It instantly reminded me of that "how I did my makeup in high school" thing that was popular on RUclips a while ago, and everyone was just slathering stuff on with fingers and those little foam eyeshadow applicators and moaning about how patchy it was and how much they missed their beauty blenders. 😂

I would wear colorful eyeshadow in the 2000’s no it wasn’t well done like today but I would pair that with the signature raccoon eyes of the era. Also the dresses length is probably because safiya is pretty tall
Right, Saf picked the major styles that were seen a LOT or publicized in TV and magazines. For example in the 80s my mom was in her 30s and turned 40 at the tail end and I was a baby up to 10 (in 89), so my mom looked much more 60s and 70s style because she was a stay at home mom and raising me (born 79) and having my 2 brothers (82 and 85) so she was not worried about updating her wardrobe and her makeup style has never changed, ever and she only wore makeup going to work (she was an accountant and went back part time when I was little until my brothers came along) or when going to school events or out to dinner (rarely). BUT the teenager who sometimes babysat me fully had big 80s hair and makeup. It is hard to pinpoint everything perfectly, but Saf definitely tried a lot harder than these bigger videos that slap anything together.
Yeah! Course it's not like everyone did, thought, and grew up the same way!
So yes ever back in the 1940 or 1960 not everyone like the same thing with clothes.

The 50s dress is probably short on her because she's so tall. Something like 5'9-5'10". It would likely be hard to find anything long enough for her that's truly vintage.

I think when Safiya gets a pro to help with hair, things get much more authentic. She knows when to ask for an assist. She's also 5'9 and solidly built, so I imagine it would be challenging to find true vintage that really fits her frame. (Speaking from similar experience!)

One thing I also think is important is that she says “inspired”. She tries really hard to find exact or very close.

Safiya is really fun and goofy, but I appreciate her intellect and her dedication to gathering data. When she strays into history or science I think she does a good job. I'm not a fashion historian or a chemist, nor do I play one on TV.
I liked her playing with soap hacks. She was like "I know these hacks are not going to work (because they never do) but here's how soap works, and here's what happens when you try doing this hack, and here's what happens to your lungs when you inhale lye vapour, and there's my time and money, flying away"
I think it's def the eyebrows that are throwing me off in the 90s looks? Saf has lovely thick eyebrows. Maybe if she did a 90s look again she could employ the good old drag queen trick of gluing them down!
Saf pointed out in her video that her eyebrows are too thick for 90s and 2000s, but she didn't want to mess with it since she used to pluck her brows when she was young and has started accepting them only as an adult.
moonandback That’s totally fair!! I wouldn’t go plucking out my eyebrows for the sake of a video, they’re sparse enough and Saf is lucky to have the ones she does! I’m glad she’s grown to accept them. Drag queens often glue their eyebrows down and cover them with makeup though so they can draw their eyebrows higher up to leave more space for their eye makeup, so I was just wondering if this would be a good option for Saf to draw in thin brows without having to get rid of her lovely thick brows!

It is that. In the 1990s-early 2000s, thin brows were in. But in the 1990s they were almost nonexistent, almost in a 1930s style. This look reminds me of the look of blonde teenagers, which looking back seemed to be the standard of beauty of the period. Movies, magazines and TV shows of the time highlight this. Then it sort of cemented that period when looking at the major commercial models of the time like Kate Moss, Gisele, Amber Valletta, Claudia Schiffer, and maybe Shalom Harlow. The super sexy women, like Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, and Christy Turlington sort of fell out of fashion after 1995 though Naomi experienced a rise after 2000. The “waif” look was definitely the dominant look, in every aspect including the straight hair and super highlighted hair of the early 2000s.

I really appreciate this. As a history person (a history professional in fact) watching people try to do historical clothes can be a bit cringey. But she’s really trying. She’s not just regurgitating information from a book that synthesized what fashion from a particular era is, she actually went to primary sources like catalogs and magazines and photo references. Right now I’m in the process from switching myself over from rural 1850’s American South to small Southern city on the edge of the “West” circa 1819 and am poring through every first hand source for 1819 fashion I can get my hands on then filtering it through the types of fabrics advertised by the local merchants and knowing what life was like for an upper middle class woman in cotton country in 1819. It’s a lot and a non professional wouldn’t have to look that closely but Safiya really did her research more than I’d expect a layman to do and put everything in context. Because let’s be real; interpreting history is about 90% putting things in context.
I very much appreciate your dedication. Might I suggest that you investigate the river cities? Places like Chattanooga, TN were "frontier" towns in that era, along with the Mississippi river towns. As much as I love my state, Alabama was the "in between" frontier and not much in your chosen era shows up. The capitol of the time was Catawba, now lost to shifting river currents, so there might be a fruitful line of inquiry there. Wishing you much luck in your endeavors!
It's really difficult I tried just putting together an outfit from 1980 I wanted something I could wear to work and just trying to find the right pieces is hard.
IIRC, she went to Stanford. She's smart, so it makes sense she would synthesize her research well.

Lol as somebody who WAS emo in this era, I can say that people did do weird eye makeup. It was definitely inspired by the Riot album covers. I remember doing zebra striped pink and black eye makeup a few times.

I knew a girl in 2009 who had black up to her eyebrows, eyeliner under her eyes and then she always had 2 black stripes on her cheeks like warpaint 😁 in 2007 i smeared eyeliner. And i thought it was really cool if the mascara smudged under my eyes and i just left it right there.

Hell, I knew a girl in 2001 who did blended vibrant colors with beautifully faded edges and a perfect mixing of two colors side by side (like blue and pink, green and yellow), and very heavy smudgy liner. It never looked bad on her, like somehow rebellious and polished at the same time.

The thing about hippie fashion was that the whole point of it was “WEAR WHATEVER YOU DESIRE, FLOWER CHILD”.
So there’s isn’t really a definitive hippie look. What we think of hippie now is really an amalgamation of broader trends in the community (flower were in fact a common motive) and other trends of the time that weren’t really connected to the movement.
I think you can say the same of punk. Viv Albertine's autobiography portrays this pretty well. She was the bassist for The Slits and was part of the original punk clique in London. She was Sid Viscious' girlfriend for a while. Anyway, I think that pretty much shows her credentials, lol.
Anji Thompson Thats a great point, maybe it’s just something on human nature, the more distance we are from a set of people the easier it is to put them in cookie cutter categories that aren’t necessarily accurate.
Maybe in 30 years people will dress as hipsters in hipster theme party and everyone will think they all looked alike and every teenager at the time was one.
Considering that unless you were actually a part of the group all you know about is what other people say, be it journalists, fashion photo's, newspaper articles or films from or about the era. So we only see a small sample of information about the group we are interested in.
Everything eventually gets reduced to the ephemera left behind. And becomes the homogenised looks, for example, like a fancy dress party.
Hippie fashion certainly started out as wear whatever you like but it soon morphed into a recognizable look and there was earl y on a very subtle pressure to conform. I remember being told my look wasn't "cool", that I looked too straight and I was most definitely a hippy dippy child of the 60s. Oh well.
I'm so sorry this is such a well thought out and informational comment but all I can focus on is that you're looking for the word "motif" not "motive"
My fashion style is one of three things:
1. Whatever's comfortable
2. Whatever outfit I can quickly throw together using what's in my closet
3. Maybe something that looks cute on me, I don't know
4. whatever is affordable or that I've been given for Christmas

Because she was focusing on American fashion you might not have seen it but I promise you hot/neon eyes were a big thing in the early 2k. At least in my high school. I was always super jealous of the girls brave enough to do their make up like that. Also jealous of their non allergies to it.

If you want review of evolution/history of goth fashion video go and watch It's Black Friday. She is goth youtuber and I personally think you need a lot of knowledge on the subject to pinpoint mistakes and she delivers
I suggest you watch It's Black Fridays video(s? i only know one but there could be more) on that! Karolina is definitely great at research and anything about fashion history, but i think a video from an actual goth on that topic would still be a bit more accurate/topical i think.

I love that Safiya didn't just throw the title "heavy metal" or "hard rock" innacurately for the metal outfit. I love that she did research for what the look represents "glam metal"
With her makeup being too good... It's not that good makeup techniques didn't exist it that the average consumer didn't really know or care about them. It was limited to celebs, rich peoples and the fashion and beauty industry and people who took beauty seriously as a hobby. But on the matter of colourful eyeshadow as a scene kid. It was definitely a thing as people progressed from emo to scene kid (urban decay vice pallete anyone? ) but there was always heavy winged eyeliner as well which saf missed.
Spot on! Contouring, highlighting and blending etc. was not something that ordinary people bothered with. It was a professional makeup-artist thing, thats the only way you'd know about it really.

For the '97 look you said "maybe it's the eyebrows". For me, I think that's the biggest (well, smallest) thing. Eyebrows now are so, so much more natural and full. 90s through early 00's were tiny, and often very unnaturally shaped - at least form what I remember.

It's also the loose clothing and high-waisted pants. Everybody wore baggy jeans and slacks in 90s and early 2000s, nobody would be caught raising the pants as high as she does, and they would be a few sizes larger (oversized clothing was the thing until mid 2000s).
I mean it depends what your natural eyebrows are like. My eyebrows are perfect for the nineties. If I tried to do modern eyebrows I'd look like Groucho Marx

in 2007, I used only one color of eyeshadow (my look was purple eyeshadow), but I did try to make it slightly ombred...? "darker" on the outer edge, and gradually going lighter till the inner corner.
My best friend did peachy pink. Everyone did only one color and that same color for the entire year LOL

I wouldn't say that necessarily, esp with hair. Hair is very personal and not everyone has the ability to follow hair trends or process and style it often (speaking as a natural hair afro-latina who's hair hasn't changed much). Also for makeup, that can become a bit classist. People who couldn't afford makeup back then still wore the clothes being manufactured of that time and fit the fashion. I'm not trying to come across mean or anything! I just think a lot lol I'm also a makeup artist myself so when style videos pop up they just get me thinking :p

In the 90s and 2000s video, Saf actually does point out that her makeup is not accurate, but she didn't want to pluck out her eyebrows to create the look they had back then.

From what I remember from being super emo in 2007, we mostly used a black eye pencil. MAYBE some red or pink. But i don't remember green at all.

It’s not like colors and stuff weren’t a thing, it’s just they weren’t as ubiquitous as the heavy black raccoon eyeliner. Literally everyone did that. I remember they used pencils heated up with lighters and then liquid eyeliner on top and loads of mascara. Foundation was pale, no blush or bronzer or anything else and then concealer lips with pale milky glosses
Safiya's "Lengthy Lady" outfit gives me huge late 60s/early 70s Elizabeth Taylor vibes and I kind of live for it

I absolutely love that she’s really honest and fair with her judgement and isn’t just nitpicking for the drama and the ‘tea’. Shows you that when she actually criticizes something it’s bec it’s wrong not bc she wants to get famous by dragging others.
Just a hypothesis, maybe the early 50s was influenced a lot by the 40s is because rationing hasn't been lifted. Or the countries were still going through a recovery period from the war.

It really depends on the year. Late 90s, around 97 to 99, yes the eyebrows were thin. I didn't start plucking my Chewbacca eyebrows until 1997. Before then we were going through the resurgence of the hippie fashion and the grunge flannel period. Eyebrows were not a focus.
In her video she talks about her eyebrows not being "authentic", but she couldn't bear to pluck them after all the work she did to get them back to normal after plucking them to death in the 90's and early 2000's.
I was super-impressed by Safiya's vintage videos. I, too, suspect that Safiya's vintage "fifties" dress might actually be early sixties. It's obviously not full enough for the middle fifties circle skirt look and I think the crinoline she picked is too big for it. I wish she'd gone with a longline bra that nips in the waist (Rago, Goddess, and others make ones that work well), or underbust corset, bc the Rago waist-cinchers just aren't that great. That said, the length issue might be more to do with the fact that she's 5'10". If you're very tall, busty, or over about size 14US, midcentury vintage is hard.

This is why I love safiya, I feel like she always puts in so much effort, even if she doesn't get it perfect, she really tries her best to do research, and she always knows when to call someone else in who knows better for help. And she'll always go all out (if you've seen her mixing every _________ together videos you'll know what I mean)

I think flare jeans were fine in 2007 but I think high waisted jeans were a flop that year. I remember many people making fun of those celebs. It wasn’t vintage yet(high waisted jeans) and it wasn’t new either. They were “mom jeans” and not in the “cool way” that the 90s levis are now.

To be fair to Saf's emo eye makeup, heavy eyeshadow would have been worn by scene kids. I was dressing up for emo night at a bar, and for maximum authenticity, I actually tracked down a few articles from around 2006-2009. If you were an emo kid and you wanted to go all out (which, of course, I did), you'd actually do a pretty heavy smoky eye with dark, desaturated colours (I used black and bruise-tone purple and I think it came out pretty good). The bigger problem is probably the shape. While the eyeliner is often winged, the eyeshadow itself is far more rounded, applied both to the lid and waterline, blended out at the edges.
I love how easy 2010s fashion will be to recreate because it's just like sweatpants with a t-shirt, tight long sleeve, or hoodie as well with jeans and the above following.
Kevin Aucoin's book called "Making Faces" talked all about technique, face shape, brush types, product applications on different skin types and age ranges. Some of the most famous women and a few men were featured in his book. He was a MAKE-UP TITAN. And that was in the 90's before he passed away. Just a bit of side info. Great video!

I think a lot of professional techniques never trickled down to the mass population. The techniques and talent existed but only makeup artists and gmaous people had access to them.

As a former scene kid, I can confirm that we definitely did a lot with eyeshadow... including bold, colorful patterns.
Take Ira Vampira's bold blue eyeshadow as an example, or Amber Katelyn Beal's rainbow eyeshadow look as an example.

As an upper-limit Millennial myself, let me tell you that fashion changes literally every three years so drastically, and it is hard to convince people younger than me of this, but they will find themselves as hideous and clownish in retrospect by the time this fashion era is over. It happens to us all! And way faster than it used to, too, but on a personal note, I apologize for early nineties eyebrows. Hold on to your shoes, though. Those things always come back.

The shirt for the punk look was a little 2000's , it seemed to stand out too much against the red, i think if she got a worn out white graphic tee it would have been a little better.
American emo girls wore red eyeshadow to honor certain bands that used red heavily. I wore red and black eyeshadow. :)
Loved the video! One thing, though. For the 2007 emo look, she did say she was partially going for a “scene” look, which DID have pretty extreme eye makeup. Sometimes it was just solid black, but there was definitely some people who did colorful looks as well.
