If you are wondering why some clips have the Shindo Racing cars using the orange boost (which can takedown racers and go through buildings), this is footage from custom events I made. You can make Domination Race events, and use the Shindo Race cars instead.

What's sad is, I actually love this game. I would've wanted more like this. *BUT* I didn't want this to be under Ridge Racer..... I feel like it was titled Ridge Racer due to it would catch peoples eyes for namesake. But it did the exact opposite, sometimes bold spin offs in namesake work (Take Need For Speed, the franchise blew up when it went Underground racing.) This was just a very failed gamble, but I'm probably one of the few that still enjoy the game.

It actually looks really fun too. I see it go on sale for bargain bin prices like 2 bucks. Though, I still understand the frustration and anger behind the fans. Bandai had a hard time understanding their own IPs at the time. We saw the same thing with Ace Combat "Assault Horizon". I don't hate that game either but I played through it recently and the game does its BEST to try and make you hate it.

Unbounded's track editor feature is easily the best thing about this game and I've had a blast playing custom Frag Attack events on some tracks I made 💥Combined with ability to edit destructible props, shortcuts and satisfying crashes (thanks to Bugbear's expertise no doubt), it's just fun!
Sure it's not a good *Ridge Racer* game, but it's still a fantastic destructive racer worthy of being compared to the likes of Burnout Revenge and FlatOut Ultimate Carnage instead. I'm sure it would've had a better reception if it wasn't marketed as a Ridge Racer game. (Even though i had a guilty pleasure of racing DLC cars from past Ridge Racer games in my custom events. I guess I just enjoy the novelty of seeing them with damage-models)

But at least you're better off playing this than Flatout 3 (and Ridge Racer Vita kinda)
Edit: The worst thing about this game is that Bugbear temporarily moved their popular Flatout series to the Flatout 3 creators(Team 6) while developing Ridge Racer Unbounded, which is a big mistake for Bugbear than calling Unbounded a Ridge Racer game. (At least they still cared about the Flatout series by updating the Ultimate Carnage Steam Port to make it playable without any access key)

Honestly, I like the art style that Unbounded wants to bring, I like the destroyed effects and dark city atmosphere of Shatter Bay in this game, but it's a shame that they had to change almost all the characteristics of Ridge Racer's gameplay in Unbounded which I think they shouldn't have had to do. Imagine Unbounded but with gameplay mechanics like Ridge Racer 7, I would be the number one loyal fan of that game lol

  • @LudwigWilding
    @LudwigWilding Месяц назад +1

Although I agree to all your points raised, the biggest mistake was certainly badging it as Ridge Racer. Having played Flatout 2 last year, it did remind me quite a bit of it. There is a surprising amount of fun to be had. Drifting is more of a thing where you keep your vehicle nearly parallel to the wall you hit, which makes you bounce off that little bit faster. It doesn't make much sense, but it works with the atmosphere they create. It would make sense to drive that way and it is rewarded. This way, the drifts are far more manageable. A weird thing to do, but works. Completely antagonistic to Ridge Racer as a brand, but that's basdically true for everything that that game does. If you would've tried to design a game deliberately to be to polar opposite to Ridge Racer you wouldn't have come this far.
The other thing is more on the vehicular combat - similar to Flatout 2 - in later races it was less of destroying your opponents, but strategically taking the one or other out when the opportunity arises. If you keep to that, Unbounded seems fine. Sure, it all has to come together to flow well, but I'm surprised that it offers quite a nice challenge, an interesting take on rough racing without going full on to destroy everyone.
Overall it's amazing to see the response from Namco, I didn't know that. It shows a complete lack of understanding what Ridge Racer ever stood for. Reiko would smile warmly at you, full of sparkling eyes and enthusiasm. The unnamed woman in Unbounded looks like the leader of an assassins group where you'd rather expect her to murder you if you question her fashion choices. And exactly that difference goes through all of the game, with each design element. In Ridge Racer you'd need to be an idiot to spin out (and even if - do a 360 and push on), but hit the wall and stop instantly. Unbounded promotes bashing objects and bouncing off walls done correctly is the fastest way to go while drifting without a short lean on a wall will likely loose you places or spin you out easily (as you showed, higher drift angles are very unpredictable).
Unbounded is not as bad as I expected it to be - even if that doesn't stop me from being angry that it still counts as a Ridge Racer. No blame on the developers, but damn. Namce really died after Ridge Racer V when they went bankrupt and Bandai catched it. Not a fan of Ridge Racer 6/7 either although those were solid in their own right. Just not on par with the Ridge Racers that came before.

RRU was a game many slept over from. As an arcade racer, it was very funand I do recommend everyone to give it a try. The game usually goes very cheap on Steam. While sure, it's different from the other RR games, that really never bothered me as I wanted to play a new arcade racing game, no matter what it is. This game, Blur, and Split/Second were the highlights of great early 2010 era Arcade Racing games that all three sadly didn't do quite well as realism and simulation had become more and more popular.

@@GamerAlexVideos the thing is that Ridge racer unbounded gameplay flow is different from burnout, in burnout you takedown to get nitros, in ridge racer unbounded you get nitros to takedown opponents.

Personally, although I do agree that the game doesn't feel like a typical "Ridge Racer" game, I disagree with him on most other things.
Each car feels unique, so spending a lot of time with each vehicle is key. Since this is unusual for an arcade game and especially a Ridge Racer game, I can see why it would throw him off.
The sense of speed, while not perfect, is better than a lot of other games.
The general acceleration is a bit slow, but it's not that bad in my view. Some vehicles do pick up a fair bit of speed - especially some of the Shindo cars (looking at the Wolfram and Crosshare here) and the slow acceleration of some cars punishes mistakes - if you lose too much speed on a turn, you pay the price. It encourages skillful cornering in my opinion.
Vehicle combat is not the best - but if you barrel into someone at a rate of knots you will get a frag without boost active.
In my opinion, this game is underrated. Glad to see you agree.
I still play this it to this day. Way more fun than modern arcade racers like Wreckfest.

Ridge Racer Unbounded is kinda similar with NFS Most Wanted 2012 case, the main problem is their NAME, it shouldn't be named as Ridge Racer in the first place whatever the reason is, Ridge Racer is the racing games about fast pace racing and drift fast In the corner and Unbounded was radically changed the game into Burnout-ish vehicular combat games and those made the core fans was pissed off
Same case with Most Wanted 2012, people though that MW2012 will be the direct sequel to MW 2005 and Carbon but it turns out that it was a entire different game, and also the entire vibe of the game wasn't even supporting what NFS Most Wanted should be despite MW 2012 is not really a bad game

Here's my take about ridge racer unbounded: I bought the game through steam I played it I didn't finish it let alone completing it. Handling models because racing in this game with this type of handling model feels like a chore the sense of speed is just about as sluggish as a modern games can be and I've seen much more faster modern games in recent dates. And furthermore, no cloud saves. If you went to the play this game again on a different computer, you had to go through that slug fest again. Screw that. Ridge racer unbounded has to be one of the worst entries in the franchise with ridge reserve vita become close to 2nd. never mind number one worst game in ridge racer history because of online drm and little to no content available as well as disappointing amount of content left behind dlc and it is a lot of it nothing mentioned the unnecessary collab with Sega's daytona USA. *tangent start* Just a friendly reminder back in 2005 when band diverged with namco to form Bamco. Because of this, most of the namco legacy properties just got side swiped it by Bandaiis interest in anime games full of mediocrity and and nothing else. Giving us mediocre games based on legendary ip's from namco. Really getting some of the ip's to mobile games. Reducing some of the properties into tank wipe as a merchandise. Introducing their new intellectual property that no westerner would ever dare care about it. Straight up wiping miss pac-man junior pac and baby pac out of existence to make way for pacmom, pacboy and pacsis because of the AtGames bad reputation. GAS or Live Service mechanics in a tekken game? Who the heck wants this? *Tangent over* overall I did not enjoy this game as much as ridge racer 7 and ridge racer ds. End of story.

Also. The hero cars were locked forever due to as a Pre Order bonus like Classic Kamata Fiera(RR1), Assoluto Bisonte(R4), and Kamata RC410(RR7)
and bugbear doesn't know about the name of the hero cars it's just naming the cars as the title of the game like calling Kiryu as John "Yakuza".
Also the engine sound of my favorite Ridge Racer hero, Kamata RC410 sounds awful it doesn't sound like a R35 engine. It kinda sounds like an AE86(just because the car is white and has carbon hood. Doesn't mean it's Takumi's AE86).
The Classic Fiera's livery isn't accurate to its RR1 version since the hood is just a tekken logo instead of the F/A racing logo.
    Speaking of takedown mechanic.
Bugbear making the takedown mechanic is like they're watching the takedown mechanics from Asphalt Series and say "That's Rad!".
The girl, Kara Shindo is so boring to me and not as good as reiko nagase and ai fukami (idk if Rena and Gina counts).

As much as I really liked this game at its prime, it’s died down significantly for me. It feels like it tried too hard to be a Burnout clone. The Takedowns (or Frags) were the ultimate dead giveaway as the cutscenes take decades to go back to the gameplay, and the car combat being jank to hell. It’s almost close to Dangerous Driving, but I can’t even be bothered to express how shitty that game’s car combat is.
The only minor positive criticism I can give this game is the track customization is fine, but it’s not like you can make your own designs like Hot Wheels Unleashed, where you have much more creative freedom. I’d say Wreckreation could top it, but given the latest trailer for it, I can’t say for sure if the customization is top notch, but it looks much more creatively free than Ridge Racer Unbounded.
Overall, this game is not the greatest and failed miserably on all fronts.

I agree that it should have never been called Ridge Racer, and I don't consider it to be a part of that franchise either. It's probably one of the worst Burnout clones of it's era. I don't think I liked anything about it.
