Dallas Jenkins' Candid Response to Controversy, 'The Chosen' Legacy

- The creator of "The Chosen," the hit TV show about Jesus and his followers, hopes the series' lasting legacy is one focused on helping people know and "love Jesus more." "We're seeing people all over the world [who are] telling us, 'I know Jesus more. I love Jesus more. I'm reading my Bible more than ever because of the show,'" creator and director Dallas Jenkins told CBN News. "If that continues, there's nothing greater than that."
Jenkins, who spoke last month on the red carpet at the KLOVE Fan Awards in Nashville, Tennessee, also addressed some of the lessons he's learned while making "The Chosen" over the past seven years. "The biggest lesson is surrender always needs to come before positive or negative moments in your life," he said. "I think if I would not have been forced by God to surrender to Him, I don't think I would have been ready for something like this, both the positive and the negative, because I cared what people thought of me."
Jenkins continued, "And, so, it becomes really a superpower when you stop caring what people think and you care more about what God thinks." This shift in perspective, he said, has helped him navigate the ups and downs - and praise and criticisms - that have come along with the monumental success of "The Chosen." Ultimately, Jenkins said he hopes people continue to hold the show to its standards and laurels. "I hope that people like you - friends and fans - will keep us accountable to that," he said.
As for controversies that have occasionally popped up around "The Chosen," Jenkins has generally been remarkably outspoken and transparent, taking to Facebook and social media to speak out and address questions and concerns - something that also has its complexities. "Sometimes it's frustrating, because you wish you didn't have to defend something or talk about something that you think maybe is unfair," he said. "But, at the same time, I always see it now as an opportunity. These are important conversations. We're talking about Jesus. We're talking about the Savior of the world."
Jenkins said these tough conversations and discussions can sometimes be an "opportunity to hopefully show people a different way of conversing." Rather than "hateful" or tribal," he said these interactions and decisions to address topics can be constructive. "The Chosen Season 4" took home the Film Impact honor at this year's KLOVE Fan Awards.

The way Jesus is portrayed in The Chosen has touched my heart in such deep ways and brought healing. Dallas, I love how you handle criticism with such grace and opportunity! Every moment is a learning moment. Thank you for all you and the whole team do in pouring out your lives so He could be made known and loved more!!!!
True, Dallas, and so well said! "...that people know and love Jesus more." ❤✝️
Definitely yes! Even speaking for myself!
But its not the Jesus of the bible, even by Jenkins admission. Its another Jesus. Its a catholic, spiritualist, socially tolerant Jesus.
You can never get enough of Jesus!
My family loves The Chosen. I think a lot of thought went into the show and you can tell the director, Dallas Jenkins, takes it seriously. He's received quite a bit of slack because certain things are not in the Bible but he is very clear that it is biblically inspired and he uses historians to fill in the gaps, so viewers have a better understanding of the culture and experiences of that time. For me, it's the best movie/show that I've seen depicting the life of Jesus and His apostles. Additionally, so many people have come to Jesus Christ just through watching the show. It's amazing to hear all the testimonies.
More people are reading the Word (KJV) of God.
Even though it's biblically inspired, to watch the show is like reading a gospel account of what took place. In my opinion, it's worth checking out. Thank you Dallas for allowing Father God to bless you to be a great blessing to so many.
Thank you Jesus. Thank you Dallas. Thank you all The Chosens. God bless you.
No, just thank Jesus.
If there’s criticism of the show, the people that are criticizing are just like Jesus Christ disciples they don’t understand him. Dallas has done a really good job of making this real life. Jesus Christ is not fairy waving his wand making everything good. We come to this earth to learnto suffer so in the end, we will know joy.
That's what it's all about,to know and love Jesus more.
Thank You Jesus Christ for blessing this person ❤
This is a brilliant answer. Surrender before.
Love THIS and love the show best ever series I of have ever watched and can't wait to talk about it with friends
This show has changed my life, for absolute certainty
Lord Jesus Christ, he is so good!
This show has helped to pull me out of the darkness and has re-strengthed my faith and my husbands. We LOVE jesus so much more we started reading the bible...... Forgetting yesterday starting over today and with the Lord everyday 🙏 Amen
A great message to all people in present times, there could not be a more oppotune time. The "Word" taken across to the corners of the world. 🌹🌹 thank you to Dallas and team.
“We love the same Jesus” -Dallas Jenkins
Perfect interview..👏🙏
Wow - what a humble brag. Any show that adds to the words and deeds of Christ should immediately raise suspicion. It doesn't matter if it gives us the feels - it matters whether it's accurate and True or not.
Dallas speaks the truth - that more people are reading their Bibles; I know I am. I listen to Ce Ce Winans , Joshua Aaron, Paul Wilbur music for home worship. I am at peace. Thank you all for revival!
😂😂😂 yeah I bet you prop up the peterphile rainbow flag members.
On one hand, the chosen has reinvigorated an interest in Christ at a cultural level, and for that I am happy. On the other hand, scripture is how God has chosen to reveal himself.
@@Rocket278 Scripture says God is visible everywhere.
@@Ephisus “thou shall not make unto the grave any graven image”
100% accurate. The chosen inspired me to read my bible more than ever.
@Psalmist6693 nothing... thats a bit of an exaggeration.
@@Psalmist6693can you give some examples? There are a few interpretations that I disagree with that I can live with. But I don’t need to be nitpicky.
I am a big fan of yours Dallas! Thank you so much for this beautiful presentation of Jesus and his life. I watch each episode over and over...Bravo to all of these wonderful actors! ❤❤
I'm a Baptist, & I know that Johnathan, that plays Jesus is a Catholic & there is somewhat Catholic overture / flavor to the series, but when I saw the episode of Jesus walking on the water of the sea of Galilee & when Peter tried to walk on the water & began to sink...& Jesus reached out his hand & pulled Peter up & took him to the boat...I was so emotional & crying with a group from church that were watching with me... that scene was so real & outstandingly done...I just recommend that anyone who thinks that the " Chosen" is too Catholic or like a hundred other " JESUS" movies....I can say wrong!!!! They got Jesus walking on the water RIGHT!! 42 years ago,I was touring the " Holy land" with a group from my church & a church from Houston & we got to go out on the sea of Galilee & I'm telling you, the " Chosen" got it right! It was just like it was 42 years ago!( I know the actual scene wasn't filmed on the sea) I encourage everybody to watch the Chosen! If you're not a follower of Jesus before you watch that scene of Jesus & Peter on the water....you will be afterward! It is just the most accurate & emotional scene so far! I think Johnathan and the cast members are really great! The guy who plays Matthew...he's awesome! his facial expressions are spot on!& his spiritual growth throughout the series is just amazing how he expresses himself as an actor is awesome! He should get an award for his methods!
I like the way Jesus pulled Peter up at took him to the boat. Took him to the boat .... yes twice for emphasis.... he helps us all and brings us back. He walks with us each day.
Don’t give in to ecumenism.
Well said 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
“What people think of me is none of my business.” - 12-step program saying 😊
Wait.. what?? The Chosen is a... "Jewish" show??? Since when was Jesus a Jew and show me ONE single piece pf scripture where He said He was.
Your sarcasm is certainly subtle, I'll grant you that. If you're serious, then I hate to break it to you, but the whole bible was written by Jews, for Jews and to Jews. Jesus and the NT writers were all Jews. We Gentiles were blessed after most of the nation rejected their Messiah.
Saying God forced you to do something is pretty horrible theology.
"Forced by God"? I don't think so...
Even though, I have enjoyed the beginning of the chosen. I find myself in conflict with the way Dallas is portraying Jesus in these later shows as a man who turn His back on His own Disciples. That cold... Why would anybody portray Jesus as a cold human being...?
My faith has grown watching the Chosen, and I just love it .
Thank you for bringing it to TV, thank you for opening our hearts more to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
🙂
Love Dallas and Amanda!
God bless them and their family
That’s the most solid price of advice, care more about what God thinks than anyone else and that only happens when you are in submission to God. Amen!
THE CHOSEN IS LEADING PEOPLE TO THE LORD OF HOSTS,remember what he said at the boat scene and the giant fish haul,he said he would sort them out LATER,JESUS KNEW IT ALL IN HUMAN FLESH,I'VE CHOSEN HIM
That's a pretty profound yet simple philosophy. Stop caring what people think. Care what God thinks. 👍
Lose the chewing gum nefore am interview, Dallas lol and stick to the actual Bible, if you’re going to say this is about Jesus.
❤Yes! Amen
Jesus was controversial in Love…….the Truth……….
I'm curious if Jenkins is a freemason.
He says he wants people to keep him accountable when he’s wrong. Throughout Season 2 I constantly took issue with the heresy and sin being praised, I never got a response even once on social media
Thank you Dallas! I guess I just don't understand why I see such negative responses to 'The Chosen' when I find it such a beautiful show and so very close to the Lord .. follows scriptures so close ... But I guess it makes sense because Jesus says, " they will hate us, because they hated Him first"!
It is not close to the Scriptures at all. There is a lot added.
There is a lot added to help tell the story, but that doesn’t mean they are modifying the details of scripture.
Eden’s miscarriage in season 3 is not in scripture. But it is used as a storytelling device to motivate Peter to walk on water with Jesus. The actual event of walking on water is not changed.
The Chosen is not meant to replace or modify Scripture. It is an excellently produced, artistic rendering of it.
Doesn't follow Scripture hardly at all. The Holy Spirit is the superior screenwriter! Faith comes through hearing the word of God, not all this other silliness.
@@Psalmist6693it could be a Pharisee sentence… 🙄
Amen.
No tribalism or toxicity, open conversation in pursuit of truth and peace
It isn’t a Christian show. Didn’t I see him say Jesus had his faults?
Dallas, you might get to know the person of Jesus so much better if you understood Him in the context of the Hebrew Scriptures. Throw away your manmade Christian theology.
Forced by God to surrender to Him? Not biblical!
This show is one of the best I’ve seen about the Bible but greed is why this show has took for ever and went to court. The only thing that was wrong is them killing ramah. Why would you change the Bible? The first season was done and paid for then when they took donations for the second season which they were making they seen how much money they could get and waited on making it. It went up to 200,000 fast for each episode then half a million then over a million and now more. This is why it’s took this long. Greed
Amen
Without angel studios this show would not big like it is today, thank angel studios, i don't know why they cut the deal.
Angel Studios bretched the contract. Dallas made a video about it if you wanna watch
God is righteous HE gave Angel a start but they did not pay the price that Dallas did to SURRENDER TO BE HUMBLE AND THESE CHARACTERISTICS IS WHAT GOD WAS LOOKING FOR!! NO ONE GET PRAISE EXCEPT GOD CAUSE IT IS THROUGH THE ANOINTING OF HIS HOLY SPIRIT THAT MAKES EVERYTHING ABOUT 'THE CHOSEN' DIFFENENT...THE WORLD WILL CALL IT A SUCCESS ! AND EVEN DALLAS I THINK DID NOT REALISE THE WORDS 'JESUS' SAID 'GET USED TO DIFFERENT' 😮
AMAIZING WHEN ONE CAN SEE AND HEAR THIS AWESOME 'STORY' OF 'THE CHOSEN' IN THE SPIRIT !!!
THATS WHY ONE CAN WATCH IT FOR HOURS AND NEVER GET TIRED IF IT ❤ GOD IS ETERNAL❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I love how he is just chewing gun during this
AMEN AMEN
I had to stop watching it. He thrived on controversy. He departed widely from scripture. Too much. It started out good but veered into the weeds.
You are missing a great show.
How so?
I’m not missing it at all.
@@bjjacobsmeyer4696 it’s a great show, and there’s little controversy other than that pride flag which was some camera guys apparently lol but your choice, I’m gunna go watch the new episode tonight ☺️
i know the show was produced by mormons (i think?), and i know there are differences in some beliefs between mormonism and 'mainstream' Christianity, let's say. but to hear a man on live television say that the legacy of the show is for people to know and love Jesus more, that's enough for me!
I think he’s evangelical. I’m catholic and I like the series. It’s like looking at a sacred image, sometimes it helps you love the Lord more, sometimes it doesn’t, so you have to take the good and spit out the bad, and there’s not anything bad I can think of in it, but people are flawed so it doesn’t always hit the mark perfectly, but boy it opens some very beautiful doors. Catholics believe Mass is where you worship the Lord properly and everything else like looking at images is more good on top of good. Like if they were consumed on their own it would be so insufficient that it would be like idk neglectful, like watching a miniseries about your husband instead of living with your husband, but if you go to mass and watch the show, then it’s like watching a miniseries about your husband while you are literally sitting on the couch together, and you live your whole lives together and have this full life, then yeah watching the miniseries would be fun and might make you learn something you didn’t know and just deepen your relationship. If you have the proper foundation it is really healthy to consume media and art about the Bible, and the mass is the foundation, and I think this series is a good piece of art about the Gospels. It speaks to my emotional humanity lol
@@Aaalllyyysssaaaaavery well said 🫶🏻 fellow Catholic here 🙋🏻♀️
Enjoy the show but the app needs major fixes. Suggest ditching the gum when interviewed.
Religious spirit , and judgement have been around since beginning of time! Truly sad people can not just put their time into relationship with Jesus ! Then their tongues , and typing would not get them condemned!
Do not turn to the right or the left
Awesome interview comments Dallas!
Well said Dallas.

The show is extremely unBiblocal. Stay away from this heresy garbage
So cool that he’s with a jewing gum 😅

"I believe it is important to watch The Chosen as though the Bible didn't exist."
-Dallas Jenkins (creator of the Chosen)
Disturbing. 😐
That message is loud and clear throughout the series
@@Psalmist6693 Except in the beginning when they said they would be portraying Jesus "responsibly" and then had the byline that they were bringing the "Authentic Jesus." The actual INTENT changed. They stated one thing, then proceeded to do another, especially Season 4 when we get the "We always planned this storyline" to submarine faith in the real Jesus Christ and proceed to stray even further from the actual gospels. Facebook exchanges from DJ became increasingly heated/nasty/divisive... clearly not of someone open or willing to take reproof all in the name of "artistic expression" or some such. Now the subliminal in the last episode to their gift shop, professing it to be a mistake.... yet a few episodes ago, they fully removed SEVERAL scenes and have refused to explain why only leaving people to feel they are out of their minds that the scenes were never there in the first place. They play with people's minds, faith and all for $$$$$$ and ego exercise for DJ.
Outstanding interview ❤🙏
Right on!
Amen Dallas
I’ve tried many times it just keep saying my username is wrong and my password is wrong. Just don’t know how to fix it.
i made a new email, and used it to make a new log in. it worked. try it
it's not for me, I don't like how they add to the scripture for story-telling purposes.
but, if it has helped others in their faith and encouraged them to read the Bible then that's good.

Great question!
@@sirthomas7473 Why is it even a question?
@@annme7638 Dallas' theology has been all over the place. Linking arms with Mormon "brothers"
@@sirthomas7473 Actually his theology has not been all over the place. His understanding of and the show’s portrayal of Jesus, the one and only Jesus, has been solidly Bible based from the start. You obviously have only been listening to the selectively edited video clip found here on YT.
Dallas - don’t chew gum in public!
I am a gum chewer. I do it because I don't want to offend people with my dragon breath. Maybe he just had a pastrami sandwich. That might have been his last piece of gum and he didn't want to ditch it and then be without for the rest of the interviews.
Why be so picky? He’s doing the Lord’s work. Don’t worry about the gum in his mouth, but the plank in your eye.
He is so great
I was pleasantly surprised by this show. When I first heard about it, I thought, "Oh, another show about Jesus." I think most films/shows about Jesus present Jesus in a very stilted, formal, unrealistic way that make them hard to watch. But The Chosen feels so real. The characters are human. They are brought to life. And it has deepened my understanding of what Jesus's ministry on earth was probably like. Excellent show. I highly recommend it!
Dallas, I'm so happy you've made the film "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" I so enjoyed this book when I read it to my students years ago! Thanks.
Man I love the chosen and am glad Dallas created it but I have never had a show be more difficult to watch. Finally got the season 4 just to delay episode 8 due to a presidential debate? Between this and the lawsuit it comes across as profit and views being whats most important. Not the story
you are a terrible director. your show is boring.
Is there a medical reason that Dallas always has something in his mouth, while talking..?? Gum or Snuff) Tobacco.! 😮
