@@Nick-oo5lh Yeah, a lot of people seem to miss the point that the prophecy was manufactured and forced to become true. Channi was the only one who didnt drink the "Messiah" koolaid. The books went into Paul's struggle with essentially "playing God' The ending isn't a "good guy wins" ending like people think. Same! I had chills at the fact that the theater was completely full at 3:00 pm on a Friday! This movie saved big cinema imo…The way Denis is able to bring you into these worlds is something special! Going again with some other friends in a week 😂
Denis had to make so many difficult choices in order to make the films both satisfying to those who know the books and also approachable for those who don’t. I’ve been thinking about Dune in comparison to the Lord of the Rings. Both are excessively challenging books to adapt to the screen but Jackson had the advantage of a very clear and direct core story of good versus evil. Dune is so nuanced and thrives in the shades of gray. I feel that Denis was in a position where he had to add contrast and push elements like the Harkonnens into more of a black and white portrayal in order to keep the story coherent for newcomers. I would have wanted more of the gray, but overall he did a masterful job in a near impossible situation. Bravo Denis!
Denis is a genius.....no doubt. BUT, Greig Fraser deserves almost, if not as much credit as Villeneuve. his cinematography is unmatched in the business today. he's also the same guy who did "The Batman".
Denis is so smart that he took a perfect story and RUINED IT by putting modern political themes into someone else's work. Dune works because Frank Herbert was a great author, and NOT because Denis used 17 Race & Gender swaps to endear himself with people who hate him.
Non-book reader here, but definitely going to start after watching Dune part two. I suspect all the babies will play a major role in the next one, Zendaya’s being the actual Mahdi.
So, I just watched Dune: Part Two in IMAX today. (I just got out.) I was blown away. I didn't eat or drink my food because the cinema kept me locked into the story. Mechanically, everything came together for Paul, and I was in awe at how everything worked out up to the war. I haven't seen cinema like this since Harry Potter. This is how you tell a story about a messiah or the chosen one. Everyone needs to see this film. Everyone.
Clearly, you're being judgmental and aren't accustomed to the tendency of filmmakers to make changes from the source material for the purpose of cinematic effect.@@RobPerreault
Congratulations, you fell prey to good ol fashioned religious indoctrination done very well. BUt it's ok because that is the movie's undertone: the dangers of religious zealotry and mesianic cult complexes invented by people who control politics from the shadow.
Did anyone else notice actor Everett McGill (the 1984 Dune's Stilgar) as the Sardukaur leader in the throne room when the Fremen break in? Great cameo!!!
@gregfulton2539 ya when u go, when the Sardukaur are lined up in front of the emperor as the fremen are breaking in, there is a Sardukaur leader walking to the door. He gets a great close up of his face. He is not in the credits so I think it's an Easter egg. It's a hard face to miss, very distinctive.
1:32 I feel like this comment is completely false right? Duke Leto went to Arrakis because the emperor was taking the planet away from the Harkonnens and “giving” it to the Atreides. The first movie showed multiple times how Leto didn’t really want to go there and was worried they were being setup by the emperor. I’m not sure how you came to the conclusion that Duke Leto wanted to go there?!?….. once he was given the planet, he definitely wanted to use the Fremen and “desert power” to their advantage….. but he didn’t really want to be going there in the first place.
@@kanaric except that it does matter in this case. There is a reason so many reject this betrayal of the Baron’s characterization. Frank was already dead, so he didn’t change his intention
To me the first movie was a 7/10. This one is a lot better but I think people are overhyping it. I'd give it an 8/10. If the conclusion in Messiah rounds up the trilogy well I might give Part 2 a retrospective 8.5/10. Paul becomes hard to root for since he's just on another level once he drinks the Water of Life and that makes everything feel like less of a struggle and therefore kind of trivial.
I believe the anti-climactic ending is by design. Paul gains god like powers and achieves victory through incredible violence. This should not feel glorious but disturbing. Frank Herbert intended to present a story that highlights the terrible cost of vengeance and extremism.
Can’t believe they made that popcorn bucket and didn’t immediately stop themselves after seeing it like “we just made a giant fleshlight…cancel all production”
I had three friends that tried to get that popcorn bucket but it was sold out so clearly they were doing something right lol. It’s freaking wild that got passed but also hilarious
7:52 no, it’s not that there was a prophecy and Bene Gesserit try to shoehorn Paul into that prophecy. Instead it is that the Bene Gesserit have created a story of a savior then purposely went about creating that savior through specific breeding and training. It’s like the Bene Gesserit created the prophecy as a goal and worked toward that goal for thousands of years.
Watched last night. A bit conflicted. As a move experience, it was fantastic! Timothee was so strong as a lead. He was just excellent. I got chills a few times. However, I did not like the heavy story line with Jessica talking to Aria. Not sure why that was included. The compressed timeline- the war was years not months,Aria played a key role in the last battle. The ending with Chauni walking away 😤 she plays an important role in Paul’s life. so honestly, not liking some of the changes in major story-lines from the book. But as a stand alone sequel, judging away from the book, it was an EXCELLENT MOVIE.
Paul did say at some point after he gained his prescience that Chani would forgive him, so there's always that. They compressed the story for convenience and a more streamlined experience for the general audience. I was also kind of disappointed by Alia's exclusion but she would have made the movie way too dense and exposition heavy, they needed to focus on Paul's story and war against the Imperium and Harkonnen's. Plus it would be hard to have a 3 year old trying to talk like a wise old lady
I agree. Chani's character is much stronger than they portrayed her. And I dont recall the belief difference between the north and south. The only thing the Fremen seemed unsure of was the unnerving presence of Alia. Who of which became a fierce warrior herself.
I didn't read the complete book, but I feel the whole vengeance arc of Paul was a good replacement for a random 3 yo killing grown men. Using Jessica's pregnancy to show the pass of time was a good idea, and she and her daughter talking to each other was sinister. Dune is a very comvoluted and political book, so obviously adapting it to the big screen will take some elements away. The story arc of Jessica was pretty cool, showing this obsessive side of her wanting to control the Fremen through the prophecy. I was her way to prove to the Reverend Mother that she was wrong, and Jessica indeed gave birth to the One. Chani was okay for the most part. Her moments of rebellion against the idea of the Messiah were great, especially the scene where Jessica forces her to fulfit the prophecy. You said it. It's an excellent movie and sequel. And a very good adaptation overall.
The one thing they left out that got me was how Leto taught Paul that marriage was a tool for politics. That was a big plot point, and Jessica told Chani that even though Irulan was his political wife, that the ones that were called concubine was where the Dukes heart truly lay. It would have help to not make Chani look so scorned at the end.
As for 'and he rides a sandworm the first time' That is no big woop. That is why Stilgar gives him that speech about being simple, taking no risks and they know that he is brave. Teenage Fremen are worm-riders, this is his last 'test' as far as 'he is young, he can learn our ways' The path to manhood, being a Fremen. In the books Stilgar even lays into him about how many risks he took getting to/on the worm, reminding him again teenagers do it. On the OTHER hand, him calling a 'grandfather' worm... that's in the prophecy.
@@heavyspoilerssame!!! I couldn't see it in IMAX for my first watch but I already have tickets for the IMAX version for this weekend! I am excited!!!!
I think that both The Creator and Godzilla Minus One both showed what is possible with smart budgets and planning and Dune Two just elevated the genre.. I haven’t been able to step thinking about it since watching it last night n would love to see Messiah in imax in the near future 🤩
one detail you missed: when paul kills the baron, he kills him by stabbing him in the left side of his neck and he says "you die like an animal". both of these details refer to the gom jabbar test and paul is showing he's a superior being than his harkonnen ancestors. while there are several differences from the book and movie, most of the changes in the film are superior to me since they show the deeper theme better than the book did.
I didn't like the changes. They still had his sister in the womb. They made chani into a pouty little girl. They had Jessica using the voice on everyone, when I was deeply forbidden lol
@@GeminiMaddnezz864lyfe i love the book but most of the changes made the movie a better piece of fiction than the book. chani is not a pouty girl, she sees the prophecy for what it always has been: a tool to mobilize a desperate people to a cause that leads to their demise. also the fact that there are groups amongst the fremen who don't believe in the prophecy is much more realistic and respectful of them than herbert's depiction of the fremen as a monolith.
Frank Herbert states it clearly in Dune that the Baron is fat. It is due to a curse put on him by the bene gesserit I believe. "As [Baron Vladimir Harkonnen] emerged from the shadows, his figure took on dimension - grossly and immensely fat. And with subtle bulges beneath folds of his dark robes to reveal that all this fat was sustained partly by portable suspensors harnessed to his flesh. He might weigh two hundred Standard kilos in actuality, but his feet would carry no more than fifty of them."
I love how they portray weakness in a leader with Batista’s character constantly yelling. He then has to kiss the feet of Feyd-Rotha. Then at the end, Paul is constantly yelling as a leader. Very telling that he isn’t ready for leading like this. Emperor was correct about his father leading from his heart, and Paul is the same. It’ll most likely be his downfall. Can’t wait to see Zendaya’s character come back, most likely birthing the actual Mahdi.
Oh he yelled! Yelling is bad my woke communist indoctrination says... Dude, really wake up already, revolutions aren't done by old ladies tea talking... Rage isn't silly or smart but is needed if you want to change something, get it? The STABLISHMENT doesn't want anything to change so they preached you against rage. INDOCTRINATED YOU TO HAVE A NEGATIVE FEELING WHEN READING CAPS LIKE THE ONE YOU FEELING, EVEN WHEN I WRITE THIS CALMLY AND LAY DOWN THEIR LOGIC FOR YOU.
huge disappointment that they didn't show any Guild Navigators. It's a powerful section of the book when they are alerted to Paul's prescience and his ability and willingness to end Spice production.
Completely missing the point here. Jessica has the genetic memories of her mother. So she sees her mother get impregnated by the Baron. It takes two to make a child.
I was trying to figure out what was bugging me and I figured it out after watching your video: the lack of the time jump / condensing the time down. The war was like a two year endeavor and instead was a few months. By doing that the plot got really weakened: 1) it would have been more obvious that “oh hey right after we wiped out the Atreides some new guy shows up a few weeks later, I bet it’s the same guy!” 2) we lost a lot of emotional connection with Paul and Chani by not having Leto at Sietch Tabr (and also her taking the role of concubine). 3) Gurney and the smugglers felt too rushed for his relationship with them. 4) the birth of Alia (which is how we know it was only a few months, since in Part One she says she only knew for a few weeks). Alia wasn’t an abomination due to her powers but because she was pre-born (having full consciousness and access to genetic memory in the womb )and
Bingo! It was a great movie, but as it started closing in on the end, I started falling away from it. Chani riding away (because instead of understanding his political duty, she is angry he is becoming this prophecy like he said he wouldn't), Alia not being born, and Paul killing the Baron - it all rubbed me the wrong way and I found myself disappointed. But, yeah, it was all due to a (frankly) unnecessary time crunch. With movie lengths now, they could have easily added another half hour (or less really) to make the timeline right and no one would have batted an eye.
I loved that the movie didn’t feel the need to show everything. After Paul kills the Barron he gives a calm order to his men… give the Barron’s body to the desert, kill the Sardaukar, and bring the prisoners. Later we get a quick shot of the body in the sand covered in ants and then the prisoners are led in to the room Paul is in. No big fight to kill the guards, no dragging the body out just move forward and let the audience fill in the blank.
Saw it last night. Great film. The only problems I had were the weakness of the Saudarkar troops and that awkward look Chani gives after she kills 5 or 6 of them in about 6 seconds. Lol
I think it's implied in the books that the Fremen were the best fighting force in the universe, 2nd being the Saudarkar and Atriedes. The latter 2 being weaker because of the relative peace in the universe. Less opportunities to hone your skills in combat like the Fremen had. Also, I believe Chani is related to either Stilgar or Jameis can't remember..So she's not an average Fremen warrior.
Yep. But with how DV has taken the storyline and altered things, many start to theorize (in Dune thread) that the end of the 3rd movie is either - - - Paul walking to the desert to die like Fremen OR he will take over the Golden Path.
@@tracys169I want a proper adaptation of Children of Dune so I hope it's Paul walking out into the desert. Leto II is rightfully the God Emperor and he deserves to have his story told, almost as equally as Paul and Dune. I know we'll never get God Emperor but it's very wishful thinking and I feel Dune, Messiah and Children of Dune are all part of a trilogy, so it would be a disservice to not give Leto II his own story.
@@RobertK1993 Dennis is only doing Dune and Dune Messiah, so we'll never get an adaptation done with same care and attention to detail as we've had with Dune Part 1 and 2 for Children of Dune (at least with Dennis at the helm). Dennis would realistically have to do these 3 books as either 6 films or 4 (if he's ignoring Children of Dune). I'm sure he's going to make Messiah 3 hours long but he might also split it in two. God Emperor is very cerebral and full of talking/political scheming. Lots of philosophy and pondering. I don't think we'll get it but it's very wishful thinking on my part.
The only thing that sticks in my craw is the nefarious change in both Jessica and Paul, in the source material she actively tries to discourage Paul's ascension to Messiah and Paul isn't as manipulative and machiavellian. Overall though, I have the biggest nerd-gasm ever, BADASS
The change of aria in the womb is tasteful. Same with paul being the one to kill baron. I didnt like how chani was portrayed. The black sun was a cool effect. The explosions were rumbling, scale of the worms and machines was immense. Great movie. Especially when stilgar reasons away pauls rejection of being the mahdi lolol
Chani was kind of too submissive in the book imo so I didn’t mind that he used her as a conscientious piece to Paul’s questioning of his own path & the trouble uncertain futures could bring and an overall diversity of thought and beliefs among the the north and south of the fremen
At 13:20 you mention that Harkonnen sounds Russian - in fact it seems more Finnish than anything. They are all very pale, they love knives, the Baron's medical treatment involves a sort of tar sauna etc. These are all very Finnish attributes
Sladering? Nah, More like damn flattering imo 😅. A small 6million people country, being one of the dominant Houses in The universe. Slander? Nah, tho many from harkonnen are sociopathic, deviant, and just not too appealing. Apart from those, none taken :D Ja mä oon Suomesta:)
I watched Dune on a whim via appletv like a month ago. Watched Dune 2 in theaters immediately after and have been immersed ever since. Everyone involved with this project is phenomenal. Havent been so pumped about a movie/story in a LONG time.
Enjoyed the movie a lot. Can't wait for part 3. The only issues I had was the way time flowed in the middle of the film. I don't think the scenes conveyed much in that sense, you just kind of had to know the scenes were moving at a faster timeline than what had been shown up to the part where Paul started training as a fremen. Maybe Paul doing a monologue of how much time he's spent with that group of fremen. The flow just felt off, like scenes just put in random order. I figured it has a lot to do with the movie length so I understand.
Great video. Just saw Dune Part 2 yesterday on IMAX with my 15 year old son. For me, who have read all Frank Herbert's Dune books, this movie is both a cinematic work of art and the best sf book adaptation of all times. This is a dream come true. For my son, who does not read sf, he was totally mesmerized with the power of the story, images, characters, graphics. This shows that Denis Villeneuve has been visionary in his ambition to adapt a sf classic and making it appealing to generations of readers and non readers. I truly wish he will consider continuing on the adaptation of the remaining Dune novels, even though I understand it will be a studio / director battle difficult to win in some aspects.
What the hell are you talking about that women are not seen as equal to men in the Duniverse? The Bene Gesserit is more or less the ultimate power in all of this universe. They are pulling the string behind everything. EVERYTHING. They had been in power behind the scenes for over 10,000 years. The Duniverse in not ruled by the patriarchy. Leto never married Jessica for political reasons. She was his Duchess, in all but name, and Jessica understood that. She held no animosity towards Leto for this. In the Fremen culture the Reverend Mothers were revered and held great influence. To say that this universe was controlled by the patriarchy and women have very little control over anything is ridiculous.
Great Vid! Love the cuts and editing too. Some savage stuff in there. I 'wtf'd' out loud with the two girls 1 cup drop. Bravo dude! Probably one of the best films I've ever seen. Thanks again for the entertainment. 👌
Spot on review HS. I absolutely loved this film. I'll definitely be going to see it again at least once more. If there's a better film out this year i'd be amazed.
i really enjoyed the first one. don't know why this one didn't really connect with me- it just never got there. but i'm glad for everyone who had a great time with it, and i still look forward to seeing what comes with the third installment.
I think it was very thematically different than the 1st and not what I was expecting. Kind of threw me off but I still really liked it. Here’s hoping a 2nd viewing improves your impression.
I want them to go all the way , the sisterhood just has too much latent potential it would just be leaving too much money on the table not to explore it. The jihad is also a good excuse to explore the empire , the tleilaxu and Ixians etc They should go as far as they can
Great comments. But if they do Dune messiah, alotta fans may be disappointed. I thought Messiah was interesting but some what of a let down. But will see.
Actually, the reason he’s able to defeat Jami’s so easily is because he saw the fight in his premonitions. they probably didn’t make that very clear because they kept showing his death which was also trying to build up tension for the viewer cause nobody wants to film when everything is figured out beforehand
In the book, the Butlerian Jihad wasn’t between man and machines. It was against men who used machines to enslave the rest of humanity. The “Terminator” crap was Kevin J Anderson fanfic.
I am still trying to parse how I feel about this movie. It's not faithful... but at the same time, it somehow is more faithful to the book than the book is. It's aggressively, succinctly, capturing the message and the story. It's changing things but I'm not sure that those absences or alterations actually hurt the story. I'm really confused.
I saw this last night at the 10 pm show at the big Burbank 16 theater here and it was truly a piece of cinema to behold I mean there was moments were I had chills just because of how well the visuals and sound design & music fit. It’s of course very well acted my only criticism is the pacing at times but it’s minor and to be fair this isn’t a easy book to bring to the big screen at all. I have no idea how Denis will do Messiah but I have faith he could pull it off
Outright hated what they did to Chani - took all her actual and honorable roles, took her heritage (no longer the daughter of Leet), took her son, and made her unlikeable and angry.
Seen on imax in metrocentre. Sound design was amazing. From the utter bass when they're mining spice or the worms to the sheer silence of just blades clanging during the knife fight. Amazeballs
I've loved this story since I was a sci-fi bookworm kid in the 70s, so I'm fully aware of the differences here. An excellent adaptation can be forgiven many things, and I do, but just as a movie fan I had to ask myself: Why is the giant battle for Arakeen primarily a knife fight?
@@PuffyCloud_aka_puffeclaude the biggest question I have is why does the movie act like Paul had control of the freeman? Like the send them to paradise and the landsraad not agreeing like justifies the Jihad. That’s a creative choice. I hope he explains like just as a book reader. Because he never had control of his army and the landsraad immediately like before the emperor even stepped down. Amazing experience as a movie. And I’m the worst type of book loyalist. Like seriously annoying type but even I loved it. I had to listen to the interviews about Chani to understand. But I hope he explains why the landsraad said no. IMO it justifies the horror, or it could to some viewers. What a chilling ending. Watching the joy on their faces after Paul tells them that. It made me and my husband both just like freeze. Great experience. Because it’s been years since we left a theater feeling that way.
@@Gubble-oq6dn then why read my long ass comment 😂😂😂 And if you’re new to the dune fandom then you’re gonna see a lot of us. Either way happy you were able to get into the dune universe, it’s awesome.
I don't like them changing the fact that Paul only used the nukes on the Shield Wall, not the Harkonnens, and certainly not the Spice. He was going to use changed Water of Life on a Pre-Spice mass to disrupt the cycle. He skirted the law but very purposely didn't break it. Chani was just as happy to be concubine as Jessica was and encouraged the marriage to Irulan. She knew just how to keep her in her place anyway. It feels like they took that agency away from her. Chani was a total BAMF and sister wives were an acceptable practice in the Fremen culture. I'm confused on how the timeline is going to go if Alia wasn't born by the end, it takes 2 years for Muad'Dib to be ready to take over the Empire. He has to have time to teach the Fremen the Weirding way. It's so weird the things they change for what seems like no reason and ends up changing a lot of the story.
IMO the problem is that only adapting Messiah will end with a big cliffhanger and people would be begging for Children of Dune to see where it all goes. Again IMO the story should end with the horror of Paul's son Leto II the God Emperor himself and the actual death of Paul. That would be more of realization of the authors intent on making a story about the dangers of enlightened messianic prophetic leaders.
Very nicely analyzed. I agree in total. I can say that even my wife not being in SciFi at all got immersed within both Dune films. And DO SEE IT in IMAX theaters: The sound will blow you away and gives an additional dimension and feel for explosions, the massive machinery and so one. Its perfectly done and made the theater shake. Brilliant!
As a self confessed Dune elitist, part one and part two have been the best adaptations to date. There was a lot cut from the books and some changes but all were in service to the story. Denis is a powerhouse and each movie proves more and more how good he is and how much he has grown as a director and he was pretty frickin’ amazing to begin with. I am pumped for Dune messiah and that concludes Paul’s story. Book wise , elitist remember, only the ones by Frank are canon in my head (and to be honest Children of Dune got a bit over the top at the end). Loved, this movie, want to see it again, can’t wait until I can watch part one and two back to back
Shame Villeneuve is stopping at Dune: Messiah as I felt that book was quite weak compared to Dune. But considering how weird it gets I can see why he made that choice.
@@ethancoster1324True Leto II is the Messiah, although the golden path is something he strives for, he kinda stumbles, but eventually it all turns out the best for humanity. Kinda the point. Atreides! Atreides! Atreides!
Messiah is where the movies should and will end. Anything after that, not even Villeneuve could adapt those stories into something that would be appealing to the general audiences
The original book was in three parts, and Messiah is just part four, for the most part. Much of it was already written when the first book was released. But everything after that was obviously written because the publisher wanted to sell more books. I can't imagine God Emperor being made into anything anyone would want to watch. Hell, I couldn't even finish reading the book. I barely finished Children. I loved the first two books, but things went seriously off the rails after that.
Herbert conceived of Dune / DM and CoD as a complete cycle loosely based on classic Greek tragic trilogy the Oresteia by Aeschylus. The Oresteia is a sequence about the rise and fall of a great King and how his children pick up the pieces of the kingdom after. The Oresteia follows the ancient Greek heroic House of "Atreus" and deals with issues of revenge, vendetta and fate.
@@charlesajones77 "everything after that was obviously written because the publisher wanted to sell more books" lol No. Just because you couldn't finish it doesn't make Herbert an opportunistic hack. "I finally just took out my ideas about how long it "should" be. I started building from the back. Where does it have to go? So parts of Children of Dune and Dune Messiah were already written before I completed Dune." - Frank Herbert "The Sparks Have Flown" from The Maker of Dune - Insights of a Master of Science Fiction.
Paul killing Jammis was a good forshadowing into his character as a young man. There a side of him like his father, who first thinks and acts out of kindness and mercy.... But then theres a scared little boy who is hungry for control that took over when he was being peer pressured..... 😂 Great foreshadowing
Saying women have no power in Dune is flat out incorrect. Bene Gesserit seem to be more powerful than swords. What you are actually saying is they don't have the same power men do.
He doesn't understand Dune lore. The Benes have a balance power with the rest of the Imperium, it plays off the ying & yang balance of life philosophy, they used their wombs as weapons for political control as the men with swords & force fields, It's thoughtfully masterful.
"Make sure you are Dune your part Too" dude, you brought it back. LOL another great breakdown from the Heavy Spoilers Team. you guys always hit home runs. big fan, apreciate you guys. 10/10
Actually, Jessica can't access her genetic memory of her father, the baron. Women don't have a Y chromosome, so they can only access their female ancestors' memories. That's part of the reason the Bene Gesserit want to make the Quizatz Haderach, because a male has an X and a Y, and could access all of their ancestors, male and female. That's why it's called "the place you dare not look" or "the taking place" (male), as opposed to "the giving place" (female).
There were moments in this movie that may have been the most immersive movie experience I've ever had. There's a part where _I_ felt like _I_ was riding the sandworm. The cinematography is just crazy
Paul is not the Messiah! Chani DIES giving birth to Paul’s twins who are pre born. One of the twins (Leto) becomes the god king. There’s a spoiler for all you heretics who didn’t read the books.

My biggest worry for Dune Messiah. Sometimes that story feels very incomplete because you’re supposed to read Messiah and children of Dune kind of back to back type of deal and I really hope they don’t end Messiah on a cliffhanger because I really want to see children of dune. Same! I had chills at the fact that the theater was completely full at 3:00 pm on a Friday! This movie saved big cinema imo…The way Denis is able to bring you into these worlds is something special! Going again with some other friends in a week 😂
Best movie I've ever seen, I think.
He failed at both.

Denis is a genius.....no doubt.
BUT, Greig Fraser deserves almost, if not as much credit as Villeneuve. his cinematography is unmatched in the business today. he's also the same guy who did "The Batman".
Every shot I want as a wallpaper… it was an absolute beautiful film to just look at
Yep - even Roger Deakins acknowledged Batman should have won best cinematography that year.
Denis is so smart that he took a perfect story and RUINED IT by putting modern political themes into someone else's work. Dune works because Frank Herbert was a great author, and NOT because Denis used 17 Race & Gender swaps to endear himself with people who hate him.

Everyone.

Did anyone else notice actor Everett McGill (the 1984 Dune's Stilgar) as the Sardukaur leader in the throne room when the Fremen break in? Great cameo!!!

The Baron even says it: when is a gift not a gift?
Wrong take indeed.
Yeah like Leto knows straight up that they WILL be attacked. Just thought he’d have more time. No one wanted to go.
The bit about the Baron being cursed is a huge point of contention on the fandom. That was a Brian Herbert retcon not Frank’s original intention
Brian's crap is worthless. I can't stand what he and KJA published.

@@kanaric except that it does matter in this case. There is a reason so many reject this betrayal of the Baron’s characterization. Frank was already dead, so he didn’t change his intention
I just realized that 2 of the main characters in No Country for Old Men are both in this movie
Also, shooting the Geidi Prime, the way they did provided a great visual contrast to Arrakis. Explaining it with a black sun was brilliant.
I don't remember Paul's story being a happy one.
Agree. Had the same feeling. The ending differs from the book and I missed Alia in the ending.
My thoughts exactly. Def gonna watch it a few more times. I’m sure it will grow on me, but the diversions from the book kind of bummed me out.
You know it’s funny the prophecy is just propaganda but then he ends up doing the outlandish things in the prophecy… self fulfilling prophecy really

one detail you missed: when paul kills the baron, he kills him by stabbing him in the left side of his neck and he says "you die like an animal". both of these details refer to the gom jabbar test and paul is showing he's a superior being than his harkonnen ancestors.
while there are several differences from the book and movie, most of the changes in the film are superior to me since they show the deeper theme better than the book did.
Love that! Great catch.
God that scene was so powerful! Revenge for his father, and the music was so damn good!!!
@@GeminiMaddnezz864lyfe I'm with you, I still prefer the book and the sci-fi miniseries myself.
That thing with the Baron being fat because something happen to him is just a Brian Herbert thing. I cant remember that in the six orginal books.
8:10 Jessica's ancestral memories do NOT include those of the baron as she only has access to female memories.
True… yet Alia is not that limited
Completely missing the point here. Jessica has the genetic memories of her mother. So she sees her mother get impregnated by the Baron. It takes two to make a child.
So wait Jessica’s dad is the baron? Missed that part I did get they were related
But all Reverend Mothers shared the same memories. So she would be privy to the facts of her conception.
Slight issue. Jessica, and all other Reverend Mothers only get the genetic memories of the females of their lines.

I was trying to figure out what was bugging me and I figured it out after watching your video: the lack of the time jump / condensing the time down.
The war was like a two year endeavor and instead was a few months.
By doing that the plot got really weakened:
1) it would have been more obvious that “oh hey right after we wiped out the Atreides some new guy shows up a few weeks later, I bet it’s the same guy!”
2) we lost a lot of emotional connection with Paul and Chani by not having Leto at Sietch Tabr (and also her taking the role of concubine).
3) Gurney and the smugglers felt too rushed for his relationship with them.
4) the birth of Alia (which is how we know it was only a few months, since in Part One she says she only knew for a few weeks). Alia wasn’t an abomination due to her powers but because she was pre-born (having full consciousness and access to genetic memory in the womb )and
Whyd u out the spoiler at the end (idc about spoilers)

Lol
Ok I thought it was just me lol. The Saudakar in the 1st Dune were explained as highly skilled fighters but here they were so easy to kill
I think it's implied in the books that the Fremen were the best fighting force in the universe, 2nd being the Saudarkar and Atriedes. The latter 2 being weaker because of the relative peace in the universe. Less opportunities to hone your skills in combat like the Fremen had.

I am still trying to parse how I feel about this movie. It's not faithful... but at the same time, it somehow is more faithful to the book than the book is. It's aggressively, succinctly, capturing the message and the story. It's changing things but I'm not sure that those absences or alterations actually hurt the story.

I saw this last night at the 10 pm show at the big Burbank 16 theater here and it was truly a piece of cinema to behold I mean there was moments were I had chills just because of how well the visuals and sound design & music fit.

Dune Messiah does well Children of Dune will be greenlight that how it works
Finally the only review I cared to see! Paul's the man!
Paul...and Paul....theory time....
I don’t want to burst anyone’s bubble, but Frank Herbert died before officially ending this series of books. 😢
But he did write Messiah & Children of Dune, the next 2 books in the series that finish the story of Paul.
@@gmotdotyes. Maybe DV will read them one day
His son found his notes on the series ending and wrote the ending. Despite the differences in writing style, the plot and ending is fantastic
I hope they kinda rework messiah somewhat. It was interesting, but not sure the new fans and some older fans will like that book. But will see.
Thanks, great video, I am headed to see it a second time in IMAX tonight so I can get the full Immersion!
Best Picture of 2024
Very nicely analyzed. Brilliant!
Harkonnen does not sound Russuan at all. It sounds Finnish, and is Finnish.
Follow your Messiah Paul😅; best meta joke ever
Film is a 10/10 definitely it'll be up there for best sequels of all time villian crushed it
As a self confessed Dune elitist, part one and part two have been the best adaptations to date.
Loved, this movie, want to see it again, can’t wait until I can watch part one and two back to back
Haven’t seen a cinematic movie worth of the big screens in so long.. magnifico!!!!!! ❤❤❤❤
Loved the performance by Rebecca, Austin and Timothy ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Shame Villeneuve is stopping at Dune: Messiah as I felt that book was quite weak compared to Dune. But considering how weird it gets I can see why he made that choice.
I would've finished with Children of Dune. The sins of the Father are undone by the children.
@@ethancoster1324True Leto II is the Messiah, although the golden path is something he strives for, he kinda stumbles, but eventually it all turns out the best for humanity. Kinda the point. Atreides! Atreides! Atreides!
Apparently the books get super religious? The ones after messiah
Messiah needs to be a showtime series. Three movies for Children of Dune. Showtime series for the Golden Path.
A tv show wouldn’t do the golden path justice
They knocked this one out of the park. Movie of the year so far. Absolutely love it
Kinda concerned after the ending. Having Chani in opposition to Paul is totally different.
Book Chani would never do that - she trusts him
It’ll be resolved; Paul saw the future. It’s a natural reaction to watching Paul lose himself and become that which he feared.
She basically won't come back.
@@kanaric She will. He already saw that she will. It's why though it hurts him he is mostly unconcerned.
Paul killing Jammis was a good forshadowing into his character as a young man. There a side of him like his father, who first thinks and acts out of kindness and mercy.... But then theres a scared little boy who is hungry for control that took over when he was being peer pressured..... 😂 Great foreshadowing
Paul DOESN'T BECOMES GOD EMPEROR!!!!!!!
Completely agree with your ending thoughts, this has made itself a place among the greatest movies ever
3:30 he never says “women have no power Dune”
They lose all their power once the god emperor comes to be
Dude sounds as excited to do this as an amazon Warehouse employee.
"Make sure you are Dune your part Too" dude, you brought it back. LOL
another great breakdown from the Heavy Spoilers Team. you guys always hit home runs.
big fan, apreciate you guys. 10/10
Been waiting for this drop like I used to wait for Santa Clause. Brilliant movie
Agreed
hope you enjoy it
Actually, Jessica can't access her genetic memory of her father, the baron.
Oh Paul. Great video, as per usual. I really could have done without that "two girls..." Reference. I had horrific PTSD-like flashbacks of the first, and only, time I saw it. 🤢 I had just gotten those visions out of my head but you just had to bring em back, didn't you? But seriously, great breakdown. My dad and I saw this yesterday and he said it was the best thing he's seen in a while, and I quite agree.
I can't stop thinking about this movie. It was that good. I wasn't thinking first hand about comparisons too the Dark Knight, but those are completely valid. Dennis is essentially cerebral Christopher Nolan. I've loved pretty much everything he's touched since and Incendes
Thanks for the video, Paul! Just got back from seeing it, and it was SO well done! It may have been almost three hours, but it felt way shorter! Can't wait to see how they do with the next movies!
Think Austin butler might be the best actor in Hollywood
Gotta be honest, I’ve been watching new rockstars and screen crush for a few years now and I just recently got into your videos and have binged so many of them. You’re so fucking funny dude, thank you
Always a pleasure to listen to your recaps and your opinions on things since they're insightful yet humble. Keep it up mate!
My biggest worry for Dune Messiah. Sometimes that story feels very incomplete because you’re supposed to read Messiah and children of Dune kind of back to back type of deal and I really hope they don’t end Messiah on a cliffhanger because I really want to see children of dune. After children who really cares it’s get kinda complicated after children tbh
I read gets weird during Children of Dune plot complex
Paul was actually VERY careful with his atomics to placate the Landsraad; he used the weapons against a terrain feature not against the sardukar.
