This is the sound of PERSISTENCE... this came out in 1996 - literally, the worst year for a record like this to come out... This was the 90's - grunge and alternative rock were ruling the charts. Bush, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Tool, KoRn, and Pearl Jam were the big bands that year... MTV was ruled by hip hop artists like Toni Braxton, Blackstreet, Keith Sweat, R. Kelly ... etc... Country artists like Garth Brooks, Shania Twain, Deana Carter, etc... were big business... There was literally no place or space for bands from the 80's (or 70's) and a majority of those bands had folded or split... Iron Maiden, Anthrax, Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Warrant, Slaughter, Skid Row, Slayer, Dio ... all saw their newer albums fail commercially and many were playing clubs to survive (Only a few, like Metallica, Aerosmith, Rush, Pantera, Megadeth, Ozzy Osbourne, and the reunited Kiss would thrive & excel...) Motorhead stayed true to their sound and style... they would compromise for no one... It would have been more profitable if they called it quits and got day jobs. But they wouldn't be Motorhead if they stayed home... This was a band that was "Born to lose, Lived to win"... and conquer on the road... 🤘🤘
Oh, wow. Kira, if you like this album, you will LOVE the early albums! Overkill (the second album, or third, if you include On Parole) was Lemmy's favourite and generally also the favourite of most diehard Motorhead fans, and musos around the world, really. So bluesy with awesome bass solos that will have you strutting around like you're the hottest thing on the planet 😃. Check out Stay Clean as a good example 🙂
You’re totally right: Lemmy was a guitarist who by accident started playing bass in 1971 when Hawkwind asked him to play it at a show their bass player didn’t show up to. He stayed on with them until 1975 when he started Motörhead after getting the boot from Hawkwind in the middle of an american tour, leaving him to hitchhike and beg for pennies to get home. He kept the bass, which he always played more like a low end rhythm guitar and that’s primarily the basis of Motörhead’s sound along with his voice. Never really Metal or Punk, but always a kick ass, loud Rockn’roll band that never tried to sound like anything else. I can recommend Lem’s autobiography ‘White Line Fever’. His perspective on things is quite unique in the superficial world of showbiz as he grew up to fall in love with Rockn’roll from it’s infancy. He saw The Beatles in the early 1960’s in Liverpool before they became famous, he roadied for Jimi Hendrix, he did it all before anyone knew what the term ‘Heavy Metal’ meant. Motörhead’s importance can’t be ignored.
To answer your question of what this is.... Lemmy started every gig in the last few decades of the band with the statement "We are Motorhead... and we play rock n' roll!"
'Overnight sensation' by Motorhead was one of the many 'lost' albums by major bands in the 90's decade... great records that were completely ignored by the majority. It came out in 1996 after a particularly difficult few years for Motorhead... but (the late) Lemmy Kilmister (vocals & bass) recalled being happy w/ the record musically. It was also a record where Lemmy appeared without his trademark 'mutton chops' mustache + sideburns 🤣 Well, he grew it back by 2001... Going back, Motorhead broke big in the UK w/ 'Ace of spades' in 1980 and saw their live album 'No sleep til Hammersmith' chart at #1 in the UK in 1981... but by 1990, financial woes brought Lemmy to America and settled in L.A. and he wrote lyrics for the 1991 Ozzy Osbourne album 'No more tears'... Ozzy also helped Motorhead sign w/ his label Epic Records and their '1916' album in 1991 actually got nominated for a Grammy Award... But record sales were still lagging... Making matters worse, Lemmy ended up firing classic Motorhead drummer Phil 'Philthy Animal' Taylor that year... He asked former Ozzy drummer Tommy Aldridge to play drums on the next Motorhead album, and then hired Mikkey Dee (drums) to do a Motorhead tour. Dee ended up joining the band in 1992 and contributed to the album 'March or die' w/ Lemmy, and Mick 'Wurzel' Burston & Phillip 'Zoom' Campbell (guitars). Unfortunately, Motorhead's misfortunes took over... the band appeared on American TV playing the song 'Hellraiser' ... and sales for 'March or die' actually fell after the performance. Epic Records soon dropped Motorhead... But German fans were loyal to Motorhead, and a German label SPV Records funded the 1993 album 'Bastards'... which Motorhead dedicated to the music industry 🤣It didn't even get a US release at the time. Motorhead started recording a new album 'Sacrifice' in 1995, but longtime guitarist Wurzel was frustrated and quit the band. Releasing 'Sacrifice' in 1995 w/ US and worldwide distribution on minor labels, Motorhead opted to become a trio again w/ Lemmy, Phil Campbell and Mikkey Dee (this line-up would carry on until Lemmy's death in 2015)... They felt 'Sacrifice' was their heaviest record & they sounded best as a 3-piece band as they toured into 1996. Which brought them to 'Overnight sensation' in 1996... Despite playing clubs on tour, Motorhead were still road warriors and persisted w/ another record and tour... Despite being hailed by Metallica and the Foo Fighters as major influences, Motorhead did not see a major boost in sales... They got some fanfare in 1998, releasing the album 'Snake bite love' and playing Ozzy's Ozzfest '98 festival tour in the US. When the big break came for Motorhead in 2004/ '05, they were shocked... They had delivered yet another quality Motorhead album 'Inferno' in '04, and they saw sales spike for that record... driven by internet fanfare somehow... Lemmy said that 'Inferno' sold more copies than all the last few Motorhead records combined. By 2010, Motorhead's records were charting all over the world and their tours were sold out everywhere.
"Bastards" blew my mind. I was a big fan of Motörhead, but they weren't that heavy to me since I was mostly listening to thrash. I wasn't ready for songs like Burner, Death or glory and Liar. I think after 2000 the internet gave so much exposure to metal bands, which was awesome for bands and fans.

'Iron Fist'... and of course, 'Ace of Spades'... Then, the tracks from 'No remorse' in 1985: 'Snaggletooth' ... 'Locomotive'... those were as incendiary and heavy as anything they put out later. Of course, Mikkey Dee (drums) joining Motorhead in 1992 gave them an aggression that produced some of their best stuff in the 90's and beyond.
If you're open to reacting to another full Motorhead album I'd definitely recommend 'Another Perfect Day' from 1983, it often gets overlooked cause it was so different compared to what they were doing at the time. Or maybe 'Bomber', another album that deserves more love and doesn't get it bc it was sandwiched between Overkill and Ace of Spades.
For years I've put off listening to Motorhead for anything more than a song or two. Its been too hard since the big man went, yknow? They got me through so much, their music saved and shaped my life, and seeing them live was the yearly pilgrimage. Through this video, and your infectious joy towards the music, youve made me ready to dig out the old albums, get the bass and distortion pedal out and annoy the neighbours for a bit. Thank you. 👍
Lemmy had a quite nice voice right up until he died. Some of the very last stuff he did was a cover over David Bowie Heroes and a gentle country rock duet with Linda Kay called The Mask.
If you like groovy, bouncy rock, I can recommend "The Strength / The Sounds / The Songs" by Volbeat. They have a pretty unique sound, with a mix of inspirations including Elvis, Johnny Cash and Metallica.
I went to the same secondary school as Lemmy on the Isle of Angelsey, Wales. Later he and his mum moved to a town called Conwy (still in North Wales). He worked at the local "hotpoint" factory which built Washing Machines in early seventies. I now live very near where the Hotpoint factory was (debmolished perhaps 20 years ago). In the late eighties I lived in London and met Lemmy at Dingwalls, a club near Camden Market. Like many stories about Lemmy, he was playing a slot machine most of the evening, but a couple of blondes would bring him tumblers of Jack Daniels occassionally. He made me wait an hour for an autograph, but he gave me one. Seemed decent.
You have to review Suicidal Tendencies the albuns "Lights Camera Revolution" and or "How will I laugh tomorrow" Don't judge the bands name haha just go for the music 👌
Orgazmatron was a all time fav of mine. If you like fugazi. Which is a straight edge band. Check out the band they had called Minor Threat. Keep rocking!!. Motörhead is rock n roll!!.
Since "March Or Die album (1992)" Motorhead has had a heavier sound and not as fast and punk as the early ones! Personally, I like this side of the band much more!

Would love to see you do a reaction to a Metal band called 200 Stab Wounds. Amazing! An album called Slave To the Scalpel. Seen them twice in 2 different states. A band that i highly suggest.They could quite possibly be the next big band in their sub genre.
Lemmy actually finds it easier to sing with his mic high cuz it sort of makes distortion. The Charismatic voice has a video on Motorhead where she explains it better. Also, I heard vase.
Most folks...I said most folks take different meanings from songs, of course. For me this song is paying homage to Mr. Kilmisters bass head which was affectionately referred to as "Murder One"......thus....welcome to the Murder Show.
It's an odd album to react, don't get me wrong, there's no such thing as bad Motorhead album.. but I wouldn't put this one among the greatest. From the 90s I recommend Bastards and 1916.
Don't Believe a Word stands out for me on the album too. Its viciousness is seething. Lemmy's voice is calm cuz he has no more Fs to give. since it's so long I think there's room to have a blistering guitar or drum break in there to put an exclamation point on the riff, but really no complaints. Love it.
Motorhead have a very consistently good discography. But you definitely have to go back and listen to the holy trinity. Overkill, Bomber and Ace of Spades.

My favorite motorhead album is one most people gloss over completely... snake bite love, but you really can't go wrong with most of their discography.

Don't you hate a chorus that lets you down. And yet, Don't Believe a Word is one of Lemmy's strongest songs.

The Lem sounded the same all the way to the end. He was a total war horse and rocked two times longer and two times harder than everyone else.
