- Lovers of Power Rangers and Super Sentai may have asked this question many times: why doesn't Kamen Rider get adapted? Aside from the existing adaptations, there must be a reason why we haven't seen a new Kamen Rider adaptation in a while. In this video, I dive into what I personally think are the challenges of adapting Kamen Rider, and, if it can be done well, which series I think would work the best.

Another thing to factor is Toei. The money they usually ask for so someone can work on a rider season is very expensive. Especially for some of the more popular seasons. It’s one of the reasons we haven’t gotten a lot of them released on DVD over here. So it’ll be the same for adaptations too.

That's a very good point, Toei has historically NEVER been the driving force in pushing their properties into western markets. Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball, One Piece, Digimon, etc, were all largely handled by licensing companies on shoestring localization budgets, perhaps because the Toei tax was so darn high.
Maybe the western branch of Bandai can make the adaptations (if they’re still a thing)! Not only do they have some experience with western television and what we’re okay and not okay with, they also (probably) have quite a few VAs that could make decent riders and know how far to take the changes without ruining what the original was trying to show!
Why wouldn't they want to sell it worldwide. Doesn't make any sense do they not like money?
I feel, like kamen rider W, could have potential, for an adaptation. As the idea of the antagonists being like an family doing crime ring thing and having an detective like show could help make it stand out from power rangers
I think I heard on Marcosatsu the reason why we barely get Rider here in America is because one show/season can have three different rights holders at any given time and it can vary from show to show.
The other reason is probably that most seasons cost 200$ to produce per show, each of those distributers would have to pay a lot for each season, the movies are easier to distribute, if they were cheaper we would of at least gotten the whole Showa era on American DVD's by now.

I think that the market for Kamen Rider and really any toku season isn't with the "for kids" adaptation that Saban/Hasbro has been taking PR down. I think that as we've seen with the growing digital age, kids can see they are being pandered and talked down to. And as nerd core culture becomes more widely accepted, the market value of adult and kid fans are pretty sizably comparable. Tsubaraya's current approach with Ultraman of just dubbing it straight for media is a good attempt but sadly it'll be a while before dubbed live action is a more accepted form since theres a lot to work on. However, just adapting the story with western actors would be the better approach. Even if they arent the most beloved, we can see the reach western adaptations of anime have compared to their originals with the casual market. Not to mention, theres a real issue of the footage becoming outdated with time. Kabuto and Fourze are good choices, but 2008 and 2013 footage probably wont look the best on a 2024 screen.
Agreed! They really could be expanding their ability to tell stories if they had more faith in the cognitive abilities of their audience base 😭

I don't think the age of the footage is too much of a roadblock. After all, Hasbro were able to adapt the 2012's Go-Busters in 2019 and 2020.
I feel like Kamen Rider Zero-One could have huge potential too. The concept of humans and machines living together in harmony sounds amazing hell make the final antagonist the leader of an anti-machine life group then you got a banger plus it makes way more sense to adapt the first Kamen Rider in the Reiwa era
Like Everything Else in Hibiki , Kiva , Fourze and Wizard is Criminally Underrated
I actually had an idea for a sequel series to Kamen Rider Dragon Knight, the series I chose to adapt was Kamen Rider Blade. A few ideas I've had for the series would be:
1. The main group of riders would be college age (early 20s the youngest) and they would be working at a mechanics body shop and like I said be in college.
2. The gear used in Kamen Rider Blade would've been early prototypes of the gear used in Kamen Rider Dragon Knight built by Eubulon, stored away because it lacked the DNA security functions that the Dragon Knight Rider's gear used.
3. The undead would've been the results of unethical Karshian expiriments on the citizens of Karsh and Ventara during the war between the two worlds.
4. We would have background on the two planets as well as the mythology/theology of them, with Kuuga, Agito, Gills, ZO and J serving as the main Gods of the Ventaran religion and the Hibiki riders serving as their angels. On Karsh's side, Shadow Moon and Another Agito would've been the main two gods of the Karshian religion with the Darkroaches as their servants.
5. Pre war-Ventara would've be like Earth but more advanced, think of Blade Runner or Cyberpunk 2077 but without a majority of the corporate corruption running things. The planet Kasrh would be would be this indutrialized, militaristic, authoritarian Hellscape where right makes right with alot of influnences from Paul Verhoven's version of Starship Troopers in terms of its society.
6. We'd see the backstory of General Xaviax as he was a shock trooper of the SHOCKER divison in the Karshian army with his nickname being the Black Ghost and we see him rise though the ranks.
7. BOARD would be here but they would be the R&D/Black Ops division of the No-Men and the acronym would be (Bureau Of Alien Research And Devlopment) instead of (Board of Archaeological Research Department) as in the original series.
8. General Xaviax would've been dead at the end of Kamen Rider Dragon Knight, so his Daughter would take over as his successor and continue his mad ambition to rebuild Karsh regardless of the futility as the new General Xaviax.
9. It would be dark with more mature themes but nowhere near grimdark, less Amazons or Black Sun and more like The Flash season 2, Legends of Tommorow, Power Rangers (2017). Dark but still tounge in cheek fun at moments bassically Power Rangers but for people my age who would've been kids around Dragon Knight's release but now have grown up.

I would like to see an american adaptation of the Great Leader of Shocker with him serving as the equivalent of Dark Spectre of Power Rangers.
I thought the japanese novel of Kamen Rider Dragon Knight is the continuation of the series. Second, do you think the Earth counterparts of Len and Kase would make appearance in Kamen Rider Blade because their Earth counterparts never make any appearance in the show, although Len's Earth counterpart makes appearance in the Kamen Rider Dragon Knight japanese novel but not Kase's Earth counterpart.
@@michaelsarmiento3057 I was actually unaware that there was a Japanese sequel novel to Dragon Knight, I will have to check it out later. Also what's Len's and Kase"s earth counterparts are like? I could work with that concept by adapting elements of it.
@@michaelsarmiento3057 That's what Xaviax is in a symbolic sense. As you know the original Great Leader of Shocker always came back in a diffrent form with a diffrent name, he is this undying imbodiement of pure evil. My idea is that even though the body of Xaviax is dead the legacy of his mad ambition, his evil still lives on in hearts and mind of those who emebrace it, becoming in a way a new vessel for him.
I feel like the next adaption might be mixed but enjoyable

Kamen Rider Kiva
Another main thing to point out is how Dragon Knight was well recieved by it's target demographic, it's just that it got a bad timeslot and was treated poorly by it's network (ironically RPM would suffer similar treatment the same year. Poor Bandai had to market two edgy adaptations lol) so not that many people outside of pre-existing Rider fans even watched it.
Though I feel like Dragon Knight would serve as a decent starting point. Just find a platform and get the license to re-air Dragon Knight and continue adaptations afterwards. While it was (accidentally) similar to the Ranger season that aired the same year, both were trying to appeal to older boys with darker themes and atmosphere, I feel like it would land better in a landscape where most kids shows tend to be bright and colorful, especially if the demographic is going to be a slightly higher compared to for example, Cosmic Fury which Hasbro. As you pointed out the west tends to favor an edgier tone. The show does still retain tropes you'd see in Rider stories, so it would serve as a decent platform.
But this is where my idea kinda gets tricky, but I think it would work if executed and marketed correctly. But I'd say use the 40 weeks Dragon Knight is re-airing to adapt Saber as a direct sequel season. And then later Blade as an epilogue season. You are correct in the notion of Saber's gimicks being... well questionable even for rider. Though having the audience be hooked on pre-established characters could lend to people being more willing to give it a shot. Another potential drawback is how bright and colorful Saber is given it's a Reiwa season. While I do think if it was given a similar amount of effort as Dragon Knight whoever's producing the show could find a way to incorperate the Early Heisei moody atmosphere, it would kinda be a tonal shift from Dragon Knight at least visually. But at the same time it could potentially work to kinda introduce the audience to the more colorful aspects of Rider. Kinda get them used to the concept for future seasons down the road. And then Blade could potentially in a sense go the opposite route. Lean into the moddy atmosphere and edgier nature of Heisei Phase 1.
While it would kinda make sense to have the two Early Heisei seasons go back to back and there are benifits (coincidentally I did encounter another comment about using Blade as a direct sequel lol), Saber personally fits better as it's well... the suit's a litteral dragon knight mid-season power up aside. As well as allowing for a wider range of experimentation right away. If it doesnt do as well, Blade's adaptation would essentally be there to pick up the pieces. There being only 4 riders in the show would serve as a budget same measure in case a Saber adaptation does end up losing money, and Blade has the same moody tone of Ryuki's footage so if the audience doesnt respond well to the bright and colorful nature of a Reiwa season, it would basically course correct and give people wat they want.
Plus having a trilogy of seasons with a continuous story could basically act as Rider's Zordon Era. With the Blade adaptation being an epilogue functioning as an introduction to the anthology format. Something that Power Rangers has had mixed results depending on the region (example how MMPR is still popular in america, but other seasons did well in Latin America or Eurpope).

I loved Dragon Knight. The plot was much better than the Japanese version. The transformations were excellent. If a DVD or Blu-ray version ever comes out, I want it.
@@johnnymason3265 Personally Dragon Knight is on the same Level as Ryuki. Both try to acomplish different things and both are just good. Not amazing or horrible just good. Dragon Knight is a more showa-style story while Ryuki introduced the grey morality of the Heisei Era
Not "how" to adapt, but "why" to adapt!!
I truly think Kamen rider has a chance, And have a great possibility of becoming its own franchise. And maybe some time down later down the road, There could be a crossover between Kamen rider and Power Rangers. Linking them together just like they were in super Sentai and Kamen rider. Possibly revealing that Kamen riders and power rangers share the same multiverse.
In my Opinion, _the Perfect Season of Kamen Rider to Adapt_ for a New Generation in the West is *Kamen Rider Zero-One,* and I'll explain Why...
• First Off, _despite what you've said_ about the Insectoid Helmets being somewhat disturbing to some people, I feel that Starting *a New Western Kamen Rider* series would *Require some level of Relation to Previous Attempts* to Localise the Franchise, to _invoke enough Nostalgic Emotions in those who Know about Kamen Rider,_ so *they'll easily be able to jump On Board as a Primary Demographic.*
• _Zero-One_ was created as the First Season of *the Reiwa Era of Kamen Rider,* and _wanted to invoke this very sense of Nostalgia in a Modern Style,_ and is thus the best place for another Western Kamen Rider Franchise to Begin *without having to Remaster any Older-Era Video Clips.*
• _The Progrise Cartridges_ are *one of the Least Complicated Gimmick Devices* made in Recent Years, and _could potentially be Simplified even More_ if was Necessary - there *weren't as many different Variants* created as in Other Seasons, and still had a Stylistic Function _that made the Toyline Desirable despite the Simplicity._ This is the sort of thing that *could Easily be ported to a Western Audience with minimal Changes to reduce Costs!*
• The Storyline is one that _is Currently hitting Home hard in the West_ - *_a Potential A.I. Apocalypse:_* Between having *Lifelike Robotic People* walking among us and _deriving Skills from Generations of Humans that learned the Art, matching those Masters within Days;_ those Same Robots someday _Malfunctioning via Shoddy or Malicious Coding_ and *using those Skills to Destroy Humanity;* and _Greedy Corporations Intentionally expediting the Downfall of their Species just for a Short-Term Profit_ - *All these things are happening in Real Time* *_RIGHT NOW!_*
...Well, maybe not Actual Humanoid Robots doing these things, but _the AI that'd be used in them!_
• Because of these Present-Day Events, a Show like _Kamen Rider Zero-One_ would be able to show how with a Mindful Approach to how the Technology is Implemented, an A.I. Revolution *doesn't have to be Something that is Guaranteed to Kill Humanity* - it can be designed to work Alongside Humans, learning how to Feel, and _Learning from the Flaws of Humanity to avoid Following the same Path,_ rather than *_just Deciding to Kill all of Humanity for their Flaws and become Humanity vX.0!_*
This is the Biggest Reason *why Zero-One should be getting an Adaptation before Any other Season,* but all my Other reasons tell _why It'd be an Entertaining and Lucrative Season to Adapt Overall..._
*There are other Reasons* why I think this would be the Way to go, but these are the biggest and most Important. With the Insanity going on Stateside at the Moment, a Show like _Zero-One_ might *be just what the Westerners Need to ease their Anxiety a little...*
Something else that has always been something that I think about is how the theme music in the Sentai and Rangers is very different even though it has the adaptation aspect. Maybe that could be a future topic?
Yes! Honestly whenever I look at theme songs for American vs Japanese shows, the style and industries are so different 😂 definitely great food for thought!
If a Build adaptation ever sees the light of day, Willem Dafoe would make a damn good Evolto.

Here’s kind of how my Tokusatsu exposure went. Power Rangers, then super sentai, and then Kamen Rider at around the same time as sentai, and finally in 2020, after I heard that this other show, Ultraman, was getting a simulcast with English subs on Tsuburaya’s RUclips channel, that’s when I started watching Ultraman. I really don’t have any interest in other Toku besides “The big three.” Now, almost 5 years later, I am starting my Ultraman Z collection. I was too busy enjoying the show to start collecting the toys.
They should make any KR adaptation they make TV-14. Maybe an introduction to the reboot plans Hasbro has for PR. It’d be nice to remind American PR fans that there are canon “solo heroes” in the PR universe. Not likely but it’d definitely be nice to see. Leave it to the devs!
Yes! And clearly they’re not opposed to including the likes of Jiraiya and Gavan in their adaptations, but if they could have full on focuses that would be cool!!
As much as I would really, REALLY LOVE to see another western Kamen Rider adaptation, there are a lot of factors that made me rather hesitant or mixed about it.
For starters, I believe the current cultural climate in the west is still not safe for this to happen. Heck, it's absolutely NOT a safe haven for any pop culture franchises to thrive.
I've seen a lot of western pop culture franchise that has been deliberately being ruined by corpos, investors, and even their own rabid fans to the point of beyond repair. They're all being poisoned by dozens of bad products that completely lacks sincerity towards the craft and only focused on making a narcissistic statement of the writers' own inflated ego.
It would only leave a bad taste for the Tokusatsu fans were it also to happen to a Kamen Rider adaptation. The west just severely lacks the same cultural appreciation or commitment that Japan has, at least from what I've seen so far. Not to mention, the western society's mindset is constantly being ruined by either the government or the corpos themselves, and I feel bad for the younger generations to live and being conditioned in such chaos.
Secondly, looking back at past Kamen Rider adaptations, Masked Rider's issue is that Saban just DON'T GET what makes Kamen Rider special in the first place, nor did he even bother to see what makes it so different than Power Rangers/Super Sentai and it resulted the Masked Rider being a half-assed discount Power Rangers.
Meanwhile, Kamen Rider Dragon Knight didn't receive enough marketing push from CW's TV Network, despite how it was 1000% (pun VERY intended) a far superior product than Masked Rider when it comes to quality and original content.
See the pattern, here? Both ended up being screwed by their own higher-ups, being the creator and the TV network respectively, who lacks enough commitment to understand the craft that makes Kamen Rider what it is.
Thirdly, money speaks and let's be fair, that's how it's always been. Very few to none could meet Toei's demands of adapting their Kamen Rider seasons since this would be a bilateral joint venture.
And I would say, Saban and his company could've met that requirement and he could've been the best choice to adapt Kamen Rider seasons IF ONLY HE WASN'T SO OUT OF TOUCH WITH HIS AUDIENCE OR THE MODERN TOKUSATSU HERO TROPES ITSELF.
And those are my grievances. There's still more that I wanna talk about, but I'll post it in my next comment later.

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but an adaptation of Amazon riders on prime video might either work or be a bit too much in the “dark and gritty“ direction.

Personally, I'm just fine with Kamen Rider being this niche interest thing in the west. I'd rather Toei just focus on getting Kamen Rider more legally available in the west (kinda like Tsuburaya with Ultraman).
What you said about America preferring "dark and edgy" is pretty much true. Hell, I'm pretty sure Hasbro agrees with you. Why else do you think PR is ditching Sentai?

Also point taken about the lightsabers 😂 I can’t recall where I saw this, but I remember that one of the Ninja Steel sword toys was put on like, this top dangerous toys of the season, so that’s why I generally have that inclination 😅
Okay, so I talked about my concerns and grievances for a western Kamen Rider adaptation before, now I'll talk about a possible adaptation should everything goes smoothly.
So here's my rough idea; what if instead of adapting popular KR seasons, we could have an ORIGINAL western adaptation of a Kamen Rider series itself?
You see, if we look at Ultraman, they have so many adaptations outside of Japan like Ultraman USA, Powered, Great, Ribut, and the upcoming Rising Ultraman. Many of them have distinctive backstories, appearances and power sets that warrants them to become their own Ultra Heroes while keeping the franchise's CORE THEMES at the same time, as well appearing in mega crossover projects like Ultra Galaxy Fight.
My aim for a western Kamen Rider adaptation is to do EXACTLY that. We could pick up the themes from like say, older Showa Kamen Rider shows and mix them up with some of the modern Heisei and Reiwa ones, ranging from suit aesthetics, as well as interchangeable forms and gimmicks.
I can even imagine this western Kamen Rider incorporating action figure toy gimmicks from like say, DC and Marvel toys. In the past, they usually have many action figures that incorporated gimmicks like interchangeable armors and weapons that have never actually appeared in their TV shows and movies.
Imagine if this Kamen Rider adaptation could do that as well, like having the titular hero constantly use those fantastic weapons that would remind us of those toys in order to fight his enemies.
Only this time, ALL of them would appear on-screen and that their designs could be done moderately, striking a perfect or at least enough balance of military-grade power suits while having subtle rule-of-cool themes and concepts underneath its exterior at the same time.
That being said, I think it's best if this western Kamen Rider rely on minimal form or mode changes to keep it more simplistic, like having only 2 to 4 modes as a starting set and 1 final form for the finale.
They also have to be good enough that makes people want to see them together with the rest of Kamen Riders in crossover projects like Kamen Rider Outsiders.
That being said, we have to keep in mind that one of Kamen Rider's strongest aspects, other than their suit designs and action scenes, is their vehicles (especially bikes).
Nowadays, Kamen Rider series have been pretty much lacking in vehicular combat no thanks to Japan's traffic law, in which they capitalize on their form changes and new suits instead.
So here's my million-dollar idea, what if this western Kamen Rider adaptation could capitalize not only on form changes, but vehicle variety at the same time?
Take a look at other franchises like MASK, GI Joe and Masters of the Universe. They have SO MANY unique combat vehicles from whacky to gritty ones that are immortalized into toylines.
THIS is what I've been cooking up in my mind. Heck, I'd say that MASK is the CLOSEST we could get for a western Kamen Rider adaptation. Even Batman and Iron Man's concepts could be adapted into a western Kamen Rider show if we boil it down to high-tech power suits, gadgets, weapons and vehicles.
As for the story, while I do understand how the western audiences are leaning towards the dark and gritty setting as opposed to lighter ones that Power Rangers usually have, I DON'T want it to be just downright depressing.
IMO, both Power Rangers RPM and Kamen Rider Dragon Knight could find the balance between darker and lighter tones, especially when it comes to the tensions of the conflict, its optimistic resolutions, engaging character interactions, as well as the charm and excitement that comes from the action sequences.
I'd personally want this Kamen Rider adaptation story to be uplifting for both children and adults, one where they could take many lessons from, learn to differ between the good and bad, and apply it to their real lives, all the while enjoying the show and buying its toys at the same time.
Now here's the issue; this Kamen Rider adaptation could be made possible PROVIDED THAT this is being handled by the RIGHT PEOPLE and that surely as heck won't be Haim Saban lmao 😂🤣
See, in order to pull this off, a company that handles this adaptation must be ready to constantly pump up new contents like Rider forms, gadgets, weapons and vehicles and include them into the stories as cohesive and comprehensive as possible.
Looking at Power Rangers, I LOVE how they came up with Battlizer Armors, as well as original Rangers and vehicles. IMO it's the BEST original content that PR ever came up with and I want this KR adaptation to do that as well. Heck, even I'd say that Battlizer Armors could belong in a Kamen Rider season lmao 😂🤣
And one more thing, they must also know when to STOP RELYING ON NOSTALGIA.
See, nostalgia itself isn't inherently a bad thing. It could possibly work if they play their cards right. For example, Kamen Rider celebrates anniversaries on specific occasions (overall franchise and era progression respectively) and they would mostly limit their nostalgia content on those occasions so as to NOT INTRUDE the integrity of regular Rider seasons
This is one of the many pitfalls that Power Rangers have, where they kept on pumping MMPR while leaving other seasons mostly unattended. They've been doing this for like FOREVER and often times it hinders them from experimenting with their franchise.
Not to mention, there's also Saban's stupid, tone deaf and out of touch demands/guidelines for making a Power Rangers series. And that still grinds my gears to this very day.
Now if it were up to me, I'd have this adaptation run for 2 or 3 seasons with 1 movie at bare minimum. It would also be based on audience reception and it'd be made with the idea of 'not making more seasons' in mind AT FIRST. If all could go well, maybe even more could come in the future as long as people's demands are still there.
This is the approach that SSSS.Gridman anime took. They made a cohesive anime season, waited for the audience's reception, and it earned them a goldmine that warrants them to create a 2nd season, a crossover movie, and possibly future installments.
And there you have it! ✌😁
The idea of someone finding Ryukendo before Kamen Rider is the most unbelievable part of this video.
I always thought Drive would work well for an adaptation and it obviously can no doubt about that, also fun fact Adness Entertainment the company that adapted Ryuki into Dragon Knight was also looking at adapting Kabuto next but unfortunately it never panned out because Dragon Knight didn't do too well in the ratings however I still hope Rider gets a chance at an adaptation again someday maybe Netflix if their interested it could happen a guy could dream.

Yep, we've could've gotten that, say would you like to do a video for metal heroes as well how do you think each of them could've worked for an adaptation back in the 90s particularly the ones that never got adapted but that's totally up to you.

Hear me out, a dark and gritty version of Kamen Rider Ichigo or an American version of Geats
One thing I see working in an adaptations favor is the bikes. Japan's government has put heavy restrictions on filmmakers ability to shoot scenes with customized bikes, which is why modern Kamen Rider shows barely use them. I’ve joked that a single episode of the original series has more motorcycle action than the entire Reiwa era. An international adaptation wouldn’t have this problem and could freely film their own bike stunts and races as well as include them in fight scenes.
I remember rumors years ago about a third Kamen Rider adaptation that would use the name "Power Rider", which honestly doesn't seem so bad, with different subtitles on it to differenciate the riders (for the three mentioned I'm imagining the names Power Rider Astro, Power Rider Drift, and Power Rider Hercules for names).

one thing i feel like thats holding kamen rider back from an adaptation is how dark kamen rider can get, and given one demographic is kids i dont see that working well for example in OOOs with the main riders backstory and what happened to him

Imo Dragon Knight was not that bad, it was actually my first exposure to rider as a kid. Actually watched some episodes as they came out and i immediately knew i wasnt watching power rangers. Loved the card gimmick, but was never able to get a Dragvisor despite how close we lived to a Toys R Us that had damn near all the Dragon Knight stuff.

Well there is another factor to that. Since Power Rangers has made their mark in American History, fans of a variety of ages of said franchise, would say and I will quote because this has been said a lot. "This is a rip off to Power Rangers." Technically, they're sort of correct, but also incorrect. You see you would have to brief them of the origins of how Power Rangers came to be in America and how they relate to in Japan, that's if said fan(s) would listen to the concept.
You see, as you proclaimed, it did come from another franchise called Super Sentai. However, and I do apologize for debriefing the historical parts of this, the late Shotaro Ishinomori had created Kamen Rider first back in 1971 and with Himitsu Sentai Gorenger airing Four years later. But some fans of the PR Franchise don't want to accept it as the actual fact.
Anyways, proclaiming towards this, there has only been twice where Kamen Rider/Masked Rider has been adapted, and you already know which ones I am talking about. Ntm, some original Kamen Rider Shows, Crossovers, and Films have also been shown within the Western Hemisphere. Did the franchise make a great impact? Not so much. But it did gain more fans to adore the franchise.
To my reason, I believe that there could be a potential ability of adaptation to the franchise. But its more like How would it be adapted, how long would it take, will we have it, and could it succeed?
I feel like Zero-One is the most obvious choice. The aesthetics are pretty much baseline Kamen Rider (animals, technically, Gradshopper lead) but executed with enough style to make it instantly appealing. I think it would be easy to make a show that sells the broad idea of Kamen Rider without being caught up in a specific seasonal gimmick
I'm not sure if I'm the first person to mention this but another adaptation that was attempted was "Kabuto" on Cartoon Network which was a Englished Dubbed and heavily censored version if Kamen Rider Kabuto which I thought was a neat idea.
my first introduction to kamen rider was kabuto... it had a dub in the philippines and after that i got hooked

Personally, I would like to see Kamen Rider Gaim and Zero-One adapted. Those are my two favorite Kamen Rider shows from Japan so far. Kabuto would work as well.
My idea would be an animated adaptation/reimagining of ichigo using elements of the original series, manga, the first/the next and shin kamen rider.
This way will make it vastly different from power rangers and normal kamen rider

My story about my discovery into KR. Yes, like you said. PR was the main source and reason I started my toku journey. Saw Beetleborgs, enjoyed it. But the others weren't catching me. Saw lots of Godzilla too, enjoyed it a lot. Saw snippets of Ultraman but didn't grab me either.
But as time went on up to 2007, PR was coming to an end with RPM as at the time, that was gonna be the finale for the franchise and I wanted more. A friend showed me snippets of Den-O at the time and past ones, but I wasn't interested.
It wasn't until the middle of the year that my friend came back and told me about the next KR series, Kiva. And when he told me its motif and powers were based off of the classic movie monsters? That blew my mind and gave me a big interest. And after looking around for days until I found someone on YT (no longer has an account now) who was gonna upload them.
Waited for when he'll do so, and when the first Kiva ep aired? That was all it took for me to become a KR fan. And I have been watching KR since then and has become my fav media franchise ever.
Also from my perspective, while yes most people comparing it to PR can be rude and filled with negativity. Some do it cause thats all they know. I just go with the idea they never seen much else or heard much else and then I introduce them to it, through the easy YT henshin/finisher videos and see if they have interest? If they do, I show them eps. If not? I leave it be.
And imho, the ones I believe that could work super well as a US American Adaption are Ex-Aid, Build, Geats, W, and Zero-One.
Honestly, I'd be fine with just making official subs and stylize them the way TV-Nihon did before they had to stop. Western versions of most media has the bad habit of censoring/removing/altering content and it sucks when losing context to certain things or finding out something was changed entirely, like in Yu-Gi-Oh! for example. One of the biggest issues have been just getting the content out so that we can actually support the series without having to jump through hoops.
As for adaptations, you'll definitely have to be picky with which Rider to choose to kick start a western version. Appearance will matter at first so ones like: Geats, Kabuto, Blade, Saber, Zero-One, or Hibiki. Afterwards, if things go well, then you can pick the more goofy/less gritty looking Riders like Fourze, Ex-Aid, Gaim, and Revice. With seasons focused on less Riders, the gimmicks and story would have to carry hard since people seem to have a difficult time staying invested when it comes to series that look too kiddy (dumb mentality).
*Here's some ground rules on what I think will narrow down candidates for adaptation:*
1. Anything before Decade is ineligible, due to the age of the footage likely to stick out like a sore thumb compared to the American footage.
2. Anniversary seasons, such as Zi-O and Decade, due to having too many references to past shows in Kamen Rider, are ineligible for adaptation.
3. If the series can't translate to an American audience, such as with Ex-Aid, due to its rather silly aasthetic, Build, due to its overreliance on extremist politics, making it likely to alienate both Left and Right-Wing audiences (And that is especially coming from someone who has Build as his profile picture.), and Gaim being too overly religious, making it hard for it to find an audience with secular audiences, they would be very likely overlooked in favor of more palatable options.
4. If it has too many Riders, such as Gaim, Revice, Geats (Sadly.), Zero One, and Saber, it would be too overbudget for any studio to handle, so they'd be overlooked as well. (Unless they change the suits and half-ass the adaptation like Cosmic Fury did with Kyuranger. But I don't think anyone would want to risk that again, would they?)
5. If a series is currently airing, such as Gotchard right now, it would have to wait.
With all of those rules out of the way, this leaves W, OOO, Fourze, Wizard, Drive, and Ghost as the five that if any company were to bring Kamen Rider over to the states, would be the most likely options. But, if we also consider the overuse of the bug eyes not making much sense, then W, OOO, and Fourze would also be eliminated, leaving Wizard, Drive, and Ghost. But, since the latter's aesthetic could be considered a little goofy, and the one in the middle having scenes of characters driving on the left, which isn't legal in the US, then Wizard, having the most toned-down bug eyes, and an easy to adapt fantasy concept and gimick, then that one honestly seems like the best option, based on process of elimination. Plus, if you gave that show to Disney, they would probably not hesitate to jump at the chance to adapt (And maybe use it as a way to bring back W.I.T.C.H., since the comics now have a reboot series that has had mixed reactions so far.).

Since the story is always subject to heavy changes, as it happens when translating Super Sentai to Power Rangers, I think the most important factor in a Kamen Rider adaptation pitch is gotta be potential toy sales.
I do support that Saber is probably one of the easiest to market from this angle, as the Riders all have a weapon that can actually be used as a make-believe prop, unlike most Rider belts that are usually mostly for show. They can also get creative and do something like a Kamen Rider TCG and promote it with a Decade/Gotchard inspired adaptation.
Kamen Rider can, and should be adapted. Problem is tho, aside from just financial issues/licensing, Power Rangers is a much more recognizable brand. It’s reached far into the mainstream. Kamen Rider is more niche and not as iconic in the west. Now, I think you can ignore this. But brand recognition plays a part in selling something. IMO, we should be doing our own American Kamen Rider shows. Taking some inspiration from Japan. Unfortunately, we in America aren’t that creative.
Edit: Idk, I’d take my chances with adapting Saber. It’s easy and boys love sword toys.
Do want to know what inspires me to do: Maybe I should adapt the story of Kamen Rider Saber with a mix of themes added including war, genocide, generational trauma, immigration, following your dreams, shaping your own destiny, and identity. It's like a mix of The Legend of Zelda and Studio Ghibli with Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Here’s the big thing in my mind in order for a company with the money to pull it off to be willing to take a chance on kamen Raider I feel like power rangers has to be doing well and making money. Think about it if the primary example in the west of this kind of show isn’t doing well why would anyone take a chance on something similar.
Even back when it aired in 2006, Kamen Rider Kabuto's special effects were far ahead of their time. They still look good today.
If you watch any speed scenes in Kabuto vs speed scenes in The Flash TV show or The Flash 2023 movie, it's like comparing Heaven (pun intended) and Earth.
You'll get bored real quick watching Flash run around; but with the Zect Riders, you'll enjoy watching their scenes EVERY time.
It would have been cool if back in the Disney era, they turned Kabuto into a new Beetleborgs season
I think geats have the best chance to get adapted do to the fact that it has 1 based costume with the only difference being the head gears so that different characters and story(s) could be told
Kamen rider can do it but needs to add certain factors:
Being different from power rangers. Kamen rider is basically (majorally) a hero who was made with similar connections to the villain yet uses said power to do good. Also, it handles darker themes than super sentai. Masked rider had promise but had either emotional whiplash or didn't stick out enough to be different from power rangers. Kamen rider dragon knight was better but marketing was bad
I always assumed the reason why we don't get Rider adaptions is because it'd be better or more ideal if the adaption was being done by the same company/studio making Power Rangers.
Just like how Sentai and Rider are both made by Toei, if both adaptations are made by the same studio, you'd have the option to make crossovers or adapt crossover material from Japan. Not that it's absolutely necessary nor legally mandatory (Dragon Knight), but from a business point of view, it might be better to do it that way. Problem is, none of the rights holders seem interested. Saban isn't interested (not after the reception of their Masked Rider), so I doubt they'd risk trying again. Disney eventually became uninterested in Power Rangers; one of the latter seasons almost became a dubbed version of the Sentai, so there's no way they would have invested the money in Rider. And Hasbro, while seemingly interested, is in the midst of rebooting Power Rangers (possibly detaching themselves from any Japanese source material); so there's no telling where their priorities are.
Personally, I am fine with Rider just being a Japanese superhero thing. I hated that the Fuuto PI anime didn't get dubbed or aired on television like the Gridman anime; but since we don't even have an official release of Double yet, maybe it was for the best. I'd rather see more attention focused on bringing more official releases of the Japanese Kamen Rider series here in the west first. But I do agree that if anyone is going to try and make a Rider adaptation popular, it's going to take an investment. It's going to take the time and effort to make the show the best it can be. It's going to take advertisements to make sure people tune in; wouldn't want it to fade away without a fighting chance. The toys need to be passable enough to compete with the DX counterparts in Japan (not necessarily the adult collectables). And if all the elements align just right, it could create a new wave of popular heroes that become a yearly tradition just like Power Rangers. Maybe. Hard to say.
I a rider season that would work really well is OOO, plus the medals would work as a blind bag toy 😊

Another reason is because some of the shows can be a bit dark or too lore wise with a bunch of stuff that's happening like Gaim, Agito, Build a few others as well with the footage because most of them are kinda outdated compare to newer ones

I have plans to do a Saber rewrite adaptation for American audiences. I hope one day it will reach Toei and they realize they are missing out by not supporting foreign markets that import Kamen rider merchandise
i went power rangers/godzilla - beetleborgs - SSSS - vr troopers. knew they were adapted from japan but wasnt until this point i became aware of toku as a genre and got interested in the suit designs. remembered masked rider vaguely and did some research and found kamen rider. finally cracked my disdain for watching subbed content to watch kiva
Oddly enough, I was introduced to Kamen Rider through FANFICTION of all things.
I knew about Masked Rider and then Dragon Knight but I had no idea about were they came from, until I stumbled upon a crossover fanfic that featured Kamen Rider Den-O.
Then I looked up Den-O and have been hooked ever since.
Oh that’s awesome!! Definitely the first I’ve heard of fan-fiction being the gateway, but that’s great it led you to Den-O!!
Not all of the series could be adapted. The Showa Era (apart from Masked Rider), Kuuga, Agito, Hibiki, Den-O, Decade, OOOs, Gaim, Ghost, Zi-O, and (as of this post) Gotchard all have something to keep it from being adapted for western viewers. Showa has too old of footage. Kuuga and Agito have both too old of footage and a LOT of unnecessary death. Hibiki has too much concepts only people born and raise in Asia or Asian communities would understand/enjoy. Den-O is same as Toqger, with a touch of Don Brothers, and people being uncomfortable with the idea of possession. Decade and Zi-O are Super Megaforce. OOO’s chants for combos are impossible to translate in a way that people can enjoy, and it uses a lot of very Japanese locations (plus not everyone wants to see the MC’s spare boxer shorts). Gaim has a lot of public dancing (which isn’t as much of a thing in most of the US), and kills innocent civilians turned into monsters instead of prioritizing a cure first. Ghost has too much Buddhist concept that would fly over the average viewer’s head, and thinks Billy the Kid is some sort of hero (how is beyond me). Gotchard isn’t done yet, so it’s spot here is temporary.
There are also some series with parts of it keeping it from full fledged adaptation, but can still have series/side stories exclusive to the west. They are Drive, Ex-Aid, Saber, and Revice. As dumb as it is, the fact that Drive is a cop will keep him from being adapted, plus most of the available fight footage is in areas that are too Japanese to gloss over. That said, if you use Mach’s Driver and Professor Harlison (the belt’s teacher) the you could make a series about Gou’s replacement in the US after the lovable ding-dong jumps ship. My idea for this kind of series is call “Kamen Rider Maverick.” Ex-Aid uses WAY too much anime hair, even for a live action type thing. Also, I don’t think there are any living actors that could match the passion/insanity put in by the actor of Neo Dan Kuroto Deus. Lastly, most of the stories that the Ridebooks are based off of are stories told to the average Japanese child. There are some, but not enough to make a full series from unless we add our own. Plus we could also have riders that need 2 particular books in order to transform. Revice is an anniversary series, and some of his suits are of series that we can’t adapt. That said, the way Demons interacts with the gimmick is something most children in the US would find pretty cool, plus he deserves his own series.
That just leave the chosen few for proper adaptations: Blade, Kabuto, Kiva, W, Fourze, Wizard, Build, Zero-One, and Geats. Blades is the furtherest back we should push with this particular style of adaptations. My idea for Kabuto is called “Kamen Rider Armored Rider.” Rather than naming the series after the main rider, I name it after the system used. The MC himself is simply called “Kamen Rider Beetle,” and his grandma is Jewish instead of Buddhist. Kiva is easy (except for coming up with a more western name); as long as it’s at least two rings above Twilight, then it’s a success. Since W is detective themed, it’ll draw the fans of Sherlock and Detective Pikachu. Only thing I would add to the series is another living non-villain rider. You did a good job with Fourze, so I’ll leave it be. Wizard has magic, need I say more. Only thing I would add is a Necromancy themed rider, then again I’m a sucker for necromancy. Build was another channel’s top choice for an adaptable rider, and I can see why. It uses neutral locations and a fairly simple gimmick system. Zero-One has robots and robot animals, what more could a kid ask for? Geats could either be a proper adaptation or just taking the idea of the DGP and using completely original characters and new buckles to replace the specially made buckles like Geat IX and Bujin Sword.
And then there was Faiz. Until the unveiling of the Faiz Driver NEXT, it was fated to be like the Showa Era. The suit may be a flop, but all we need is the Driver, the Weapons, and the Helmet and we could probably make a better suit. Plus we could take out the part about the main monsters being resurrected civilians turned into monsters.
That said, we don’t have to rely on just the rider’s currently in existence, we could make our own original riders. They could be based off of thing we would find cool, like a series that is ninja themed instead of just having a ninja themed power up. We can use making an original series as a test to see which studio would be allowed to make the adaptations we want to see. If they succeed, we get more riders. If they fail, Toei can use that as a good reason to never try western adaptations again. I do have my own, though considering it’s based off of mythical creatures like Chimeras and Minotaurs and such, and the the main rider’s based form is spider themed; I doubt anyone would enjoy it (I call it “Kamen Rider Mythos,” if you were interested)!
All of this is a moot point though if we can’t gauge whether or not people would like to see more Kamen Riders adapted to the west, and I have a good idea on how to do so called “Kamen Rider Dragon Knight: Invasion!” This movie would take place after the end of the series, and would tell of our riders having to fight off the invasion of the Karsh people (Xaviax’s boss and comrades). The draw of the series would be both the usage of previously unused Ryuki rider like Abyss, Cerberus, and Papillion; and the one thing Ryuki never did: giving the MC (Dragon Knight) a true an proper final form beyond just Survive Mode! Plus it would also give Survive Modes to characters that didn’t have one in any way before, like Siren and Abyss (I call him Jaws Knight in my idea). Plus it would be a good way to cameo a new rider before the release of his series.

If they gave it the Power Rangers 2017 treatment, I think it could do well adapting the original Kamen Rider story. Shin Kamen Rider proved that it could work with a more serious tone, so all you would have to do is give it that big-budget Hollywood polish. The only real hurdle would be superhero fatigue.
for me better solution would be the thing they never do. To create what i call Kamen Rider WorldWide, a partner ships with studious in different countries to create fresh takes on KR franchise. To see how different cultural landscapes will shape it

Also the u.s. can adapt many of the one shot riders like Shinobi, aqua, G, quiz you know those guy who's armor or belt don't really fit the series they debuted in or who have a someone extension. That's a gold mine of rider content the u.s. can make
If you ask Kamen Rider Dragon Knight flopped because it only aired on Saturday mornings during a time when kids stopped waking up that early sense they didn't have to get up that early just watch cartoons anymore
If they aired it on a major kids network like Nickelodeon or Disney it would have gained the attention that it lacked during it's run
Heck Cartoon Network was doing the whole CN Real at the time so it could have shown it there

Here's the thing to me, right? As cool as it WOULD be for Kamen Rider to be adapted, is it something that genuinely has narrative or thematic merit, in a way that doesn't already exist in the modern western zeitgeist?

I think what makes Rider unique is that it explores these themes through the compound bug-eyes of a Japanese superhero, a blend of tokusatsu storytelling conventions and tropes. Attempts to adapt such for a western audience, I can't help but imagine would largely result in a watered down version of stories and ideas we've already got. The only difference is whether or not it ends up as a filtered version what it's supposed to be adapting, or whether it becomes so filtered it becomes a version of something else that already exists.
There's no harm in such existing obviously, one might argue that a lot of media coming out now falls under this bracket in one form or another, but so many productions, so much time and passion put into them, stuck lingering in this limbo, it's strangely melancholic.
Sometimes, I flip-flop between the first two online stores on the list from the video. I’ve never even been on the Kotetsu toys website. I have, however been on HLJ, and that’s where I started getting my Ultraman stuff, which I actually started with the series after Ultraman Z, Ultraman trigger.

Unfortunately, I can't see them adapting Kamen Rider to the west again. After Masked Rider and Dragon Knight bombed, I'm pretty sure that showed the execs that western audiences aren't interested in KR. But I would be glad to be proved wrong. Also, I don't think they would do Drive because I can already imagine people saying that their kids got harmed because they tried to put a tire around their torso.

I honestly dont think hasbro will attempt this bcz of the style, ive watched power rangers since 2015, so when i got into it and found out that power rangers takes fotage from super sentai and uses that as a template, i had exposure to sentai a few days after ep 1 of zenkaiger aired. But i wanted to learn more and thus i didnt watch zenkaiger or donbrothers beacuse i felt like i didnt know enough and instead watched dairanger, wanted to get a taste of how different sentai can be. Then i watched king ohger and i like it so far ( still watching) but with kamen rider it just didnt click with me.

I think any Kamen Rider seasons that look like Power Rangers are most likely adaptable, for example, Kamen Rider Dragon Knight was an adaptation from Kamen Rider Ryuki, a show which has a main red rider, have a bunch of rider, those 2 facts are probably enough the reasons for a Ryuki adaptation. Some early Neo-Heisei like W, OOO, or Fourze are probably don't look like a Power Rangers season, so with all of that, I think the perfect season for an adaptation is Kamen Rider Geats: Geats has a kinda red main Rider, has a bunch of Rider, cool looking suits, and fun toys. Another season I think could also be a good adaptation is Zero-One: the driver look very futuristic, and also the scanning the progrise key function is very cool, the suits look very good, there are a bunch of riders, and theme is about AI so it's pretty fit with American movies nowadays, I guess.

Ive watched zuyranger alot of goaranger and some gokaiger . But its really hard to get into the seasons. I prefer the team up movies myself. I can't get into kamen rider at all every season I start it's painful to make it through the 1st episode. I like power rangers though
