The time travel in this was very much a Prisoner of Azkaban moment. On the current timeline, Kamala was always meant to time travel because her going back and saving her grandma protects everything else that happens in the timeline. Not time traveling at all would have actually created a branched timeline

    • @hollandscottthomas

Yeah, it was a pretty simple closed loop. Which is good, since time-travel wasn't a major concept for the rest of the show.

    • @stephencleary562
      @stephencleary562 2 года назад +9

Building on this, I think what makes the time travel different is that it was instigated from 1947 calling out to the future - it doesn't branch because it didn't go a different way first.
Previously we've had the future invading the past, which creates a new timeline.

I was a skeptic at first but the first two episodes were some of the most artistic and stylized of any Marvel show. The actress playing Kamala is exceedingly likeable and I enjoyed the family dynamics. The cultural aspect also breathed something fresh into the franchise.
That said I wish they would have stayed focused on the core group of characters instead of introducing so many new ones one after the other just to disappear or die right away. The villains sucked. Still one if the better shows

I thought she was over the top, which was perfect. This show had so much more heart than most of the Marvel Disney+ shows. I was pouring happy-tears when her and her dad had that heart-to-heart in the last episode. This show was so positive and every character (other than bad guys obv) were so wholesome.
This show was so much more interesting than the concept would seem on paper, which is a nice shift from the previous shows which seemed to be working backwards from extremely interesting premises.

Yeah the middle three (3-4-5) were not good and made worse that it was such an easy fix. Have the Clandestines turn her away from her family because THEY understand her and support her like her real family doesn't in that moment. Then you have them nicey nice her and take her to Kirachi to open their portal home. Meet the Red Daggers who undermine their link and expose the Clan as being the baddies. Much more natural progression than whatever the hell happened here.
That said all the episodes in New Jersey (?), Or America or whatever are all enjoyable and fun.

I loved it so much more than I thought I would initially but kind of fell apart during the episodes in Karachi for me. Felt like they were cramming too much in and removing the underwhelming villains and the whole Veil plot point before the final episode felt a little deflating

  • @TheDelinear
    @TheDelinear 2 года назад +116

I really like what they did with her powers. The stretchy powers have never looked great on screen. The fact that they managed to keep some elements of her comic powers, but also come up with an interesting new look, I think worked really well.
Clandestine were pretty weak as villains. Fair enough their motivations were pretty cliche, I could live with that if they were just a bit more well rounded and believable as characters. The fact that they've been trying to get their hands on the bracelet for decades, and then they're like "you've got 48 hours to hand it over", it's like woah, chill out a bit. Play the long game, get Kamala's trust a bit - what's the rush? And then they reveal that they did the exact same thing to her great grandmother, so they don't even learn from their mistakes.
I think, instead of having the Clandestines and Damage Control as two threats, given the six episode run time, they should have had Damage Control be the main threat. Have the Clandestines helping her out, win her over, then at a critical point they betray her and she barely escapes, and set them up as villains for the future. As it was, we had two threats and not enough time devoted to the members of either to make us care or establish any real stakes.

    • @budgiecat9039
      @budgiecat9039 2 года назад +1

@@b2thec Its very vague and nonsensical when you think about it unless they say theres some kind of trigger that activates a mutant gene and for her, it was whatever technology in that bangle which was used to create it which my running theory is the Space Stone (Tesseract), which then would make sense because Mar'Vell was using the Space Stone energy to create a light speed ship to transport Skrull refugees to a safe haven from the Kree without having to use the Kree/Nova Corps heaxagon shaped Warp gates (because if you use those, the Kree and anyone else can track you).
And years earlier wa know Hydra was using the Space Stone to creeate weapns and when Red Skull touiched it himself he got yeeted to the planet Vorimir and he would have starved and died there had it not been for the Soul Stone somehow reforming his body compiisition to that of some ghost like being permentaly jobbed to be its presentor or whatever.
And as we know, Captain Marvel got her powers from Space Stone energy + Kree science.
And so then this might explain why Kamala and Carol swapped places all of a sudden.
Perhaps Carol was investigating Kree tech trying to find out whats the deal with that 10 Rings pulsating message, and maybe she got a hold of the other bangle and boom the signals got connected, warping her and Kamala to switch places.
Moreover, we know the Space Stone is one of the 6 Infinity Stomes; the remnants of a dead Celestial, and that Tiamat is also a Celestial who was incubating inside Earth.
So perhaps Mutants are a 'host' of Tiamat. They are his children in sort of a way;; his atoms are their atoms aka X-Men Children of the Atom.
So the bangle, which is comprised of Infinity Stone energy, which particularly is the Space Stone, known for interdimensional and speed travel, triggered Kamala's mutant gene because she is linked like the other Mutants on Earth, to Tiamat the Celestial, by way of evolution, and perhaps Thanos destroying the Infinity Stones, also might have sent off a cosmic ripple of energy that may have also awoken more dormant mutan genes in people over time.
Because we saw the Mutant Ursa Majors (the huge Russian prisoner who lost to arm wrestling Red Guardian in Black Widow movie) but he didnt have his mutant powers of transforming into a giant grizzly bear person, so maybe his mutant genes were not triggered yet since Black Widow is a prequel movie before Infinity War/Endgame.
Though perhaps there are also other older Mutants that found their trigger in other ways like say Wolverine or Apocalypse, Magneto or Prof X. Perhaps they all came into contact with an Infinity Stone sometime in history; remember the Mind Stone was also in Sokovia with Wanda and Pietro and the Sanctum Sanctorium and the Anciet Ones had access to the Time Stone for years.

The Partition storyline was a little confusing at times but a really interesting decision to bring a real world event and tie it into an MCU character. It was also a really cool take that there was no major villain of the show, at least for the first half of the season. • @TobyDeshane

I do, but it's treading into apples/oranges territory. They're very different. MoM was, admittedly, a victim of my expectations. I enjoyed what it ended up being, on the whole, even if it wasn't quite what I had built up in my head through speculation, especially post-WV.
But for me, the real problem is that MoM retroactively made WandaVision lesser. Wanda's psychological terror in WV was nuanced and complicated. She did something horrible, yes, but it made you sympathetic as to WHY she did it. It was deeply emotional. It's why the show, strange as it was, was so successful.
MoM picked up from there, and flushed that sympathy down the toilet. She became irredeemably evil. Turning her into a blunt instrument of motherhood gone insane. As others have noted, she COULD have worked with America to find a reality where the kids were left without a mother. (And Vision is completely forgotten in the script.)
So yeah, it's made what WandaVision teed up a _little less special_. For me, at least.
And oh... oh no... did they name it "Multiverse of Madness" just because it spells "MoM"?
Oh god. I'm just getting that.

I actually loved how she never got her costume til the end, but she did keep getting little tiny pieces, like the mask, the vest, and the bandana. I'd thought she was assembling it as she went along and each piece was personal, but then I guess her mom just bought a more appropriate one? I can't imagine she made it herself in like 20 minutes before the plane came. Or maybe her nani made it?

Kamala was such a charming character in this, a geeky fangirling highschooler who didn't come off as annoying or overly cringe (at least to me), which would have been so, SOOO easy to accidentally do. I think Iman was super charismatic and cute, a little over the top but in a way that's totally fitting of the character, she did great.
I think I care about Kamala's future in the MCU more than I care about most everyone else's at the moment, even though I never read the Ms. Marvel comics and we're just meeting her, and the mid-end of the show got really messy. I certainly care about her more than I care about anything Dr. Strange is doing.

So does the Noor give her powers? It seems that way but then why did she need the Bangle at the beginning. Then does the Bangle unlock her powers? It can't be that either cause Kamran got his at random from his mom staring at the sky and dying. What does her being a mutant have to do with anything???? Sadly it feels that this show hs a similar issue to lots of D+ shows so far where you could just remove most of episode 4 and 5 and make this a well paced movie. We don’t need any of the red dagger or clandestine sub plots. Kamran could have just shown up with similar powers to Kamala
They will likely make most of the NuHumans into mutants in the MCU, just keeping the royal family as actual inhumans. The big push in the 2010s for inhumans was a reaction to marvel not having the film rights to mutants

Hey guys, the "closed loop" time travel remark gave me an idea. What if Kamala's time travel saved her grandmother for another timeline. Rather than being a closed loop, it's a self-replicating loop. A different Kamala had done the same in the past, creating our Kamala's timeline, and our Kamala created a new timeline that generates another Ms. Marvel...where that Kamala rinses and repeats, ad infinitum. So by the time The Marvels comes around, we could have and endless supply of Ms. Marvels.

The Ms. Marvel time travel is different cause it involves the bangle and the powers of the Noor and there is an inciting incident in the past that brings Kamala there (Aisha essentially summons Kamala to 1947 when she says "What you seek is seeking you.") which is why the time travel in Ms. Marvel is a closed loop and not an alternate timeline situation like in Endgame, where there is no inciting incident and the Quantum Realm is used.

The art direction is creative, the visuals are stunning, the cast is charming, the musical score is amazing, and I personally was introduced to a part of world history and culture I wasn't familiar with.

I thought Iman Vellani was so charming and terrific, a really great new addition to the MCU. The main cast they introduced were all great and fun and they made all of them a joy to watch, and I thought the way they incorporated Pakistani culture and aesthetics worked pretty well overall (its a little thing, but I actually really enjoyed they exchange between the sheik and Damage Control in Ep 6, where he gives a quote about not needing anyone on his side, just knowing that he's on God's side, and they brush it off as "some Quaranic quote", and then he flips it on them by revealing it was an Abe Lincoln quote. Again, just a little thing, but as someone who pays a lot of attention to writing, I thought it was really well done.) Plus, as a life-long New Jerseyan, I love to see me some good Jersey representation.
It is very funny to me that we have reached an era where big budget Disney/Marvel superhero properties are actually putting the 90s X-Men musical sting in, like its catnip for everyone who ever even thought "what if Wolverine met Hulk?"
Edit: Also, I very much agree that the biggest problem with the new crop of MCU shows is that they are too short. From the best to the worst, they've all, in my opinion, needed at least one or two more episodes to really get their story together. It really showed in the Clandestine, which I had a feeling were going to be villains as soon as they were introduced, but boy did they speed-run right through a pretty cliched narrative and character beats. The portrayal of Kamala, her friends and her family sold it for me, but there was just not much there when it came to the villains. Still excited to see where they take the whole thing next.

This isn't a new type of time travel. Endgame explained it very poorly, but it was explained in Endgame, Loki, and Agents of SHIELD that when you travel to the past, you don't automatically create a new timeline. You do actually travel back to the past of your own timeline. But if you make any changes while in the past, that creates a branch in time, creating a new timeline, so that you can never change the future you came from. But if you fulfill the events of the past instead of change them, your time traveling to the past won't change anything; you'll just have always been there.

Fun fact: the lead DC guy is also in No Way Home when they arrest SpiderMan. In NWH he says “Fury has been off world for a year”…now in this he’s hunting supers?
How would he know Fury was off world if he wasn’t a Skrull? The woman who disobeys his orders in this is likely a bad Skrull. This clearly is leading into Secret Wars.
    Spoiler for Ms Marvel
The agents discuss how dangerous kids with powers are because they can’t control it. If Kamala is in fact a mutant as suggested by the theme song it’s entirely possible that Xavier’s School for Gifted Students will fill that role of teaching kids to control their powers. Also Kamala could still be Inhuman as it’s described in AOS that it’s similar to mutants except the gene is activated when they come in contact with a specific material, like the bengel, that triggers terragenisis.

There was an article that said exactly that because Ike Perlmutter was pushing Inhumans and didn't want to promote a property they didn't own he was scaling back both X-men and Fantastic Four comics. I remember that happening at the time and though I didn't read comics I thought it was incredibly stupid since arguably the movies would get people to buy comics, not the other way round. But I'm not Ike "all black people look the same" Perlmutter so what do I know. Anyway, the co-creator of the comic said the original idea was to make Kamala a mutant but they couldn't because of stupid decisions made by an idiot (that's an editorial addition, they didn't actually say that) and were told to make her an Inhuman. This is actually a great example of how the movies can differentiate themselves from the comics and it puts the original author intent back in place. It's a win-win. Except for anyone who is under the misapprehension that comics need to be recreated perfectly for live action even though that has never and will never happen for the most part. Or anyone who is obsessed with how things have been done in previous versions and that's how they should stay forever. I know one RUclips content creator who will for sure complain that they changed Kamala from Inhuman to mutant because she's obsessed with Quake from Agents of Shield. You know who I'm talking about if you've seen her videos.

Late to the party but I finally finished the series and I though it was very very mixed, and definitely less than the sum of its parts.
I liked the casting which felt was on point, and I liked the exploration of Kamala's family history as well as the immigrant journey her family had to make. I liked the high school setting in the first two episodes. Unfortunately after the 2nd episode things really took a downward dive. Characters are introduced and never fully fleshed out, motivations seemingly shift at the drop of a hat, conflicts arise that could have been solved if the people spent 1 minute to properly talk, and everything just seemed really rushed.
The side characters apart from Bruno never get any real development. Nakia and Zoe seem to have several episodes worth of content just cut from the series. Kamal's mom instantaneously switches from being over protective and over bearing in episode 1, to being okay with allowing her daughter to go to an unsupervised house party. It felt like her mother growing to be more understanding was meant to be running arc over the course of the show, but it seemingly happened overnight.
The entire Clan Destine story line could have been cut with minimal impact on the overall story, and I think their inclusion should have been saved for season 2. What little purpose they serve is just to give a vague and undefined explanation for Kamala's power which never gets any deeper than "powers come from another dimension" which in turn makes the additional revelation about being a mutant feel even more unearned. The addition of yet another world ending threat felt unnecessary in a show that should have focused on family and acceptance.
Did I hate the time I spent watching this show? No, it was enjoyable enough. But at this point Disney can't afford to continue pumping out mediocrity with their biggest properties. Their premier content that ties into the big MCU films shouldn't have the same writing quality as CW teen dramas. Still, I think the cast is great and I look forward to seeing them shine in better shows or films down the road.

I didn't think I was going to like it. I was not at all paying attention to the release like I was with something like Loki etc. I just figured Ms Marvel, even as a comic character wasn't necessarily aimed at me, and thats fine. But I had some time and had it on in the background, and I actually think its quite decent. There is some nice visual flair to it. It feels quite different to a lot of marvel stuff, which honestly, at phase 4 is worth quite a lot. Its a little bit wobbly at parts, but its got some genuine heart and I actually learned something from it, which I can't say of a lot of TV these days, much less superhero stuff. I'll admit I had no idea about India's history with Pakistan or how that country came about or the religions involved etc. I don't really love the glowing crystal power addition to her but I'm still working through if thats just my knee-jerk nerd reaction to things not being like I'm used to in the comics or if I can come up with some actual reasons for that. I'm a huge X-men fan, I never really cared about the inhumans, I don't care if they are not getting used in the MCU as a label. It was a little bit of a strange place to find a mutant X gene reference, but I'll take any scraps I can get. Overall, pretty good.

I really enjoyed the show, despite its many flaws. I looked forward to each next episode. I also feel like the flaws would have been negated by more episodes that gave the story lines and character arcs more time to develop, or by streamlining the story to fit nicely in the allotted episodes. So much of the character growth just felt rushed, like her mom being super critical and protective of Kamala and displeased with her mother until a two day trip to Pakistan where she did some light chores and uncharacteristically allowed her daughter to roam freely through an unfamiliar city. Then she was very excited and supportive of her daughter becoming a superhero fighting a bunch of guys with automatic firearms while not wearing any body armor. Very rushed and inauthentic character growth, but generally a very fun show.

My thought on the time travel is how it originated. You can't go back and change your own past, and have it affect your present. But she didn't go back in time so much as get yanked there. There. The time travel was initiated in the past. She wasn't going back and changing anything, she was just participating in Aisha's present, in something that had always happened. So Endgame rules really don't apply.

Before this whole MCU collapses in on itself, I need a scene where Korg, Groot and Wolverine interact and a rock, paper, scissors joke is made.

I enjoyed this show way more than I thought I would. I loved the insight into Pakistani culture, absolutely loved all the characters, and loved the actor's portrayals of them!

I just want to say, the instructor was at fault. He didn't check what gear she was in before moving off.

You made me realize that Annihilus could be the villain in The Marvels! I think Annihilus could be so cool in the MCU

I love having a place in RUclips where people love the show, the internet is full of hate now, also dimensions and universes are treated differently in the MCU

This could have been a coming of age story with a trip to Pakistan. But the clandestine, time travel, & DOD was too cramped. Plus in trying to rewrite her powers, they did the Same-Powers-Different-Colors trope. This was supposed to hype us up for a stronger Captain Marvel story

This series had great character moments but was light on action. Over all I liked it. My 11 year old son loved it.

Wasn’t surprised with the lack of action. It’s more of a character centered story and it’s a lower budget show with a young cast.

@@moonwhooper I wouldnt even say the action, but the show lacked an interesting conflict and that came mostly as a product of a weak villain

@@moonwhooper it's a comic book show. A certain level of interesting or exciting action is expected.
