- This is it, the big one. My #1 favorite song of all time, Anesthetize (from @PorcupineTreeOfficial's Fear of a Blank Planet) is the finest piece of songwriting by the maestro @StevenWilsonHQ . A gargantuan 17+ minutes in length, it has three distinct movements and hundreds of layers of synthesizers, guitars and vocals.
I had held back on doing my version of this for a while, as I wanted to get better at my production abilities first before tackling this behemoth of a tune and its huge variety of sounds. This was very much the right call, as by the time I was finished, my Reaper session for this cover had over 130 tracks.
The goal for this cover was not to reinterpret the song, but to infuse it with the sonic palette I have been developing to see how it would sound through my voice. This includes a more prominent bass, growly guitar, and the combination of my and Olivia's voices.
One particular sound that was unexpectedly challenging to pull off was the synthesized percussion that plays throughout the entirety of "The Pills I'm Taking". I had to create four different sounds and layer them together, and as the tune progressed, different layers would ebb and flow.
The final result, including this video, took about four months to do and hopefully lives up to the standards laid down by PT.

I'm not sure people understand how good this really is.
I really don't understand why RUclips and other social media platforms are FULL of horrible "content" with so many likes and attention, and things like this video, good quality stuff, with low amount of likes and attention. It's frustrating, it's very confusing, and disappointing. It seems like most of the people is wrong! But hey, that also means there are fewer of us with actual good taste, which makes us special, therefore we win.

I totally agree. The media prefers to cover junk instead of great music. This guys do an excellent job playing PT my favorite band.
To start...this is excellent. To address OP's question: Prog (especially prog metal) challenges the listener and artist to actually engage with the music and lyrics. Usually for longer than 6 minutes. If this songs lyrics mean anything, it is about the difficulty we have in this era of prescription drugs, social media, and anxious human interaction to actually engage with such beautiful complexity.
This is f#cking OUTSTANDING!!!! Never would have thought anybody would cover Anaesthetize, yet here it is and done to perfection 💊❤🤘

Wow! I’m so grateful for eventually finding this, I had goosebumps throughout the whole song. I have listened to the original countless times, and also played a lot of PT songs with my own band but this song is something else to pull off. Madly impressed! I wish you all the success with your music, you deserve it
Thanks so much. PT songs always sound more straightforward to pull off compared to say, Dream Theater or Rush. But then when you actually get down to it, you realize how hard it is because of all the different layers to their sound!

the end of the second movement sounds sooo full on, like it might have been a nightmare to pull it off, but you did it, for so many parts this sonically comes off identical to PT, it's amazing for that, as well as all the parts where it sounds a bit more like yourself and Olivia, and a great choice having her start the whole song off i think, she's great and a great fit for that vocal part. i'm just all out thrilled and blown away by this performance and showcasing of your abilities

@@gothikserpentmusic for sure dude, I happen to be super fussy with female singers, I listen to Steven, Ville valo, Corey Taylor, Brandon Boyd, Matt Bellamy and so many guys that can already sing pretty much anything, that I haven't really fell for too many female singers when my pallet already over overfloweth haha, basically gotta be Shirley Manson or Alanis Morissette to get in, but it was absolutely the right call here, she's a gift, I really enjoy the duo thing, the back and forth, I enjoy how much soul you both bring to each project, have a wonderful year ahead guys x can't wait to see what's next

This took some serious work - well done! That Lifeson solo... :) a little cleaner sounding than the frenetic original but tight.

@@gothikserpentmusicThat must have been great. I missed that, or rather I have never seen Porcupine Tree live. My biggest favorite is the Band Opeth. The frontman Mikael Akerfeldt and Steven Wilson are friends and habe also produced an album together. But that was too quiet for me personally.
I have to say again that you are extremely talented and how you master all these instruments. You must be very proud and I am happy about every new video from you. It is a shame you don‘t have 5 million followers here…

Anyway, I am actually now working on a cover of The Incident, the whole 1 hour suite, and this time with a live drummer. Can't wait to put it out when it's ready.

WOW, the amount of work that you must have dedicated to reach this has to be absurd. You must like this piece at least as much as me (I find it the best PT song and one of the best of the century). Congratulations for playing such high level music. When I closed my eyes, I could hear PT (and, at the same time, you make subtle changes that make this cover only yours). Thank you! The drums are done with EZdrummer2 with both the progressive rock and drums from hell soundpacks mixed together. When I recorded this cover in 2020, it was in the middle of the COVID lockdown so unfortunately I did not have the means to record with my drummer.
