- When I first watched their Ordinary World music video on VH1 way back in 2000 (or 2001, I can't remember), Duran Duran became the first favorite band, and arguably were my first step towards engaging with music in more than a casual way. They were hyped as a boy band; the 1980s equivalent of today's BTS, but the key differences were that they wrote sophisticated songs, played their own instruments, and had an actual artistic vision.
In this cover of Come Undone, off their 1993 Wedding Album, I wanted to take the 90s sheen off and give the tune a punchier, more live band feel without compromising its pop sensibilities. While doing some preparatory research into this song, I noticed that virtually all other covers of it were heavy metal renditions, with insanely overloaded guitars and pounding drums. I don't quite understand why this song made so many bands want to do metal versions of it, but it was a critical factor in my decision to avoid putting any heavy guitars in my version.
The result was a cover that was unexpectedly difficult to pull off; the absence of heavy guitars to fill the sonic space meant that I had to experiment with other forms of layering, including a small army of synth pads. Also worth mentioning is the use of a Chapman Stick in place of the original's synth bass. The Stick's percussive sound blends well with the kick drum, giving the bottom end a nice contrast to the many flowing synth landscapes.

The instruments are spot on....But in my opinion, the guy should have sang all of the leading parts. The girl did well on the back ground.
I agree he should've done lead. While they're both good (she's amazing), his voice is more well suited for that part 😊
@@heathermiller5765 Thank you, I originally did sing the lead parts but at the time wasn't very confident with my voice to keep it that way, so I replaced it with her's.

Kerwin,after reading your notes/thoughts on Duran Duran. You have said what I had my thoughts on them, somewhat vindicated. That band are as important as say, Depech Mode,a local band well once perhaps.Basildon.Your stick playing is as good as say Nick Begg`s. he plays with SJW..Is that a real stick ,I have started to make an 11 string board and use Rotosound strings for the 5 string bass section and have considered making it fretless as I will also use it with a synthesizer .so dual pickups .A sort of Frankenstein -stick. Stay wild.Regards from UK.💯

Thanks for the high praise! I've considered it yeah, for example Go Your Own Way or Comfortably Numb, but these covers take a lot of time because I've got to find some kind of "angle" to set them apart from the original while staying true to the original spirit. So it can happen, I just don't know when.

It's a Chapman Stick, it's played by tapping the strings which gives it a percussive quality that I thought would sound good for this tune.
