe is 2-1/2 years old. Kebi is is 33 years old. Tusa is 34 and the most independent gorilla in the troop. Nneka - she gave birth to Kayembe about 6 weeks early. But, didn't show proper maternal care for Kayembe. It was Freddy who walked over and picked up Kayembe. Freddy has cared for Kayembe ever since. Perhaps now, Nneka can reconnect with Kayembe. I don't usually see these two (Nneka and Kayembe) together, I hope this continues. Something tells me the new training Cleveland has been doing is working

GORILLA CONSERVATION - one of the easiest things you can do to help gorillas is to recycle your cell phone or other hand held electronic device. Recycling electronics helps support gorilla conservation programs. Cell phones and other electronics contain a mineral called coltan (it is short for columbite-tantalite). Coltan is mined in areas where gorillas live. Recycling cell phones reduces the demand for coltan, which helps protect these native habitats.
Some estimates report gorilla populations have declined 25% in the past 20-25 years.
    _____________________________________________________________
Kayembe was the first zoo born gorilla at the Cleveland Zoo.
Kunda is the second baby born in Cleveland in less then 2 years.
Jameela is the first baby gorilla born via c-section at the Fort Worth Zoo.
The Conservation status of the Western Lowland gorilla is “Critically Endangered”.

Look at how relaxed Jameela is. She was clinging so tight before, and was so stiff. Now she's a real gorilla baby, just chilling on mom. I love watching the bond get stronger.

@elliotpalais6190 Freddy is 49 years old. They offer bottles to Jameela to supplement what she gets from Freddy. She is also used to bottles so why not continue to offer them- get opportunities for close contact to the baby. (Just my opinion)

@@larrysanimalsafariSuch a gorgeous, healthy, nurturing gorilla family. Forgive me for not knowing the answer to this question, but where is the silverback? Since he's not related to Jameela, I worry about infanticide, as we witnessed with little Tiny at at London Zoo, after the infant was killed by the new silverback. Is it just the females and one male young juvenile?.

Aw Kayembe. It’s a lot for him to be Freddy’s sole preoccupation until now she cares for Jameela and he’s kind of second fiddle.
Kayembe shows amazing restraint for a 2-year-old nevertheless. Before we know it his two little sisters will be playing with him all the livelong day! Just have to wait a bit longer sweet Kayembe.
Thanks Larry. So many beautiful babies in this troop! Mokolo is a wonderful, calm, steady silverback.
I still think of that time when Jameela was fairly new and the keepers put her in the hay with the troop (on the second occasion) and Mokolo went to her right away and stood over Jameela until Freddy came and picked her up-which did not take long but there stood Mokolo calmly watching over Jameela until one of his ladies claimed her-as if he knew to protect her until one of them came along to care for her. That was a demonstration of what looked like true caring on Mokolo’s part that really struck me.
I adore these amazing, incredibly feeling and perceptive animals. They amaze me every day.
Thanks again Larry for sharing these special moments with us all 🥰🦍♥️

I'm watching my little 2 and a half year old girl while watching this, so, yep, that explains everything lol. I love how Jameela rides on Freddie's back, unorthodox, up near her shoulder. She must like to see where they're going. You could tell Freddie was cognizant of it, adjusting her when need be.

Curious, please, Larry - Has Nneka been the next-to-the-most solitary in the troop, besides Tusa? It was awesome seeing her with Kayembe again. You're right: the keepers are advancing gorilla care in extraordinary ways.
Asking because she seemed more a part of Kayembe's life months ago, but now I notice she hadn't been sitting with the others in recent videos. Then again, I understand why the focus is on the 3 little ones. 💕 😊
    Thank you so much!

      @larrysanimalsafari  Месяц назад +2

You are correct, it is obvious now who the second most solitary gorilla. And yes, it was not always this way. I’m guessing it was after Kunda came on the scene that Nneka become more withdrawn - if I can say.
