I'm in college right now an I was just hyperfocused on these paintings, The Garden of Earthly Delights, Triptych by Hieronymus Bosch and there is one of those mouse in that painting. (41:06) can you say (REACH!) 😂
Great video, small detail though, small thing, but Jessica couldn't marry into House Harkonan because her father IS the Baron. See Paul is descendent from the Atredes line, but Jessica's line is The Bull (Harkonan) and that is why Paul is so rare and otherwordly he is the "best" of both peoples
8:50 whilst you can take Paul's visions of his death as metaphor, it's also worth noting that his visions are sometimes seeing different versions of the future.
Minor point - his death to Jamis isn't a symbolic death, it's him actually dying. Paul can't see the definite future, he can see possible futures - him dying in the duel is one possible future, which he obviously hopes to avoid
Correct, in the tent scene he envisions being a warlord that has a fanatical army using his father's skull as a religious item. None of that occurs as such, maybe
this is already know to the reader by this time...that futures are merely possibilities, and you can influence it towards or away from an individual future. some things are set in stone and cannot be altered, though you find this out much much later.
@azmodanpc the books actually Dune Messiah, I've also read it, and I'm pretty sure they never used the father's skull hence my mentioning of such and also stating maybe at the end of my comment.
12:00 correction about the mentats. They don't get their abilities from spice, but something called "the juice of sapho", which is why their lips are stained - or maybe tattooed to cover up the stains, I forget. The navigators of The Spacing Guild, on the other hand, are literally drowning in the spice.
I think Villeneuve waiting to get more experience in director other sci-fi movies like Arrival and Blade Runner 2049, before to start on Dune shows how much respect he had for the source material as he wanted to make sure he made the best film possible to honor it. The gulf between having an experienced director working on Dune , compared to some of the recent MCU movies that had very inexperienced directors is very telling.
Villeneuve did a wonderful job with visual symbolism in Enemy(2013?). The problem isn't with talent, it's with studios not wanting to take a chance on anything less than a sure thing.
I'm disappointed that Lady Jessica was played as so anxious and vigilant. My impression of her from the books is someone more controlling, certain of herself but needing to cultivate calm to take decisive but not rushing in. It is she who leads him into the desert a child up to the point where Paul's meeting with Fremen and battle serving as his rite of passage, not really meeting Chani until accepted into the Fremen Seich.
I thought this was a terrible tribute to the book that focused on visual spectacle over the compelling plots within plots of the book. Normally I don't care if a movie makes necessary changes to bring a vision to life... but this just ignores the parts of Dune that differentiate it from the works that Dune would inspire. I love Star Wars, but reducing Dune to an action movie feels like a huge disrespect to the source material.
There are two key scenes in the book that I'm gobsmacked were left out of the film: 1) the big dinner scene (which would have been a great way to introduce & explain all the various factions) & 2) Duncan's drunked rant towards Jessica followed by her confrontation with Thufir Hawat (which would have added great tension about how the move to Arrakis affected the House, as well as shown a Bene Gesserit & a Mentat going tete-a-tete) These would've added maybe only 10 min or so to the runtime. I think Dune actually suffers from being too short. We don't "luxuriate" in Arrakis after the move & the way it's edited makes it seem like the Harkonnens attacked the same day the Atreides arrival. There's really no concept of time passing for the viewer.
Agreed. The dinner scene is such a condensed summary of non-fremen life on Arrakis. And I think that Leto's single sentence, "I'm not asking the Mother. I'm asking the Benne Gesserit", does not convey long-term intentional friction between Leto and Jessica, and how that also unsettles others. (e.g. Duncan.)
Idk the dinner is a huge section of the book. You had the water seller and smuggler plot lines that would have to be expanded. I would've loved to see it but I see why it was cut.
I think they actually filmed a version of the dinner scene but it was cut and you can see at least one scene where Duncan has on a formal wear but it’s brief and cuts right away.
Many of the BG abilities are not derived from Spice, including the voice and their control of their body. They can realize nearly complete control of their bodies through a practice called Para Bindu. This is demonstrated by Jessica training Paul before they left Calladan.
Pretty sure that is wasn’t Spice use that allowed Jessica (or other Bene Gesserits) to choose the gender of their children. Rather it was done through their training of body control.
I don't remember completely but I do know that after a BG drinks of the Water of life to become a Reverend Mother It gives them the ability to control the way their bodies break down chemicals within their bodies making them "Immune" to poison (They have to actively concentrate on breaking it down to make it not kill. in the book Paul of Dune there is a scene where he gets attacked by a bunch of hunter/seekers. He grabs and stops a bunch but manages to get hit a couple times but is able to convert the poison into something safer for his body to break down but it requires time to do.)
I read all the books and saw all the movies. This is one of the best, most complex stories ever written. One gripe I have with all the movies though is how little they show of the bene gesserit. They're a really interesting faction pulling the strings of the universe, performing eugenics to control the future, holding the knowledge of all previous members, and have full physical (martial arts) and mental control. The Voice is just one tool in their vast, terrifying arsenal.
I hate how they cut out the politics and Dr Yueh plot. 2/3rds of the first film should have been an espionage thriller that blows up into the escape to the desert ending with them crashing the vertibird
I watch this breakdown this morning I watch the movie... see something I didn't see before then watch this breakdown again and notice more n more . Thanks Paul. Love these mate
The spice lets Paul see all his possible futures, but he isn’t always sure which is the real future. So he has the experience of all those future lessons. Once he gets the Bene Gesserit powers, he has the memories and experience of ALL his past generations. That’s what the “dreams” in the first part are.
I watched this movie for the first time about 5 or 6 days ago, I put it off for a long time because previously it didn’t look like something I’d like but the more breakdown videos I saw on it the better it looked, so I watched it and I gotta say, A+, really great movie I’m looking forward to the next one this year, it gives me like a mad max old 80’s movie vibe even though it’s more like Star Wars, it just feels like a mad max world with that old school movie vibe, really enjoyable and different from anything else we’ve been getting the last decade. And great video my friend!
It’s not the spice alone that gives people powers, it’s an enhancement drug. The gender choosing and their powers of observation and control is through the BG’s practices and training, spice only enhances what humans had developed on our own. And the mentats use a drug called sapho that stains their lips which puts them in a trance, some use the spice to enhance these abilities
21:55 I saw this as a flash into his future among other names, the worms are called "old man of the desert" by the fremen I think he was saying that he recognized the sound and feeling of a worm coming - a feeling from his future path
In Dune 2020, the scene where the kris knife is presented to Jessica, there is the guard in the room that she tells to stand down, yet in the book it is made clear in this scene, that if anyone other than a fremen sees the knife, they must either be killed or have a purification ritual, and that the knife must shed blood before being sheathed. In the book, Jessica goes to stick Mapes to draw blood, but her training catches signs telling her that the knife is likely poisoned, since the tooth nerve creates a hollow that allows poison to easily be secreted, and at the last moment cuts her with the edge, thus adding more and more to the legends for Mapes, thus her report on Jessica is the best it could be.
44:40 - Heavy Spoiler... Paul is trained in shield fighting, which means he is fast on the defence but slow on the attack. The Fremen saw this as Paul dramatically out matching Jamis and toying with him, but in reality was him having to break his shield training.
Just saw part 2. I have watch part 1 about 100 times. Jesus I want to go right back 8s to the theater. It is just gripping the whole time. I was basically speechless the whole time
just watched this movie today and the amount of visual symbolism is something you don't really see in a lot of mainstream movies anymore. my favorite is the blue dress lady jessica wears, which i found super reminiscent of the virgin mary, who also had the messiah as her son. super cool parallel in my opinion. a bunch of other stuff caught me and my friends attention and it was a blast to catch these little symbols and what-not. also ost is INCREDIBLE.
This quickly becoming my favourite RUclips channel, great job again Paul! The Death visions I thought were him seeing potential futures and the beginning of his prescience which later envelops him. Here he can navigate it as its just his own immediate mortality that's at risk, later every action leads to a larger dark path (which I won't spoil) that he feels he has no way out of. By seeing the potential futures he can navigate the fight as he knows the outcome of each move. He's playing it like chess like a game which echoes back to the fight with Gurney at the beginning which is why I believe it was done like this, to echo both the past and future.
at 19:00 , one thing I think helps with their "animal vs human" bit, is that these great houses have people who've been bred to be superheroes. If they're not going to use the power wisely, they won't be able to be stopped. they're right to be terrified by their own creations giving in to their baser desires like the Harkonnens do so much. We should also be wary, too, though less murdery.
I've heard in several places that the spider creature is likely the doctor's wife, taken apart and rebuilt/mutated as a horrible torture yet leaving her alive in order to keep the doctor's loyalty

He sees glimpses of possible futures. So he saw his own death, as well as one where Jamis lives and teaches Paul about the desert. Shame he didn't find his way to this outcome.
Paul saw himself die because he didn't just see the future, but ALL possible futures, and the decisions he needed to make to bring about the one of his choosing.
Correct me if I’m wrong, I’ve read the books but I don’t ever remember them mentioning mentats or bene gesserit witches taking spice or needing it for their abilities.

HI PAUL ✌🏽 I can’t believe my luck! Dune is on Netflix over here and I just happened to throw it on the other night, rewatching it little by little. Felt like I needed a refresher before seeing the sequel. But to my surprise you have this breakdown?! Dope. I love it. Thanks for the solid work Heavy Spoilers gang!
Rewatched this last night in IMAX with Laser GT on the UK’s widescreen cinema screen. 😎 Now watching this in-depth breakdown video. 😊 Thank you Paul. 🙏🏻
So I really love the last 80m of this movie 😅 it started really slow for me I tried three different times to watch all way thru This breakdown actually really helped me understand Dr Yue more. I did betray Paul’s family but also knew he had to try and protect his wife
I think you are correct in seeing the vision of Paul's death fighting Jamis are a metaphor for rebirth, but it is also its him walking through the various potential outcomes to find the (golden) path subconsciously.
Something no one ever talks about is how the killing of Jamis has an effect on Paul in part 2 where he is given the same opportunity with Stilgar. He rejects their traditions and hybrids them with his own traditions whilst dropping the name Usil. Someone who taught him a lot in his dreams and who he called on at a difficult at a difficult time was taken away from him before they could have that relationship. Destroying their traditions was properly very important in galvanising the clans and probably the reason they could never harvest the dessert power. If they worked as one they could have probably done all of this without Paul but their old ways held them back.
Spice doesn’t enhance mentats nor the bene tleilaxu. Mentats use Sappho juice to enhance their capabilities. Additionally, spice doesn’t give the ability to choose your child’s gender, that’s bene gesserit bodily control. Lastly, Paul seeing Duncan in the vision with the fremen is to also show the fact that in a potential future Duncan lived and didn’t die. Paul struggles with this idea that he killed his friend by his inaction or potential action.
Yesterday, after watching this breakdown , i re-watched the movie, and boy, i did enjoy it more. Or al leat more than the few times i watched it in the past.
I agreed with Denis about the release, and went to the theater to see it. Saw it twice that way before streaming it. It's the very definition of a cinematic experience, and as a huge fan of the franchise I wouldn't have been able to live with myself if I had done it any other way.
For months ive been trying to figure out where ive heard that muffled chanting singing that is in the new iphone titanium commercial. Its the damn Horrokens! 😂
That bit from Life of Brian is pretty funny. I had forgotten that Mandy yanked him out of the window by his ear. He's not The Messiah; he's s very naughty boy!
I just finished the second of the series, for I think the 7th time. If it's your first read of the series have a great read, if it's another read of them have a great read!
I saw it in the cinema and I've never experienced a film that accentuated scale like Dune did. The huge ships looked small compared to the desert, but still huge compared to the ant-like figures that walked out of them. I'm really looking forward to part 2. Having read the book it could be fantastic, but it could also be a jumbled, confusing mess.

"I recognize your footsteps old man" could also be referring to Shi-halud, the old man of the desert
0:41 your legit the fourth RUclipsr that I have that I watch the most this guy psychic
Paul I love this channel.. Helped me get through some really dark time!! Bring back the podcast.. Please 😂
thank you so much, will be dropping one next week
@@heavyspoilers ahh man and that reply has made my day! I look forward to seeing a new "real spoilers" pop up 😂 take it easy fella and thank you again! Absolute life saver!
He sees glimpses of possible futures. So he saw his own death, as well as one where Jamis lives and teaches Paul about the desert. Shame he didn't find his way to this outcome.
Dune is my favourite book series so this video is an instant masterpiece
Paul saw himself die because he didn't just see the future, but ALL possible futures, and the decisions he needed to make to bring about the one of his choosing.
Villeneuve did a great job with Prisoners. I caught so much more the 2nd time
I just realized I like all of his movies lol
Correct me if I’m wrong, I’ve read the books but I don’t ever remember them mentioning mentats or bene gesserit witches taking spice or needing it for their abilities.
Part 2 is a spectacular visual experience with much more action for those who think Part 1 was methodic
Oh, hell yes! Was looking forward to this after you showed the thumbnail/title off in the community tab the other day. Love the books, and I've rewatched part 1 way more times than I care to admit lol
I actually really like your subtle suggestions to "like" your videos. It's the first I've seen it done without being desperate or cliche' or just outright annoying and it's kinda funny too.
Just watched part two! It is a master piece the closet I’ve felt to the feeling I had when I first watched star wars and lord of the rings! Got a serious smile on my face!!
Ugh. I CANT WAIT FOR PART 2!!!
Fantastic man!!! Absolutely fantastic. So hyped for this movie. We’ve recently moved and gotten all set up with our new TV’s and home theater stuff and all so I’m thinking this weekend will be a good spot to watch Dune again
thank you
I still get goosebumps when the bagpipe plays!
Ah nice! Hope you enjoy the video Toni
Nice one 👍 didnt know it was on Netflix. Appreciated 🙏
Ah man you were so close at 32:00
The spider creature is the Dr.s wife!!!!
Oh wow I would've thought you would have done this years ago. I already know absolutely everything about dune but I'll still watch this cuz I love ya.
This video has been put together so well, Kudos to you Sir
Thank you
The scene with the Mormon missionaries helping House Atreides move house to Arrakis was surprising!
24:00 - Bene Gesserit go to Caladan, not Earth.
Any suggestions on any good Si Fi shows? I just finished The Silent Sea and All of Us Are Dead on Netflix, and need to keep this binge going.
For all Mankind, Foundation, See, the Expanse, Legion.
Rewatched this last night in IMAX with Laser GT on the UK’s widescreen cinema screen. 😎
Now watching this in-depth breakdown video. 😊
Thank you Paul. 🙏🏻
Canadian here. I love bagpipes. My uncle played them at my brothers wedding. Beautiful instrument but not for everybody 😂
super interesting video thank you so much
Please please please keep up the breakdowns.🙏🏿I was needing my fix and I appreciate the movie crack😌
No doubt man, love doing em
The existence of the spider makes sense once you get to know the Tleilaxu and their creations
The bagpipes were a surprise but Hans keeps things epic. Figured like the bullfighting and Mandarin, all stuff they held onto from Earth.
Thank you Paul, I tried watching this when I was a kid and never made it through the end.
I just can’t imagine Peter Berg directing Dune. Geez! Would’ve been horrid.
So I really love the last 80m of this movie 😅 it started really slow for me I tried three different times to watch all way thru
This breakdown actually really helped me understand Dr Yue more. I did betray Paul’s family but also knew he had to try and protect his wife
Many thanks for this massive lore drop!!!
I think you are correct in seeing the vision of Paul's death fighting Jamis are a metaphor for rebirth, but it is also its him walking through the various potential outcomes to find the (golden) path subconsciously.
28:36 this is actually the black hawk down shot. James Cameron and Denis Villeneuve talk about this shot.
Bringing out the big breakdown! Nice 😁👍
Hell yeah. I love Now Playing. Glad you shouted them out.
Love how Gurney sleeps in the same place as the troops.
Mad Respect! 🫡
I didn’t think it would take this long for this breakdown to come out
Ooohhhhh weeeee can't wait til you drop this dune part break down 😂
Ngl I watch dune 1 at home and it was ok but recently watched dune 2 in the theaters, it's a whole new experience. Watch in on the cinema!
My boy prepping for Dune part 2, just finished watching your blade runner videos. We move!
Legend!
Props to Paul for acknowledging who is the most powerful😂🤝 (19:06)
Yesterday, after watching this breakdown , i re-watched the movie, and boy, i did enjoy it more. Or al leat more than the few times i watched it in the past.
Ey glad to hear, that means a lot
Great breakdown and very informative
Amazing Beautiful Film
Cheers
Thank you
Pleasure
Great video. I love dune seen it loads of times can’t wait for part 2 👌
love all your videos
Much appreciated, thank you
I agreed with Denis about the release, and went to the theater to see it. Saw it twice that way before streaming it. It's the very definition of a cinematic experience, and as a huge fan of the franchise I wouldn't have been able to live with myself if I had done it any other way.
Glad I saw this in theaters with my step-dad. I knew we were in for a treat, so I watched his reaction for a few key moments
For months ive been trying to figure out where ive heard that muffled chanting singing that is in the new iphone titanium commercial. Its the damn Horrokens! 😂
I thought it was alluded to that that spider-like creature was the doctor's wife.
i have watched it everyday for a week i am obsessed
32:42 “They’d take her apart like a doll” that’s your answer to who the spider with human limbs is.
Paul, great video! Sardaukar pronounced SAR-DAO-KAR. 👍🏿
Just bought my Dune part 1 re-release tickets. Ive always wanted to see this in IMAX
That bit from Life of Brian is pretty funny. I had forgotten that Mandy yanked him out of the window by his ear.
He's not The Messiah; he's s very naughty boy!
Had to join to watch this breakdown but worth every penny. Almost done with the book and will be reading and hopefully watching the sequels
Thanks so much that means a lot
I just finished the second of the series, for I think the 7th time. If it's your first read of the series have a great read, if it's another read of them have a great read!
So excited for part 2!!
Great video Mr. Definition.
