Thanks for the shout out Guy! I love the freehand detail on the forehead. It's fun to get creative to add splashes of accent colour on these marines. I really enjoy the "less is more" sculpting design, it seems to make it easier to be creative with these guys.
0:47 Guy's color-blindness coming in strong: describes "hot pink" and shows a very neutral purple. Kidding aside, this is one of your best speed painting videos!
To be fair, I think we have an undiagnosed cultural disagreement on what purple actually is. I've known folks who insist it lives right on the cusp of pink, others for whom it's right on the borders of royal blue. One day these tensions will boil over and the next big wars will be fought over this...
Since they cant include ball bearings to assist in shaking this is the "official" GW way to shake your paints. GW would never want you to spill your paints so you have to buy more 🙄
You mention the namesake paint being a little yellowy. I’ve often thought a good painting challenge would be to paint a model ONLY using paints that are named around that model/faction. Very Minimal mixing is permitted. And you’re allowed to pick any base coat (spray can stuff) though get bonus points for using an appropriate spray can. Example: Painting an eldar model using only eldar-related named citadel paints. I thought of this idea when looking at the Seraphon named stuff while picking paints for my… well my Seraphon.
Howdy Guy - Love the video, me and my brother have been watching your videos for a while and we have just picked up our first starter kit this weekend. He's going to paint up the Space Marines and I'm starting my Necron army!
Speaking of fixing mistakes: Keep a second brush on hand. When you make a mistake quickly dip it in water and use that to erase the mistake. If you are quick enough you can fully remove the mark with a bit of light brushing. Be patient, sometimes it takes a little bit to get it off, but it'll come off. Don't flood the whole model with water, and wait for that area to fully dry before continuing. This has saved me on many occassions.
For the sake of speed, the freehand gold sketching on the helmet can be simplified or omitted for the bulk of the troops. While Sergeants, officers, and more elite troops get more varied, complicated, or personalized ornamentation. Both to show the differences in rank, and to save your hands from carpel tunnel.
I love this tutorial because it’s cool way to paint Emperors children but it’s also useful for me since I use some of the same paints for my homebrew successor chapter for blood angels
I really love the way you link other awesome builders who aren't getting the attention they deserve. I found Eric's channel because of this video, and it is a WEALTH of information. I am getting into the hobby again, but this time with my daughter (11) and his videos have increased our technical modeling knowledge and our lore discussions.
This was a great approach to a painting tutorial. Clear instruction, additional context when needed, lovely visuals, and nicely catered to all types of painters. Thanks so much!
I really missed these basic painting Videos. I was just about to look up a Video with some easy weatering and there you are with greate Tips for the average human :)
Good video! For gold, try undercoating with a warm-dark brown, it's still 2 coats but brown has awesome coverage and when you see it through the translucent gold it gives off a deep, rich tone.
I like them but it's the opposite for me, I prefer to have them sparsely distributed throughout my Marines. I find it adds a distinct contrast. Mostly use Mk7 and Mk4 helms. None without helms.
tamiya extra thin cement is actual god tier of a tool thin enough to run into all the small areas by itself and can also be used to smooth over handmade battledamage
Thank you so much! I just got myself a Horus Hersy box at a convention to split 50/50 with a friend- They'll be painting Ultramarines and I, sons of Horus. I can likely swap out the colours on this to more appropriate paints for my marines but i can still use the same techniques, i reckon! I'll make sure to send them this video as well. Thank you again!
This video came out at a perfect time! I’m planning an Emperor’s Children x Ultramarines successor chapter and they heavily lean on the EC color scheme. Now I can steal your knowledge and paint my marines up nice and (quick and) pretty!
Hey Guy - this video was just what I was looking for: I've wanted to paint some Alpha Legion in their classic purple and green scheme and the recipe you've shown here looks perfect! Ta!
Low key really good advice there. Make the army that looks appealing to YOU. Too many people put themselves off my comparing. Are you happy with yours? No? Practice. Are you happy with your? Yes? But- no no buts, other people's thoughts on your models do not matter.
Really tempted to bite the bullet and spend the money and get a mini or a few and start painting them, never done it before, and I have no idea where I'll do it or what I need to start, but I've been watching these videos from here and other RUclipsrs and I'm liking the idea of starting to paint minis more and more lol
i went to my local hobby craft this weekend and bought tamiya glue, its an absolute lifesaver over the citadel glue with the annoying stick, never thought to use it to smooth out the pauldrons!
From the story progression of the heresy novels the emperors children are my favorite legion. Although I forever will be an iron warrior I have to say I am tempted to make a small emperors children army. Thanks for the tutorial guy!
Midwinter Minis quick cheaty painting techniques since 2018. Slap that on a t shirt. I enjoy how Dana Howl has become a reoccurring character in these videos.
If you can get ahold of it, try Testors Liquid Cement instead of Tamiya. Flows just as nicely, and is still a solvent base just like Tamiya, but it doesn't cause the plastic to swell and leave weird scarring the way Tamiya does.
Hey guy If you want the gold to end all gold you must get Vallejo metal colour gold+copper and mix them 1.1 it will make the best gold that covers in one thin coat I truly thank vincy V for this info
I can definitely tell that you don’t play space marines with the amount of times you said CHAPTER when at the time of the Horus Heresy they were still LEGIONS Nit pick aside great video! The freehand on the helmet is a great idea and looks sooo good!
It looks like the sort of marine Cadbury would deploy when it inevitably tires of its rivalry with Nestle. The Noise Marines probably blast Phil Collins music.
Looks very nice! 4:39 Instead of having to fight your way up to opacity with rather transparent gold, just mix Retributor Armour with a nice silver like Stormhost Silver. Or use Vallejo Metal Color Gold right out of the pot. In both cases you get a very similar tone, but with much better coverage.
Mix up some sprue goo for the pauldrons, Far better than just putting extra thin on it's own over it. i just use it in place of glue for pain in the arse pieces like that then scrape/sand.
I think the new Horus Heresy range offers the BEST looking rank and file space marines. They have the more realistic anatomy and scale while carrying some retro, old school space marine armor!
Please please please do a can Guy do a vocal version of the theme tune, we all sing the start of it at the end of each video and its good to know that Guy does too!
If I had the budget to also do 30k, I'd go with Emperor's Children. I'd probably sub the purple for AP's Royal Purple metallic paint with white pauldrons.
Guy really showing his colour blindness in the opening. Guy: "In some pictures they're hot pink, in others blue-ish purple, in other quite red" Me, looking at the pictures put on screen over each: Wtf? They are all the same shade of purple. The second guys are slightly darker, but still the same shade of purple
Thanks for the shout out Guy! I love the freehand detail on the forehead. It's fun to get creative to add splashes of accent colour on these marines. I really enjoy the "less is more" sculpting design, it seems to make it easier to be creative with these guys.
Enjoyed the mini scat version of the theme tune way more than I should've at the end

Pouring a box full of citadel pots onto a table takes some serious bravery.
I was just thinking that. How did none of those pots just spontaneously spit out their contents?
@@Metallica4Life92 for the same reason ork technology works. Hatty just believes in the pots ability to hold the paint

Kantor Blue moment.
Death guard green
Eric and Guy would be the hobby crossover of dreams man, all the chill energy in one place
GW: gives almost every youtuber that has ever said "warhammer" a whole age of darkness box for promo
Also GW: gives Guy a *singular* beakie
I think he ditched his GW deal a while ago.

Somewhere on his editing machine guy has a folder with dozens of takes of Dana saying "Pale Sand".
I'm curious how many takes are in that folder.

Awesome! Good luck :)

Tamiya's extra thin is great, but check out the Tamiya Airbush Cleaner - 250ml for the same price as 40ml of the cement and it's the same stuff! :O
That’s interesting
The smell of the cleaner will also knock you on your ass. It’s potent stuff.
I am glad I found your comment before I said the same thing. It's exactly the same stuff, just so much cheaper per oz!
I love how you put the transfer on backwards, even though the FW sheet has decals that you can use properly on the right pad. Ha!

Makes you wonder how many times he does it whilst editing. My guess is every damn video :D

good to finally have a decent guide on painting purple, and in the exact kind of purple I want

Thrilled to see this! I have 40 guys I have to grime and damage up a bit, and I wasn't sure how to do it efficiently! Thanks!
Rylanor the ancient of rites is the best emperor's children marine, you cannot change my mind
You're right, is the thing.
Yay! My favorite chapter in Heresy. Looks great.
Love all the live Vallejo paint gets in this episode 😊🎨

Dirty boots are my favorite detail of your figures!
The purple looks good but that seam line on the pouldren still really stands out.
Never change that outro music, so glad to hear you singing along as well as me.
I want to hear Guy doing an a cappella version of the closing theme. 😎
This can be arranged!
Love the straightforward approach to the speed painting. And with the finished miniature is lovely 😍
THANK YOU FOR FILLING THE GAP IN THE SHOLDER PADS!!!!! no other youtuber has :)

I’ve never been into emperors children but they seem cool
The Third Street Saints approve of that colorscheme.
