Today Gabe Leigh takes us to Caracas, Venezuela to continue on his mission to catch a 737-200, and in this video he’s flying on the 737-400, in the cockpit, with Avior Airlines. The destination? Barcelona, Venezuela, just a 30-minute hop to the east, where Avior has its main maintenance base. And it’s here that we’ll find Avior’s 737-200, YV2794, 40 years young, which as it turns out is getting a new lease on life, with all new parts and even a very fancy new livery. Stay tuned for next week when we’ll go much more in-depth into all that is going into fixing up this beauty of a -200. It’s not flying just yet, but we’ll get a lot of quality time with the aircraft.
Did you know that several 737-200 classics are still flying in Caracas in full passenger configuration? Including what may just be the oldest commercial jet in the world (with the possible exception of a few aircraft in Russia). But tracking them down is not so easy, and until arriving in the country it was difficult to know which of them were actually flying. What a fun adventure this was, and there are more videos to come, so be sure to check it out, and let us know what you think!
Catch all the videos from Venezuela!

Saludos

Thank you so much for this beautiful video. I am a retired aircraft engineer and was an engineer for CP Air in Vancouver Canada for a number of years..where amongst other types we had a fleet of over 20 737-200s. I believe that at least one of the 200s I worked on is still flying up north in combi configuration and fitted with a gravel kit. Venezeula looks a most interesting and beautiful place....if they ever need old 737-200 mechanics out there I would be very happy in that beautiful weather keeping aviation history alive!!
    Thanks once again.

I was a passenger flying on a 737-200 model from Rochester NY to LaGuardia in NYC. First time I knew such a beast existed.. Got off the ground just in front of a localized snowstorm.. It flew to me reminiscent of older 1960's designs like DC 8 & Boeing 707's. I have some long standing background in military and some commercial aviation, working as an aircraft mechanic for many years.
Anyhow I was glad to get off before the snow hit on a rescheduled ticket, and noticed how distinct this aircraft was. It flew in a gutsy way in my book. I can't say I've flown again on any 200 models (memory not certain of it) but I did fly many many times on 400 models afterward. The 400's higher by-pass model fan jets were much more responsive and those 737,-400's always provided pretty smooth flights, almost like not really flying at all, as I was at the time used to many military flights before this.
And I was always impressed by the 737-200 rare and gutsy ride, something I rarely witnessed on commercial aviation flights anymore.
737's are a long standing Boeing icon.
In afterthought I may have flown again on 737-200's in Alaska in combi configuration. Up there at the time you take whatever the airlines threw at you. I was in the back and on a short flight, probably distracted by my busy schedule.

Gabriel, another great video as per usual. However, I watched with a pinch of sadness. My father was a DC-10 pilot for the now disappeared VIASA and my Mum flew for Avensa, during the golden years of Venezuelan aviation. Back then MIQ airport was the gateway of South America and almost every major airline deserved it. As it was mentioned here, at one point AF had 1 747 cargo, another 747 passager only and the Concorde all flight to CCS at the same time.
The current narco regime has turned Venezuela into a Jurassic park of aviation.

Other airlines like Laser and Aeropostal have installed them in their MD80s, which of course didn't count with them before.

You should go to Honduras and fly on the Aviatsa 737-200, its the last jet aircraft allowed to fly in and out of Toncontin Airport with regular operations. There's no other comparable combination of both airports and aircraft these days, they only fly charter but anyone can easily book a flight with them through HM resorts in Roatan. I flew with them in September 2022, It was an expirience that I will never forget.

I am wondering if and where there is a 737-100 in a museum? It was really quite a bumpy takeoff and landing due to the age of the aircraft and runways. Saludos

I’ve recently visited it (I left years ago) and while it is true it feels better in terms of safety in general, one thing that terrifies me to my core (because I had to suffer it) is there’s absolutely no legal security. Meaning that if you have to go through the legal system for any reason, civil or criminal, you are completely screwed and that’s scary as fuck. Laws don’t matter. I checked the FR24 flight activity for that 737-400, Avior Airlines YV3546, it's got really no flight info, just dates and times, but everything else is blank. Why is that? You'd have to go back to around the end of November is get any more details, but even then they are hit and miss. Anyone know why the flight data is missing?

How do you get to fly with the pilots in the cockpit? Do you have a special pass?

It's something we agree on with every airline individually and usually takes months of discussions and vetting; no special all-access pass.
