Both "Capricorn" and "Metropolis" are Lem and the boys experimenting with more air and space in the mix. The results give us a call back to the more groovy, trippy Hawkwind days. "Limb From Limb" is noteworthy because Lem plays the second guitar solo on the song. Producer Jimmy Miller helmed several Rolling Stones classic albums.

This is the Motörhead (or any) album with the greatest seismic impact. Nothing like it had been heard before. in particular the song overkill was something completely new. I also like that the album is so varied. Back then the best we could do for a playlist was to put one side of an album on repeat (or record a mix tape). Nothing will ever top overkill... and after 10000 repeats capricorn is an acquired taste :-) - Getting hold of this album as a young teenager when it was new and unique means I can hardly pretend to be unbiased thou.

You should definitely check out the MC5. Along with The Stooges, they're considered one of the earliest forerunners of Punk Rock. They were a huge influence on Motörhead, The Damned and most of the early punk scene.
Fun Fact: Lemmy actually briefly played bass in The Damned. There's also videos of Lemmy and Dave Vanian jamming with surviving members of the MC5.

Good choice this is my favorite Motörhead album. Yes it is much slower, but I like that. It has much more of a classic rock vibe. By the way, I love Capricorn. There’s a reason Motörhead included it in their set list for decades and decades. I’ve probably seen Motörhead 12 times .

They're almost like a heavier version of ZZ Top, the punk and space rock really shines through in early Motorhead also. The debut's good too I think you'll like every album after this one. Bomber, Iron Fist, Another Perfect Day, Orgasmatron, Rock 'n' Roll - and of course, their classic live album No Sleep 'til Hammersmith, everything's even better there than the studio versions...

Mine too but come to think of it, maybe Kira will like Bomber a bit less actually because it is somewhat slower overall like the mid-tempo songs here it's more bluesy courtesy of Eddie (who even lead sings a song) so it may be less up her alley if she's more into the faster stuff. In a sense, Motorhead didn't truly become super fast until the Campbell/Dee era in the '90s where it's more metal than more traditional rock'n'roll grooves.

I really love Capricorn. To me the production of that song i not bad at all but rather enhancing the spacy atmosphere of the song. The only Motörhead album that really is badly produced (in my opinion) is their debut ("Motörhead", from 1977) which is overall too quiet.

SO, I really hope this album grows on you, Kira, because it's widely regarded as Motorhead's best. But the way to approach it is to think of it more as a giant, slow lumbering beast - bluesy and, dare I say it, sexy ❤. The tempo is often slow but the energy, if you can feel it, is intense. Almost tantric 😂. Once you stop looking for what you want, you'll get what you need... I'm just throwing in some life advice there, but it also applies to this album 😂. And Capricorn is meant to be spacey 🙂. But even if it never clicks for you, there's plenty of awesome fast Motorhead out there for you too! 😃

Motorhead's "Overkill" is as essential a record as 'Ace of Spades' because it really captured the foundation of the band and their music... They played a number of songs off this album live in concert for their entire career.
Initially, Lemmy Kilmister (vocals & bass) formed Motorhead in 1975 w/ Larry Wallis (guitar) and Lucas Fox (drums)... Lemmy's former band Hawkwind had a label that funded a Motorhead album, but it was rejected in 1976 because they complained it had no bass (Lemmy played bass w/ distortion like a rhythm guitar)
Lucas Fox was soon fired and replaced by Phil 'Philthy Animal' Taylor (drums)... They added 'Fast' Eddie Clarke (guitar) as Larry Wallis soon left Motorhead... The band played gigs but were broke by 1978 and ready to fold when Chiswick Records in the UK offered to record Motorhead's debut album in 1978 - It was the same record done in '76 w/ Wallis & Fox but sounded much better w/ Philthy & Eddie.
Despite the low expectations for the '78 debut album 'Motorhead', the band shocked critics when their cover of 'Louie Louie' became a hit single in the UK... UK label Bronze Records offered Motorhead a multi-record contract soon after.
Musically, Lemmy felt that Motorhead was closer to the Ramones than Judas Priest... drummer Philthy also wanted to play the double bass drums and practiced until the intro to 'Overkill' came together... However, the band was volatile and 'Fast' Eddie Clarke would often clash w/ Philthy and Lemmy in the studio and on the road. But the line-up had serious creative chemistry and the songs for 'Overkill' came together quickly... They hired former Rolling Stones producer Jimmy Miller for the record but according to the band, Miller was a drug-addicted mess by that point (Miller quit the music business soon after) ... Still, a number of classic Motorhead songs came together on the record -
'Overkill' ... 'Stay clean' ... 'Metropolis' ... 'Damage case'... (Metallica's James Hetfield was a huge fan of the record when it became available in the US in the early 80's... American record labels were unwilling to release Motorhead records in the US initially... Dave Mustaine of Megadeth was also a huge fan)
'Overkill' charted in the UK at #24... but an injury forced Motorhead off the road in 1979. So, the band went back into the studio to finish another record and that became the 'Bomber' album that was released the same year... It charted even higher in the UK (#12) as Motorhead returned to the road... Strangely, United Artists who had rejected releasing the first Motorhead album in 1976 opted to release the record in 1979 as 'On parole'... to shamelessly capitalize on Motorhead's growing popularity.
'Ace of Spades' came in 1980 and Motorhead had a top 10 hit in the UK against all odds... Their grueling touring was captured on their first live album in 1981 'No sleep til Hammersmith'... It went all the way to #1 on the UK charts and is considered an essential record in the hard rock/ heavy metal genre.
Motorhead were burnt out by 1982 but obligated to deliver a new album... 'Fast' Eddie Clarke produced the album 'Iron Fist' that year but his dissatisfaction in Motorhead was becoming a negative factor and he was out of the band in the middle of that tour... Lemmy felt that 'Iron Fist' was not a particularly satisfying album.
Motorhead recruited ex-Thin Lizzy guitarist Brian 'Robbo' Robertson in 1983 and recorded the album 'Another perfect day'... but Motorhead fans hated the new guitarist and the album sold poorly... Robertson was out of the band by 1984 and drummer Philthy soon followed him out.
In 1985, Motorhead announced that 2 new guitarists had joined the band - Mick 'Wurzel' Burston and Philip 'Zoom' Campbell w/ drummer Pete Gill... They announced the album 'No remorse' w/ a 10th anniversary tour that had a live gig filmed and released years later as "The Birthday Party'.

Hard Rock in 1978 was never much harder than this, so yes it’s quieter and quite far from the rabid ‘louder than everything else’ beast they became later. But it’s a great album when you get used to the slower tempos and the 70’s production. Songs are generally really good, so it works despite those setbacks. And If you want it faster, just put on ‘No Sleep ‘til Hammersmith’ from 1981, one of the best live Rawk albums there is ;)

Oh yeah! But have you heard 1916 yet? Completely A-typical to their sound. yet arguably Lemmy's best vocal performance.
Maybe the only exception to "Motorhead should jus stay fast".
I also prefer the rawness of the first couple albums. I never got to see the OG lineup live, but I did see Eddie with Fastway just after he left Motorhead.

Yea, Capricorn was poorly produced on this album. It really was a great song when one saw Motörhead live though. There’s a quite good version on the “No Sleep 'til Hammersmith” album. Thx for sharing your Motörhead journey!

Hmm, this album is pretty much perfect from start to finish, I really don't understand how you can dis Stay Clean and Capricorn, or I Won't Pay Your price - but each to their own I guess!

Capricorn was slapped together at the last minute because the record company demanded 1 more song, that's why it feels so unpolished

i find it interesting how you had to take some time to temper your expectations with the tracks' speed (or tempo or whatever), idk why but people tend to say this band is repetitive and plays the same style over and over, when i find them to cover quite the spectrum of speed and styles traditionally in rock and (early) metal throught their discography. not saying that you said this tho, in fact you evalued the songs pretty open minded-ly

I think perhaps you haven't listened to enough Motorhead and have wrong ideas about what they're "supposed" to sound like.

The production is bad because Motorhead were still struggling and only signed on to a smaller record label. They didn't have the money to afford the studio time or personnel. The conditions were better for Ace of Spades. Plus they have said the speed they used during those recording sessions was top notch. After Ace they had the time and money for their next album - Iron Fist. Which has a lot of great songs too. Unfortunately they let Fast Eddie engineer the thing, and it sounds terrible.

The production on this one has always a bit iffy. Also prefer Motorhead with more umph. Sacrifice albulm for example.

I think this is my least favorite album of the classic line-up. My biggest favorite is Iron Fist. I recommend that to you.
