The Dark Secret of Porcupine Tree

- My name is gianluca pavan I'm from Venice in Italy and I decided to make a living with music again in 2022 after 2020 when I had to leave my professional touring sideman career.
I'm a multi-instrumentalist,singer and songwriter and every day I explore sounds and boundaries of music.
But not only here if you like what I do check this link and don't be afraid to DM me for any reason
And until next time YOU ARE LUCKY MY MAN !!!!
linktr.ee/Gian...
love how everyone's first porcupine tree song is always the most random song in their entire discography
Mine was Arriving Somewhere but Not Here.
I fell the fuck in love
yeah, mine was No Reason To Live, No Reason To Die. Can't even find it on Spotify.
@@unnamedshadow1866 shesmovedon
Lol
mine was the sound of muzak
The dark secret is that once you listen to them, everything else becomes boring. Damn you, Steven.
Fuck you are righ
😆
Ditto
That's not my experience. Go listen to Maudlin of the Well, Unexpect, and Diablo Swing Orchestra. Those bands are for sure still interesting after listening to Porcupine Tree.
@@SpartanLaserCanon Thank you for the musical tips. I'll check them out.
Blackest Eyes is the song that introduced me to Porcupine Tree.
Was at an Incubus concert, on their 'Morningview' tour, and that song came on during the pre-show house music.
Luckily, the dj named the band and the song. I spent the entire concert repeating it to myself so I wouldn't forget and could look them up when I got home.
That moment is actually more memorable to me than the Incubus show itself... and it was a good show.
Damn that sounds like an amazing show! Both of their best albums IMO
In Absentia was my first PT album, been a Steven Wilson fan ever since.
You trolled me with the title of the video, and I love it. I share your respect for Steven Wilson, he's genius. I appreciate your versions of the PT songs, you are definitely a talented guy!
Thanks dude 😁👌
My one issue with SW is the way he has treated departing musicians.....Marco and Guthrie were completely disrespected when even going in SW knew they would be touring on some point with their own band. He left them out of all rewards and even notification of when hey hit gold etc. Not very professional and certainly a little high on himself, but he is, without doubt one of the most prolific artists in the world.
God damn, I dont know how it happened but this band has evaded my ears. Thanks for the awesome introduction
Your welcome dude it I can suggest star with the album in absentia!
You're in for the ride of a lifetime. What an amazing band. Don't forget to also check out Steven Wilson's solo career, under his own name; ''The raven that refused to sing'' and ''Hand.Cannot.Erase.'', some of the best albums of all time.
@@tobyornot that's true my man !!
@@tobyornot I have been listening for a couple of weeks now and its been awesome. Amazing band, really happy to have discovered them 👍
It evaded everyone’s ears at some point, none of Porcupine Tree’s music was ever mainstream…and yet it absolutely could have been.
Your version of "Collapse The Light" is so beautiful, just got goosebumps! Love this video, Steven Wilson is my favourite inspiration ever :)
Thanks man ❤️he is mine too !!!
I am half way the video and I find this already a very fun format with the self made musical intermezzo's. Love it!
Thanks Dude I'm trying my best to pay my respect to what I consider the best artist of this last 20 years
I have others video like that if you don't mind giving some feedback 😉
You have earned a subscription, as a long time SW fan I felt you captured his genius very well. Minor history note: according to Steven's autobiography the first 3 albums were just him, the band as we know it was put together when the record company recommended a tour. Looking forward to more of your videos!
thanks for the note and the subs dude !!!
In Absentia actually began to be recorded with Chris Maitland as the drummer but he was kicked out because he wasn't taking the metal parts seriously. The change in musical direction was completely led by Steven, in part due to his friendship with Opeth's Michael Akerfeldt. Also, Steven used to listen to some metal as a teenager so it was, in part, a reawakening of appreciation. Gavin was brought in as Chris' replacement but was previously a jazz drummer and played on many pop albums. He said he had to adjust to the heavier metal style of playing which he was not used to. So the change in drummer did not lead to a change in sound - the change in sound led to a change in drummer. 😁
I had pretty much given up on ever hearing any new music that interested me , and then I heard Porcupine Tree live on XM one evening, and my life changed forever in terms of music. I've been lucky enough to see PT live four times and Steven Wilson live two times , and every show made me cry. He has been my personal savior when it comes to also driving me to explore other great Prog bands since.
Same here man
His music is really life changing!!!
This is pretty much what happened to me
He got me back into prog and I was introduced to the modern world of prog music. I was mourning the death of good rock music and I realized it wasn’t dead, just not played by mainstream music media.
i discovered them during the in absentia album cycle, and fell in love. since then i've seen every tour, bought the deluxe blu ray surround versions of the albums, all the concert dvds and blurays... i adore that band, steven is my musical hero. he can seemingly do no wrong. i see his name on a product, i buy it...
Porcupine Tree shifted in a heavier direction when Steven Wilson started working with and producing albuns for Opeth.
The drummer change , while imo SIGNIFICANT, didn't influence the 'heaviness' of the sound, especially since that is neither his forté, nor background.
You're right maybe i express myself badly...but they kept that direction in the other album because gavin got into messhugga and other heavier bands if you think about it.
The opeth part 100% influenced in absentia i agree 1000%
PT's Trains was the first song that introduced me to modern prog music, since then I consumed most of their discography, but in absentia is still my fav one from them. Awesome video man! Greetings from Sardegna😉
Man I love all the effort you have put in this video. The recording quality is incredible, it is really well edited and your covers are just MINDBLOWING. Keep it up (+1 sub).
Thanks man ❤️
It took me an eternity transcribing the drums ahaha
This was fantastic. What a joy to watch! I have been sucked into a Porcupine Tree portal for the last 2 years of my life and its the best portal i've stumbled into yet
it's one of the deepest and most distructive rabbit hole ever ahahah
I feel your pain, Gianluca. I also discovered a band as they were in the process of coming to their end. I was going through a Surf Guitar phase when I discovered Laika and The Cosmonauts. Luckily, I was able to see them on their final tour as an opening act for Los Straitjackets, which was a cruel joke because they're SO much better! I was so impressed with them live that I grabbed a guitarist friend and dragged him to the next night's performance on the next stop of their tour. I got to talk with them and I told them how sad I was that they're breaking up as I'd just recently discovered their music. Great bunch of guys, very gracious. At least we'll always have their recordings..
The memory will remain 🤣🤣
I love your love-letter to Porcupine Tree ❤
Thanks ahahah it is a love letter now that you made me think about it
So I'm italian but I'll still write in english as a form of respect to all other viewers that wouldn't bother using the embedded translator: in Fear of a Blank Planet Steven kinda demonized videogaming as a way for young dudes to blankly stare at a screen and isolate themselves. I'm a big fan of music AND videogames, I really love Steven but couldn't help but cringe every time the "Xbox is a god to me" part came up during the song and video. Fate is ironic though, as later in his career he happened to lend his music to a fantastic game (MADE IN ITALY by a couple of old friends of mine that I used to briefly work and play music with, many years before), and he finally had to acknowledge the art that frequently hides in so called videogames, after all.
The game in question is Last Day of June and it's a little indie gem that made me all emotional from beginning to end. Thank you for reading this comment.
Thanks for the effort man !!
Cool story btw what an honour for your Friends!!
Played it, it's so good
I discovered PT back in 2000 and instantly fall in love with them. I´ve seen them 3 times here in Mexico City and every show was awesome; top notch concerts. No doubt PT is call to be one of the best progrock/metal bands ever.
No doubt man Steven is the goat
I share your adoration of Porcupine Tree. Subscribed! 🎶
Thanks dude!!
10:15 I read somewhere, I can't remember where, that Colin wasn't even asked to join them. Maybe I'm wrong. 😅
I checked after month from this video and it's true
i didn't double check that much
What a great video. I accidentally discovered PT in August of 2022 and the song was Anesthetized. I was blown away. I must have watched the live video a dozens times. I then began my journey and realized they were getting ready to tour the USA. I bought every thing I could find. Long story short. I went to 4 shows. Illinois, Wisconsin, Texas and Colorado. All in 6 days. I’d never done that in my 60 yrs. The closest was back to back Pink Floyd shows. It was exhausting but so worth it. Up until I discovered PT my favorite band was Pink Floyd and then Rush. Of course now, it’s Porcupine Tree. I know now, after a year of listening, no one will replace them at the top.
I'm really jelous of you
As a 28 years old man i won't be able to se Pink Floyd live
can you telling me breefly How is the experience?
BTW you are a fool ahahaha
It was great! The first show was an indoor arena and the second was an outdoor stadium. The show and sound quality was spectacular! If you ever get a chance to see Brit Floyd then you must! I've seen them now 4 times and I can promise you they will not disappoint. Blessings my friend!@@GianlucaPavanMusician
How publish covers of PT without a licence in your video?
Great video and great playing! / I am quite a bit older than you, and have been with PT from the very very beginning. Long before they were doing the harder material there was stuff like Voyage 34 parts 1 to 4 (Floyd influence) and stuff like Up the Downstairs (1993 !!). This album has influences of the dance / rave scene of the time! Mark.
I was at a drum clinic and everyone gave Gavin Harrison a standing ovation (he wasn’t even there) when they announced he was coming to do a future clinic. I was like who the hell is this band Porcupine Tree that everyone is obsessed with. I guess I better check them out. Changed my life.
I'm sure it was a mind fuck ahahah
This was the most respectful 'fuck you' I've ever heard in my life
I just love the man but I hate him at the same time ahaha
Have to admit, Wilson is one beautiful man.
He doesn't age like a vampire ahaha
Gianluca, excellent and entertaining cast of Porcupine Tree! I almost thought you were trashing them, but your delivery was great! I also discovered them late, and thankfully saw them in Chicago for their farewell tour...I was blown away! I'll try to check out your channel more in the future, keep ROCKING!
Thanks mate !!
how cool are they live ?
I was blown away by the emotional violence ahahaha( i cryed a bunch of times ahaha)
The amount of work that went into this must have been insane. Well done! Too bad Deadwing kind of got the short end of the stick here, though: Arriving Somewhere is one of my favorite PT tracks in their entire oeuvre. I also thought C/C was disappointing, or at least not strong on aspects of their music which initially pulled me in.
That said, I’ve found folks listen to PT for different reasons. To me it’s mostly the melancholy expressed by the beautiful melodies; To others it’s the thunderous rock sequences (which I don’t mind if accompanied by the former!). Songs like Rats Return and Herd Culling don’t really resonate with me. But to each their own.
Thanks man it took me almost two weeks because I transcribed the drum parts and I don't play drum since 2010 ahaha
I really enjoy the melancholy too but what I really really love about PT is the PoP element so clever
I love this! Gave a sub. Sending love from USA, good shit man!!
Thanks brother!!!
I was introduced to PT by my drum teacher with the song sound of muzak witch every drumer should learn because the intro drum beat is so cool yet so strange for a beat but so original!
That song it's a drum masterclass on so many different levels
Grande Gianluca!
I really love your un pretended passion for what you doing, this piece about PT is great. Keep on man. Good luck
I keep praising you because DAMMIT I Want To !!
You are an inspiration and the best channel maker music maker on this You Tube thingy for me !
By a f#*ing MILE.
Bravo ! 🌟
voyage 34 is probably the album that I like the most
I need to listen to it a bit more
I'm really not that much trained on the early days
Mainly because these three albums complelitly fuck up my brain ahahah
Ummm... the album is called Fear of a BLANK Planet. One letter makes a big difference lol. I mean I don't think they covered the Public Enemy album.
Ahaha
It's Fear of a BLANK Planet!!
I'm italian i cant pronounce shit ahahaha
It's fear of a BLANK planet. Blank!
I know ahahaah
There are two main reason ahaha
1) I'm italian
2) I'm dumb for not tripple checking during the editing ahahaha
This is funny because the original album that inspired PT is called actually Fear of a Black Planet
Good job with the video. Hopefully this will boost your subscribers, you deserve a lot more.
Thanks man for your words
it will defenetly help !!!
impressive
Thanks man ahaa
Its now about 2 years since i discover PT and since then my live changed. I hear their Music almost every day mainly bc of Gavin. I hope to See them live one day 🙃
And if you read this listen to their Song: disappear . Its realy just uplifting and downgrading at the same time
I will brother
Great video
Thanks buddy !!
Great Vlog Gianluca , my personal PT fav album is Fear of a blank planet . Colin Edwin tells a slightly different story of why he wasn't involved in the reunion, an interview with him exists on youtube.
I need to check them
your this vedio about my teacher of life got you a subscriber
So it seams like we go to the same class ahah
Bravo 👏🏻 👏🏻👏🏻
dark secret is he is so addictive
I flew to London this September just to hear is new album before the release date ahaha
Congrats for your channel.
Make your own music. You can do it ❤

My fav 2 albums r Lightbulb Sun n Stupid Dreams
Cool that's the side of them that I enjoy the less I'm more for the "metal years"
@@GianlucaPavanMusician I like the metal part too. But earlier ones, I like more
I just found out about them last week! I'm pissed that I missed the whole thing! Great band how did I not get the memo?
Bro as a someone who listned to them qiuet a time i dare you to check out: fear of a blank Planet, disappear and futile you wont be disappointed
And Bonnie the Cat and dislocated day ... thank me later .... best Songs ever recorded
let me tell you something
i discovered band like alice in chains and sound garden like 3/4 years ago and i play music for the last almost 20 years ahaha
sometimes we miss the memo ahahaah
Now go catch them As fast as you can ahaha
The time signature is 1/1.
What ? Ahahah
Eyeroll.

Great work! I subscribe as well :)
Love Porcupine Tree, saw them live last year
Me to unfortunately bad sound but fuck me if I cried like a girl ahaha
They came to south America but didn't came to Brazil, so unfair 😭😭😭
Sad 😭
not only you're a goodusician..but you talk as rarely people do about one of the biggest genius of all time...for me and I pretend I'm right..anyone who tasted Tool and PT has understood what is great music.... I I add SuperTramp Genesis Pink Floyd and Dire Straits..that's the planets over the rest.
Thanks man it means so much ❤️
The Creator had a Master tape for me
Fuck yeah that's a track !!!
is this about prog rock?
Maybe Progressive vegetarian grindcore ahahaah
Imo Closure/Continuation is a good album but cannot catch up with the older albums from the 00's. It lacks the power of the older albums and sounds a bit like the more recent and imo more pop like sounding solo albums of Steven Wilson like To The Bone and The Future Bites. I saw PT in Berlin in 2022 and they only performed the bangers from their new album, I think for a reason. Because the banger from the earlier albums they also performed quieter songs albums and they just have that magic that the new album somehow lacks as well, at least a little bit (Of The New Day and Dignity are freakin magic tho) especially in the second half of the album. For me the new album simply isn't that interesting and engaging.
I'm with you it's a strong album but dies compared to those 00's records
Its Fear of a BLANK planet 🙄
I'm italian ahahah
@@GianlucaPavanMusician that’s amore
Funny thing I also discovered them in 2010
That's a coincidence!!
When you said "In Absentia the best work in my opinion... " I quited keep watching your opinion. In Absentia is one of the worst works in PorcTree discography, of course, is my opinion.
Can you explain why ?
Maybe you are more into the Psychedelic side ?You don't like the metal element?
John Wesley, anche lui ha lasciato i Porcupine. Grande chitarrista!
Si era più un turnista ma tanta roba soprattutto aveva la voce perfetta come corista per Wilson
maybe you meant to type "Blank Planet" instead of "Black Planet"?
I know ahahaa I'm Italian and i fuck up a lot of words ahahaha
Decent covers!
Thanks man 👍
No-Man is not pop. I know Wikipedia says art-pop, which is supposedly a genre of pop, but come on. POP is an abbreviation for POPULAR and No-Man was never very popular. I prefer the terms ambient., art-rock, and trip-hop. Avant-garde, experimental, yes. Pop, no, IMHO.
It's not a wrong opinion.
I can't use pop on bands like metallica, sabbath or others
In my mind i associate pop with a style of music instead of popularity
You get me ?
Your covers are amazing! I subscribed and would love to see more!
Thanks man
I'm starting releasing some cover here and there on my channel
I'm thinking about making a full cover of collapse in the style of this video
il concerto di milano indimenticabile
Già visto che li ho scoperti quando si sono sciolti è stata una benedizione vederli dal vivo
Yeak, fak Steven Wilson
No ahahaha
Four chords is a TERRIBLE example for Maitland’s work. Because it’s obviously satire, first of all. Choose Stars Die or Russia on Ice. Maitland was an amazing drummer, less technical but WAY more melodic.
Yes he was a good drummer
but maybe Gavin Served better the song and the band in my mind
It's a matter of tastes like the mangini portnoy debate
@@GianlucaPavanMusician Well the thing is this shouldn't be up for comparison. At least not in a "who's a better drummer". Not even a who's a better fit, because that's also completely subjective. I like late 90s PT better than the 00s era, which is supposed to be "the best". For that era, Gavin is more fit, I'd say. But Maitland was absolutely perfect for the chillier more psychodelic rock from Signify, Lighbulb Sun, and Recordings.
This video is lame
?cause i'm lame
Good band but i can’t stand Steven Wilson’s wineing voice and the drummer sounds like he’s wacking pillows absolutely no resonance
I take it as an offence ahaha It's a matter of taste but I don't think that a resonant drum sound like Soundgarden and other can fit in that music
No soldi suona
10:14 Colin didn't actually decide not to be a part of CC... It's been stated in interviews with both Steven and Colin that they just didn't stay in touch through the years, which for Steven meant that Colin wasn't interested in doing more Porcupine music anymore. Colin's perspective though was that he just never got informed that the band was getting back together, and since the bass on the whole album was already done, he was kicked out.
It's sad that things went the way they did, but alas. We're all human.
That suck I know but it sounds weird ...
Colin still has a business stake in the band through previous recordings however, my feeling is that his non inclusion in the reunion may have been financially motivated. After all, profit between three is more substantial than profit shared between four. The two guys brought in for the tour ie Nate and Randy I suspect would have been salaried.
Jack Black covers Porcupine Tree !? Mind Blown
Ahaha when I was fatter many compared me to the other guy in tenacious Do lol
Jack Black is a great musician to be fair
He more reminds me the Murderface of Dethklok :)
That cover made me have diarrhea since Easters.
He is Jeiwish
fear of a blank planet is literally my favourite song thank god it was included, porcupine tree are brilliant.
im subbing :)
Fear of the blank planet also is my Favorite man its so good it never gets boring
man of culture ahahaha
I could i not iclude something like Fear of a blank planet it's so good
Dude. If you really love them so much, you gotta make covers of their song. Not the once which are already on RUclips but one's which are very rare songs but insane one's like hatesong..... This band is insane, I saw them play live in 2022 and I totally understand your crying at the end cause so did I. I hope you make some covers on them. You are fucking talented......
Dude thanks but I don't do cover on my channel.
Unless I re-arrenge them.
I'm focusing on talking about the albems an making my next one at the moment ✌️
And also I really don't like making them I don't know why :)
@Gianluca Pavan hahaha. That's fine, dude. It's just that porcupine tree is so insane so are the covers that people make. They are the reason why I wanna learn all the instruments that they use so that I can cover them and keep them for myself and listen to it.
@@rahulambekar7388 that's a great goal to be able to play all the instruments!!Really hard but it pays in the long especially if you wonna write something original .
Thank you. By offering your versions of Wilson's songs you simultaneously showed how fucking easy they are to play and at the same time debunked this myth that he's a 'genius'. Cheers.
Thanks my man they are easy on guitar and bass for sure
On key i struggled a lot crafting the sounds and the drums where a nightmare to transcribe
But I definitely put him in the genius tiers for sure
Great music doesn't have to be complicated and complicated music doesn't mean it's great.

This video review is false in my opinion guys.
Ahahah maybe these one are my favourite so I decided to cover them ?

Great musicianship man, very talented.

I'm at 2:28 & I don't care already what he thinks of the god-king Steven Wilson, if offered I would instantly join Gianluca's band and almost as instantly be fired for drunken wildness but, I would at least have tried.
thanks man i'm working on a new band to be honest ahaha
Why nobody mentions shesmovedon? :)
And i really love the live version of 'Normal'.
Especially on surround because of higher dynamic range too.
But a great review bro, i liked your take.
Have you check PT surround ?! Like Dolbi or atmos?
i check Steven this settember live in surround in london
@@GianlucaPavanMusician Only bineurally and spatial audio on streaming services but Dolby Atmos implementation on mobile devices are bad. Doesn't sound as good as official demos Dolby has put in it's website. And also, heavily compresses the dynamic range during playback which kills one of the reasons to listen. Surround (5.1) ones from blu-ray or DVD. He has some Dolby Atmos releases (lossless) on blue-ray too but i do not have the playback system to decode it properly so instead i rip the disc to my PC and have only access to the 7.1 bed of the atmos mix via DAW; not the dynamic objects which move around you in 3D space. Happy to see loudness wars are pulling back a bit thanks to Atmos but definitely terrible user experience, at least on streaming services.
You are my new best friend because your top 3 albums are also mine. 1. Deadwing 2. In Absentia 3. Fear of a Blank Planet in that order. Other 2 are Stupid Dream and Closure/Continuation
