That wasn't Peter Sellers, it was Major Dennis Bloodnock (Mrs) OBE, Knight of the Elastic Garter, Duke of Plin, and the only man ever to go three weeks without stopping. ;D
So funny I spat a mouthful of water onto the keyboard when he squished the chicken the first time! I should know better than to drink anything while watching the Muppets by now :D
He had a lot of issues, poor chap. But he influenced Eddie Murphy's practice of playing multiple characters. Peter Sellers played 3 characters in 'Dr Strangelove'.
"There USED to be a me...but I had it surgically removed!" While this does sound like a line from "The Goon Show", it's probably very close to the truth about this man! He lived through the characters he played.
This was the true Peter Sellers here! The story goes with this episode that Jim Henson wanted Sellers to do the 'wall' segment where Kermit interviews the guest star being themself, but Peter refused saying "I can be anything you want. I can be a singing gypsy if you want, but I cannot be myself." Later in this episode, Peter appeared dressed as a gypsy performing 'Gypsy Love Song'.
Sellers waa possibly the only guest star to not do a "wall talk" with Kermit, because Peter did not consider he had a real personality beyond his comic personae. Here we see that stated openly.
George Harrison on Peter: „I got to know him well. When Peter was up, he was the funniest person you could ever imagine; so many voices and characters. But that was his problem: When he wasn’t up, he didn’t know who he was supposed to be.”
When he agreed to do the show it was on the condition that he not do the segment known as "the wall" where Kermit sits on a wall and just talks to the guest. Peter's comment "there is no me, there are only my characters" was reworked for this skit.
That was brilliant! And it appeared on The Muppet Show? Strikes me more as Monty Python material, or some other venue for really abstruse comedy. Props to The Muppet Show!
I'll never understand the comments section decrying this joke as an inherently tragic and sad thing. The only thing tragic here is the inherent refusal of Sellers' so-called "fans" to accept that his roles were the genuine, real him. That's probably all he ever really wanted out of anybody, and was sadly denied to him to this day.
It's either a mind torn apart or a faustian pact. Whether it's one or both does not make a big difference, for that sentence is the dark reaching for the dark.
Sellers walked off Royale the second his contracted shooting hours were up, even though that left the film only 70% finished and despite the fact his absenteeism and tantrums had meant the movie ran grossly over schedule. He also decided he despised Orson Welles, after the great man joked about his, Sellers' constant lateness to Sellers' face and proved a far more charming presence on set than Pete. So, he refused to shoot scenes he had with Welles with Welles present. You can imagine how that made things go.
Apparently Peter Sellers claimed that there was no such thing as "himself", because he always said that he never existed, he was just a compilation of all the different characters he played. When he said "I can't be myself" I went oh yeah...right but when he got to the surgically removed bit I almost died laughing :) :D~

Fascinating, that he felt be could be honest about himself to puppets, but never to people. As if confessing to a thing was not real.

That "I had myself surgically removed" was a line Peter used many times. So much of humor that wasn't slapstick or physical went over my head too.
