16:59 It notably took place at St. Paul's Cathedral, not Westminster Abbey, since the wedding was enormous and meant to befit a first in-line to the throne male. A prince of Wales hadn't been married while he held that title since the reign of Victoria, so St. Paul's was considered the larger and more theatric option.
It did nothing for her figure the shoulder and sleeves looked like they were swallowing her alive. They could have done a lot more with less fabric. It did look like a baggy 1980's prom dress. Lady Diana was as always beautiful but this wasn't quite the custom-fitting and flattering wedding dress one would expect for a royal wedding.
The TV viewing of the royal wedding of Diana and her prince made her dress look dull and sort of dowdy - it was NOT! I saw it in Brisbane when it was on the tour of Australia and found it stunning, gorgeous and utterly charming. For instance, her veil had tiny crystals scattered throughout it and it complemented her dress beautifully. One didn't see that on the screen. The dullness was caused by it not being white, plus TV did nothing to bring out the pearls or crystals, but in real life it was the loveliest wedding dress I've ever laid eyes upon. Diana was a romantic and wished her wedding gown to reflect that ideal; it did in every way possible and I'm sure she felt like a princess in it on her big day, and isn't that part of being a bride?
It was a truly global phenomena. I watched the Charles & Diana's Wedding live on BBC/Dutch tv - my Mom & I were glued to tv set. And her giant wedding dress (Diana was "only" 9 years older than me) fitted my idea of what a princess should look like. And also was the real beginning of 80's "overkill" (big is better). And went perfectly with the whole "fairy tale" dream wedding...that slowly became a nightmare...😔
I’m glad in real life it was prettier because it didn’t translate well on tv and pictures. I was so disappointed and let down when my family and I, who were on vacation that week in Colorado, got to the hotel and turned on the tv and saw the news of the wedding. I was sitting on the bed and when I saw it, I thought yuck! All that hype for weeks and weeks about what it was going to look like and then to see what I called a monstrosity. The only thing I liked was the train and the veil, because I was all about wedding dresses with long trains in my youth. But if you say it’s prettier in real life, I’ll take your word for it.
She was also quite tall, and this could pull off that look beautifully. As a 15 year old watching, I thought it was the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen. I don’t think people can understand what an impact it had.
This was 1981, before what we think of as 80s style, other than the ruffles which were popular at the time. The dress helped swing fashion toward Big 80s.
I much preferred their toned down version of Diana's dress rather than her actual dress. I was never keen on it and thought it was way too fussy and over the top.

@@abbyextravaganza Not intending to come across as judgmental here but the fact of the matter is that this clip purports to be a historical glimpse of moments that actually occurred in real life as compared to how they are portrayed by “The Crown” series. Missing a major fact such as where a monumentally historic royal event took place begs the question-what else has been inaccurately reported? Sad because it is a fun video and was enjoying it until the blunder of reporting the wrong venue. Good effort though. :)
I was a contemporary of Diana’s and I absolutely loved her dress! Her extreme youth and height and slenderness allowed it to be a success. All in all, I think princess Margaret’s wedding dress was the most beautiful.
I love Raissa Bretana's corgi brooch for this video. She always chooses a brooch that fits into the video she's doing (a martini glass for 'Mad Men' and a chess piece for 'Queen's Gambit').
It was mentioned 3 maybe 4 times that Diana was married at Westminster Abbey. In truth, she married Prince Charles at St. Paul's Cathedral in London, as it could accommodate a larger amount of invites to the wedding.
The actress portraying Queen Elizabeth looked terrified and ready to burst into tears, butthe real Queen is always pictured with a comfortable smile. Queen Elizabeth was beaming with love when she was with Prince Philip.
Probably because The Crown seems intent on portraying The Queen as insecure, when she isn’t. It makes zero sense that she’d be intimidated by Mrs Kennedy, it was more likely to be the other way around.
My mother had a Princess Di style wedding dress! She was super slender and looked awful in the faux Victorian styles that were available, but then Diana had her wedding and her dress became all the rage. My mom looked really good in it, and was married in the gorgeous garden my grandmother kept behind her house.
I’ve always found that dress borderline comic, but I thought that maybe it was fashionable for the day? That said, the wedding dress worn by Charles’ sister was older but still way more interesting... even the dress the queen herself had was better looking.
It was extremely fashionable for the day. The 80's were all about the bigger the better. A ton of women in the 80's had puffy sleeves and bows with a lot of lace.
Oh yea, that dress was completely 80s. I was a little girl then and wedding dresses. If you saw those dresses now! Big puffy sleeves and LOTS of embellishments. Back then, those were the dress styles I was gonna wear on my wedding day. I got married in 2004. My dress was VERY simple. How times had changed.
A lot of people did think it looked ridiculous at the time. Especially once she walked out and it was all crinkled. There's a gap between 'high fashion' and this sort of overdesigned dress and what was trending. Her dress sort of took it to a different level.
@@happyfacefries Well, those were the fashion in part because of her dress. It wasn't in style when she got married, and the dress was not beloved by fashion critics.
My mother married in 1950 and her wedding dress was very much like the one Princess Elizabeth wore only without the elaborate embroidery. It was satin, with long sleeves and the same neckline.
I recall being so disappointed the morning of Charles and Diana's wedding, because I thought her dress was hideous. And when she got out of that carriage it was so incredibly wrinkled. Seeing that a few months before my wedding, I wondered if there was a way I could stand up or kneel inside of the rented limo on the way to the church. Last thing I wanted was any wrinkles.
Yes, and nobody bothered to adjust the hemline as the underskirt was exposed on the side. The dress was so oversized it basically swallowed her. The dress doesn’t have to be form fitting but it was basically shapeless on her.
The volume of the dress succeeded in making her look petite, not like she was nearly six feet tall, so that’s something. She also lost a lot of weight during the engagement so the dress needed constant fittings beyond the usual needed for a custom dress. Silk taffeta is prone to wrinkling easily (and it’s a bee-yotch to handle and sew), so some people saw the wrinkles of just a characteristic of the material and not a detriment. Silk shantung or slubbed silk would have been more seasonally appropriate and wrinkle resistant, and is a similar weight to taffeta but more "forgiving" to handle. Funny it wasn’t chosen instead. The Emmanuels didn’t have a backup wedding dress on hand in case the design of the original was leaked. That was a rumor that was spread at the time of the wedding that they later repudiated. Funny that the story was repeated by the "fashion historian."
@Mc Kenna, just curious if you found a way to travel to your wedding without wrinkling your dress? Or did you opt to simply change at the wedding venue? I hope I don’t sound weird!
It’s awful because Charles is known to be an artist and loves painting. He should understand the importance of self expression and he completely disregards her art of singing and dancing. Yet, loved theatre and performance. He doesn’t dislike it because it’s ‘art’, he dislikes it because it’s Diana who’s expressing herself.
That's what happens when you force someone to marry someone they don't love. Really awful the queen and Prince Philip and others forced him to marry her and her mother with Camilla's family forced her to marry someone else so Charles can't!

I saw on another video that the costume designer for the crown said she purposely wasnt trying to exactly copy Diana's wedding dress. I think because of the way it would look on screen.
How wonderful and selfless that, people had the incredible gesture of giving her some of their textile coupons . It shows how much they cared for their (at the time ) princess .
Elizabeth's second dress may have a 50s feel but fashion doesn't automatically change at the turn of the decade. It kind of fades in and out and 1961 would still have been appropriate to wear some 50s fashions, especially since people really loved the New Look. Plus, fashion would have taken a lot longer to evolve then since there wasn't social media which has made fashion a lot faster.
Lovely post ! My biggest criticism is that the Queen has always dressed in her own style , she is tiny , high fashion suits the tall and her hair is styled for the heavy tiaras she wears . I don’t think Stylish Jackie O out dressed her at all , both ladies looked fabulous in the real life photos .
As a contemporary only in age to Princess Diana I like it too but those sleeves always make me think of Anne of Green Gables' wish for immense puffed sleeves.

This was a great breakdown of the fashions displayed on the series. However, the 1981 royal wedding took place at St. Paul’s Cathedral, NOT Westminster Abbey.
Emma looked so much like Diana. Although she could not really pass as her twin, she sure could as her sister. Emma said in one interview that her mother looked a lot like Diana. I wish she would share photos of her mother.
@Nicole Nelson No of course, but I think it's a shame she did'nt wear a more timeless dress. ^ ^ I must admit I find hers quite ugly, and unfortunately too much "stuck in the 80's". Usually royal wedding dresses are timeless and can be appreciated through any era, but this one... Nah. 🤗
It used to be dated, but the trends of early 1980s have recently come back around. Puffed sleeves, blouses with big collars... I don't know if it has affected bridal fashion, but coinciding with the popular show, it just might.
@@elisedasvin170 I don't know...Victoria's wedding dress became extremely dated within a few decades. HRH's dress became very dated when silhouettes changed vastly with Dior, Princess Anne's very structured dress is hideous now, etc...they were all beautiful in their time. I think when Princess Charlotte marries someday people will cringe at the Duchess of Cambridge's wedding dress that we marvel at now. Fashion is so fickle.
The only inaccurate thing she said was the place where the wedding took place. although most royal weddings take place at Westminster Abbey Diana and Charles's wedding took place at Saint Paul's Cathedral
The dress worn by Queen Elizabeth to the White House with The First Lady Jackie Kennedy, in my taste it looked frumpy, fussy and those dress straps were added unnecessarily, maybe only to support the Queen's well endowed chest. Jackie was slick, chic and super elegant. Queen looked like a christmas tree, to many ornaments !
I think the Queen ‘s dress suited her small statue and sorry those ornaments are fabulous , I would not say no to one of them .. If you got them wear them especially if you are a queen . They both looked different but great , each in their own way .
I love the pink gown and jacket Princess Margaret actually wore. When I finally saw Princess Diana's dress in person I was surprised at how small it was! Those sleeves always looked massive on TV! No mater I was more shocked at the number of condolence books 😢 that were part of the display.
My favourite gown was the one worn by Princess Margaret. I saw photos of the wedding on TV as a young teen in England. My Mum took my brother & me up to London to visit Westminster Abbey right after and they had a small bouquet on the steps before the alter! I was thrilled. I have always thought that an immature Diana wanted all the bells & whistles on her gown and went a bit overboard so that the gown almost drowned out her own beauty which she discovered as she matured.

I like the lady narrating this video. Clear, not blaring, and her simple tone, mostly not speeding along, therefore making it easier to follow. Soo many videos are too speedy! This was enjoyable to watch. Yay. Ty
Princess Margaret's portrayal was very interesting. I do understand that in real life, her behavior at the Whitehouse was far more subdued, but she did indeed have a fun loving spirit about her. That was accurate.
🇬🇧 I was at Cardiff Art college with David Emanual in 1972/3. David Emanual designed Princess Diana's wedding dress. David Emanual subsequently went to Hornsey Art College if i remember correctly.
The dress by the Emmanuels is nearly identical to the one they made earlier that year for a friend of Charles's, whose wedding C&D attended. It would be easy to draw the conclusion that Charles privately liked that dress, and therefore Diana asked the Emmanuels to make her something like that....just guessing, of course!
She was quite young when she married (19 when she got engaged, 20 on wedding day). I've often noticed very young brides tend to choose gowns that fit their childhood's fantasy of a wedding dress, which is likely what Diana did as well.
Frumpy, bag like, wrinkly. It almost looked like it was pulled out of the garbage. I always thought it was just poor taste of the 80s but maybe your theory is right. Someone intended to make her look less royal. Interesting theory. But jokes on them because she's the people's princess and her wonderful personality made women everywhere want to be just like her. Frumpy dress included. Lol
I actually like much more the blue dress that Queen Elizabeth wore to dinner with the Kennedy's than Jackie's. It was a little old fashion for the 60's, but it is certainly very elegant and proper. I loved it.
Probably because fashions change and it was shortly post ww2 so there wasn't enough money to make a dress that extravagant. tbh I way prefer the Queens dress to Diana's
It has been said Mariah Carey's wedding dress to her first husband was a copy of this..loved both their gowns..too bad both marriages couldn't been happier.
The the Queen's outfit for the investiture of the Prince of Wales (worn by Olivia Colman, 1:01) has been interpreted with a lack of feel for the original line, so that the finished piece ends up looking like a 70s Dr Who costume.
I had to stop the video around 7:20..when they said the dress was old fashioned..I am an American and I must say Queen Elizabeth has rocked every dress she has ever worn..in my opinion she has and always will be a fashion icon. It is a privilege to have been born and grown up in a time when she is queen of Great Britain and I'm not much of Royal watcher.

I really like Edith’s first wedding dress when she was going to marry that cute old man, better than Mary’s wedding dress. If I was doing a 20’s wedding theme wedding I would pick Edith’s dress and veil. I think I would feel more comfortable in it than Mary’s. ☺️

It notably took place at St. Paul's Cathedral, not Westminster Abbey, since the wedding was enormous and meant to befit a first in-line to the throne male. A prince of Wales hadn't been married while he held that title since the reign of Victoria, so St. Paul's was considered the larger and more theatric option.
Oh, I never knew that was why it was at St Paul's instead! Thanks :)
I always felt that Diana looked like a little girl lost in all that fabric on her wedding day, drowning in the taffeta and lace.
Yes it was too much. I watched it that day and thought it was ghastly.
I even thought on her wedding day that was the ugliest dress she could have possibly worn. Ugh!
Personally, I LOVED her wedding dress!
it was beautiful
It did nothing for her figure the shoulder and sleeves looked like they were swallowing her alive. They could have done a lot more with less fabric. It did look like a baggy 1980's prom dress. Lady Diana was as always beautiful but this wasn't quite the custom-fitting and flattering wedding dress one would expect for a royal wedding.
Like it or not, Diana's wedding dress put her on the map. The cathedral is so big and formal, you need something remarkable, and I loved it!
It's hard to put on the screen what you see in real life. That's how it is.
I'm glad it looked better in person. The dress was hideous on tv.
Diana's dress was very well in tune with 1980's style. It had to be big and grand and stand out. It was beautiful dress and it suited Diana.
She was also quite tall, and this could pull off that look beautifully. As a 15 year old watching, I thought it was the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen. I don’t think people can understand what an impact it had.
Also Anne's dress is VERY 1970s...she looked like Leila in a very beautiful way
I thought the Crown dialed down Diana's dress a bit, as if no one would quite have believed it seeing it for the first time now.
This was 1981, before what we think of as 80s style, other than the ruffles which were popular at the time. The dress helped swing fashion toward Big 80s.
I much preferred their toned down version of Diana's dress rather than her actual dress. I was never keen on it and thought it was way too fussy and over the top.
He dress was crumpled together when she was in the carriage so the rumpled look was not a original design also it was the 80s and everything went 📈📈 then
@@hannahhaines2351 I remember watching that wedding - you're right - that dress looked like no one bothered to press it - she looked like she was wrapped up in rolls of toilet paper when she was sitting in that carriage - Diana was gorgeous and did not need so much fussy detail - imo a bad choice - Diana had a great sense of style and most of her fashion choices were spot-on - the wedding gown was not a good look for her
I think her dress being so creased and OTT is a kind of significant/memorable aspect of the wedding, though.
There’s no point in toning down such dress.
@@marian.jablonski54 in the early days of her public life her style was too fussy , all those dreadful collars . But I loved her wedding dress , that wedding was a very exciting time in the 80s
To this day I don’t like princess Diana’s wedding dress, it always feels like the dress is too big and is about to drown her somehow!
Me, too. I think it’s ugly even with all the beading. I’d love to see what the second dress looked like, though, but I thought I heard a few years back, it got lost. How does one lose a huge wedding dress, I wonder?
As a teenager I watched Diana get out of the car with my friends. We were all shocked at how hideous it was. It drowned her and was so crushed. I saw the dress in person at Holyrood Palace and it was just as awful in reality.
@@lornagall8318 She looked like a slice of cake with 10 inches of icing. People don't recall this but that frothy style was not popular when she stepped out into view. It was all dress and no Diana... very much symbolic of the virginal image sought to be portrayed. Although it inspired knock off styles, the overdone looks didn't last long. You could only pull them off if very thin and tall-
She didn't choose that dress! She wanted a very simple, form-fitting gown, but the royal family vetoed that.
I remember liking Fergie's dress better than Diana's gown. It was gorgeous on its own, but it didn't suit her personality; it really was more of a costume.
Diana and Charles were definitely married at St. Paul's Cathedral, not Westminster Abbey
ruclips.net/video/-VCJgGfmeMM/видео.html
It hurts to hear how confidently she says Westminster abbey
And if they get something as basic as this wrong, how much can we trust the rest?
@@helenw6594 it’s not that big of a deal
Yes!! Where are the fact-checkers! This is why youtube, however engaging, is risky if it is the only way you are learning history!!
I believe it was the 80s and enormous baggy things were totally in.
Would LOVE to see one of these for bridgerton- the tightlacing scenes *killed* me, but the silhouettes looked pretty okay
I didn't think tightlacing was a thing until the mid 19th century and even then only for parties.
Also, ladies never wore corsets against their skin- there would have always been an underlayer like a chemise.
@@danielbergonzi7319 Yeah, and there is no reason to tightlace under an empire silhouette that doesn't even show the waist.
@@julietteangeli in Napoleonic France, I've heard some women didn't even wear corsets
Yay another one of these! I'm obsessed with them.
Taffeta wrinkles easily. I like Diana's wedding dress.
@@ashleydowney1222 so does linen and that’s a great fabric too.
Apparently the artist who painted the now King Charles, was a Diana fan. The painting is awful
Raissa is wearing a crogy-pin. A hint the fact that the queen has corgies as pets
Not anymore 😳 they’ve all passed away

I saw on another video that the costume designer for the crown said she purposely wasnt trying to exactly copy Diana's wedding dress. I think because of the way it would look on screen.
I don’t understand that reasoning at all🤔
The one in The Crown doesn't feel 1980s. I'm not sure why, though.
I think I'm the only one who loved Diana's dress. I think it's exquisite in its excess.
nope ur not the only one because i love it too 🥰!!!!
I will always love Diana’s dress for the puffy sleeves. I’m so happy they are back in style. 🥰
I personally would wear it myself, but Diana looked stunning in it!!
I love it too, reminds me of the 17th century.
I loved it.
This is so interesting to watch and could watch Raissa talk about period fashion all day
How wonderful and selfless that, people had the incredible gesture of giving her some of their textile coupons . It shows how much they cared for their (at the time ) princess .
The textile coupons were not transferrable, and she returned them to the original recipients with a handwritten note.
I love Raissa’s videos. So informative and entertaining ⭐️
I never knew a fashion historian could be a career. This is my dream job!
HM The Queen was 5 foot 4 inches.
Am I the only one who kinda likes Princess Diana’s wedding dress besides her?
As a contemporary only in age to Princess Diana I like it too but those sleeves always make me think of Anne of Green Gables' wish for immense puffed sleeves.
@@mollysmith6055 I generally dress kinda witchy, so it’s probably the historical influences that are drawing me to it

Best ep yet. Kudos, Raissa and team.
Poor Diana.... That dress is very dated. But Diana looked beautiful in anything!
for the time it wasn't
@Nicole Nelson No of course, but I think it's a shame she did'nt wear a more timeless dress. ^ ^ I must admit I find hers quite ugly, and unfortunately too much "stuck in the 80's". Usually royal wedding dresses are timeless and can be appreciated through any era, but this one... Nah. 🤗
It used to be dated, but the trends of early 1980s have recently come back around. Puffed sleeves, blouses with big collars... I don't know if it has affected bridal fashion, but coinciding with the popular show, it just might.
Take away the lace and seed pearls and its modern Valentino Haute Couture...
I cant tell you how much i love the crown and history itself, i also love this channel and im exedingly happy about this vidios release
Thank you for the likes i am so happy about it😃
I love the pink gown and jacket Princess Margaret actually wore.
I get so excited every time a new video with Raissa Bretaña goes up!

I like the lady narrating this video. Clear, not blaring, and her simple tone, mostly not speeding along, therefore making it easier to follow. Soo many videos are too speedy! This was enjoyable to watch. Yay. Ty
I love the corgi's brooch, it's awesome
Princess Margaret's portrayal was very interesting. I do understand that in real life, her behavior at the Whitehouse was far more subdued, but she did indeed have a fun loving spirit about her. That was accurate.
🇬🇧 I was at Cardiff Art college with David Emanual in 1972/3. David Emanual designed Princess Diana's wedding dress. David Emanual subsequently went to Hornsey Art College if i remember correctly.
Diana and Charles married in St. Paul's cathedral, not Westminister Abbey.
Always felt that Diana's dress was chosen by frenemies or trolls who where already out to make her look frumpy.
Lmao
The dress by the Emmanuels is nearly identical to the one they made earlier that year for a friend of Charles's, whose wedding C&D attended. It would be easy to draw the conclusion that Charles privately liked that dress, and therefore Diana asked the Emmanuels to make her something like that....just guessing, of course!
She was quite young when she married (19 when she got engaged, 20 on wedding day). I've often noticed very young brides tend to choose gowns that fit their childhood's fantasy of a wedding dress, which is likely what Diana did as well.
@@Lovrofthearts Also, it was very much in line with 80's trends
Frumpy, bag like, wrinkly. It almost looked like it was pulled out of the garbage. I always thought it was just poor taste of the 80s but maybe your theory is right. Someone intended to make her look less royal. Interesting theory. But jokes on them because she's the people's princess and her wonderful personality made women everywhere want to be just like her. Frumpy dress included. Lol
I actually like much more the blue dress that Queen Elizabeth wore to dinner with the Kennedy's than Jackie's. It was a little old fashion for the 60's, but it is certainly very elegant and proper. I loved it.
5:43 It's not a legend. She's said a couple times in interviews that she broke the tiara and had to get a guy to fix it at the last minute.

I wonder why Diana’s dress was more extravagant than the Queen’s
Probably because fashions change and it was shortly post ww2 so there wasn't enough money to make a dress that extravagant. tbh I way prefer the Queens dress to Diana's
Also it was the 80s & things were bigger at that time.
@@triciarose389 Actually, it was only 1981 and Diana's dress was one of the garments that started the "bigger" trend.

It has been said Mariah Carey's wedding dress to her first husband was a copy of this..loved both their gowns..too bad both marriages couldn't been happier.
I was just thinking that. Both were GORGEOUS gowns.
The the Queen's outfit for the investiture of the Prince of Wales (worn by Olivia Colman, 1:01) has been interpreted with a lack of feel for the original line, so that the finished piece ends up looking like a 70s Dr Who costume.
okay but like can we talk about how stunning you are :00000

I had to stop the video around 7:20..when they said the dress was old fashioned..I am an American and I must say Queen Elizabeth has rocked every dress she has ever worn..in my opinion she has and always will be a fashion icon. It is a privilege to have been born and grown up in a time when she is queen of Great Britain and I'm not much of Royal watcher.
She's always been rather dowdy, and I've never, ever heard of her being considered a fashion icon. Jackie was the fashion icon.
