Nice work. Glad im not the only one who underestimates how long things will take!

Great job Robin! I'm still terrible at quoting...but getting better. Your job still had hours spent modelling and getting the carve organised etc. All the best mate and the shop is looking great too.

I love hearing and seeing the numbers in videos like this, but I've always wondered, what does the client think when they see the numbers :D In this case you're pretty clear in that you underquoted, but that isn't the case on all videos like this. I'm still for it, don't get me wrong, but it's interesting to think about how the client might see things.

It’s very true! I got a few opinions on what should and, more importantly, shouldn’t go in, and I’m glad I did. There was one other thing that I was going to add but someone called out your same point. Even though my client most likely won’t see this video, if he did it would’ve been a little awkward!

The graphic at the end was cool, on a phone a little small and only on screen a few seconds. So depending on how long that took to add in would be my measure of if the edit time was worth it. Overall though i like the format and think it'll work well for builds going forward 😊

Ooooh hadn’t thought about that, thanks for the feedback!

The project looks great Robin! Too bad you had a loss, but with improved efficiency and multiple projects letting you move to other stages such as glueing/finishing it will get better.
    Keep at it 👍.

Fascinating insights Robin and the box turned out beautiful. Question, and one I'm sure you've thought about, but Is it worth getting a jobsite tablesaw, even if it's just temporary, to help bring down the time spent milling? Having started with dimension lumber already, then using the bandsaw/jointer to get a 'straight cut' does seem to be adding to your time? Or is it actually not that time-consuming to do? Just curious?

      Thanks!
Because of the years without a table saw I’ve got used to not having one, but you are right. It might become a necessity later on but for now I’m holding out until I have a shop with better access (not a single person door), and the money to afford, a big cabinet saw

Excellent video. Really appreciate the breakdown. Wondering what process you used to establish that hourly rate.

Thanks. I looked at my annual expenses for the business, divided that by the hours I can work, then added my profit. I also kept in mind the going local rates and came down a bit because of my need for work. I’ll increase it over time

Time is the killer . . . guess this is why it is advantageous to make multi-units and sell off extras to make your profit. Great video, the camera work is super. Cheers.

Great Video and project Robin.. I agree that the numbers part is a great way to summarise/conclude a commissioned build, as it would work for anything else.... projects we do for fun would always end in a loss of profit..
