And a wide hat... And a parasol! I love Bernadette's energy when it comes to make a critique of an outfit :)
It's always a bit strange to suggest something is of the wrong period. I can understand that being anachronistic when the style only existed after the period in which it is supposedly set. But to have Victorian clothing in the Edwardian Era? Surely that was quite common. I'm 40, and have clothes going back 20 or more years, and if they're well made and still fit, many more people will have kept their suits and dresses. Do people in charge of making costumes take this in to account, or must everything be exactly of the fashion of the day?
_"This is what Mary Poppins would have looked like if she lived in history."_ No, that's what Mary Poppins would have looked like if she lived in a noir movie as a detective in an oversized trench-coat. It's like the illustrator didn't even listen to the video, it's honestly worse than the movie portrayal.
I could sketch a much better illustration and have the silhouette be more accurate to a proper historical figure with definitely more shape than a blob. They should hire an illustrator that listens to the historian.
Please let Bernadette do some art for this series, as she once was a professional costume illustrator. The artist you currently have can't seem to get the silhouettes right, and the lines and details are very simplistic. It looks cartoonish and often un-period, and doesn't match in tone or style the expertise of the historians we see.

I'm the exception to the rule... It's just that when I comment on Bernadette's videos, I proof-read thrice and use online dictionaries to make sure my spelling and grammar is at least comprehensible, because frankly, she doesn't deserve my usual writing style.
fun fact: Mary Poppins's costume designer was Julie Andrews husband. They met when they were just kids, and when Walt Disney offered Julie the part, he asked her what was his husband job. When she said that he was an aspiring costume designer, he told her to tell him to bring his portfolio to Disney studio. And well... the rest is history.
Bernadette Banner is a shining dress historian star! Eloquently presented accurate information without sounding stuffy. Glamour, you would be very wise to have Ms. Banner do more costume and wardrobe fact check vignettes. As her subscribers know, she's the BEST!!!! P.S. She is an excellent illustrator/artist, too!
@@SwordsmanRyan I get what you mean, but there are caveats. She says she adopted it unintentionally, because of her frequent trips to live and study in the UK (London etc). She speaks well and enjoys using interesting vocab, and if you watch more of her videos it isn't as jarring as the first. I felt the same way in the first video I saw of hers, I disliked that she was "lying" with her voice type, but honestly I stayed subbed and watched more and now absolutely adore her, I hope she never changes for anyone. Just because she speaks differently than most New Yorkers doesn't mean what she is saying is wrong or unworthy. She knows a LOT of fashion history and loves to share it for free with others online, which is amazing, and any of her quirks just make her human. Just my 2 cents.

In her own videos she talk a lot faster and I'm not sure how but it makes it sound more authentic and less annoying. She definitely enjoys using her broad vocabulary and that can seem a bit pompous if it comes out as premeditated.
@@Hope-si1kb She REALLY is nice and fun to be around and her voice suits her and its really her - tho for this video someone apparently wanted her to slow down for some reason. she is Naturally that precise & carefull in her enunciation - unlike most people who speak fast & slur their words..
@@Hope-si1kb i agree. However, in her own youtube videos, the talks in a much more natural tone hence it sounded better and not forced--maybe the reason she sounded annoying in here is because she is expected to talk slower for the sake of audience, and it definitely interfere with her usual image and speech character
That's how you make someone check the historical accuracy of a look in the movie, congratulations, Bernadette! You can see she really knows what she's talking about, rather than someone who doesn't even know the difference between stays and a corset.
@@clairefazel8470 until about 1800, women wore garments that were known as (a pair of) stays or (a pair of) bodies. The term "corset" only came in later. the terms "stays" and "corset" are often used to differentiate between the pre-1800 and the post-1800 shape *its a bit more complicated than that but its a very basic explaination.. and if you are interested if fun Interesting things like that Do check out Bernadettes you tubes.. she is an AMAZING seamstress.. just understand she is a master in her craft and fun too..
@@clairefazel8470 stays were mostly used before 1800. The easiest way to determine them is that they have straps on the shoulders and they open up through laces at the back, and have a wooden busk in the front. They are also mostly stiffened with cords and has no metal. Corsets on the other hand has a metal busk and opens up at the front, and the lacing at the back is more for adjustment of the corset. They're also stiffened with whalebone.
Regarding the “entire stuffed birds” Ms. Banner mentioned at 12:35: these highly elaborate hats may have been decorated with birds of paradise and similarly ostentatious tropical birds. The rarer the bird, the more en vogue the hat. This practice led directly to the founding of the Audubon Society. The desire to decorate one’s hat with an entire flock of bluebirds or a cloud of egret feathers was having devastating effects on bird populations.
If you're interested in the history of various uses for birds of paradise, you should read "The Feather Thief" which talks about the Victorian-style method of fly-fishing and features a person who robbed an important natural history museum to source bird feathers of this purpose. Amazing read about history and contemporary issues with "traditions" that harmed our world in the past.
For those who are interested in seeing a closer to history version of the Mary Poppins' Jolly Holiday dress, the presenter Bernadette Banner has recently finished with her reconstruction of the dress according to the historical aesthetics and silhouettes. 10/10 recommend watching it, her cinematography and explanations remain beautiful throughout much like her explanations in this video
This is the best of Glamor's "What they got wrong/right" videos! So happy they listened to their viewers & got someone that specializes in the time period in question for the characters the video is about. This is the first one that I feel no need to correct anything.
Sorry but I hope you could do a different style of drawing for these series, the final drawings never really give the full sense what the outfit would have looked like in film.
Seeing these illustrations in the same video as Bernadette, knowing her drawing style, made me wish they had asked her to do it. Not to mention the walking suit looked more 1920's than 1910. They neglected the Edwardian silhouette features that are in the back!
A very interesting video. But, I must point out that Bernadette doesn't take into account that Mary Poppins is a Timelord and some deviation in historical accuracy should be forgiven as she was bound to get a few details incorrect. :D
I love her channel. She is so perky and well informed. I taught history and still write historical fiction. Clothing mattered and still matters because humans wear clothes.

@J Freed - I always referred to my offcut pieces of fabric as "remnants" as my grandmother always did. And now, in just a few short months of discovering the lovely Bernadette, "cabbage" they are now called.
How could I roast you, Bernadette? It's nice, informative, with lovely English. It's only weird to see you like an anchor woman with a sterile background.
It actually makes sense that Mary Poppins' "workaday" clothes would be a little simpler, narrower, and older than the fashion magazines, so the old hat is forgivable due to accuracy, as servant women often wore out of date clothes and cast offs.
Excuse me as I Bernadette fangirl over here, and I absolutely love the idea of having Morgan Donner do a Sleeping Beauty analysis or getting Karolina Zebrowska or even Cathy Hay to do a segment on here!
Amazing, amazing, amazing! 😍My only point of critique: The lovely Bernadette should have drawn the illustrations. She has a very delicate, sophisticated style of drawing mannequins and fashion, the ones you used looked way too cartoony for the interesting topic and well-spoken delivery.
@@jasminey1589 That's true. Then again it's no big deal to digitalize a drawing. I guess it's about maintaining a consistent style throughout their series, and maybe an existing contract with a designer.

ScorBug92 She’s Bernadette Banner she has a RUclips channel. Please go and check it out she is amazing and needs more views.
god yes please change that noise. I love Bernadette but that marker noise almost had me clicking off the video really fast
I agree they really need to change that awful scratching marker noise
@@Mark_R_Tho that was completely unnecessary to say

I'm the exception to the rule... It's just that when I comment on Bernadette's videos, I proof-read thrice and use online dictionaries to make sure my spelling and grammar is at least comprehensible, because frankly, she doesn't deserve my usual writing style.
@@AbteilungsleiterinBeiAntifaEV I feel the same way
@@AbteilungsleiterinBeiAntifaEV ditto
fun fact: Mary Poppins's costume designer was Julie Andrews husband. They met when they were just kids, and when Walt Disney offered Julie the part, he asked her what was his husband job. When she said that he was an aspiring costume designer, he told her to tell him to bring his portfolio to Disney studio. And well... the rest is history.
I'm almost positive he was a set painter, not a costumer
@@quethesparkle in Mary Poppins he is credited as a design consultant, but Julie herself has told this story in many interviews.
RumMonkeyable not only does she sound stuffy (to me) she also sounds fake. Either she has to push this silly affect all the way or cut it entirely.
@@SwordsmanRyan orrr just watch her videos.
@@SwordsmanRyan Not really an "affect". It's just good diction with a pinch of eloquence, both of which more of us could probably do with.
It was a little odd to see Bernadette just sitting and talking as opposed to pointing, stitching, cutting or even drafting while she spoke.
'Fashion expert checks Mary Poppins wardrobe'
Me: nice WAIT. IS THAT BERNADETTE?!?!?!?!?!
ive been a long time fan of Bernadette and love her videos. Much love❤
seriously guys hire a better artist. or let bernadette do it.
I think if they did hire a Bernadette as a artist as well, they would have to pay her mare💰!....( Even though this video would have got even more views)
you can tell she slowed down her speech, it almost doesn’t suit her
Her voice really annoys me because it seems force or something, you know? No hate towards her, I'm sure she's nice
Hope
She spends her time between New York and London so... there you go.
I'm new to this kind of fashion. VERY new. So could you tell me the difference?
@@clairefazel8470 me too, all I know is that the corset came after stays like a sequel :1
I just don’t remember what a stay is, but I know an ok bit about corsets. Just an ok bit.
I love how dress historians are always dressed well... historically
You should check out her channel where she makes accurate period clothing (often in the original hand-sewing method!)
her walking skirt..to die for. and lady sherlock no words.
it's like other historians and their décor. im still in school but my room already looks like an antique shop
This is Ms. Banner's very usual manner of dress. She is a delight.
This comment section is just the Bernadette hype train and I'm SO okay with that
YESSSSSSS
I literally saw Bernadette on the thumbnail and I was like "is that her? IT IS HER"
The modern ceramic makeup threw us all.
They finally got a legit historical fashion expert
Speaking of feathers...
The most expensive item lost in the sinking of the HMS Titanic was $2 million ( yes, I said million) in OSTRICH FEATHERS!!
Wow
@Tom Sanders wtf are you on
Hey, that’s Bernadette! Great job Bernadette! What is with the drawings? That walking suit is nothing like Bernadette described.
Am I the only one feeling like a proud mother because of Bernadettes collaboration with Glamour???? I saw her and had to watch it!!!!!
I'm convinced Bernadette is in fact Mary Poppins in the future, and no one can tell me otherwise
Oh my god yes
I mean.... we have theories that she's actually immortal or a witch
I just said the same.
bernadette is such a good artist, why didn’t you let her draw
An ACTUAL fashion expert!? I live her SOOOO MUCH
Potassuim_Cation go watch her RUclips channel! She makes clothes very similar to what she’s talking about by hand 😊💕
The others were also fashion experts/historian smh
For those who are interested in seeing a closer to history version of the Mary Poppins' Jolly Holiday dress, the presenter Bernadette Banner has recently finished with her reconstruction of the dress according to the historical aesthetics and silhouettes.
10/10 recommend watching it, her cinematography and explanations remain beautiful throughout much like her explanations in this video
This is the best of Glamor's "What they got wrong/right" videos!
So happy they listened to their viewers & got someone that specializes in the time period in question for the characters the video is about. This is the first one that I feel no need to correct anything.
Was anyone else kinda thrown off and weirded out by the lipstick shade and lack of cozy apartment?
I'm alittle thrown by her actually calling it a corset, too lol
The red lipstick looks gorgeous on her
The way she speaks is so fascinating and enthralling, wow

Its so adorable
it was supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
Sorry but I hope you could do a different style of drawing for these series, the final drawings never really give the full sense what the outfit would have looked like in film.
They should have had Bernadette draw them. She is quite the illustrator for costumes.
Big agree extrae
It's not supposed to resemble the outfit on film, but what it should have looked liked had it been done historically accurately
Msfinable THEYRE drawn horribly and don’t allow you to see what it would look like if it were translated to film.
Dan Luedke well technically 😂 she said on her instagram that they cut out a time lord joke she did!
She said she referenced it but they cut it ☹️
Aww. Why would they cut such an important piece of Mary Poppins lore?
They did cut out her joke lol

Bernadette! That's amazing! I love her youtube channel!
I briefly glanced over the thumbnail and had to do a double take... Bernadette! I am so happy!
Great critique, Bernadette! ❤️ Who better to do this video than our own modern Edwardian? If only they had asked her to do the illustrations, too!

Maybe Karolina Zebrowska.

@J Freed - I always referred to my offcut pieces of fabric as "remnants" as my grandmother always did. And now, in just a few short months of discovering the lovely Bernadette, "cabbage" they are now called.
Bernadette, my favorite seamstress!! I love this so much!!
How could I roast you, Bernadette?
It's nice, informative, with lovely English. It's only weird to see you like an anchor woman with a sterile background.
I know right? Bernadette without some obligatory sewing chaos around her is almost uncanny
And she's usually so fresh and fun, always excited about a new project... I miss seeing these adorable traits of her in this video
@@PatriciaSantos-wz2jc - I disagree with you. I found Ms Banner to be excited in this video. AND fresh and fun.
@@MossyMozart we only have different interpretations of the video, but the fact is that she is still amazing :)
Elle-Iza Logan she may not be comfortable with digital illustration
@@jasminey1589 That's true. Then again it's no big deal to digitalize a drawing. I guess it's about maintaining a consistent style throughout their series, and maybe an existing contract with a designer.
Did anyone else notice that Bernadette usually talks like five times faster? Maybe they asked her to slow down but I love the way she talks in her videos
I love that Bernadette got to do this. She's so lovely!

So happy to see Bernadette here! I love hearing her speak, she’s so easy to listen to. I’ve been enjoying the series with the other guests as well.
Who is this made-up, slowly-spoken creature? Why, it's only my very favourite time traveller. You did a marvellous job, BB!
This is wonderful. Can you do one for My Fair Lady? Have always been curious about the ascot dress's accuracy.
Yes!!!
I think the silhouette is correct, but I don't think anything else is.
This was such a fun video and Bernadette was the perfect person for it!
@Elizabeth H - And Ms Banner was very diplomatic in her criticism.
Her hat being dated makes sense! Didn’t Bert recognise her when he started drawing the iconic silhouette of her hat? They’ve met before, years prior, and she would have been wearing the same hat for him to recognise it :)
She's so gorgeous I demand that we all take a moment to appreciate her. Thank you
