- We often recommend used cars as a great way to get into something you really like but seems out of reach. So when Todd's wife came to him wanting a more fun truck, it was time to go shopping. The result is this 2010 Cayenne, and the beginning of a new series of long-term ownership discussions. Both the guys will be discussing these cars with new updates about every quarter.
Here's the introduction to the Cayenne, and why Todd and his wife found it the right choice for them. Being a Porsche guy - Paul agreed.

Just bought a pre-owned Cayenne and you were EXACTLY right about everything!!! This vehicle is very surprising!!!!
How reliable is it?
Can you tell how reliable it is?
@@damolaogundipe4840 very reliable
I bought a 2008 Cayenne S back when it was new and still use it as a daily driver. I really wish manufacturers would open a channel of communication with long term users to identify all the issues they might have with their cars to further improve future products. As, for the Cayenne, there really is no better SUV regarding driving dynamics and I have tried and owned many of them. As an all-rounder it's one of the best.
I’m in the process of buying a 08 s. Is the maintenance expensive?
@@drettiandretti5329 Fred, did you end up buying the 08 s? If yes, what are your impressions? Glad you bought it?
@@drettiandretti5329 - Find a good German Independent shop. This is key.... or, simply DIY.
Wow this is crazy, just bought a 2004 Cayenne S literally two days ago and I completely understand where Todd and Paul are coming from. Within these two days I have completely fallen in love with it. Yes it's an "SUV" and it's big and not great on the gas but the way it drives is just damn right impressive, the noise and growl that it makes scares any babies that you would take in it (thanks 4.5 liter V8) and it's almost illegal to the laws of physics how well a car so heavy and big can hold it's own on some fast corners; oh and beating some kid who thinks his coupe is the shit in your 2 and a half ton SUV is a pretty sweet feeling. Good luck to you and your family Todd:)
TheCarVlogger I have the same year cayenne S. A young kid driving a subaru wrx through the canyons was shocked that I was keeping up with him so easily in a big, fat suv... Well, it is a Porsche and you are 100% right about how awesome it drives. Nothing else drives like them in the suv class. Congrats and enjoy!!
Just think about it. They are only making the new Cayennes faster and better handling. Although a bit lighter, its still no where close to how you'd expect Any SUV to handle.
TheCarVlogger 2005 s pepper grinder is my main go to car. Like the old Chevy k5 4x4. It’s a monster with Porsche dna. The seats n interior is great
The all wheel drive with the locking capabilities of a 4x4 is great, wish I had the car a bit higher at times when climbing steep muddy incline’s
Just got same year love the car ..
@@TheAly78 Aly, I'm shopping for new models but am interested in why you purchased that years model. Not judging but was it the price or something specific? I've never owned a Porsche so am also looking at the annual costs per age.
Just bought a 2009 Cayenne S, in part, due to this series. Thank you guys. Can't believe how solid and capable the vehicle feels. Drives like a tank still and is ten years old!
Same here..the torque is phenomenal
Matthew kirby hi him looking @ 2010 model with 117k miles ... anything too watch out for ? And how do you find the maintenance?
how’s the suspension ? is it air suspension? is it reliable?
@@ilikedonuts9 mine is not air. Been reliable
I love my 09 Cayenne GTS. Runs great, and it’s reasonable to maintain.
Everybody remember to drain your Cayenne, Q7 and Touareg bulkhead. See my Porsche Tech playlist for a How to video.
a 4 year bumper to bumper warranty (Aftermarket) will probably set to back like 4 grand
but that's totally worth it, i've basically heard nothing but good things about the cayenne and its nice to see some affirmation
if im ever in a position where a wagon is a no-go and it must be a crossover, cayenne it is
Ryukachoo glad to hear, I'm looking at purchasing one
This is a great idead for a show! Most reviews only focus on what the car feels like, but never really dwell too much on what comes after. Excited
I recently got a 2008 cayenne gts, car is perfect. No complaints at all other than SHE SLUUUURPS THE 20 GAL TANK EVER OTHER DAY… and in California that’s over $100.00
It's crazy to see how good of value these used past generation Porsches are. I am 20 years old and I'm looking at sub-$20k 996 Carreras and Boxsters and can tell myself that they are well within reach with some saving up.
I have a buddy with 627,000 on his 2004 Cayenne Turbo. Thing is built like a Panzer tank!
I have a 2004 S I bought 5 years ago for 10 grand with 82,000 miles and love it. Haven't had too many issues. It's fast and comfortable with the air suspension. Fun to drive and powerful enough to haul my 7,500 boat. it basically does it all.
I've owned 2 955 cayenne S over the years.i love these SUVs. They handle great handling suvs, and they are good offroading vehicles aswel.also I wouldn't drive anything but a cayenne in the winter,my cayennes have never let me down in any harsh weather condition thrown at it in Ontario, Canada
talk about how reliability the car is
I have owned a 2005 Porsche Cayenne for several years now and have been very satisfied with its reliability and performance- other than scheduled maintenance like oil, air filter, spark plugs and brake pads, it has done really really well. As for gas mileage, add an octane booster at every other full tank (premium fuel) and you will see how much of a difference it will make both in performance and fuel economy (which is not bad at all being a daily driver) Would I recommend it over the GMC? Most certainly! For anyone considering buying a Cayanne- you won't be disappointed 😉
Of course, now I have to look into getting one...
Great job on getting a cayenne Todd. I've owned a 2008 GTS since day one and I absolutely love it!! I'm still driving it to this day with around 90,000 miles on the dash (city and highway and road trips). So far it's only had a few hiccups, electrical mostly, but the mechanics are A+ and maintenance hasn't been bad to be honest (I take very good care of my cars however). Also, it is an animal in the winter you'll never get stuck!! Great choice hope you enjoy it the way I do !
I bought my 2010 Evo as my first "fun" car in part because of your guys review on them. Still loving it.
evoltzt - Thrilled to hear our reviews were helpful to you! Glad you're so enjoying your Evo. It remains one of Todd's favorites.
The Cayenne is great. It was a real game changer when it came out. SUVs back then were boing and cheap as hell in terms of interior design/quality. I had an early 2000s mercedes ML and when i got my first Cayenne in 2004 (i believe ) i was blown away, it was basically as luxurious and refined as my S Class with the advantage that it can be used with no problems in the winter.
The only bad thing is that the cayenne is not that reliable, but as long as you buy it brand new with warranty it's ok.
I don't recommend buying a used one without warranty. Servicing costs are allready higher than even premium brands like Mercedes or BMW and you can easily spend 15+k/year in repairs (the suspension is super expensive, as is the gearbox, the injection system, turbos etc ffs even a headlight is a over 1.5k iirc).
The Cayenne was my first Porsche. Back in 2010 I bought a 2008 CPO Cayenne S because I was living in a very snowy region in the USA. I kept it until a month before the warranty ran out and put many miles on it. I am glad I did have a warranty. There were not many major problems that I took it in for but the small problems I did have would have cost quite allot if I had to pay for them out of pocket. I live in Munich Germany and have since switched to a new 911 Carrera since it's a better car for our roads and gas prices here.
PLEASE talk about the maintenance cost between Porsche & GMC
Kevin K No kidding. If this sucker doesn't have a warranty, then good luck up with the upkeep and service charges.
Kev erino Yeah xD
Kev erino Hoping they know someone to take care of it. Porsche can't be as bad as BMW outside of warranty.
Kevin K Porches except the Cayanne are thought of as reliable because they're typically not driven every day.
blurglide My relative daily drives his 911. He's never had a major issue with it, going on 20 years of ownership. Minor issues being that a few times he spun it off a road(type of guy that if he lived through going 30 mph over the speed limit on a corner, assumes 10mph more will also be fine - you don't want to ever ride with him behind the wheel) and has had to replace the clutch once. Yes, like any performance car you really want to stick to routine maintenance and parts CAN be in a higher price bracket - but the car already starts in a higher price bracket than XYZ reliable auto appliance.
You don't need a bumper to bumper warranty to safely own a Porsche. You do need to stay away from them if you don't budget correctly and don't take great care of your cars. They have great reliability. Even when looking at a Porsche, I'd recommend buying one that's well under the limit of what you can afford. Don't buy a car that costs enough to affect your income or savings.
I want to see the updates. I considered one of these for a while, but with the V8. The big question is reliability and maintenance costs. In a few years the Macan will start to look like a great value as a used car, they are selling a ton of them right now.
I love my Cayenne Turbo! While it has needed more repairs than I would have liked, it is one helluva machine that always puts a smile on my face.
what repairs did you do
Just get the 2009 V6 Touareg the maintenance is pretty much at $0.00 with the exception of scheduled maintenance. I have 174,000 miles and I am just amazed at the reliability.
have a 06 cayenne turbo. really reliable. 3 years I've spent $500 on maintenance. of I course I did the labor. save a tone of money. these cars have many diy guides.
Hello from Australia. I have just purchased the identical car here with 44k klm for $34k Australian. Immaculate condition and looking forward to using it as my daily. Love the videos, thanks.
Love the S and V6 front!
Prettier than the obnoxious grille on GTS and Turbo.
Wow, I have never liked the Cayenne until I saw this. Now I feel I need to buy one. Life goal added.
I really love your guys reviews! When I watched the review on the 06 Cayman I bought one a year later. Your review was spot on. I was thinking about buying a Q7 but I after this review I'll probably end up buying the Cayenne as well.
We're glad to be helpful to you. This Cayenne has been a great car for Todd, and you might enjoy the further updates. Thanks for being with us and liking what we do!
By the way, I love the Cayman you got in May, nice! That's the same time I bought my 06 Cayman S.
I did buy a vehicle I didn't know I wanted until I got it. And now I love it. It is my 06' Cadillac SRX-4. V8. I love it. Got it with 117k on the odometer, and it has been great. Save for the strut tower mount going bad. But it is 9 yrs old. Maintenance I guess. Gas mileage is terrible. But I don't care. It is a big, comfortable cruiser that my family uses for road trips and has plenty of room. I got the blue color and that seems to be rarer in my area. I have only seen 1 other in over a year. My next purchase car wise will either be an early C6 Vette or An XLR-V. Haven't decided yet.
We used to have an '09 Cayenne Turbo, I LOVED that thing.
Congrats Todd and hope it doesn't give you any trouble.
Great Positive Video. I love my Cayenne too, have owned it for 3 years. 3.2 V6
GREAT BUY and LOOKING FORWARD to the SERIES GUYS. Here's the thing I HOPE you do for us. Show us what we can buy almost new for say $20-$30K that would of cost upwards of $95K NEW. On a 5 year old Porsche the miles could be very high or very low. or in between that we don't know. Also knowing which ones are more reliable and less reliable and or what is known to go wrong if anything is known. CONGRATS to you and your wife!
the facelift gen 1 "957" is really the sweet spot. yeah it still has the lingering Gen 1 issues like cardan shaft bearing support but it also still has the low range and feels like a beefy utility vehicle
Goes to show how much the badge can pull people into vehicles despite how ugly the vehicle is. :-)
I like how you guys are updating your site more frequently.
Great review. Can't wait to hear about the first maintenance bill. ;-)
Chris Juarez - Todd would agree with you - this is not an attractive vehicle. But he feels the same about the Panamera... likes the dynamics, but dislikes the looks. However, the Acadia, and most of these kinds of vehicles aren't bought for their beauty anyway. Luckily, you can't see it from the inside, and after driving many things in this class and price-point, the dynamics mattered far more than the badge.
Thanks for watching. We are holding our breathe on the maintenance, but will keep all of you informed!
EverydayDriver I don't mind this generation's looks i do prefer the new cayenne's though.
EverydayDriver Well, Porsche does have their reputation to maintain. So I'm not surprised it can hide it's weight so well, as well give you a certain amount of feel compared to all the other "appliances" out there.
I think the Toureg (which face it, is what the Cayenne is) has been riddled with maintenance headaches. But maybe you might not run into so many of these things since there are less "toys" in this model you picked up.
Lets hope those maintenance bills are few and not so expensive. :-)
Drewbie85 I think in this segment, for this size, the new X5 is looking alright. Then again, everyone is waiting for the new Tesla Model X to hit the street.
Chris Juarez I certainly don't want the Model X...It's hideously bulbous. The Model S is fantastic, the Model X, not so much.
The Cayenne would be the moonshiners choice. I bought my Cayenne Turbo used and love it. Though it can be very fast it is also a joy driving very easy and mellow. Maintenance has not been bad although brakes will be a bit spendier.
The car looks fantastic. I am also looking to switch to a 2008-2010 Cayenne. Black & tan looks beautiful.
I hope you guys are preparing a 2nd long term review soon!
Nice, I like the idea of a long-term update series... that's something that is really lacking on most youtube car channels I think. Hopefully the car holds up. My dad had a used S600 that was purchased at probably ~1/10th of msrp, really fun to drive, but keeping that V12 going ended up costing quite a lot over time. Going with the more basic models is a better choice for sure
Bought 2014 for the wifey and she loves it very much
I have money to buy a used one...worried maintenance will break my back!
These cayennes are extremely reliable, and low maintenance.
fhk1980 did you buy one?
@@therealbajan522 have you ever owned one? Are they that good and reliable?
I've been eye balling the Cayenne 4s on car max for a bit. I want one.no matter how ugly.
I love how he sneak dissed his wife on how she sits in the porsche lol.
Very interesting video, stuff about a car I would never normally think about, but something I would consider buying, this direction you're taking with the videos is fantastic, its an underserviced market in car reviews on RUclips as there are millions of new car guys, but this tangent, is superb!
The only ever issue with Porsche is VW (Bosch) electric, your ticket to the funhouse. For some reason Germany keeps shitty Bosch electronics around forever.
Great idea for a new segment. I'll be watching with interest. Because, let's face it, not all of us can afford to go buy that latest and greatest vehicles out there.
Letting others take the depreciation hit and seeing how a vehicle holds up over time in terms of reliability and satisfaction for its owners are great criteria when looking at the used market. Keep it up!
I have one I bought with 60,000 Miles it now has 150,000 Miles only thing I have changed are brakes and ac blower motor great car it’s basicLly a vw
Its crazy how much used car you can buy for not much money, i bought a 2011 mustang gt earlier in the year for $23k, with low miles and a few mods. Thats the same price as a brand new dodge dart, and i have a 400 hp v8 to play with.....no brainer if you ask me
it starts at $32k though, it's lost about less than a third of its value if my guessing math is correct
After watching this video, I am now considering a used Porsche Cayenne for me and my wife also. Like others mentioned, only thing I am worried about is the reliability and maintenance costs. Did you do any intensive research on upkeep costs before purchasing the vehicle? I have been searching without much results. Looking forward to seeing your next videos on long term reliability. Love the greater frequency of the uploads! Enjoyed the 50 year of 911 and the mid-engine road trip videos.
*0:11** - "The Acadia is a Perfectly Good Car"*
*Scotty Kilmer (Smily Seal Face): HAH!*
its a great segment, most of us would love to have a high performance car and being young its hard to pay the full price for it but buying a used high end car one has to worry about the maintenance issue..hopefully you cover in the following videos so we can get a great perspective at the overall ownership experience and not just initial blow
I've always wondered about these. One part of me always looked at them as just another over priced SUV, but the other part of me screamed PORSCHE! Meaning it had to be good. Looking forward to the vehicle as well.
I love the increased frequency of the videos! Very interesting to see what you guys own yourselves too.
Just bought a 2009 V6 just like your 2010 with 85,000 miles. It is pristine. We got it through a broker dealer friend who traded it with a "high end" client.
This too was for my wife who loved her Subaru but wanted a sporty SUV. We paid below what a comparable Toyota Highlander Limited cost!
New tires and freshly serviced by the local Porsche dealer.
We were very fortunate to have the connections to make this happen otherwise I to would have had second and third thoughts.
I've only owned 944s and new they were built like tanks and beyond reliable IF you were diligent on maintenance.
So, what did your research turn up? I'm considering a 2009 Cayenne S. Appreciate your thoughts.
Take any Cayenne to a reputable Porsche shop. They should be able to pull up the service history as well.
For replacement parts, I've had phenomenal experience with Rock Auto on name brand parts. Mahle filters for example.
Education on your Porsche is key. We're talking maintenance, repair facilities, known issues.

Read the review on Edmund's. Very positive as well as the customer reviews.
@@stephenm3874 Thanks Stephen. Just curious...why did you decide to go with a 2009 model? For me, I have an older 911 and want a sportier family vehicle, but don't want to pay the huge cost for a new one. Plus, I actually like the 09 styling, exterior, at least. Did you get the V8? What is the engine sound like? Appreciate all your feedback. Trevor
@@stephenm3874 Yes, thanks Stephen. I did notice lots of positive reviews from the 2009 model year.
Its always nice to let someone else take that first depreciation hit by buying a used car. European cars can be bought for fractions of their cost new 3-5 years old. My wife and I just recently got rid of our ML500. We bought it 4 years old for 25k with only 30k miles on it. We paid 1/4 of what the car was new.
but whats the maintenance cost for the Cayenne...brakes, normal repairs etc?
Volkswagen Touareg parts mostly
@@tommyh2884 not the turbos...
@@glencorder9150 ...Or the V8, which is also a Porsche engine and transmission
I totally agree with u , cayenne is a good car , but you should’ve had the stronger version , like the Cayenne s or the turbo it will be so much fun to drive and having a big engine who can carry the weight of the car easily is better i guess , anyways good review, thanks man
i'm looking at a used one right now I might trade my jeep and my other car for a 2012 i'm looking at i'm use to high maintenance cars I've had a few this would be it for me
personally, i prefer track cars. to me thats where the care has to go into. buying a grand prix car (preferably historic) and signing up for a racing series and competing. thats what tickles my fancy, on the road i think its more important to have a car thats luxurious and practical, as well as fun to drive. So i tend to stick more to the gt side of cars, however i think the cayenne is a nice balance. its fun to drive and its all weather practical which i like because all that means is i can use it throughout the year and trailer my racing car to races and track days.
2009 black on cashmere leather , I just purchased
Thoroughly interested in more long term updates! Keep 'em coming!
Gad to see people mentioning the tour egg, left happy and not disappointed! So you can get a Cayenne even cheaper :p
No really though, how many miles on it? Any problems with it so far?
Good luck, I hope your wife loves the car
I'm I happy you guys upload more frequently!
Loved the video and can totally relate to your comments.. with the current situation i decided not to go fro another contract hire car and opt to buy a Vintage 2003 Cayenne.. Yes its 17 years old but it looks amazing and drives so so well. I have put a private number on it which further enhances the look and feel..
Best of luck with this purchase. Although it's not much of an improvement in the looks department, I'd much rather a used Panamera, but I understand why you chose the Cayenne. I couldn't live with the Cayenne's looks on a daily bases (at least one as dated looking as this; it didn't age well).
Goldenhand the Just - Todd would have preferred a Panamera as well (Though neither of them are cars he considers attractive). But, used Panameras are still a lot more expensive than used Cayennes, so his budget and his wife's interest in a truck ride height won out here. Thanks for watching!
EverydayDriver Todd, Congrats, you made a great purchase!! (although I prefer the V8 haha) Still, the V6 is nice too! I own a Cayenne S just a bit older then yours and I love it!! It has been very reliable and strong. As far as the "dated look" comments... I don't think so, but I would recommend a nice set of 20 inch after market turbo II wheels with black painted inserts and polished aluminum spokes look awesome on this car. Looks way more aggressive and "updated". World of difference. Instead of the 275/40/20 tires that usually come on those wheels go for the 275/45/20 for a little more comfortable ride and nicer look that fills in that wheel well gap better. Enjoy and looking forward to more vids!! Still watching my 911 50th anniversary dvd you guys made... keep em coming!
Good idea doing the long term videos! I'm really interested to see how your personal vehicles age and any issues y'all run into. EverydayDriver
Trillions like and best comment for you because you are best on Earth and follower respect you,we need videos in Real 120fps or 240fps 4K,8K and Sound in FullHD 3D,
So, I have a 2009 Cayenne S and the car comes with the Sport button. Also have a PSM off button on the dash. Recently, I tried driving with the PSM off and WOW, what a difference! Much more engaging than just pressing the Sport button. Anyone else experiencing this? When you disengage the PSM, totally changes the throttle map. Not sure why this is the case but wanted to point it out for people that may not be aware.
Great post...u guys have a great style of presenting the show and car details...
Seat memory with base model? In Korea, seat memory is from gts trim. Dann
love these short videos! keep up the good work
very capable SUV. only 2 things are the styling in this gen, and the maintenance
Great video guys...would like to see more on the car and its purchase...you alluded to cost..how much did you pay?..Mileage on the vehicle? Keep up the great work.
i Kind of like this face lift first gen version design over the 2nd gen.
Porsche is always best in its class
Awesome, can't wait for more from this new segment.
Used german cars = Mechanic visits monthly
If you buy the wrong one that hasn't been maintained.
Cayenne is very reliable.
Thanks for this episode. I have never owned a German car. What's the reliability and repair costs (brakes, etc.) and performance compared to a brand new Toyota Highlander?
does the direct injection on the refreshed 1st Gen Cayenne S have any issues?
I brought it's brother the a 2004 vw touareg v8 an like it a lot great car lots. Of power
.
I own 2 cayennes, one diesel and difficult to say which one is better
Love you style guys always a treat to watch.
Make sure you get at least a 5 year warranty because if something goes wrong you know is going to cost you another quarter of what you paid for this car... Good luck man!
Brian Vtec Extended warranties are a scam. You will more often than not pay more for the warranty than you will on maintenance. That's how insurance works. It's not like a new car warranty where 1. fixes are unlikely and 2. the cost is bundled with the purchase price.
Why not buy the Toureg? Same car different badge.
i was also wondering this, but the toureg is also pretty expensive too no? like the used prices might not be that much different? i dk haven't looked it up
xstepper Yup!
xstepper Lol, it is not the same car.
xstepper Toureg has very different suspension and thus ride and enjoyment
Onoff314 Still a honking SUV. Get the Panamera like I did.
Other than suspension the only thing different is the badge.
If she likes a big and high seating position why wouldn't she get a Land Rover? It's the biggest SUV, Best off-road vehicle, Most powerful SUV 550 hp, Can tow 8000 pounds, Most Luxurious SUV ect the list goes on nothing is better than a Land Rover
Great idea for the channel & great choice Todd!
Expensive to maintain especially if used a lot
Have fun with that maintenance
You should consider bigger wheels. (not huge). It would really step up it's looks.
Bruno Oliveira Yeah, I'm not a fan of huge wheels myself, but 19s would look better without messing up the ride too bad. (These are 18s).
Yeah the wheels on this one are around 2 inches too small
so only the V6 comes without air suspension?? how about the S , naturally aspirated v8
I want a cayenne they are beautiful
best idea video topic yet!!
The reason it depreciates like a 7-series is because it's unreliable and expensive to fix, like a 7-series
Lol, I didn't trust his opinion as soon as he said "the GMC Acadia is a perfect car." UNironically
Awesome video keep it up very personable
Ebay has new air shocks for v8, less than $1000ea.
I've been considering getting this exact same model and year. What was the mileage on the car in the video?
Paul, Todd? Did you guys go see the new Mad Max? What did you think?
I have 1 just like it.
Great
Great review !
