      Ya drew knows. You know the cool thing about them is if you listen to this album and then their next 5 or 6 albums and finally get back to the album before colors called Alaska you are in for an understandable grindy metal funfest. Then you take a moment and proclaim "I F'ing get it now!"

    Hitting a random song off of Colors for the first time is hard as hell, this needs to be done as a whole. In its place in the album, this is the culmination of a huge buildup, which continues building to hit the climax a few songs later.

It took me a while to get used to, and being a drummer, the sheer ability and composition is just mind-numbing. Thank you for giving it a whirl. it's a fan favorite for most. I definitely understand the confusion and sometimes frustration listening to this song and band sometimes. As you've probably heard, this is right smack dab in the midst of the chaos of this album which is why I get annoyed when reactors are *always* being told to react to this song. Selkies: an endless obsession is a great single, so is astral body, fix the error, extremophile elite (live version in studio is insane). Btbam is like tool in the sense that you won't get the grand scale of everything without hearing the album in it's entirely. It's also not a band for everyone. It's hard for someone who does not play and instrument or understand music theory to get into btbam but it happens for sure, you just need to find the right tune/album to get you there.

    Maybe this will help. Listen to the first minute of Foam Born (A) the Backtrack and the last minute of White Walls. These are the opening and closing tracks of Colors. You'll notice they have some similarities cause the album is essentially one song.
    This song, Ants of the Sky, is pretty much the dead middle of that one album song. I felt the same way when I first heard this band but when you hear the whole album together it just slams so well.

    BTBAM is the type of group that you have to know what you're getting into and approach it differently from a listening perspective. I always think of it more akin to watching multiple seasons of a show that has recurring themes...as where most music is a single episode from a show. BTBAM is also something you need to listen to front to back and at least 5+ times to start getting an idea of what they are doing and how absolutely fucking incredible it is.

  • @anoptforout
    @anoptforout 2 года назад +8

    This is not how the album starts, and not all their music is as all over the place as this song. This is a climax moment in a chaotic movement towards the end of the album before things come back together in a more coherent heavy finale. I'm not going to lie...throwing a banjo saloon bit right after an Opeth Damnation solo will always be a mistake to me. They have more coherent songs that are equally complex and diverse with parts. I think one of their most accessible tracks is off their new album and has a great video: "The Future is Behind Us". It's also playful and silly at times...but always working towards a goal. It also shows their unreal ability to conjure moods that don't exist in any other space, music, or aspect of life.

    When you listen to this album and then you get to White Walls you will understand it all...especially when you get the fact that Rogers is doing vocals and playing keys and wrote all these songs in his sleep; or at least that they all sit down and write staff music for these songs and then get the instruments out. Their drummer, Blake Richardson, recorded this entire 60+ minute album in one take. The album is basically one singular song split into several tracks by title only.
    Please do more of them! They also have an entire cover album including Queen's Bicycle ;)

      He played it in one take on Twitch. He didn't record the actual album in one take.

    Yeah you guys got dropped into the middle of a legendary cluster fuck. Ants is an amazing track but you have to listen to Colors front to back to understand. It’s an audio experience.

    This song live was 14 of the best minutes I have ever experienced in live music. It is a little odd out of context of the album so I’ll add another “try the whole album” comment as well. I discovered these guys in early high school, around 2010, and it took me about 7 years to really get into it and now they’re one of my favorites.
    Selkies is one of their top hits, maybe the top hit, and another more recent song that I think is pretty accessible (relative to Ants) early on in the BTBAM journey is Voice of Trespass. I’d strongly suggest one of those two next.

    This is prog metal at its best. Sure it isn’t easy to listen to for the first time, but it’s worth taking time to digest over multiple listens. This is an amazing album, and even more impressive to see them play it (perfectly) live.

    Also this band does play in 4/4 & 5/4. It’s the root of all their timing.

    Someone once said to me that BTBAM write songs like they are all part of the same ADHD hive mind and I think this song above all others makes me think they might know what they were talking about after all
