  • A speaker shootout with the stock speaker Fender Design Lightning bolt by Eminence in comparison with the Eminence Cannabis Rex and a Jensen C12N.
I recently bought the Jensen speaker initially for my Tweed deluxe amp, but thought it could be interesting also to hear it with the Blues junior. I found that I still have the stock Lightning Bolt speaker and brought that to the mix as a reference.
I am also presenting my Blues jr. III amp that has been converted to fit in a head cabinet and a little about the modifications done to it (The Fromel mod).
    Which speaker do you prefer?

If the stock speaker was the first in the series, I think it sounded the best in all cases. Actually wasn't as impressed with the CR compared to all the reviews I'd heard about it. It sounded relatively thin and less lively to me than either of the other two.
Edit: After listening on my home stereo, the Cannabis Rex actually sounded much better. It definitely wins for smoothness. Good comparison, thanks.

I have the Blues Jr. III in tweed, with the C12N. Only thing I’ve done is to take the back cover off the amp and clip a leg of capacitor C3 (under the Volume control, on the board). Takes all of 5 minutes, and it makes a HUGE difference. Completely different amp! Zero ice pick and less top end fizz. I bought the amp for backline at a jam I host. I swore that I would NEVER own or play a Blues Jr. But I found it used, for a good price. And it was going to be backline, so not really a big deal for me. But I got it home, clipped C3 and I have used this amp for 6 of my last 7 gigs! I love it!

Another speaker, they commonly swap, out, and mod., the blues jr., with, is the Celestion Green Back. It's a really smooth sounding speaker! 🔊 👌 😎
Thanks for the demo! Keep rocki'n!!!

I have a Cannabis Rex in a separate cab which I use when looking for specific sounds; it is a very different animal.Until I came across that model, I didn't really appreciate how much the speaker mattered; got another cab ,loaded with a Swamp Thang, for when I want to go in the entirely opposite direction.Nothing can flub those out, and they're outstanding with baritone and bass.
I performed the Frommel mod on my original USA made Blues Jr.,- not difficult, and def worth while.

Your cannabis rex demo on your original channel was what convinced me to buy a cannabis rex for my old blues junior III. I loved it on your demo, but in person it just stole too much of the fender sparkle for my liking. I ended up going back to stock. Since then I've switched out my blues junior to a tweed model with the Jenson. I like it, but do find as you noticed you have to watch for the spiky frequencies. My treble usually never makes it above 4 or so. Anyway, your Rex sounds good again on this demo, but i'm not going to fall for it twice ;-)!
    Thanks for the great demos!

Hi thanks for a very nice and interesting comment. I also have a second C. Rex speaker, and it has crossed my mind that it is a bit different than the one I'm using here and in that other demo. I always thought that it had to do with me having them placed in different kind of cabinets. I might try and A/B them in the same cabinet to see if that is the case. BTW I dropped by your channel and subscribed. Is that your band (The Choir)? Sounds like a really cool band.

Warehouse ET 65 , all the way.
The Cannabis sounds very vintage and dirty to my ears, not at all Blackface. Not a good match for a traditional Fender EQ.

Very interesting. Yes, the Jensen sounded excellent as did the Eminence. Different dynamics but both good. I have those as well. The Cannabis is darker than the Jensen. Both great. You should try both the Jensen P12Q and the Jensen P12R.

Thanks so much for doing this. I’m considering a new speaker for my Blues Jr III also. I believe what’s missing in your video is the way that stock speaker sounds so stiff and boxy unless you can crank the amp to concert levels. C Rex seems to really fill out low end. I’m assuming that would make it sound “bigger” in the room? I might just go ahead and order one.

Lightning Bolt sounds to be right between the Jensen and the CRex, a little brighter than the Rex, but not as bright as the Jensen

Great Demo. Try a lower wattage speaker. I tried multiple 50 plus watt speakers in my bjr. Finally I put in one of the 30watt oxfords out of my 67 Pro Reverb. The low end was flabby with the original oxfords on the pro reverb.
But when I put one of them in in the bjr it was a match made in heaven.

Speaker cabs with different speakers here…. Different sounds for different days …just plug in a different cab to sub out what’s inside there…plus the boxiness of all small amps removed. I use cheap empty cabs that allow the speaker to be exposed well. I got several empty cabs for 10 -15 bucks each . I slowly built up a speaker collection . It’s easy to mod an old empty amp to become a cab also … best of luck snd stop trying to decide on what speaker. Btw I use small amps also 5w and medium cabs so that’s even more variety if needed. One of my fav is a peavy classiic 30 with a Weber speaker 4ext cab …nice.remember to match impedance or certainly not go downward

Hi Thor, I also have a Cannabis Rex in my Blues Junior Tweed. There were two main reasons for swapping the stock Jensen speaker: the first one was that the low frequencies were muddy with hum buckers. The second was again that the low frequencies sounded extremely flabby when overdrive pedals were engaged. In my ears (at least) the Rex sounds much better, with tighter bass responses. Would have been nice to hear a test with a Weber, but that’s perhaps too much of asking 😊

Ciao mio caro amico 😃 Yes, I think I've reached the conclusion that the Jensen will be for my tweed amp and the Cannabis Rex for my Blues jr. A Weber would be nice to test indeed. Haven't got one for the time being, but who knows what the future brings 😉

Thanks for a very good demo. The Cannabis Rex sounded best to me for your 335. I liked the rounder tones of the C12n on your Tele. Playing mostly humbucker guitars and looking for edgy "edge of breakup" blues rock tones these days, I'd go with the CR.

A mi blues jr le puse una G12 M Greenback y suena de lujo aunque extraño el sonido "americano". Tal vez lo mejor es tener dos gabinetes para tener las dos posibilidades de sonido con una cannabis rex y una greenback.

The fender-branded "special design" is in fact made by eminence...they're not a bad speaker in certain cabinets, but they do make the bj sound boxy...I replaced it with an eminence red white & blues in my bj3 and it opened up the top end in a pleasing way which helped mitigate some of the boxiness which the mid-heavy "special design" doesn't do any favors

@@GUITARSGIZMOS it was the in the 1st few minutes of the video, But u have to remember I was listening on my phone through my headphones. I can venture to say that it probably sounded great while you were in the room recording. There are so many variables it's too numerous to count. I also noticed that you were finger picking. In my experience the guitar has to be turned up quite a bit to get quality sounding notes when picked with bare fingers. That could be overloading your recording mics or driving my playback mics too hard. Idk.

Crex is overrated, it's muddy and adds fuzziness on cleans even when you don't want it. A Red White and Blues has the tonal benefits of the Crex but better, and has good clean headroom.
