Hi guys, I'm Eileen. In this video, I talked about the money lessons I've learnt in the last 10 years. It always puzzles me that schools don't teach about personal finance and money management. In fact, I was never really taught about how to handle money, so unsurprisingly, I frequented Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Hermes as soon as I started making a decent living. I thought wearing designer brands would mean I'd accomplished something. Now I realise, this couldn't be further from the truth. Having a massive collection of designer bags doesn't automatically make us successful or respectable. While it's quite OK to enjoy luxury items responsibly, they don't define us. So despite what social media or advertisement might portray, the ultimate luxury in life is freedom (and being financially independent/secure).

I have had some very rich clients over the years when I was selling Real Estate. My wisdom tells me the rich get rich by being frugal. Hollywood stars are showy and many are broke. I knew someone who bought luxury and couldn't pay the rent that is addiction behavior. I am not very frugal but I am retired, I am comfortable, content and I have some nice things. It has taken me a lifetime to learn to live within my means. Being happy is a luxury.

True. People want to be like the 'stars' they see on TV and in magazines. I am convinced that most of them have less than most of us. It's a strange addiction but I once bought into that. Now I do spend money on things that give me a bang for buck and not bankrupt

it helps when a store is snobby and rude beyond belief. A LV SA once followed me around the story within a few inches and I would quickly turn around and he would pretend to look at the floor. Uncomfortable feeling = money saved. I'm in my upper 30's and haven't bought a bag in a while because the allure of it all is fleeting

I was a university student for many years and only started working and making my own money at the age of 28, so a pretty late start on the path toward financial independence (still a long way to go to reach financial freedom hahaha). I have been living on a low budget since graduation to this day, and I haven't bought any luxury items except recently I finally got a pair of designer eyewear. I am quite happy with my life despite not being able to afford expensive stuff. Hopefully in the future I will be making more money so that I could afford some nice handbags, but for now, I am perfectly happy without them.

Thanks a lot for this video. “Spend BELOW your means” was such a powerful message for me. I’ve always heard people say “spend WITHIN yours means” but this makes so much more sense. I am a true shopaholic. In a week I can buy at least 3-5 pieces of clothes and a bag every quarter. I will try to strive to do better! Thank you for your videos, they are great reminders on intentional spending.

We need more videos/content like this. The temptation to spend needlessly is all around us. Temptation even pops up in every app on our phones, for goodness sake. I think, like with addiction, we seek any opportunity as permission to continue with bad behavior. Like, if everyone around us seems to be spending needlessly then it's okay for me to, so long as the truth stays hidden. We've also bought into the lie that image is everything. So, as long as I present well with expensive clothes, accessories, vehicles, then they won't see how I'm really struggling financially, emotionally, mentally, and physically. We seek material items to comfort us and bring us joy. But at what expense? We are sacrificing time with our loved ones by working tirelessly to pay for stuff we don't need. And, it has become about living in excess. How many shoes or handbags does one person need? Watching "closet tour" videos recently I hear people say, "I don't really like it, but I bought it because.." Or, "I don't use these anymore, but it's nice just have". Why? Why is this acceptable? Why are we not holding each other accountable? Partly because we are living a lie. And we don't want to offend anyone. I applaud you for doing what is right by using your platform to share wisdom and knowledge. Thank you, thank you.

I attended business university and they never thought (us) students about money mgmt, investment, retirement, living below my means or living a debt free life. My family migrated here to the U.S when I was young and they had no idea about this stuff either and we thought living in the U.S means you will be rich one day and live the American dream. We learned everything the hard way and that money does not grow on trees 🙈. It's helpful to watch videos like this, thanks for sharing.

I agree with you. Their are so many people out there who look rich, but they are broke in their bank accounts.
They max out all their credit cards in order to own nice things.
My finances are pretty good but still I wish I didn’t do all those impulsive buying.
I used to make those mistakes in my 20s, and now in my 30s I shop very frugal and only buy things when I really need too.
I also buy things without my impulsive thoughts I buy things with a better mindset. For instant, I use to buy the next popular handbag in the market without thinking if I’m even going to use it or if it matches things in my closet. Now, I will only buy when I know I’ll use it a lot and it matches more than 10 outfits in my closet. I have to also have an idea in my mind what I buy before I buy it. I also buy my clothes from Goodwill and second hand stores because I know I’ll save a little extra and still get good quality clothing and items at very decent prices.
The older you get, the more wiser choices you make. At least, that is me.
Thank you for sharing this video. You are a breathe of fresh air. 🧘🏻‍♀️

💯 spot on. Living well below our means, saving and investing is how we grow our wealth. As a fellow luxury RUclipsr, I’m so happy to see others put this message out there. I’ve always said, save before you spend. Pay yourself first. Beautiful things are lovely and we are to enjoy ourselves but to do that at the expense of our financial security, peace of mind or future would not be wise. I really love what you said in the beginning of the video Eileen, “If anything, it’s even more important to have a better understanding about money if you have a soft spot for beautiful things.” 👏

Its true. Whats the point of having so many luxury products but have little money in the bank account? The stress and worry associated with having to pay off debts is not worth the short term joy of buying the luxury items. There will come to a point in time where you decide enough is enough and its time to move on to treat finance management as priority.

I am going to start tracking what I spend on because I have seen little things add up on my credit card statements. Spending below your means is a powerful statement in this journey. I have been trying to avoid going into luxury stores even to browse because of temptation. I was going to treat myself to a mini wallet this month after having a rough couple of weeks at work. It was supposed to be for store pickup but it ended up being a hassle because they didn’t have it in stock and they ordered it but it took two weeks to process and by the time it finally came, I had no desire for the item anymore. I was spending lots of time calling and following up at the store and this luxurious treat ended up not being luxurious at all. When it finally came, I ended up getting a refund. If I kept the item, I would have been constantly reminded of the bad customer service experience I had. I have made a resolution to find different ways to deal with stressful times at work like treating myself to one of my favorite foods instead of buying something. Great content as usual.

The key is to buy what you really love, and suits your lifestyle, and respect your left over budget after you invested for future. We never should buy luxury to impress or to maintain a status. Life is short so we need to wear what we enjoy, but we need to be prepare to live a long nice existence… so if we want to fully enjoy it : we better save our money first!😌

I only use a credit to pay for everything. You are protected with regulation z versus regulation e that’s debit card. It’s harder to win debit card disputes versus a credit card one. We pay our balance off each month and we get miles, so that’s nice. Plus I budget like crazy so anything we are purchasing it’s what we already need to pay as well as what we need/planned for.

One good habit to have is to always, always question WHAT is it that you are buying. Are you buying the bag/car/property for the usage it offers or are you driven more by the intangibles ie. The prestige, validation etc? One reason I never bought luxury items is that I don't see the value in spending a four figure sum on a leather bag just to hold your stuff, although I appreciate quality and good design. It just doesn't compute lol.
But great video as always, Eileen!

Well said Eileen. You know what, i am really late to the game of luxury when i watch RUclipsr especially those that had so many Channel handbags but when i watch your video, i feel so comfort. When i graduated and started working and at one point after few years of working, i wonder how can i save. I don't know where all my money had gone every month. Then i decided to get myself an apartment, get the initial 10% from the retirement fund which is allowed here then from there on rent the apartment to help me pay for the mortgage while i am still staying with my parents. Today, i had completed paying off the mortgage and am so happy with what i had did. Now i am married, i still have another mortgage but i will use the rented apartment to off set this one which is the same amount and this is also nearer to my dad's and siblings houses. Now i do have a soft spot for luxury but like you said, "live below my means". So, i will only get a few that i can use forever and many years to come. Yeah, i do attend skill share too using your code which i got earlier. I love it. Will sign up for it once my trial period is over. Thanks for sharing.

I agree that I spend differently now that I'm in my 30's than when I was in my 20's. My priorities changed. I still like nice things, but I would purchase to reward myself for a milestone or achievement rather than a regular basis like some ppl on social media. I have separate accounts and I budget by not touching anything in my business account, so I would use whatever in my business account for major purchases in life. That way I am living below my means. I also want to learn how to invest. Don't know where to begin. Any tips?

Hi Enchantarelle, I personally love watching New Money, Erika Kullberg and investing with Rose. Their channels were good free resources to start with for me. Once you have the basics, you'll have an idea what resources you wanna pay for to learn more. All the best. Investing is very exciting xx.

Eileen mentioned a few books on investment in her video "what I wish I knew in my 20s" I believe it's called. If you have access to a financial advisor you trust, that can be a safe way to invest too

words of wisdom Eileen! I know the spreadsheet is a bit of a killjoy but I know no better way to keep my spending in check. And I think the trick is to key in the expense before and not after it is spent - if the final figure is something you are happy with then go ahead to buy it. I carry my spreadsheet in my phone so it’s an easy dipstick on any shopping day.
