    ---------------------------------------------------
    ➡️ Talk about a life-changing album! BTBAM released their masterpiece "Colors" in 2007, and it was my gateway into heavier music. Despite spinning this ‪@BTBAMofficial‬ album nauseam for months after its release, "Ants of the Sky" was a track I kept coming back to to study the absolute bass guitar masterclass given by Dan Briggs. Being a bass player in a metal band means your work is already cut out for you in terms of standing out - however, Dan's parts gave me hope. They further influenced my style and were practically a study guide on how to play thoughtful, impactful, and independent parts in extremely dense compositions. In this video, I take a deep dive into the music theory behind this track, the recurring motifs, the compositional foreshadowing, Dan's glassy-clean tones, his use of counterpoint melodies, and much more.

    I was in a band with Dan for a several years in high school. We were both fans of BTBAM before he had the opportunity to join, and we listened to them pretty consistently (we had an independent study class which we used just to listen to and talk about music) leading up to him becoming part of the band. At the time, he was primarily a (phenomenal) guitarist, but our high school jazz band had an excess of guitarists and a major lack of bassists. So, he bit the bullet and picked up the bass. That was a little more than 20 years ago.

    This is my favorite BTBAM song. I have the lines "Sleep on, fly on. In your mind, you can fly" tattooed on my leg. So I was super stoked seeing you do this song. This band is life changing (hence why I just saw them for my 11th time last week). Dan is such an amazing bassist, and I love how much his bass stands out in everything they do. Props to picking this song. I look forward to more BTBAM videos.

      I've talked to dustie, tommy, dan, and Blake. But Paul is a lone wolf. He's been nice every time I got to say hello, and I think it's a shame he is left out of the best guitarists of our generation conversation personally.

    • @victorerickson9770
      @victorerickson9770 4 месяца назад

      @@bullghani he's just not a virtuoso. Paul is fantastic but people like to get caught up in semantics surrounding technicality. I think he's noteworthy and I can pick out a Paul solo from a mile away; his bluegrass influence is very prominent. It's a great blending of genres that very few can pull off without sounding corny, and that's what I love about him.

That first track is really just an "overture", but is the key to how the rest of the music unfolds behind it.

    I have to admit I couldn't get into BtBaM for a long time, but eventually it clicked and started making sense. Now I consider them one of the most unique bands out there. For sure I could never list 5% of theoritical aspects you just throw off the cuff, but aside from all the technical qualities - what I find especially appealing is that surprise factor and dynamics in their compositions. At one moment you're listening to a really nice "clean melodies" section that's building up and then it suddenly goes sideways into absolutely raw and brutal death metallish grind. It almost feels like the artist is telling you "we don't give a flying f**k about proprieties" and I love that.
    Thank you for the vid and your analysis!

    Colors is one of the few albums that always gets a full playthrough and has since day 1. I love the earlier stuff, but Colors brought it all together. Spiritual Migration by Persefone is the other album that always gets a front to back listen.

    Its really too bad that Dan is now out of BTBAM and I hope the replacement they find will be up to the task. BTW, what do you think of the sequel album "Colors II" @lowendUniversity? I think its actually even better believe it or now as this first one had a very similar impact on me as you described when it came out.

    I am not a fan of growly vocals but Opeth is a band i fell in love with because of Steven Wilson's involvement... I'm such a fan of his that i got into them after finding out he produced an album of theirs... they are also masterful players... what do you think of them? I still don't gravitate towards vocals like that but i do love Opeth, at least the stuff before they went into their new 70s prog sound which i lost interest in... their chord progressions are killer, i just love their ability to make artful metal!

    It's just a ''thinking'', but to me this was the most MUSICAL Album.
    I love all BTBAM's Albuns, but COLORS is the more immersive.
    In studio's quality, of course is the COLORS II, but musically is the BEST.
    After COLORS, PARALLAX.
