  • @SailorSkierBoy
    @SailorSkierBoy 5 лет назад +11

    Had a 2008 Cayenne GTS and my wife bought an after market warranty, which I thought was pretty expensive. Then we had some problems and the warranty was actually a good deal. If Porsche would have made things replaceable like a PCV valve, which was built into the valve cover, so the valve cover ($1800) had to be replaced to get the PCV fixed. Couldn't find anybody on any of the forums that actually does their own work on the GTS so had to use the warranty. In the long run the warranty paid for itself. But when we went to purchase another warranty nobody would sell us one?? The turbos depreciate more the the GTS, so if I was going to buy another Cayenne it would be the GTS. The car was a frinking hoot to drive, I loved it, but w/o the aftermarket warranty it's too expensive to repair

    Great video and great comments below! I think we need to consider that the Turbo is the top-performer of the Cayenne range. Which means they squeezed out every last ounce of performance from each component. While that makes for a great ride, it means the components are more under stress when compared to the base and S models. Given that, I don't think the cost is too bad. I think if you got a base Cayenne, it would be much cheaper to own.

      Indy mechanics (and dealers) charge a shitload of $$$ for a simple oil change. You can see what the actual parts cost, the rest is profit. I laugh in their faces and do all my own oil changes now. My PT Cruiser oil change used to cost $22 at Walmart. Then Walmart autocenter closed down. The indy mechanic wanted to charge $200 + tax to change the oil on my BMW Z4. Fuck that. I made some ramps and do ALL my oil changes for a fraction of what a garage tries to charge.

Bought the car one owner at 105k, what exactly are the sorts of issues with V8s I’m curious as to what to expect. Coolant pipe upgrade which was a design flaw by Porsche, bad wheel bearing, rear spring failure, exhaust cat leak living in North East near the bay, driveshaft, is nothing related to the engine. I’ll grant you more headaches than one wants to deal with but nothing major. Ignition coils left my wife and I stranded but that was my negligence and not checking on them after I bought the car. It has not let me down once or walking on the highway so again, I wonder what catastrophic failure lies ahead for my ol boy blu.

    Very surprised as to how many repairs you have had
    I also needed new coils and the propshaft bearing
    But not the arms or the vaccum pump
    The brakes are goinge to be done in the near future, they cost around 500 euros for the full set, if I fit them myself (dealer is like a 2.000 euro job for all the corners)
    Maintenance is slightly higher as I replaced both fluid reserves for the PDCC and power steering, as recommended by Porsche (but insignificant, maybe it was around 200 euros and you only do it every many years)
    On gas I average 15 US mpg, but cost is much higher here in Europe
    The final conclusion is having a car is very expensive, in general, but going the extra mile you can at least be in nice things as the turbo

    The best cars to buy used are 2010-2014. Between the early 2000s-2008 car company’s weren’t trying. They were cheap and people had money. After the 08 recession car companies had to try to make people buy again, and most people are broke during this time frame. It is one of the the reason leasing options are very affordable after 2010, now everyone is driving. It might be snake oil but as a mechanic I’ve seen the same generation of cars last longer 09+ versus 08 and before in the the same generation. Idk about this brand of car, but I just wanna put it out there for people who wanna buy used

    Right, but cost of ownership is total maintenance and expenses/total amount of time owning the vehicle. Buying a used vehicle, and fixing it up doesn’t represent that as a conclusive cost/value of owning the vehicle past the initial restoration period. And presumably any vehicle will need a degree of restoring past 100k miles. If every year it cost $7500 in maintenance over a 5-7 year stretch, that may represent the amount of time people own cars for, though your point is valid that this is an expensive vehicle and therefore expensive to maintain.

He was a bit puzzled and asked what I was talking about? I told him if I was going to pay that much I need to see the girl that's going to give me the blowjob while he does this work.
      I found another mechanic to do it for $125 bucks.

    How does it compare to your 997.2? $11K is a big number, but that accounts for gas, insurance, registration. That’s going to be there regardless. Cost of maintenance, to me, is the stickler. Especially since I only buy preowned (except once).

    • @CarFanatic
      @CarFanatic  5 лет назад

      Let's see $350 for registration, $500 on DIY maintenance, $1000 insurance, gas for the equivalent of 10k miles would be around $1500. That would be around $3500 not counting depreciation.

      Ha well depending on depreciation, it will likely be just as expensive unless you get into a car that has little depreciation left. 986, 996, 987s with higher mileage

      Car Fanatic some would argue that the 997.1s are near or at the bottom of their depreciation curve. It seems to be the case for the 996 Turbos, at least.

    Good video. Succinct and no fluff so many thanks. I've just bought a Cayenne Turbo 2011 and live in Texas where the roads are rough. Would you recommend any preventative maintenance for example the bushes (I'm at 110k miles). Any other preventative maintenance in hindsight to avoid some of the bigger costs? And was your preventative maintenance in line with the manufacturers recommendations or were you being cautious because of the significant costs of repairs? Lastly, I've heard some horror stories about aftermarket maintenance contracts. Who do you recommend?

  • @hemmarket

    Well done !! You thankfully can do alot of your own maintenance, but if you took it to the dealership for all of those jobs, it would have costs a great deal more and alot of time sitting in the shop. That is a ton of maintenance no matter how you slice it. My used 2016 Macan S had $18,000 in repair bills in 2 yrs (I twice had to replace the transfer case in one year at $6,000 per). The resale value was cut in half the first year, and on a used car that is ridiculous ! And yes my warranty covered some of the repairs, but that doesn't explain very poor workmanship and bad parts that allowed these problems in the first place. Great car, nightmare to own and pay for. 16 bolts have to be removed to change the oil ! Does that tell you all you need to know? I had a Lexus LS 430 for ten years, and during that time I replaced the tires twice, the oil and a battery. Porsche is big fun, and a garbage can build. All of their ratings for reliability and resale are ridiculously false.

    Would love to see an Opportunity Cost figure included in your bottom line. I notice the Edmonds figure you quoted for the X5M had a finance cost included. That essentially takes care of calculating opportunity cost instead of using the cash price figure - for those who pay cash - but any cash deposit Opportunity Cost should still be included.

    • @DiscoFang
      @DiscoFang 4 года назад

      Yes, I see you didn't include any finance cost for your Cayenne in your spreadsheet calc. If you paid cash, the opportunity cost of that needs to be included for a fair comparison and an absolute figure. I mean the person who chooses a Fiesta at $15,000 instead of a 2018 Cayenne at $96,000 potentially has an extra $81,000 to place in their mutual fund. Earning a typical 7.5% pa would be a compounded gain of $12,600 in 2 years. Subtract that from the Fiesta annual running cost of $5956.80 and you have an average annual nett GAIN of.... +$343 per year!

    You could buy a low mileage Renault Clio GT-line tce 2012' for under 15k miles. I've owned the car for two years and I have only had to pay towards two passed M.O.T's, new oil changes and air filters. And that is it. A total cost of £210.00 to run this car.
    You only buy a car from new if you plan to keep it for 7 years or more. You never buy a high-end used car with high mileage. It's money down the drain.
    I have my own business and invest my monies into Real Estate. All cars are money pits, if you want an expensive car, get business cover, insurance and a business lease contract for 12 months, with maintenance warranty covered.
    You only pay for the difference in depreciation from the new price of the vehicle minus the actual value worth after 12 months. Most business owners I know and some millionaires also never own the car, only lease it out for 1 or 2 years max. Then you get the next latest model the year after.

      @@CarFanatic Thank you very much for the speedy response CF, it was appreciated! I talked to my Independent Porsche shop owner (I'm currently Cayman S owner) about purchasing the extended warranty because I was really worried about the rear cooling tubes below the intake manifold rupturing without any warning and trashing the engine. He assured me the newer hoses will not instantly rupture, the warnings signs will be antifreeze fluid leaks first. He told me from his experience they don't like to pay with the excuses of pre-existing condition, manufacture MX services not performed, and driver carelessness. On your CarChex extended warranty, did they know of your Car Fanatic RUclips channel?
