Had an XC40 B3 since November and went for the Ultimate spec. No, there isn't a sport mode. You're in a Volvo, why do you want a sport mode? The ride is superb, the storage is brilliant and would recommend one to anyone. Fuel economy is OK, not stellar, but I can get around 400-500 miles per tank. Heated seats in the rear come as standard with Ultimate, as does a heated windscreen. The heated steering wheel is VERY HOT, so much so that any more than a 2/3 setting starts to burn your hands. Now the negatives: Sometimes the Console software is a bit buggy and requires a restart (Simple to do, but really annoying). The rear camera is a pain (Mercedes and Audi do it brilliantly). The Speed limiter only works with the road sign reader, and often gets it wrong (20 When lights flash is a favourite); but the adaptive cruise on motorways is a dream, especially when combined with lane assist. After years of Audis. Mercs and BMW's, the Volvo stands up well against them all.
Thank you so much for watching and sharing! Ah good glad it wasn’t me with finding the sport mode. 😅 Having said though it’ll pick up steam when you want it to, but glides through the gears. Yeah I noticed how hot the heated steering wheel got too! Did I see two heating settings?
@@arjunprasad4448 No, my 2024 model doesn't, which is probably a good thing - the speed sign reading can be a bit hit and miss as it gets confused easily. For example, there's a section of the motorway near me, which is 70mph, but a slip road that run parallel to it for a while is 50. Guess which one it chooses?!
I recently took delivery of a basic spec “core” XC40 in Vapour Grey (which my wife aptly calls “Farrow and Ball Grey”). Basic spec because it was “take it or leave it” deal from a lease company - very, very cheap (less than a Golf) if you don’t mind a 5k miles limit and no choices or options. Which I don’t as it’s a second car and we opted for Volvo because we have an XC60 (21 plate). Very pleased with it - frankly other than a rather dark interior (grey/black fabric seats, lots of black plastic, no sunroof for light) it’s just fine - the infotainment, particularly Google maps, is actually better than the top spec XC60, which doesn’t have android but Volvo’s own previous system - not as good. No 360 camera but excellent rear camera and emergency brake function (for those low bollards everyone has hit at least once). It has the B3 engine which is brisk and smooth and actually seems quieter than the B5 in the XC60 - maybe because the B5 has electric turbos? Ride is good, I expected it to be a bit more fidgety than the XC 60 due shorter wheelbase and no air suspension but it’s only noticeable on bad roads (of which we now have too many).
We test drove an XC40 two weeks ago. We fell in love with the car, but we were unsure about the long term costs of owning/repairing the vehicle. So, we ended up at Lexus and went that route. We still have a lot of love for the XC40 though. Fabulous little SUV!
@@cchan824 We got the NX and it was comparable in price to the XC40. Volvo repair prices in the US are high and that’s what held us back from going for it. We still really like the XC40 but we don’t regret going with the Lexus.
My son lives in Houston and when we go shopping almost everybody starts their cars on their phones when in the queue for paying to get the air con running before they go outside to the car park, because it’s so hot. It’s common practice.
Hi Nick - have owned owned since March, having had two M-B GLC's in succession, last one a 300D PP Executive with Airmatic air suspension - would say that Volvo is equally as comfortable on normal roads. Re driving mode, you're quite right that the car encourages smooth, 'go with the flow' driving and is more relaxing for that, particularly on long drives. BTW., you can change gears manually if you wish. One feature you didn't mention is 'Google Assistant.' Had some concerns about touchscreen functions etc., this system not only lets you choose car features - a/c., radio or media, heat up/down etc., make calls/hear messages etc., but you can also ask questions, and say 'navigate to M&S' and it will - stress free and pretty accurate. Also updates over the air. So... very safe and well built, high specs for the price, smooth, quiet and £23000 less than the full spec GLC I was considering. That''s why I bought one.
Ah awesome thanks for watching and sharing your experience! I note your last point, this is one of my main reasons for covering other cars. I planned to do this a very long time ago as the price of cars rising could price people out of their next Mercedes model. So I hope to include Volvo and many more going forward (maybe for when you change your next! 😜) Ah yes Google Assistant, forgot that one! ☺️ I plan to cover more Volvo’s soon! And of course for any Mercedes lovers, I’ve got videos planned there too!
Very good review and very fair. I could add that the direction is without feedback and you feel the weight when you stop. But the car is very confortable and materials inside are very qualitative. Very good car.
I've had an XC40 B3 since mid-May and so far, it has met my expectations. As with all the cars there are pros and cons but seeing what you can get for 43.000 euros these days the Volvo offers quite a lot (I have the Plus version with some extras). Regarding what you're saying @13:05 I think that it has to do with Adaptive Pedal Response. It's a setting that you can turn on/off and basically has to do with the speed limits. Instead of warning you with a sound, it doesn't allow you to go beyond the speed limit, unless you press more on the gas pedal.
@@RaP22 No you can't. At first I thought it would be a problem, but now after 3 months using the car it doesn't bother me at all. You have all the information you need and the layout is very well thought out. The only think that they should add is an info about the song/radio channel being played. Also I would add that neither the fact that it doesn't have physical aircon controls bothers you (in practice). I put the aircon on auto mode and in 3 months I may have changed the temperature 5 times. Some of which via google assistant...
Test drove one last week. It is absurd that you can not turn the center screen off. Despite some manuals saying to hold the center "home" button, it does not turn the screen off, rather it puts it in cleaning mode (can clean it without the buttons being activated), or it reboots the screen. I just don't want bright screen illuminated all the time.
There might be like a dark mode or something that you could toggle to which might reduce the brightness. Plus I’d be very surprised if it didn’t have an ambient light sensor. Did you try it at night or dusk?
Try this. Press Settings in the top view. Press My Car → Individual Drive Mode and select Individual Drive Mode. In Presets, select a drive mode to start from: Eco, Comfort, Dynamic or Polestar Engineered*.
I had several Volvo's. Since a few months it's a Fjord blue B4 ultimate. Globally a nice car, but there are some practical choices that Volvo made which I really do not understand. The trash bin is a useless marketing gag. Everybody mentions it, but nobody adds that the armrest is consequently way too short. The display intensity was previously set by a practical small rotary knob, it could be used blindly. Now you have to look at the screen, select settings, select display, scroll down for intensity, and slide or rather fiddle to get it as intended. Doing this when entering a tunnel is close to suicide. The XC40 had the knob till last year's model change, the location in the plastic cover is still there, but the button is gone. Google maps is fine, but when it is on the screen, nothing is shown nowhere what radio station or media is playing. If you want to know or change, please touch, touch touch... You want to know the time? You can find it in small letters at the top of the central display. Previously it was shown much larger and also in front of you on the driver display. Not anymore altough there is plenty of room for it as before. One can argue that leaving out a knob is saving money, but no longer showing usefull information.... I do not understand. These 'details' rarely are mentionned in reviews, I also discovered it only afer some days of use of the new car. But I hope that Volvo will return to it's Swedish practical sense and will upgrade Over The Air.....and maybe also offer a display intensity button as a kit.
Ah that makes sense! Well first of all, thank you so much for sharing! This was the first Volvo I’d ever reviewed or even driven so was not aware of the rotary wheel before this one. But the more I do this the more I can compare and relate to previous models. For the bin, I’d never seen it before so thought I’d mention it ☺️ And thank you for watching! They do perform over the air updates from time to time so we’ll have to see!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it! Yes torque figures are B3 = 265 Nm B4 = 300 Nm For ambient lighting sadly didn’t see it on the one I had although I have read about it
Sadly didn’t get to test the adaptive cruise out fully in the time I had it, as this was my first Volvo on test for review on my channel just wanted to get the basics covered. I would hope that it does seeing it has an Android based system inside 🤓
The genius idea for the fold up divider and hooks no doubt came from a woman. We guys don't think like that. For us, it's HP torque 0-60 - and bed liners to catch the broken eggs.
Sadly I don’t sell them myself so don’t go that far into the buying process. Dealers will be able to give you the most up to date info. I just review the car 😜 They might be that now, but later in the year, could be shorter or it could be longer, or could be the same. Plus they may even sell demos etc for a quicker delivery 🙏

What about the cabin noise on the motorway? In comparison to competitions of the same price or even lower price? Guess more important as the cabin trash holder (which is addressed in each XC40 review for some reason).

Hi Nick I received an XC40 Mild Hybrid couple days ago. My Spotify account is not playing properly, cant play a full album or playlist. I can ask google to play a song from an artist however sometimes it plays a completely different song and then it doesn’t skip to the next song when prompted. Some issues with asking google to play radio 2 for example there is no sound except for a distorted rasping noise. I have to sometimes manually play the radio stations in DAB format. Are you aware if these are common issue? Thanks
Sadly only had the car for a week and this was some time ago, it’s gone back since then. If you’ve still got trouble reach out to Volvo and I’m sure they can help!
Not seen a plug-in hybrid for an XC40. Thought they were all just mild hybrids. A plug-in hybrid though can be charged as little or as often as you like. If you have a plug-in hybrid you’ll want to charge it as often as you can but without adding inconvenience. So for example a trip to Scotland and back, you’re probably not wanting to stop every few miles as that’s just not practical. But plug in everyday car home, and run on electric? That’s good. Plug in every few days or every week? Also good to. The reason to plug in when you can as it’s possible to be far cheaper than fuel when running in electric. ⚡️
@@npoleary thanks. The xc40 is plug in hybrid. Does the car exhaust the battery then go to fuel? Or do they work in tandem? I don’t think they are for me doing some reading
Unless I’m reading it wrong, the Volvo XC40 is only available in mild hybrid in the UK. This was like this when I filmed the video and still is now according to the their website (for the UK anyway) Plug-in hybrids in most cases will use up the battery first then switch over although some out there have some intelligent stuff where it can operate over the course of a journey set by the Sat nav. But in most cases battery first (unless you change the drive mode)
It is the car with a high level of waftability compared to its same class rivals. I know because I have one ( a B4) and have driven the Volkswagen and BMW. I would say the Beamer has a bit more focus on being a drivers car and somewhat less of being a traveler’s car where the Volvo is the other way around, somewhat less of a drivers car but more a traveler’s car. And the Volvo has more horsepower and torque than the Beamer which is relevant if you pull a 7 meter 1700kg caravan every spring summer and autumn.
Waftability 😅 True it’s very smooth and almost has a floaty feel. It doesn’t encourage you to drive fast at all. Hopefully I can test out its rivals more in the future! 🤓
Where's the cruise control? Do you know what the lowest operational speed for it is? It just sort of makes sense that for an "A to B" cruiser. (The "sport" mode is in the driver's mind, sport.)
@@npoleary --- Thanks. Toyota actually changed something (!) when they moved their CC from a stick to the wheel. Some school zones are 15mph limits. I think BMW of all makes (I think), has their CC active at 5mph, on one model at least. I saw that in one review and I've totally forgotten which. Mercedes' is 15mph at least in some models. Surprising that Volvo would set their low limit higher, at 20mph. I'm big on CC to free up attention while driving.
Thank you! Thanks for watching! Well just covering other brands to give people a choice! More hopefully coming soon! And for the Mercedes fans too, I aim to create a library of content for all!
Volvo’s XC-40 was very nice and practical, very smooth ride that doesn’t encourage fast driving. Similar cars there’s Mercedes GLC which is full of tech and then there’s the Volkswagen Tiguan which is also very nice and probably going to the their best seller still. They also announced a new model called the Tayron coming soon which is very similar.
Yeah, it is hard to notice when you sit there only for a moment. But it is very apparent comparing directly with XC60 for example. Second issue was fixed head restraints in the back, which makes it virtually impossible to mount child seats for older kids.
Does 360 camera allow side views out when pulling out of a junction with poor visibility splays? Does it have different temp setting for heated steering wheel? Thanks
360° cameras are usually on the sides on the mirrors so it wouldn’t be suitable for checking to see if cars are coming on a road like a junction. And yes there is. The heated steering wheel is the hottest I’ve ever reviewed on a car but there were are at least 2 to 3 settings for adjustment which is good.
I bought a B5 Ultimate 6 months ago. I thing that the engine control system is a work in progress. We have had 3 updates to the software in less than 6 months.
This was like this when I filmed the video and still is now according to the their website (for the UK anyway)
Plug-in hybrids in most cases will use up the battery first then switch over although some out there have some intelligent stuff where it can operate over the course of a journey set by the Sat nav.
Waftability 😅
True it’s very smooth and almost has a floaty feel. It doesn’t encourage you to drive fast at all.
Hopefully I can test out its rivals more in the future! 🤓
I have a paid Polestar mode.
You didn't tell if the back seat can be reclined or not
I don’t remember that you could? Unless I missed it when filming the rear seats
Where's the cruise control? Do you know what the lowest operational speed for it is? It just sort of makes sense that for an "A to B" cruiser. (The "sport" mode is in the driver's mind, sport.)
All on the steering wheel
I’m sure it was 20mph and above 😎
@@npoleary --- Thanks. Toyota actually changed something (!) when they moved their CC from a stick to the wheel. Some school zones are 15mph limits. I think BMW of all makes (I think), has their CC active at 5mph, on one model at least. I saw that in one review and I've totally forgotten which. Mercedes' is 15mph at least in some models. Surprising that Volvo would set their low limit higher, at 20mph. I'm big on CC to free up attention while driving.
what exact model is this please
It was a Volvo XC40 Ultra in Vapour Grey

Bought the BMW X1 327 hp vamosss
Nice! How are you finding it?
Gloss black has been the biggest mistake car makers have used there is not one car that hasn’t scratched!!!! Due to gloss black
Yeah not a huge fan of gloss black personally but it wouldn’t put me off buying the entire car
You can always wrap it like mine or some others people actually ppf theirs to make it even more glossy!
@silluete true!
@13:00 is that a random cow hitchhiking?!
Maybe! 🤔
Hello Nick but nothing is like the Mercedes Benz 👑
I'm bored of the Benz, so going to try this for a bit.
Thank you! Thanks for watching!
Well just covering other brands to give people a choice!
More hopefully coming soon! And for the Mercedes fans too, I aim to create a library of content for all!
I have a 24 GLE 4matic, prefer my xc40.
I've gone from a Merc to this. Best choice I've made.
Looked at buying one of these but basics like reverse camera you have to pay extra for where on Merc pretty much standard
Are you based in the UK? Camera is standard on both
@@npoleary yep UK. Was not standard when we enquired in February this year. Ended up buying a 24 Mercedes
Good job I’ve got loads of tips and tricks on my channel for you then! 😜
@@npoleary watched most of them already 😜
This is not true, the reverse camera is standard in all new XC40's
Of all the SUVS you've spent time in, what one stood out the most in your opinion?
Volvo’s XC-40 was very nice and practical, very smooth ride that doesn’t encourage fast driving.
Similar cars there’s Mercedes GLC which is full of tech and then there’s the Volkswagen Tiguan which is also very nice and probably going to the their best seller still. They also announced a new model called the Tayron coming soon which is very similar.
Me gusta volvo para mi hijo. Jose David
You didn't mentioned upright seating position in the rear. It was a dealbreaker for me.
I didn’t notice that it was too upright, I’ve been in some that are very upright before! Mainly coupes and convertibles though
Yeah, it is hard to notice when you sit there only for a moment. But it is very apparent comparing directly with XC60 for example. Second issue was fixed head restraints in the back, which makes it virtually impossible to mount child seats for older kids.
@adamerdgas5188 ah hopefully might be able to check out the larger models in the future 🙏 I’m defo pay attention to that!
You can’t even change the dashboard settings now.. stuck with the same old dash screen
70 reg XC40 does have the Mode Eco/Comf/Performance. Why on earth has it been removed ?
Not sure…couldn’t see it anywhere
I asked Volvo when the car went back and it’s not present on the new ones.
@@npoleary On ours in the US it is a button under the screen. Comfort, Individual, Performance, Eco, and Off road if it is an AWD model.
Hmmm interesting…thanks for sharing!
but its not 5 seats :(
Sport mode. It’s called dynamic. But why would you want one in a waftable car?
Our US version AWD does 5.1 0-60mph, It is no slouch.
What’s the name of the colour of the car please? 🙏
Vapour Grey
14:20 was this review done in Bangladesh? 😂
Haha no 😅
I didn't know Eminem does car reviews to kill time!
😂I couldn’t rap to save my life 😅
@@npoleary nevertheless the resemblance is astounding! Well at least to me. Good luck with your YT journey. 🍻
@iliyas868 haha thanks!
I bought a B5 Ultimate 6 months ago. I thing that the engine control system is a work in progress. We have had 3 updates to the software in less than 6 months. The car is a big disappointment as I have owned several Volvos in the last 20 years. This one does not stack up to the other ones. A big disappointment for $ 51,000.
Oh strange, it’s not common for new cars to have such issues. Have you been in contact with the dealership?
I have been to the dealer twice. Both times they have kept the car for several days. @@npoleary
@@npoleary I have had it at the dealer twice in the last 6 months. Both times they kept it for several days. Really no solution that I have seen.
Hay Google?
Yeah you can do!
So yeah, two hands on the wheel?
Sometimes! 😎
My Mercedes E300 does more ,and my new 2023 chrysler 300 limited edition
I don’t think anyone asked
Volvos are so boring now they all look the same inside and out, thats why they aren’t as popular as they where a few years ago
What’s your go to favourite brand of car? 😎
Have you ever owned a Volvo of any description? Until you have your comment is invalid!
Pretty cool, and pretty idiotic. All systems that can be activated from remote and also be hacked.
I had it linked to my account for the week with two step verification enabled 👍🏼
You don’t think that’s secure enough?
colour for Mr. and mrs. dull car for a really dull person s.....I quite like it ,except its an ovlov and its as boring as watching a football game ...still might have to buy one ...not!
