"The Grudge" from Tool's "Lateralus" album (2001). In my opinion the heaviest riff that Tool has ever made. The bass is being played in its highest octave and still it sounds really heavy. There are lot of tabs and covers that do something completely different at 0:19. They play an open d string with the hammer-on and pull-off and then a 7 on the G string which is nonsense. There is literally no need to have such a huge gap when you can play it on another string. So as you might've noticed, you need some delay (about 310Ms) for the intro and some moments later on. And at 2:24 we can of course see me messing up by not going to the 15 for some reason. Now, this song is all about hammer-ons and pull-offs. 3:27 is a good example of this happening. You really don't want to pick all these notes. You can pull-off 25% of these notes. 7:22 is the hardest part of the song and it will take some effort to get the timing right. As I say in the video, Maynard's "LET GO" are the same timing as the bass notes. But then you have to know when to play those chords with delay. It's tricky. Really fun, and not that difficult to play unlike Jambi...
Some important information that nobody is going to read.
Tuning : D-A-D-G
Artist : Tool
Bassist : Justin Chancellor
Album : Lateralus (2001)
Song : THE GRUDGE
Bass : Ibanez SR1805
1:18 will always be my favorite bass riff
So simple yet so powerful
For some reason, it makes me think of a clock ticking or something. Such a mysterious riff
the first time i heard this riff i was completely entranced and mesmerised
ikr it's so good. fuckin tool man
@@edrzl A clock is fitting with all the lyrics referring to saturn.
I like the part where the bass goes 'boink boink boink'.
Somehow I knew exactly what you were talking about with that sound 🤣🤣
@@LynX435 what part is that? Lol.
Really nice work on re creating Justin's sound on this on bro, you should totally smash out Forty six & 2
Ironically Justin's tone isn't super hard to recreate I mean obviously to get it perfect would cost like a s*** ton of money but like you know you can get it fairly close with like some gain and a distortion pedal oh and Ernie Ball strings That's important ernie ball strings kick ass And it's what he uses
It’s not easy
Gotta respect a man who listens to tool and has a borderlands tee
You are a master of rythm and crazy time signature. This chanel is a mine of gold
Thank you so much!
Man, your TOOL covers and tabs have honestly been so helpful for me. There’s just so much to digest in these songs that it can often be hard to figure out what exactly the bass is playing.
I'm very glad to hear that :)
you need more views bruh this is sick!
Thanks :)
Man that passage from 2:33-3:30 is so interesting in an awesome way. Some notes I wouldn’t expect that add a ton of really sweet texture. Awesome work!
Thank you!
That eighth fret can make anything sound beautiful
same. changed the song completely for me
Unreal!! Hell of a job covering this, man. It just makes me wonder how in the world Justin writes this stuff.
Same here.. thank you :)
Cuz he has talented band mates who trust his vision and talent. That is a band. Its that easy yet so hard for many for some reason.
Thanks to you, I became a great bassist, this was the first Tool song I learned to play completely, then came Bottom, Undertow, 46&2, etc. I can't stop playing the bass, I became the instrument.
You are the bass now
Thank you for all of these TOOL covers. You absolutely crush these songs! Kudos!!
Thank you so much :)
¡Muchas gracias!
@@LeoBassCovers2 😃🌼
That’s a beaut of a bass. Cover sounds great too, love it man!
Extra thumbs up for the Borderlands 2 shirt. 👍🤘
This video is a godsend, your ear is fantastic and your tabs are on point
Thank you very much man!
Such a timing masterpiece! Perfect cover Leo!
Thank you! :)
This is impressive, man. I know it's just a cover but you gave it Justin's sound.
Thanks man!
Very tight, very nice 👌
Absolutely sick.
Amazing work, killer tone, and thank you for correctly playing with a pick unlike 80% of the RUclips bass channels out there
Thank you! Well to be fair, for Tool you have to use a pick.
pure...and love the borderlands t
Thanks man!
Incredible cover man, thanks to you I'm learning this masterpiece from TOOL. Thank you.
Have fun with it!
8:08 - 8:10 pretty certain he plays chords here.
Edit; yup he does watched it live
o cara bebeu muito da música indiana
Awesome cover man! Couldn't imagine playing this so good. When you said you messed up at 2:24, its ok man! Everyone makes mistakes especially at this caliber.
Just acknowledging it is all :)
Thank you!
Thanks man you helped me learn this song
Awesome!
Muito obrigado por seus vídeos. De verdade!
Olha só quem está por aqui. Gosto dessa banda até hoje por sua causa. Um abraço.

Thank you!
Great cover man, wish I got into bass sooner cuz this is greatness
Thanks man!
@@LeoBassCovers2 no problem 😉
Awesome dude.
It's back!!! And Jambi as well! Oh yeah... ^^
Amazing cover
Thanks!
Amazing 👏
Thank you :)
this is so fucking hard
edit: nevermind i was just super baked
Do you play in a band? Btw awesome execution this sick bass line
Thank you! I don't play in a band no..
This is too fucking hard dude damn
Try playing it slowly first. Might help a little bit
LeoBassCovers been workin at it today, I really wanna get this entire album down. The intro riff is the easiest part for sure. Parabola is giving me a lot of trouble too, just so much technique !!!
And the worst has yet to come with Reflection and Triad..
If you ever do 46 and 2 try out using the shallow detune with the whammy pedal all the way up, it sounds closer to the album than my flanger.
I literally released my cover of 46 and 2 a week ago haha
LeoBassCovers damn I just checked for it last week lmao
Hey. Great cover! What gear did you use to achieve the tone?
Thanks! To be honest, I have no idea what I did. This video is 3 years old by now so I can only guess and say that I probably had bass and treble on 9/10 and mid on 4/10. I think I used pro steel strings from D'addario back then which might've helped with the tone.
👌
Plug into bass amp and enjoy, so soothing.
The rhythm of the chorus is driving me crazy. You think it would be the easiest part.
Honestly it's the only part I cant do at this point
I try playing this on my P Bass. I break my fingers off. I watch Justin play, and it’s like he has a ukulele in his hands. What are these bases that fit these songs?
for less than a $1000 all you can get is a musicman stingray
Hi Leo, whenever you find a moment, could you please make the PDF for this song available too?
Done :)
@@LeoBassCovers2 thank you!
👌🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
When I play the 15-18th fret on the higher D string, it plays a B flat like the 19th fret. But when I play the 19th and up, the right notes come out. Do I just need to push through the pain and use more pressure til my fingers break, or is there another way to fix this?
Pls consider doing 46&2
No need. CoverSolutions video is enough right.
@@LeoBassCovers2true, I'm not asking for a learning purpose - just curious to see your take on it man! You also have a knack for simplifying things... (0:19)
imagine TOOL without J.C ? Lol lucky for the fans
Roughly around 1:44, which effects do you use and how do you set ur amp to have that crisp ass tone with the low notes?
Mine kinda sounds dull after playing around with the settings for a while. Thanks!
Honestly, I think most of that tone just came from buying D'addario pro steel strings. I wasn't actually with it because the bass (Ibanez SR1805) made it sound quite trebly. But yeah, lots of treble and bass + pro steels strings. I think that might work.
I’m very unfamiliar with bass and effects and stuff how exactly do you get delay?
I used a digital effect so I have unlimited options when it comes to the delay. But there are some physical pedals that allow you to be very precise :)
great cover. only thing i would do away with is the "nonsense" bit in the description for the 0:19 riff. chancellor plays the riff on the open D, and naturally so will the others. trashing it just comes off as lazy.
What delay are you using
Not a pedal. It's a digital plug-in :)
bueno.. en teoria la tengo.. ahora solo falta la practica
🤘🤘🤘👍👍👍
7:45 how do you pick 2 strings that are apart with a pick? Is there a 0 thats supposed to be picked in the higher d string?
Yeah the 0 is actually supposed to be there. Muting strings inbetween other strings is possibly by muting it with with your middle finger. But in this case, you can just play the open string as well :)
American culture
just play it on 4 tf bro
I didn't even had a 4 string back then :)
sing and playing is stupidly hard btw
Yup..
I wish borderlands 3 didnt suck 😔
I haven't even played it lol
First of all, thank you for this amazing cover! I listened to it and it helped me a lot figuring out some parts of the song. I used this cover and another drum cover I found on RUclips (ruclips.net/video/HrcPbVBU9LM/видео.html), put them together to have a Drum and Bass starting track on which I added the guitar. I'm not trying to make the promotion of this work here but since I don't know how to contact you so directly, here is the request I would like to make. I would like to ask you if :1) this is Ok with you (using your material in this way) and 2) if would would mind posting a "bass only" track (with nothing else on it). I could send you the result of what I did if you want to hear it.
Thank you for your comment and for asking. You're not the first to do this, but you are one of the first to actually ask which I appreciate. So go ahead! My bass only video is already on the channel ( ruclips.net/video/KygcEnesn0M/видео.html ). Warning though, I'm not particularly proud of this video in terms of tone or timing. So it could sound a little off cause this video is about 3-4 years old by now. Feel free to do the same with other covers of mine, as long as I get the credits for the bass tracks. Good luck :)
@@LeoBassCovers2 Thanks a lot for your answer. Wow! And thanks for "your bass" only covers. I will have to ask the drummer the same thing. I hope I'll have the same position as you. I'm not as tight as you are but I'm doing my best and having lots of fun doing this. Thank you again and keep up the good work. Now if only I could find a bassman like you to start a band...
