This is still a good, rough way to look at the best performing movies of the year but you gotta remember that the studios get a different take depending on the country and deals with theatres so unless we have actual studio figures movies are making a lot less than the gross minus budget minus marketing. That's why Bond needed 900 mil to break even. That and the three marketing tours lol
Yeah, it's generally somewhere between 2-3x so you want at least triple your production budget for your film to be a success. I think the 900m figure for No Time To Die is definitely high - 800m is a more reasonable estimate even with additional marketing but when you factor in streaming (it has done very well recently) and brand sponsors which particularly applies to James Bond. It also remains a long term asset for the studio which they generate royalties from so likely it was still a positive investment long-term.

We all know that Red Notice would have been number one if it had released in cinemas. After all, it was streamed approximately 182 billion times on its first day alone!
I absolutely LOVED Venom 2, it was fun as hell (to be fair I saw it with my best friend with literally nobody else in the theatre, so we were chatting and cackling the whole time), and I will NOT apologize for it!!

F9 assuredly wasn’t a good movie, but watching it was one of the most fun movie experiences I’ve ever had. I saw it with 7 friends and it was a blast. I probably would’ve walked out of that theater with a far worse impression if I saw it alone
My bf and I have a tradition of going to see the F&F movies because F&F5 was the first one we saw together and we thought they were silly fun. But man, we laughed our asses off when they took the car into space, we couldn’t stop laughing and no one else in the theater was. I think we looked like maniacs.
Calling it now that I’m 2022 the #1 movie will be doctor strange multiverse of madness in which doctor strange must fight his most formidable villain, Corn of Coblin.
I seriously don’t get the overhate for Black Widow. I quite enjoyed it, not great by any means but is no way one of the worst films of the year compared to something like Venom 2
I was hoping for something a little more grounded, a fun action packed spy/espionage type movie but alas they still managed to crowbar the same Marvel formula in there. Also, I’m not sure anybody remembered to tell the director that Black Widow _doesn’t_ have superpowers. The amount of times they walked away from explosions and huge car wrecks with barely a scratch got really distracting after a while.

A. It already is great, both venom movies are campy, corny, and fun and they’re not meant to be taken seriously. I’m totally fine with that, and I love how goofy and fun they are. 8/10 movies to me. Film is subjective, and this corniness is the shit that I love. B. It doesn’t need to be R rated, since they’re not adapting the dark and serious venom, they’re adapting the goofball venom and that’s completely fine.

I wish Snake Eyes had done better. As a kid who had to sprint home from school every day in the 80's to catch the cartoon, I really enjoyed this one and felt it was the best live action attempt so far.

Mitchells Vs the Machines. Not sure how it did money wise but it's a super fun and heartwarming film, and really showing that Sony (with Lord and Miller) are pushing animation

Historically superhero movies tend to have a lightly higher percentage(so a lower earnings more in the 1.4-1.6 billion range), but movies depending heavily on nostalgia(star wars, jurassic world, etc) tend to have lower percentges so really it is very hard to place a good estimate for it.

I think what helped a quiet place 2 is that you can’t really illegally stream it until someone has readable subtitles in your language so you kind of have to see it in the theaters or else you have no idea what’s going since there’s so little speaking lines

I think what helped a quiet place 2 is that you can’t really illegally stream it until someone has readable subtitles in your language so you kind of have to see it in the theaters or else you have no idea what’s going since there’s so little speaking lines
