I don't know now but they were one of the first metal bands to use Patreon a couple of years ago. I remember their, now former, drummer dan presland posting a photo on Facebook of his resignation letter to his regular job because at the moment he could start living off from the band.

Patreon is a big factor. They have a decent consistent following on there, having started it pretty early-on in 2016.
I've given then $5/month for the last 5 years, as have many others.
I don't think they're rolling in it, but they make enough to make it work.

One of the sickest bass tones I’ve ever heard I’ll suggest the song “ smile” since it’s the first one I heard from them, and it would be great for the viewers to dig into but there are songs on it with probably better basslines you HAVE to check them out! I already thought they were the greatest band to grace the earth, and then I experienced it first hand. LITERALLY the greatest band to ever be born and grace the earth. Though Xen wasn't doing the harsh vocals, fucking James Dorton from the Faceless filled in, and their new drummer now, they both fucking killed it. Amazing show and experience, and I can now die happy.

great reaction and analysis. as probably said, this song just has so much depth to analyze (was even taught in an Australian Music University). Dan on drums (who's sadly left the band) what he is doing is incredible and has layers to unpack - 12/8 blast beats, shuffle blast beats. What's also cool to point out is how at 22:49 Tim the clean singer was supposed to start but missed, so after going through the phrase, Dan did a faster double bass part at 23:01 before the high bass notes came in. I imagine the faster bass drum part was one of those centring "ok now we're all together now" cues that bands just have and know when they play as one.

So I love the fuck out of this band and I'm so glad you're looking at their stuff :) They were actually my first live show as a wee Aussie lad -- I had to bring my mum because I was underage hahaha. I'm not sure if you cover it in their video (I just started watching lol) but this song was actually studied by the Sydney conservatorium of music for its composition. There are a ton of great prog metal bands with killer bassists -- it's such a shame that modern mixing and mastering tends to bury bassists.

  • @kostasseth9150

Man I’m so happy about what you mentioned when the guitar is tremolo picking and the bass following in the same pattern but with simple notes. I had this conversation many times with other bass players and the majority of them kept following the tremolo picking.. and I always said basically what you just said about how the notes in the bass need more time to sound with that frequency and how it cuts through the mix. I’m in fact a guitar player. That’s my original instrument. But in one of my bands(we play dissonant death in the styles of Ulcerate, Gorguts, Akercocke) I play bass for 10 years now.. and we have one guitar not two. So basically I have the role of the lead guitar too but with melodies and leads in the bass.. and as guitar player at first I tried tremolo picking parts following the guitar but then I realized that simple notes give more depth to the composition and even creating an atmosphere that a guitar couldn’t. And since then I supported that and I mean that the bass player should try and do something different from the guitar(not all the times but when the part needs it).. I’m so happy that a player and composer at your high level and establishment noticed that and pointed it out. I believe by doing such things you can be a better player and composer.. at least that’s what I saw in me.. And by the way you should check out playthroughs of both Cygnus(who has left the band now) and their new bass player Martino Garattoni. They are both amazing players and to the point composers. You’ll definitely love them both! 😉

They're in a different metal genre, Unlucky Morpheus has a similar composition but a very different outcome. ruclips.net/video/RUiRlUGMTwY/видео.html is a good place to start as it's somewhat similar to this song. While in NeO the violin is more to the folk side of things, in Ankimo (as they abbreviate themselves) it's more towards the classical side and is the main driver of the melody.
