Hi Tommy, appreciate you checking the video out dude. Yeah, both are great, slightly different voicing, with the Nailbomb being a bit more “metal” but definitely not worlds apart :)
Silo has been designed just 2-3 years ago at the time I’m writing this, while I’ve got my Alnico V Nailbomb from 2005 (yes I was amazed by BKP very early). This shows the quality level in designing a pickup voice by BKP. BTW In 2005, I emailed Bareknuckle for some advices, and Tim in person were the man to the other side. He was (and still is) so dedicated and customer caring.
Absolutely mate, BKP always puts out quality products. And for sure, Tim comes across as someone that puts a lot of care into his products and customer service, I'm yet to find one of his pickups that I don't think sounds great 🍻
Just have to say I love the way you do your comparison videos. Its great when everything is so clear - exactly what you're comparing in a big colourful font, seamless transitions so we can hear the difference straight away, excellent variety of original content tailored to the products you're comparing. And there's even timestamps and full mix/isolated versions. Literally couldn't get any better and its evident how much work you've put in, I'm surprised to see you have under 1000 subscribers. Just subbed myself, as someone that is going to be doing their own drum (my main instrument) and guitar videos soon as it's a part of the music course I'm doing atm, to start building a social media presence, I can understand that every sub helps and hopefully you get a big break yourself!
Thank you so much Luke, really appreciate it mate, that’s extremely cool of you to say. Indeed it takes a bit of work, but I find it difficult to really hear the differences in equipment without being able to go back and forth between the sound samples on the fly… very pleased you like the format and thank you for subscribing, like you mentioned, every subscription helps :). Best of luck in your path to creating content my friend, seems like a very wise thing to include in your music course.
Great variety of tones and both pickups sound awesome. The coil split sounds great too so they can do everything like you said and demonstrated. I am thinking of getting new pups in my solar so should look into these. Fantastic work as always mate
Thank you so much mate, appreciate it! Absolutely, both pickups are great, but excel at slightly different things - the coil split tone on the Nailbomb has to be one my fav tones at the moment. 🤘
Hi Tudor, I agree, in this particular demo they cut through the mix a bit more, even though I really love the feel of the Silos. Cheers for checking the video out mate
As someone who owns both, love both, the silo bridge have A LOT more bass then i feel this video showed. Maybe i feel it more playing my silos, lower res peak. The neck on the nailbomb also feels better to play imo slightly more compressed. Its a close call, i say depends on your amp both are awesome, total win win.
For sure mate, I also feel the Silo has more low end, I don't use a lot of low end on my tones, but you can totally feel the difference while playing. As you mentioned both pickups are excellent, if I had to say the Silo really reflects Bea's love for organic and fat tones while the Nailbomb is more precise and slightly "colder" sounding. Never tried the Nailbomb neck pickup, I'm sure it sounds awesome.
100%. I have Silos in my RG650AHM…ash body/maple neck should be quite bright & snappy…and yet with the Silos it’s imprecise and super bassy. I can dial it out with the amp to an extent but will eventually replace them.
Unless you are a seasoned guitarist or an engineer, the difference in perceived tone is nominal, no one but you are going to know the difference after postproduction or stage levels. I have both and can say from my experience is, both sound great but the Silo is responsive to hands and NB is a touch brighter and steadier compression.
Yeah, the differences in pickups tend to be very subtle indeed - and totally agreed, it is most noticeable when you're playing them back to back. Your description of both pickups lines up with what I've experienced, both pups are excellent for sure. Cheers for checking the video out 🍻
I appreciate your response, so many times i try to contribute my opinion only to be "lambasted" by the poster because they took offense somehow. I do not have a channel nor do i intend to but have 30+ years playing guitar, recording but somewhat less gigging, Sub'd and thanks again.
And I really appreciate your feedback and subscription, very nice of you :)! Your view regarding pickups and their impact on a mix level is totally valid and I welcome it 🍻
Was looking Gina comparison of those two pickups a while now, since I wasn’t sure which one to get. They are very close to another, indeed. Probably more of a feel thing. The only true difference I noticed was the split sounds. There, the nailbomb wins. Didn’t thought that, tbh. Think I will go with the NB, because it will be in a Strat… Great video!
Thanks mate, appreciate it! Indeed, they’re not that different, the Nailbomb has a bit more aggression and brightness to it which I definitely think helps when you split it 🍻
Really enjoyed this. Been considering a BKP for my Fender sixty six for a while now. Funny how the Nailbomb reminded me of Coheed and Cambria and sure enough when I looked it up Claudio uses them in his Explorers
Thank you so much mate, appreciate you checking the video out! That’s awesome, had no idea Claudio played BKP, Coheed has some great tones on their records 👍🏻
Absolutely fantastic video and music. It’s just made me order some BKP’s!! I’m going for a set of cold sweats in my explorer and nail bombs in my Ibanez. Hopefully I can’t go wrong with those! I don’t suppose you have a tab for this song? I f’ing love it!!!
Thank you so much Phil, really appreciate it mate. I haven’t played the cold sweats yet, but they sound fantastic on all the demos I’ve heard. As for the Nailbombs they’re just great, very partial to the Alnico version. Unfortunately I don’t have tabs, sorry mate, extremely cool you’d be interested in learning this tune though, thank you!!
@@gabriel_guitar I love it. The song is amazing. Drop C#? I’m going to start working on it right away. Timmy suggested the Alnico ones so will go with them for sure. Keep up the great work. Very happy I stumbled across your page.
@@philhodson1675 thank you so much mate, it really does mean a lot! Indeed, this one is drop C# :). The guys at BKP tend to be spot on with their suggestions, I'm sure they'll sound awesome on your guitars 🍻
You hit the nail on the head with this haha. I'm a broken record now, but damn dude you have very quickly demonstrated that you are doing the best gear vid demos out there, in my opinion. I was a little surprised that I confidently preferred the Nailbomb here. It is tough to put into words, but it feels like the Silos are just missing something. I am talking only on a relative basis and these are small differences, but the Silos seem a bit muffled, bloated, lacking in dynamics, and a little choked out compared to the Nailbomb. It is definitely close and comes down to personal preference, but you have helped me to finish my decision to give the Nailbombs a go and see if they work even better for me compared to how well the Holy Divers have done for me, even though I am not doing a lot of metal anymore these days.
Thank you so much my friend, it really means a lot! I feel that the Silo could be better suited for an alder body rather than a mahogany neck through guitar like my Solar. As you mentioned it can feel a bit bloated and undefined in comparison to the Nailbomb straight out of the box, but I’m sure with a little tweaking in the amp settings it could get very similar results. Very happy the video helped you with your purchasing decision, the Nailbombs are an awesome set of pickups and can do more than metal for sure 🍻
@@gabriel_guitar I have been on the same page as you regarding the Silos. Have an un-installed pair that I had ordered still sitting around originally earmarked for two reactively brighter and thinner sounding guitars (Kirsel Aries Swamp Ash w/ Evertune and a Aristides 020). I think the Silos would have made a perfect counteracting pairing for these, but I ultimately decided they were just not the right guitars for me from a tone perspective (although they were my two favorites from a playability perspective). Now if I could get the feel and dynamics from the A-bomb, with some borrowed mid forward EQ from the Holy Diver, with a more vintage hot output, I would have my perfect rock all arounder pickup. Something is telling me this might be the True Grits or Black Dogs, both of which I shamefully also have lying around and uninstalled currently. But the A-bomb keeps calling to me, and I need to give those a go before I dust off the other options that are getting neglected.
@@Tiger1016. Wow dude, on paper the Kiesel and Aristides sound like a lot of fun, but I get ya, if you're looking for something more vintage and full sounding, I can imagine those being on the brighter end of the spectrum. So far the Warpig has been my fav pup from them so it's an easy recommendation from me, the Juggernauts are a close second (they sound fantastic on basswood body guitars) and handle low tunings like a champ. The Black Dogs sound like a great pickups too, I reckon they could be a good option, seen a lot of folks using those across multiple genres. I recently got a set of Mules should be fun too for more vintage sounding riffage, doing my very best to not use them as an excuse to get a Les Paul to try them out, but it's proving to be very difficult :D!
@@gabriel_guitar An LP style guitar seems to almost always be a must for most people, and I have found my home there with a PRS SC594 however it almost never gets the love it deserves. Funny thing is I was overly sensitive to brighter guitars for a long time, but then I fell in love with a PRS Hollow Body II with maple neck and fretboard. It is almost an all maple guitar, but the hollow body and 25" scale warms that up to a perfect degree and the guitar has a lot of snap and bite while still being balanced. The Aristides is obviously bright, and it would be killer if I was still writing metal stuff. It has Juggernauts in it right now, but I think the Silos would have been a relatively better fit with the Holy Divers probably being the best. The Aries was kind of an unexpected surprise, aad I believe the Evertune bridge is the primary thing to blame. It is actually not too bright and the EQ of it is quite nice aside from lacking in the mids some (scooped Swamp Ash). The issue with it is the guitar feels very mushy, lacking in the snap/bite/cut/twang you would expect from a guitar like this. The HBII is a stellar option for funky kind of popping the stings stuff while the Aries is worse than the 594 in this department. The 020 is good for that kind of stuff too, but it is lacking in depth and body for it. A fun new venture I am running off to is a 3x P90 guitar. I have fallen hard for the Fishman Fluence Greg Koch P90 (tried the Reverend Gristlemaster). I am in the middle of doing an install on a Reverend Jetstream 390 (Korina body, bolt on maple neck, tune-o-matic bridge). And this effort has reignited my interest for the Fishman Fluence stuff. Did not enjoy the Kieth Merrow set when I tried them in my Aries, but now I am thinking of trying out a Classic set in my PRS Chris Henderson, and if that works, I would route the middle himbucker slot to drop in a Fishman P90 for a unique HPH setup. I that does not work, then the Pig 90 or a Suoermassive HP90 is what I have been thinking for the middle position.
@Tiger1016 for sure, I had a couple of Les Pauls in the past but ended up getting rid of them as they weren't the "one", I have a weird love/hate relationship with Gibsons, grew up playing my Epi Les Paul from the 90s, and I'm yet to find a Les Paul that has an identical neck profile to that one which is on the chunkier side but not quite 50s style. I had a late 2000s PRS Singlecut AAA which is one of my deepest gear regrets, should have never sold it, it was a very special instrument. I agree regarding your Aries, I reckon the evertune is what may have caused the lack bite, they tend to smooth out the transients/attack. I mean I love evertune, but there's a bit of a tonal compromise there for sure, at least on all the guitars I have with them, specially on neckthrough/setneck style guitars, I find to be less noticeable on bolt-on style guitars. Funny you mentioned the Suoermassive HP90, just installed it on the neck position of my Solar, sounds amazing, my first experience with P-90s and I'm truly impressed. The Fishman Fluence Greg Koch P90 sound fantastic too, would love to give them a try at some point, even though I haven't been impressed with the Fluence line-up yet, like you I wasn't too keen on the Keith Merrows that came on his sig Schecter (ended up selling it due to the neck being too thin and pups weren't to my taste - much preferred the SD Nazgul/Sentient set that came on KM MK I), also not a fan of the moderns. The classics, Will Addler or the Greg Koch p-90 do sound great on all the clips I've heard though. Good shout on the Pig 90 or a Suoermassive HP90, that'd be a killer combo.
Thank you Alex, appreciate it mate. Difficult to say, for straight up metal rhythm I'd go with the Nailbomb as it just cuts through the mix and has a very tight feeling to it, I also prefer the split sounds on it. For everything else I'd probably go with the Silo, it's a very versatile pup and love how it sounds and feels for leads in particular. 🤘
Thank you Pedro, appreciate it mate. It’s the Neural DSP Soldano boosted with the Hexdrive (Fortin Cali Suite plugin). Happy to share presets if you have these plugins 🍻
Got another question, I’m considering a solar with an evertune. What do you think about them? Do you think it affects tone? I see you set it up to allow bends, which is what I would likely do also.
I think it does affect tone but not necessarily in a “bad” way, the benefits of having a guitar that’s always in tune are very compelling. I really like the Solar I have mate, it’s a lot of guitar for the money. You can bend easily, the feel is slightly different but I believe you won’t notice it within minutes.
They were closer than I thought. The Nailbomb is a bit brighter but they both sound great.
