    /* ---- VIDEO INFORMATION ---- */
Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show, I'm your host Paul and this video we're letting the spice flow.
    -
Dune Prophecy is now here and I'm so excited to talk about the series. Over the next six weeks we'll be breaking down the series to talk about everything you need to know. I'm ashamed...and slightly proud to say I've read Dune 7 times this year and I've gone through all the sequels and the house series prequels. I am in love with the universe and can't wait to talk to you guys about it.
Make sure you're subscribed so you don't miss the breakdowns and hit the thumbs up if you enjoy it.
If you want a catchup on the films after this video we also have a 2 hour indepth analysis of both parts.
However what I like about the series is that you don't really need to know any of that. Dune Prophecy is a prequel to the story and it takes place 10,000 years prior.
Now in the Dune-iverse years are counted as being AG. This is after the spacing guild was formed and they created space travel.
No one knows exactly how that translates to our time as the appendicies state slightly different dates. The universe also works on a standard calendar so theyre able to account for all the different planets. Earth takes 24 hours to spin on it's axis and thus thats a day on our planet. Somewhere like Arrakis would be completely different so they had to come up with a standarised clock. The Universal calendar is actually 20 hours shorter than an earth year and they also dont mention leap years. So over thousands of years this mounts up and Dune part 1 is roughly at 23,000 AD.
Dune part 1 takes place in roughly 10191 so with this being 10,000 years prior you get us at rougly 191. We do get some text later on that places this 10,148 years before his birth but no exact specific year is given.

My theory is the assassinations were due to both victims being regular spice users. My theory is Desmond has somehow been granted the power to manipulate spice & it was then simple for him (even across time & space) to burn their spice-infused bodies from the inside out.
I think there’s clearcut evidence Kasha had been taking spice. Basically, she’s implausibly young! We first see Kasha as one of the young sisters allied to Valya's & Tula's faction. Accordingly, she belongs to their generation. But when we jump forward 30 years, the grown-up Kashs clearly looks like she’s from a younger generation than Valya & Tula. If you don’t buy this, consider the actors’ ages: Emily Watson (Valya) = age 57 ; Olivia Williams (Tula) = age 56 ; Jihae Kim (Kasha) = age 35. There’s no way a prestige production like this would make such a basic casting error! It is well established in the Dune universe that regular spice use improves health and can radically extend life expectancy.
There’s also several more circumstantial arguments supporting Kasha taking spice:
    * Kasha is by far the most important of all the Truthsayers - both in her role as adviser to the Emperor & in persuading the sole heir to join the sisterhood. Strategically, it makes sense for Kasha to be given first call (ahead of even Valya) to whatever spice the sisterhood held to improve her powers & so make her even more indispensable to House Corrino.
    * We saw an early (maybe the first) use of the Voice by a proto-Bene Gesserit. In the later Dune sagas, many Bene Gesserit are regular spice users. It would make sense for us to be also shown one of the first examples of a proto-Bene Gesserit taking spice.
    * The episode slyly suggests the sisterhood were linked to the spice thefts on Arrakis.
    * Kasha’s prescient dream is consistent with someone regularly taking spice.
I admit the case for Pruitt taking spice is much weaker - but isn't non-existant. For a start, we can assume it would be his ruthless, risk-taking father illicitly giving Pruitt spice. Pruitt looks to be the sole heir to House Richese and, as noted above, regular spice use improves health. House Richese appear to be the wealthiest of all the houses & procuring a regular supply of spice would be nothing to them in the context of potentially protecting their heir.
We could also view Pruitt illegal AI robot toy - undoubtedly given to him by his father - as evidence of his father’s risky (and wildly inappropriate) attitude of giving his son access to anything that might tactically augment his upbringing.
Lastly, when Desmond fatefully meets Pruitt alone in a corridor, Pruitt explains he is there because he has had a bad dream. This could well be inferred he had - in parallel with Kasha - a spice-induced prescient dream. However, as an untrained young child, he was much less well equipped than Kasha to appreciate the significance of the dream.

The Sorceresses of Rossak could cook people alive (telekinetically), though they were focused on thinking machines during the Jihad. Also, Valya and Tula are aware of their Harkonnen lineage and consistently hunted Vorian Atreides for retribution in the books. In the book that took place before the show ("Navigators of Dune") they were convinced they finally killed him... Heavy Spoilers needs to research the lore better.

A lot of youtubers that talk about Dune haven't read enough of the books. I think I heard somewhere in this video that the Harkonnens ran during the Butlerian Jihad?? No the Harkonnens(Tercero Xavier Harkonnen) were the heroes of the Jihad. Vorian Atreides, the son of Titan Agamemnon was on the side of the machines, and that is why the feud between the houses started. Harkonnens were the good guys.

    • @Highlander0689
      @Highlander0689 2 месяца назад +3

@@Junglist619000 To be fair, Vorian Atreides switched sides and became a hero for mankind. Xavier Harkonnen sacrificed his reputation as a war hero by assassinating Iblis Ginjo, who switched sides like Vorian Atreides but became an corrupt politician. This was a while before the conflict ended, however. What really tanked the Harkonnen's reputation is when Xavier's grandson, Abulurd Harkonnen, defied Vorian Atreides at The Battle of Corrin. The situation was complex since the machines had hostages. That's why Abulurd was reluctant to attack. As a result he was branded a coward and a traitor and exiled.

Hya Paul, Excellent breakdown, and so fast as always!
Loved the details and the background you provide, as for the take on this premiere episode, I kinda did not mind that it has yet to have blewn the roof off.
For me I took the series about the newly formed bene geserit story to be mysterious , and being 10k years apart from the DUNE movies / book events not much to tie into that story, except for the visions that we keep guessing are for AI or Paul.
I am hyped and looking forward to the future episodes, and hoping they will unravel the story at a steady pace, and surprise us at some turns, that would be a joy to see.
The lore , the costumes, the world building, the desing, the visuals all look stunning, the cast seems spot on for the main characters, so I am full of optimism!
Just like to your breakdowns, always deep, always gives additional info, background makes the viewing / reviewing experience better!

It would imply that ynez or her womb are "rotten" in some way. whether this be because ynez herself will become a problem or her actions will ultimately betray her goals (seemingly to control the universe with the BG). Enjoyed this much more on second viewing. I think I'd foolishly gone into it hoping for hour long episodes of a Denis Villeneuve film, which was obviously never going to happen. Those films have arguably the best director, director of photography, composer, VFX artists, production designers, sound department etc. working in cinema today. As well as, of course, a healthy serving of some of the most charismatic and good looking Hollywood stars of recent years, not to mention they're shot in IMAX format for BIG screens. Prophecy is a TV show with a fraction of the time and budget and while HBO have a really solid track record of producing some of the greatest shows of all time, they were never going to be able to match the films in terms of spectacle.
Gave my head a shake before watching a second time and got a lot more out of it. I hope HBO doesn't take it off the rails. Kasha's death has me concerned that they will.

    Awesome breakdown, as per usual!
My Theory: Hart (Hayt? Coincidence?) is from the Bene Tleilax. Could be a ghola, but also, would be kind of cool if he turned out to be a Face Dancer.

The flying lights are not robotic. They operate on suspension fields they house bacteria that give off light.

Arafel in the Dune universe represents the limit or boundary of prescient sight-a point beyond which even those with prophetic abilities cannot see. It’s akin to an opacity or a “cloud darkness,” much like trying to look through frosted glass and being unable to discern what’s on the other side. Prescience in Dune is deeply tied to vision and foresight, allowing characters like Paul Atreides and Leto II to anticipate and predict future events.
When Leto II mentions that the Ixians couldn’t create Arafel, he doesn’t imply they were attempting to manufacture prescient abilities or a literal object called Arafel. Instead, he means that the Ixians were incapable of developing technology that could lead to humanity’s extinction-an event that would effectively end the future and, by extension, prescient sight. His reign as the God Emperor was a time of absolute control, creating a “fog of war” where others could not see beyond his rule, even the powerful Bene Gesserit became his servants.
The widespread use of the Tarot introduces chaos and unpredictability, clouding Paul’s prescient vision. It causes people to act in unforeseen ways, making it difficult for him to anticipate future events. This illustrates how randomness and collective actions can limit even the most potent prescient abilities.
In essence, Arafel symbolizes the ultimate boundary of foresight-a looming sense of doom or significant upheaval that is both unsettling and impenetrable. Understanding why this limit exists can be disturbing, as it often suggests an impending catastrophe. The Ixians weren’t creating Arafel itself; rather, their actions had the potential to bring about conditions that would impose this final limit on prescient sight.

ALso.... bene gesserit in the future are trained to resist poison.... we might be learning why. Is it really poision? Lots of mystery is great.

I agree that episode 1 didn't leave me excited for this season. I like the characters, and the premis, but I was left feeling like I could easily forget to watch episode 2 next week.

If you look really close at Valya's eye during the vision she sees in the embers, the enbers turn into what I think looks like ships. Possibly a thinking machine fleet due to the overwhelming numbers.

Well we created space skynet so thus we could destroy them. The worms were created by nature, ideologically, a force that is above humanity so it tracks the worms are hard to kill. Like microorganisms
