Everything ended for him in the USA GP with 1 race to go so no, he did not disappeared, he was wining the last race the Japan GP and the engine just blew up. Was 14 at that time. I can still remember it somewhat. I always had an excitement in my body before the quali or race. No comparison to today. Even if there were some boring races back then, that was real Formula 1. If you saw these cars live.. it made your day. Then people say you have to move with the time blah blah. What should you look forward to today? On cars weighing 1000kg that can only overtake with drs. On radio messages. Drivers who can only choose one line through all the sausage curbs. On the next street circuit or on even more zoomed cameras because the sponsors are still not visible well enough. Or the great v6 sound. Idk. Maybe some races aren't that bad but today F1 is all about money.
I had a huge smile on my face watching this. Montoya, what a beast he was in qualy, my all time favourite...and that sound.. This was my favourite period in F1, great cars, on the limit and a great grid as well.
I was there that day, in a grandstand at the foot of Eau Rouge, the weekend had been wet and you can see the track wasn't fully dry for this lap and would have been very green. This still looks mighty 18 years on.
best engine sound of that year for me was the mclaren. That merc engine noise was on a different level. but the best downshift sound goes to the renault

I guess JPM was the most fearless driver in modern F1. Flat out everywhere, always going for the move, just a pleasure to watch. True racing and winning spirit in this guy.
Because they're ancient tech and with this modern engine formula you could extract 1500bhp if wanted, but those WW2 V10 engines you can't do much but listen that yawnin energy wasting pitch sound.
Hybrid-turbos are cutting edge and electric motors. BTW those batteries are cutting edge and very light compared to ordinary BEV-vehicles batteries jos yes, they're cutting edge, oh and not to mention direct injection with jet prechamber ignition..
The cars are 112 kilos heavier than they should be. They get marginally better fuel mileage than n/a engines. Plus, they are the worst sounding engines in f1 history, definitely the quietest. They fly them around the world using a half dozen jumbo jets, yet are concerned about saving 1.2mpg, the six days a month they are on track. I'm all about newer/greener technologies, but adding them to increase the show/spectacle should be the driving force. F1 is a fuel burning, heart pumping entertainment sport. The former heads of F1/FOM have been too politically motivated and hybrid cars are the new peace corps-mobile. If they truly wanted to conserve fuel while improving the show, they should allow fully active aerodynamics.

How Lucky i was growing up with these Beautiful cars with just Epic engines from 1989 to 2005 was just the best time in F1. I was just 12 years old i saw how Beautiful F1 was and instantly fell in love with it and still when i think back and watch the "old V10s" here on YT my Heart just begins to bounce around up and down side to side. (But then it was 2014 and for me it suddenly stopped like a heartattack)
Man.....that was a sensational lap of epic quality!!! Montoya was driving like a man possessed. He was born to race. It's a great shame that his F1 stint ended prematurely as car reliability certainly did him no favours at all, but the times his car did finish races, his fearless passing manoeuvres were legendary. I wish we could have seen him and Schumacher in the same Ferrari as that would have been a battle royal than Montoya would have won.
I love the V10 sound just like everyone else. But I also like the way the cars looked. The wide grooved tires, the interesting winglets, the clean lines. They just looked so kool during the mid 2000's.
