ISHITANI - Making a Kigumi Bed - no glue, screws, or nails -

(Japanese Ash)
The joint of the bed body is called " 腰掛け蟻継ぎ (stepped dovetail joint) ".
This kumite(joint) is used in traditional framework construction methods, and has been used for posts and beams that support houses from ancient times to the present day in Japan. This time, Ishitani arranged the depth of the dovetail for the bed and adopted it.
We also use the same cypress wood that is used for the pillars of the house.
It's built without glue, nails or screws, yet sturdy. The finish paint is walnut oil.

That's one serious pencil sharpener! 15:35 😉 Fantastic and beautiful work! Seeing all of the markups almost makes me want to leave them on there! One of the most visually gratifying parts was watching the chamfer tool make a perfect 45 degree angle on all the corners 😌

Even since I was a young kid, I recognized that there is something about the clean, simple yet elegant Japanese designs that somehow bring out the natural beauty of wood int a shining gem. As I watched this, I was thinking "Wow... one screw up in the placement of a hole or notch, one cut a little too deep or just a bit off could ruin a piece that has a lot of work sunk in it." And the second thought is that that must be a really satisfying occupation: as a craftsman, to produce something like that: no screws, no nails, no glue: it just all fits together, tight and snug: beautiful! It was a pleasure to watch.
