  • Back to basics! Annie Sloan shows how to use Chalk Paint® to paint a small, shiny brown side table.
    Step 1: No priming, no sanding, straight to the fun part! Start painting with Chalk Paint®.
    Step 2: Once dry, apply a second coat of paint.
    Step 3: Once dry, apply Chalk Paint® Wax with a brush or lint-free cloth.
    Step 4: Finished! It's really that easy.
    Annie Sloan invented her revolutionary furniture paint, Chalk Paint®, in 1990 and hasn’t stopped refining and improving her formula since. There's no need for priming or sanding. Chalk Paint® is as easy to use as opening the tin, dipping your brush, and applying paint to furniture! Annie wanted to create one paint that could achieve several different techniques and finishes - from creating a textured chippy look to achieving a smooth modern finish, or even creating a wash. Annie's paint has minimal VOCs and is very easy to work with.

    I SERIOUSLY just had my jaw drop..!!! Annie Sloan??? what the BLEEP? Annie, only if you knew the crafters that ADORE you! And how you are such a hit all threw the world. I get "tips" from my cousins from Sweden and I live in Vancouver Canada.! loll I went today to a store to buy your paint. Got home and it was all dried up... :( That's the reason why I was on youtube ,,, hoping I can find a way to bring it back to life. ( the paint ) Here in Canada, for a 887 ml of paint.. is almost $40! Worth every penny I have. I like to restore brilliant piece's... and re sell. me doing so.. It's not only calming.. but puts food on the table and pay my bills and medications for my rheumatoid arthritis and Lupus. Thank you for making things so easy for us crafters. Much love. Nikki,

I love to draw and paint so this is right up my alley. I need to get a gray tone for a pretty big metal storage cabinet I have outdoors. It holds my growing gear.. Would chalk paint work for that? I live in humid sunny Florida but it'll be protected a little from the outside elements.

    Yay! I was attending a chalk paint class recently (to add a few advanced skills), and I said that I was sure Annie had wanted to be able to complete a project during school-hours. Nice to hear her say so in this beginner's guide. Also, as one who has arthritis, I do find the AS Brushes very much easier than ordinary brushes. They hold the paint nicely, it goes on smoothly (or not, if you prefer Annie's "every witch way"), and my hand doesn't ache after one item. Am currently on a spree of painting battered old trays for friends for Christmas, each one personalised to suit the friend.

    I just used your paint for the first time and love it! I have waxed my piece and would like to buff it. How will buffing make it look different and how long after waxing before I can touch the buffet and move it into place?

    • @AnnieSloanHome
      @AnnieSloanHome  3 года назад

      You can allow the wax to dry overnight and then gently buff with a soft cloth for a more polished look. Otherwise, simply leave it as is for a more natural sheen. After you’ve applied Chalk Paint® Wax, you’ll find that it will become dry to the touch very quickly, allowing you to move your piece into place. The wax will start to harden as the solvents in the wax evaporate. This hardening process is known as “curing” and is what strengthens your finish and gives it its durability. This typically take between 5 and 21 days. Of course, you can use your newly finished piece straight away, but you should treat it with extra care until the wax has cured completely. Avoid extreme heat and moisture and any objects that would scratch or otherwise damage the surface. Wipe up spills immediately and avoid harsh cleaners and abrasive pads. A little bit of care and patience during the curing period will reward you with a finish you will enjoy for years to come.

    I have never chalk painted but have done a great deal of painting properties in my time with standard paint. What I do not understand is why you do not sand the object first for better adherence to the object. All I can think is that the chalk paint grips onto what ever you are painting. Looking at the little unit you painted it was varnished which to me would be too smooth to paint with standard paint as you could scratch it off even with your finger nail.

    Hello. I am painting two twin beds (headboard, footboard, and frames) which are approximately circa 1930. One bed was stripped and refinished, the other had its original finish. The first coat of paint went on fairly easy (as in the video); however, it seems the wood is really soaking up the paint. I put a second coat on one bed and it was a bit more laborious painting the second coat (I felt perhaps the first coat didn’t dry enough). I waited over 8 hours before applying the second coat to the other bed and I am having the same amount of trouble spreading the paint. I am using an Annie Sloan flat brush. The beds will definitely need 3-4 coats based on the results I am seeing so far. Can anyone advise if I am doing anything wrong. I have painted a dresser before using Annie Sloan paint and didn’t have the issues I am having with the beds. It seems I might run out of the quart of paint before obtaining the coverage I am seeking. Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

    • @AnnieSloanHome
      @AnnieSloanHome  10 месяцев назад

      Hello, our Chalk Paint Wax does not need reapplying, one coat will suffice! If it's a particularly high traffic area, such as a kitchen table, you could reapply after a couple of years if you felt the need to. However in the majority of circumstances, one coat of Chalk Paint Wax will seal your piece for years to come. It's worth noting the curing time, where the wax fully sets, is between 5-21 days, so be careful of your piece during this time. More information can be found on our website: www.anniesloan.com/product/waxes-and-finishes/clear-chalk-paint-wax/
      and on our fact sheet: www.anniesloan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/annie-sloan-chalk-paint-fact-sheet-uk.pdf
      Hope this helps.

    While in Dallas, I purchased a wax brush advertised as “just as good and designed like Annie Sloan’s” for less. Big waste of $$. On my next project, I used that brush. It was a fight from the get go. I told my husband thank goodness my first waxing experience wasn’t using that brush. Otherwise, I might have quit using Annie Sloan chalk paint altogether.
    I get her paint and brushes as Christmas presents. The best gifts, and I’m easy to please.

    Hi Annie. Thanks so much for your tutorials! Love them. When would you use wax instead of lacquer and visa versa?

    • @AnnieSloanHome
      @AnnieSloanHome  3 года назад

      It really is a personal choice. Both our Chalk Paint® Wax and Lacquer will seal the paint and protect all of your beautiful paintwork. They also make it wipeable/water repellant. I personally love using my wax to finish furniture as it gives a beautiful mellow finish. Although my Lacquer is designed for use on floors and outdoor surfaces, some people find it to be slightly more durable on hard-working interior surfaces, such as a kitchen tabletop or cabinets. It's available in both matt and gloss, and it's also UV resistant. Consider reaching out to your Annie Sloan Stockist to learn more about each and to actually see and feel the differences. You can find your local Stockist here: www.anniesloan.com/stockists/#/.

    I buffed my piece after I added the wax, but I don't like the look of it with the shine. Is there a way to make it a matte finish again? Can I remove the wax and then add it on again? If yes, how?

      Hi Darlene, if you add another layer of wax without buffing back it should give you the finish you are looking for.

    • @AnnieSloanHome
      @AnnieSloanHome  4 года назад +2

      Just until the paint is dry. An easy test is to place your hand on the surface. If it feels cool to the touch, it's not dry yet, so leave it a bit longer until it feels room temperature.

  • @goodvolks2know372
    @goodvolks2know372 2 года назад

    I like hearing that she mentioned not needing to sand, but does anyone know: 1) how long to wait between painting the second coat of paint, 2) when you can lay down the coat of wax, 3) when it's ready to then be buffed and 4) how long or often does new wax need to be applied, if at all. Thanks!

    • @AnnieSloanHome
      @AnnieSloanHome  2 года назад +2

      Hello! Chalk Paint® dries and you can apply your 2nd coat in about 20-30 minutes. You can also apply the wax when the paint is completely dry. Apply the wax with a brush or cloth using a sweeping motion, and immediately remove the excess. Buffing is done to add sheen and should be done 24 hours after waxing to allow the wax to dry completely. Applying subsequent coat of wax depends greatly on the amount of use the piece will get. A sideboard or curio cabinet may be good for years, whereas kitchen cabinetry may need additional coats more often. I hope this helps!

    I’d love to try this but I have a dark mahogany bedroom suite I want to paint , including the sleigh headboard and foot board. Are you sure I don’t need to sand and prime and if that’s the case I will just go for it !

    • @AnnieSloanHome
      @AnnieSloanHome  3 года назад +1

      You don't need to sand and prime. However, because your furniture pieces are made from mahogany, you may experience some bleed through, this can be common when using any water-based paint over mahogany. It's best to do a small test patch first. If you notice any pinkish stains appearing in your paintwork, then simply seal the wood by wiping on one or two coats of clear shellac, a non-toxic sealer that will block the stains. Don't worry, this is quick and easy to do, shellac dries quickly and you can soon get to the fun part ... painting!

    I just used white wax on white chalk paint with old white tshirt and it left bits of fibres on it, I've only done one drawer so far, any suggestions? because I do like the look but not bits of fluff 😭😊

    • @AnnieSloanHome
      @AnnieSloanHome  3 года назад

      The fluff is coming from your old shirt, so please put it aside and use a different one. It should be easy to remove any fibres. First, try 'scrubbing' them away with a stiffer natural bristle brush. If that doesn't do the trick, then another quick application of wax will help by 'waking up' the underlying layer of wax, making it easy to remove what you don't want.

      You are experiencing what is known as bleed through. This can sometimes happen on older pieces of furniture. First wipe on one or two coats of clear shellac, right over the paint you already have on there. Once dry you then apply a fresh coat of your Chalk Paint®.

    • @AnnieSloanHome

      Hi, as with any paint you will see brush marks. If you want an extremely smooth finish, you can lightly sand between coats. Don't apply water too liberally as this will effect the finish.

    The material has to be lint free? May I use other type and pls recommend.

    • @AnnieSloanHome
      @AnnieSloanHome  4 года назад

      We specify lint-free as it needs to be something that won't shed fibres onto the wax, otherwise they'll stick to it. Some dish cloths that are not fluffy will work, pillow cases, some forms of paper towels. Have a go and see which work for you.

    I’ve read cautions about wax, and how difficult it is to remove, can another sealer be used, such as a flat polyurethane?

    • @AnnieSloanHome
      @AnnieSloanHome  3 года назад +1

      Our Chalk Paint® Wax is quite safe to use (it's been certified as ‘toy safe’ according to European standard BS EN 71-3) and it's not necessary to remove it should you change your mind or decor and want to repaint with another Chalk Paint® colour. However, we also make a very durable varnish called Chalk Paint® Lacquer that can be used on tabletops, cabinets, floors, outdoor items, etc. It's available in both Matte and Gloss. Hi Annie, I chalk painted my bedroom set dressers with your chalk paint and it looks gorgeous thank you, but I did use the wax so I've been just wiping it with a cloth can I use anything else? How often should I put more wax and buff.

    • @AnnieSloanHome
      @AnnieSloanHome  4 года назад +1

      Hi Dolly, you only need to do one coat of wax and it will be fine. Leave it to fully cure over 2 weeks to reach its full hardness. If you feel it's getting a lot of ware then you can add another coat of wax but that's really a judgement call on your behalf! You can use cleaning products, just do not use anything harsh or with bleach.
